Sunain wrote: December 1st, 2017, 9:27 am Statistics Canada: Less Than Half of All Canadians Aged 25-54 Now Have Full-Time, Year-Round Jobs
New census data from Statistics Canada suggests the quality of Canadian jobs continues to fall while precarious work continues to rise.

Most disturbingly, StatCan reports less than half of all Canadian workers (49.8%) between the ages of 25 and 54 worked full-time, full-year jobs in 2015.

According to StatCan, “the period from 2005 to 2015 saw an overall shift from full-time, full-year employment to part-time or part-year work,” something they attribute to “social and economic changes, such as the 2008-2009 financial crisis,” as well as “a shift from traditional to more flexible work schedules.”

This is making it harder and harder for young people to start a family here in Canada. Even if they do manage to get a full time job, pay is stagnant and housing is the most expensive in North America. The church is not very understanding to the financial conditions of the youth today unfortunately. Faith only goes so far when social and economic conditions become the reality for all, as it is here for over half the working population. No one wants the stigma of having to go on welfare to support a family. :(
I honestly believe that we can take steps to make possible forming a family without going into debt but I don't think the LDS or non-members are willing to make that change. They are happy with things the way they are.

Even a $1 million retirement nest egg isn't enough anymore

With more retirees responsible for their own financial security, even a $1 million nest egg isn't nearly enough. Considering the looming retirement savings shortfall, experts say there are only two ways out: Earn more or spend less.

It was one of hundreds of attacks in the British capital every year that have prompted government intervention and left the city's police force asking the public for help to tackle the crime wave.

Brian Head Fire led officials to uncover survivalist’s explosive-filled bunkers hidden near makeshift cabins - The Salt Lake Tribune

A wildfire that burned 71,000 acres in southern Utah this summer led firefighters and other officials to uncover several explosive-filled bunkers hidden near makeshift cabins illegally built by a survivalist on public land, police say.
A Thursday news release from the Iron County Sheriff’s Office detailed how firefighters discovered the first bunker June 27 — 10 days after the Brian Head Fire began.
While working to suppress the blaze, firefighters near Henderson Hill heard “popping sounds,” the release said. At first, they thought the popping was rocks exploding from the heat of the wildfire, but as the sounds continued for about five minutes, the crews realized it was ammunition exploding.

Secrets of Ancient Egyptian Writing Revealed in 2,000-Year-Old Papyrus Scrolls

The black inks that ancient Egyptians used for writing on papyrus texts were made, in part, of metal. A collaboration of international researchers revealed for the first time that despite having their origins vary across time and space, ancient Egyptian papyri contained ink that shared a literal common element: copper.

Researchers used texts from the Papyrus Carlsberg Collection, University of Copenhagen, which they divided into two groups. One comprised private papers of a soldier named Horus who was stationed at a military camp in southern Egypt. The camp, Pathyris, fell to civil war in 88 B.C. The texts recovered from the ruins date to the late 2nd and early 1st centuries B.C. The second group comes from the Tebtunis Temple Library, which remains the only known major ancient Egyptian library to survive to the present day. The researchers selected from several hundred papyrus manuscripts and fragments from the 1st to 3rd centuries A.D.

China’s Top Ideologue Calls for Tight Control of Internet - The New York Times

WUZHEN, China — Little heard from but hugely influential, the professor-turned-Communist theoretician who has been a major adviser to three Chinese leaders finally stepped out of the shadows on Sunday.

Known as the brain behind President Xi Jinping, Wang Huning made his first major speech since joining the Politburo Standing Committee, the seven-member group that rules China, at a conference created to show off the country’s technological strengths to the world.

Well known for his icy remove and support of authoritarianism, Mr. Wang called for security and order on the internet as part of five proposals he made to guide the future of cyberspace. He also emphasized China’s technological prowess, and said more should be done by the government to guide the development of new industries like artificial intelligence and quantum computing.

Internet Must Have Security, Humanity, Apple CEO Tells China - Bloomberg

Apple Inc. Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook made his first appearance at China’s World Internet Conference, using the surprise keynote to call for future internet and AI technologies to be infused with privacy, security and humanity.

Cook made the comments on Sunday at the opening ceremony for the conference -- an event designed to globally promote the country’s vision of a more censored and controlled internet. It’s the second Chinese appearance in two months for the executive, who met with President Xi Jinping in October.

“The theme of this conference -- developing a digital economy for openness and shared benefits -- is a vision we at Apple share,” Cook said. “We are proud to have worked alongside many of our partners in China to help build a community that will join a common future in cyberspace."

China’s A.I. Advances Help Its Tech Industry, and State Security - The New York Times

BEIJING — During President Trump’s visit to Beijing, he appeared on screen for a special address at a tech conference.

First he spoke in English. Then he switched to Mandarin Chinese.

Mr. Trump doesn’t speak Chinese. The video was a publicity stunt, designed to show off the voice capabilities of iFlyTek, a Chinese artificial intelligence company with both innovative technology and troubling ties to Chinese state security. IFlyTek has said its technology can monitor a car full of people or a crowded room, identify a targeted individual’s voice and record everything that person says.

Venezuela to create digital currency amid financing crisis

Caracas (AFP) - Venezuela is creating a digital currency to combat a financial blockade by the United States, President Nicolas Maduro announced Sunday.

The Petro will be backed by Venezuela's oil and gas reserves and its gold and diamond holdings, the president said in his weekly television program.

"This is going to allow us to move toward new forms of international financing for the country's economic and social development," the president said.

The government also announced the creation of a "blockchain observatory" -- a software platform for buying and selling virtual currency.

Trump rips FBI over treatment of Flynn, Clinton | TheHill

President Trump on Monday defended former national security adviser Michael Flynn, saying it's "very unfair" he was charged with a crime and Hillary Clinton was not.

“Well, I feel badly for Gen. Flynn," Trump told reporters. "I feel very badly. He’s led a very strong life.”

Trump claimed that Clinton, his Democratic opponent in the presidential election last year, lied to the FBI with impunity about her private email server.

"I will say this, Hillary Clinton lied many times to the FBI. Nothing happened to her,” he said. “Flynn lied and they destroyed his life. I think it’s a shame.”

FBI agent dismissed from Mueller probe changed Comey description of Clinton - CNNPolitics

Washington (CNN)A former top counterintelligence expert at the FBI, now at the center of a political uproar for exchanging private messages that appeared to mock President Donald Trump, changed a key phrase in former FBI Director James Comey's description of how former secretary of state Hillary Clinton handled classified information, according to US officials familiar with the matter. Electronic records show Peter Strzok, who led the investigation of Hillary Clinton's private email server as the No. 2 official in the counterintelligence division, changed Comey's earlier draft language describing Clinton's actions as "grossly negligent" to "extremely careless," the source said.
