Cleansing to begin in my house - possibly different meaning

Post by Original_Intent »

Good day everyone.

Last night I was pondering various troubles in the world, and I was thinking in particularly how I am concerned that many Christians, including LDS, blindly support Israel. I think many are not aware that there are those who "...claim to be Jews, but are not, but are of the synagogue of Satan". I wondered that many who feel that they are supporting God's chosen people, if they are not careful, may actually be supporting the opposition.

It then occurred to me, I will not claim it as inspiration, but I BELIEVE that it was, that perhaps there is another meaning to these verses from D&C 112;
24 Behold, vengeance cometh speedily upon the inhabitants of the earth, a day of wrath, a day of burning, a day of desolation, of weeping, of mourning, and of lamentation; and as a whirlwind it shall come upon all the face of the earth, saith the Lord.

25 And upon my house shall it begin, and from my house shall it go forth, saith the Lord;

26 First among those among you, saith the Lord, who have professed to know my name and have not known me, and have blasphemed against me in the midst of my house, saith the Lord.

27 Therefore, see to it that ye trouble not yourselves concerning the affairs of my church in this place, saith the Lord.

28 But purify your hearts before me; and then go ye into all the world, and preach my gospel unto every creature who has not received it;
I do believe that this is primarily referring to LDS who have claimed testimony that they did not really have. But I also wonder if a similar thing might occur in Israel, that those who claim to be Jews but are not (quite analogous to their LDS counterparts) if those will also be cleansed from among the Jews at the same time. Because I do believe that much of the evil that is in the world is due to these false Jews, and that many are led astray because they willingly and blindly follow because they think they are supporting God's chosen people.

How many are even aware of the warnings in Revelation regarding these false Jews? It seems that if they were they would be careful to be sure who they were throwing their support behind.

As the scriptures warn us that there are false Jews mingled among the Jews, I merely reiterate the warning that you are very aware of who you are supporting as it is a matter of salvation.

I would also comment that propaganda that is recognized as propaganda is not very successful propaganda.

It was 44 years ago that I lived and worked in Israel, although I did go back twice for short visits, and have taken a limited interest in what is going on in Israel, mostly thru the reports of Barry Chamish. About the only contribution I can make to this thread is my opinion that the gospel of Jesus Christ is not alive and well among the Jews in Israel. Based on the principles of the gospel, there are lots of jack Jews just are there are lots of jack Mormons. 44 years ago I thought of Israel as an outpost for the United States in the Mid-East; eyes and ears, if you like. It seemed to me that the Soviet Union was intent on fighting Israel right down to the last Arab, as W. Cleon Skousen expressed it. I thought that supporting Israel was supporting American interests in that part of the world. Now, events out there cause me to believe Israel is coming under increasing pressure to accept a global government just as America is.

Original Intent that is a most unusual idea. In the temple we are washed and anointed in the House of Israel. I have never put the two together. We know through our pat. blessings that we are of such and such tribe and adobted into a tribe. So, an interesting concept to have "upon my house" could very well mean the House of Israel from which it spreads to the rest of the world. Kinda like what's happening now!

What has been other interpretations?? "Upon [salt lake city] shall it begin"? Upon [the United States]? Upon [the LDS Church]? Upon [a temple]? Also, what supporting statements can we find on this passage?

I took those questions and did some research... Sure, there could be some parallels between the Church and Israel, as they could both experience spiritually similarities prior to the Second Coming. So, I don't necessarily disagree with the OP. All I can say was, as much as I was hoping to find more clues about Israel, mostly found quotes referring "my house" to the Righteous, the Saints, Utah and that the "beginning of it" happening before, now, and later.

My meager research (sorry if it's a long read).

Orson Pratt shares an interpretation that it being more based on spiritual worthiness:
...And upon my house shall it begin, and from my house shall it go forth, saith the Lord; First among those among you, saith the Lord, who have professed to know my name and have not known me, and have blasphemed against me in the midst of my house, saith the Lord (D&C 112:23-26).
... We D&C 84:114 are told in the revelation I have just read, that vengeance cometh speedily upon the inhabitants of the earth; that it is a day of wrath, burning, desolation, weeping, mourning and lamentation, and that as a whirlwind these things shall come upon the inhabitants of all the earth.
Where shall these great and severe judgments begin? Upon what people does the Lord intend to commence this great work of vengeance? Upon the people who profess to know his name and still blaspheme it in the midst of his house (D&C 112:25-26, 1 Pet. 4:17). They are the ones designated for some of the most terrible judgments of the latter days. This should be a warning to the Latter-day Saints ... Upon my house, saith the Lord, shall it begin, first upon those among you who have professed my name and have not known me (Matt. 7:33) and have blasphemed against me in the midst of my house.
... Let parents awake (D&C 112:24-25) and see to it lest the same destruction that will overtake their children because of their apostasy come upon them also.

Discourse by Elder Orson Pratt, delivered in the 13th Ward Assembly Rooms, Salt Lake City, Sunday Afternoon, January 26, 1873.
Reported By: David W. Evans. Journal of Discourses. Vol. 15. Page 330.
Daniel H. Wells shares similar feelings:
We see the judgments of the Almighty spreading through the land, and what assurance have we that we shall not be afflicted unless we live so as to be without condemnation? Do we think that we shall be shielded from the judgments of the Almighty if we lay ourselves liable by the same acts as the world? If we do we are mistaken, for if we are guilty of the same crimes and wickedness the results will be the same with us as with the world, with the exception perhaps that the judgments will overtake us a little quicker (Morm. 4:5), for they will commence with us (D&C 112:24-25). For it would thwart the purposes of the Almighty to let the wicked get a foothold and predominate in the midst of Israel, where he intends to prepare his people for the building up of Zion and the New Jerusalem.
Brethren and sisters let us be energetic in the discharge of our duties which now devolve upon us in our various locations. Let us be industrious and useful in our day and generation, and not lend our means or talents to build up interests opposed to the kingdom of God ... The times are pregnant with great events...

Remarks by President Daniel H. Wells, made in the Tabernacle, Great Salt Lake City, April 7, 1862. Reported By: J. V. Long. Journal of Discourses. Vol. 9. page 303.
Neal A. Maxwell offers good counsel:

...for the Lord has clearly indicated that His purifying and sifting judgment would begin first at the house of God and then proceed outward to the world. (See 1 Pet. 4:17; D&C 112:25.) Just what this sifting will consist of is not now clear, what special pressures—combined with the ongoing and demanding rigors of “taking up the cross daily”—we know not. (See Luke 9:23.) We do know that the tempter’s triad of tools, identified by Jesus as temptation, persecution, and tribulation, will be relentlessly used. (See Matt. 13:21; Luke 8:13.)

"Be of Good Cheer," Elder Neal A. Maxwell, Nov. 1982
But I think this is an interesting clue:
When we have stored away our grain we are safe, independent of the world, in case of famine, are we not? Yes, we are; for, in that case, we will have the means for subsistence in our own hands. When the famines begin upon the earth, we shall be very apt to feel them first.
If judgments must need begin at the house of God, (D&C 112:25) and if the righteous scarcely are saved, (1 Pet. 4:17-18) how will it be with the wicked? Am I looking for famines? Yes, the most terrible and severe that have ever come upon the nations of the earth. These things are right before us, and some of this people are not thinking anything about them; they do not enter their hearts.

Remarks by President Heber C. Kimball, Delivered in the Bowery, Great Salt Lake City, April 6, 1857. Reported By: G. D. Watt, J. V. Long. Journal of Discourses. Vol. 5. Page 20.
Moses Thatcher indicates Utah:
...and as an evidence that I feel it, I will say when this nation, having sown to the wind, reaps the whirlwind; (Hosea 8:7) when brother takes up sword against brother (Ezek. 38:21); when father contends against son, and son against father(Luke 12:53, Mark 13:12, Micah 7:6); when he who will not take up his sword against his neighbor must needs flee to Zion for safety (D&C 45:68)—then I would say to my friends come to Utah; for the judgments of God, commencing at the house of the Lord (D&C 112:24-25, 1 Pet. 4:17-18), will have passed away, and Utah, undisturbed, will be the most delightful place in all the Union. When war and desolation and bloodshed, and the ripping up of society come upon the nation, I have said to such, “Come to Utah and we will divide our morsel of food with you, we will divide our clothing with you, and we will offer you protection.” I will tell you, my brethren and sisters, the day will come, and it is not far distant, when he who will not take up his sword against his neighbor, will have to flee to Zion for safety (D&C 45:68); and it is presupposed in this prediction that Zion will have power to give them protection. We are not going to do it outside of the government, either; we are going to do it inside the government...

Discourse by Apostle Moses Thatcher, delivered in the Tabernacle, Logan, Cache County, Semi-Annual Conference, Thursday Afternoon, October 8, 1885. Reported By: John Irvine. Journal of Discourses. Vol. 26. Page 334.
But, another interesting clue is the following. Perhaps it has already begun:
(Then again this could have been only a type for something to come.)
...
And do you hear it, O Israel? And have you seen it, and felt the pangs of war, when they have sent their army to this Territory, intending to drive us from our homes? As they commenced it upon the House of God, it must go forth upon themselves (D&C 112:25); for as they measured out to us, it must be measured unto them (Matt. 7:2) fourfold (Luke 19:8).
The nations are already convulsed. Not only the United States, but many of the European nations are feeling the effect of the judgments of the Almighty; and they will continue to be afflicted more and more, until the above revelations are fulfilled. There is no evading the judgments of the Almighty; their only escape is in obedience to the Gospel we have to preach. But do they believe what we have said? No; they do not believe a word of it, and therefore there is but little hope in their case.
Brethren and sisters, let your hearts be open to receive the word of truth, that the Spirit of the Most High may be in you as a well of water, springing up into everlasting life (John 4:14). God bless you forever...

"Observance of the Commandments of God," Discourse by President Heber C. Kimball, made in the Tabernacle, Great Salt Lake City, January 6, 1861. Reported By: J. V. Long., Journal of Discourses, Vol. 9, page 132.
Brigham Young, along the same lines:

We have cried to the nation of the United States, and to other nations for over a third of a century, saying, the wages of sin is death (Rom. 6:23)... The nation that kills the prophets of God in any age must expect to reap cursings instead of blessings, unless it speedily repent. Judgment must begin at the house of God first (D&C 112:24-25), and we are perfectly willing it should. In 1857, they sent an army to Utah to annihilate “Mormonism,” but the scourge with which they intended to overwhelm this people has come upon their own heads, and the end is not yet. I told General Thomas L. Kane, that friend to humanity, when he visited us in 1857, that the coming of that army was the entering wedge to split the Government of the United States in pieces, and that soon. D&C 87:1-8 He, of course, could not see how this could ever be ... Everything they are doing at present in Congress is only calculated to widen the breach, and alienate and destroy every vestige of love and affection that may yet be existing; and this they will continue to do until they have severed the last tie and worked out the entire destruction of the Government. They think they are doing the best that can be done. Many of them are honorable men, and would do good to the nation if they knew how. The results of their acts will be dissolution, strife, war, and bloodshed, until they are wasted away. The Lord will waste away the wicked as He said He (D&C 43:33, Ps. 37:20) would. A curse will come upon them to the third and fourth generation [interesting!], saith the Lord Almighty, if they repent (D&C 124:50) not, and refrain not from their sins. There is no likelihood of their doing this.

Remarks by President Brigham Young, delivered in Tooele City, August 17, 1867. Reported By: G. D. Watt. Journal of Discourses. Vol. 12. Page 119.

If it's any consolation, my additional advice is "see to it that ye trouble not yourselves concerning the affairs of my church in this place, ... But purify your hearts." :) Be true. Keep the commandments. Be worthy. Prepare for the Second Coming in accordance with the amount of light the Lord grants unto you. Hold to the Rod. Look and Live.

When I first discovered these verses, I initially thought the Lord meant temple when referring to "my house." Since then, I have come to believe the Lord means the house of Israel, or in other words, the Lord's covenant people, including covenant gentiles.

When the scripture says those who prides to know my name, I think of what the savior said to Joseph Smith in the groove, those religions who prides to know Christ but deny the power... I think of the Christian world and America who professes to be Christian but reject the restored gospel... just my two cents
