Obviously, the people in Kabul, Somalia and Iran must have adopted the confederate flag. ;)

Re: It Didn’t Always Suck To Be a Woman in Afghanistan
That's crazy, Ajax.
It reminds me of the FLDS. I saw a picture of a lady I know who grew up there. She was a child. Short sleeves. Dress just above the knee. Now, pioneer dress is required.
Sometimes I wonder if we (LDS Church) aren't heading the same direction. For example, when I was a child, knees and shoulders weren't porn. By the time I was a teenager, though, dresses were supposed to be to the knees - but it wasn't as bad as it is today.

I have noticed the same. In the late 1970s and early 1980s there was not such an obsession with absurd dictates on "modesty." I will note however that there is a push-back. My daughters were at a youth conference a while back in which beach activities were going to take place and so girls were encouraged to bring swimming suits. My wife frantically tried to find one-piece suits for my daughters and finally, after a long search, found some that they were okay with. Then, upon talking with the organizers when picking them up, and my oldest griping that many of the participants wore bikinis, they admitted that the Church was losing the war with bikinis so why bother anymore. The Church is also losing the war with tattoos and piercings so I am hopeful that we will return to a more 1950s - 1980s approach to "modesty" and concentrate on more important aspects of righteousness.A Random Phrase wrote:That's crazy, Ajax.

Re: It Didn’t Always Suck To Be a Woman in Afghanistan
Do you mean you think the dresses LDS women wear are getting longer, as in, below the knee? If so, I wonder if it's a geographical, away-from-Mormon-corridor thing, because in our ward, the vast majority of not only YW, but RS women wear dresses/skirts that are well ABOVE the knee - by quite a few inches - so much so, that when they sit down and/or cross their legs, you can literally see several inches of their garments (among other things...). Many also wear dresses/tops that unashamedly show a good amount of cleavage, too, lol. Oh, and form-fitting - super tight dresses/tops/skirts are all the rage (around here anyway). A couple months ago, several of the older YW wore dresses to church that they'd worn to prom the night before, and there were all kinds of not only bare shoulders, but bare backs, all the way down to the point I was surprised (on one especially) that her butt crack wasn't showing (not even kidding). These other examples run the gamut from 12 year olds just entering YW, to middle age women serving in the RS presidency. So I wonder if there are different "norms" for different areas of the country or something?A Random Phrase wrote:Sometimes I wonder if we (LDS Church) aren't heading the same direction. ajax - as a pubic public service, you might have to resurrect a masturbation thread if you keep posting lurid pictures like the Homecoming Queen 1964.

Re: It Didn’t Always Suck To Be a Woman in Afghanistan
I mean the hype and the attempt at indoctrination (especially for youth booklet, as an example). And dress codes like for BYU and sister missionaries. In real life, meaning in real wards, I don't see much of that - but, over time, it could become mainstream.Tabula Rasa wrote:Do you mean you think the dresses LDS women wear are getting longer, as in, below the knee?
As to the rest of your post. Yes, some people (especially Americans) have a nasty propensity to think for themselves at some point, unless totally immersed in some sort of brainwashing while growing up (however intentional or unintentional - thinking FLDS and, to a much lesser degree, LDS).
