You guys need to get into the 21st century.
I think we had better ideas and morals in 1787.

You Liberals/Progressives think that forward in time is forward in progress. Not necessarily so. We have been losing our freedom and and rights as Satan takes an even greater hold on our souls, usually by selling something for nothing.

Regards,

George Clay

PS; So you think that % GDP is the best measure of Health Care. I guess as a countryman of John Meynard Keynes, you would agree that the amount you spend is more important that what you get!... especially if you are convinced that it is someone else's money... especially the Evil 1% ers... unfortunately you will eventually discover that that is a lie also.
No George, I'm just pointing out that you are biased, and apparently incapable of acknowledging that you might be wrong, or at least not right, about something.

And who said GDP was the best measure? There you go putting words in people's mouths again. But it is one measure that can give some indication. There are others.
But I'm quite sure that if the GDP measure showed the US healthcare system in a better light, you wouldn't be complaining about it.

And your point about the "evil 1% ers" is, frankly, juvenile. Who said anything about that? Everyone pays for the NHS through a National Insurance system. Not just the rich. In fact, the rich don't pay it on their higher earnings; there is a cut off point. But don't let the truth get in the way of an opportunity to points score.... even if it's an obvious own-goal!

Sometimes George you seem quite intelligent and deep thinking; on ocassions you make very good points and enhance the quality of a thread. This was not one of those ocassions.

Please, dont make a mistake thinking that Im posting this triumphantly. Its a sad story and in a way Id rather be wrong, however, to clarify certain issues let me quote the most recent bbc article regarding the matter-"US doctor said it was now too late to give Charlie nucleoside therapy". Baby guards brain, AS PREVIOUSLY DECLARED BY NHS SPECIALISTS,is damaged beyond any hope of repair(by nowdays medicine standards). THEREFORE, had the British government not stepped in and raised concerns, that poor baby would have been shipped over to US and experimented upon. The treatment would have been unsuccessful, YET the greedy doctor would have cashed in on 1.3 million donated by charitable people of Britain(...and others prob as well)...make ur own minds up

Alfie Evans suffered even more that I would have believed because of the evil arrogance and demand for power over citizens and parents by the NHS and the British courts
The hospital, Alder Hey, removed the child’s breathing tube – fully expecting him to quickly die, but he didn’t.

Alfie survived for nearly a week. He still lived. Then they stopped feeding him. When that didn’t work, they stopped giving him fluids
What we do know is that shortly after the fluids were removed, a nurse reportedly administered four injections of unknown drugs to the baby, late at night. Two hours later, he was dead. His parents weren’t allowed to be with him.

As if this weren’t bad enough, the child was buried with no postmortem examination, the result of a specific order by the U.K. High Court, even though pro-life advocate John Allman made an “urgent application” to determine just what did kill Alfie.

LifeSite news reported that the Liverpool coroner, Andre Rebello OBE, stated definitively that Alfie Evans died from “natural causes” and he had “no duty to investigate further.”

Mr. Allman continued his efforts to force a post mortem, especially since Alfie’s “original disease” remained unidentified, and the issue of the mysterious four drugs remained a question. He argued to the High Court that Alfie was being detained by the state, but the judge was not convinced.

Liberty and capitalism has its advantages. The US has successfully affected the entire world with chronic diseases. The US "fee based" system works well and doctors become wealthy. Even some doctors scam so they can make even more money.

The US advanced the concept that saturated fat was the cause of all problems. Capitalism thrived on removing fat for all foods and replacing with cheap high fructose corn syrup. Put that in everything, put wheat gluten in everything, we can feed the world. US science must be great, so the world followed.

When it was determined that smoking had a direct link to heart disease and smoking became unpopular, heart disease actually went down. But now it has increased. Why? Insulin resistance. Most people become carbohydrate intolerant when the massive amounts of grain related carbs and sugars are put into our bodies.

The result is the US spends more money than any country on medical but our health is way down.

Yes British health service is terrible. US health service is worse. Greedy capitalism is no better, and even worse than the other isms out there.

A ot of assertions with no facts. No surprise here. At least our Government doesn't have the right to order the killing of a child and deny the parents even the right to visit it in its last days.... yet.

Yes, the U.S. Health system is bad enough. But that is because while we haven't yet caught up with other socialist systems like the Brits. unfortunately, we are following in their path.

The US has and is exporting death to the world.
S.A.D. Diets
The ‘Standard American Diet’ (S.A.D.), is quite sad indeed. Likewise, the ‘Standard UK Diet’, or S.U.K. Diet, is not much better. Obesity rates in the US are at 34% of all adults or 78 million people! Child obesity rates are over 17%. The UK is the “fat man of Europe”, with obesity at 25% of adults . Now 3 times higher than in the 1980’s, it’s getting worse everyday. Obesity related diseases include heart disease, stroke, type-2 diabetes and cancer. In the US the obesity related health costs are estimated at $178 billion per year!1

What’s Causing This Obesity Crisis?
Eating too much and doing too little is commonly blamed. But eating too much of what? For some real answers, lets take a look at the USDA’s “food pyramid” diagram used as the standard guide in American diets.

Various illustrations have been used since 1943. Revisions were made in 2005 when it was changed to the “MyPyramid” guide and in 2010 it changed again to “MyPlate”. Despite the variations of the graphics, the same bad dietary advice has remained. In fact, the 1992 food pyramid was copied directly from Sweden’s food pyramid. At the time, Sweden had an even higher rate of heart disease deaths than the US!

The common theme of all versions is a diet high in carbohydrates and low in fats. Notice that the highest recommendations are for the “Bread, Cereal, Rice & Pasta Group or Grains.” Coincidentally, this is also the group with the most “processed foods.” And also “Dairy” is always a large portion.

“Processed foods” are the most unnatural foods, usually with the most harmful added ingredients (additional sugars, preservatives, dyes and “bad” fats like saturated and trans fats). In contrast, “whole foods” are foods with only 1 ingredient (corn, apple, chicken, cucumber, etc.). These help reduce cholesterol, regulate blood sugars, reduce risk for diabetes and maintain weight.

Yes.. let's blame liberty for the worlds ills. If only freedom could be abolished all of the bad things would go away. All corruption and poor decisions cease once we put it under government control..

You do realize that your first paragraph blames capitalism for the worlds chronic diseases, but your supporting paragraphs are examples of government (socialized) decisions. You are actually giving examples to undermine your own argument. I

Arenera,

You are right Socialism does cure obesity. Ever heart of the Maduro diet?
Venezuela's political and economic crisis has done deep and lasting damage to its population’s health. In the past year, 74.3 percent of the population has lost weight -- an average of 8.7 kilograms (19 pounds) per person – because of food scarcity, according to a recent study by three of Caracas' largest universities (UCAB, USB and UCV) and the nonprofit Bengoa Foundation. The problem has its roots in 17 years of economic mismanagement and the gradual deterioration of Venezuela's means of producing, importing and distributing foodstuffs and other necessities. The situation has gotten so dire that Venezuelans have termed the way they've modified their eating habits the "Maduro diet."

We actually agree on something here, it seems.

But tell me this. Are there any rats left in Venezuela? I suspect they have all been eaten. Along with all the cats and dogs. Any information on that?

Just another of the many wonderful benefits of socialism.

The 19 countries with the world's best healthcare systems

Source
The Legatum Institute, a London-based research institute, released its 11th annual global Prosperity Index in November, a huge survey that ranks the most prosperous countries in the world.
The organisation compares over 100 variables to come up with its list, splitting those variables into nine subindexes. One of the big components of the ranking is how healthy a country's people are.

Health is measured by three key components by the Legatum Institute: a country's basic mental and physical health, health infrastructure, and the availability of preventative care.

The countries that have the best scores in the Prosperity Index, and therefore rank as the world's healthiest, are generally big, developed economies with large amounts of resources.

While Britain just about makes the top of the list, the United States misses out, ranking just 30th overall in the world for the standard of its healthcare services.
We be 30 George. Does that make us evil and hexxish?

19. United Kingdom — Britain's National Health Service is the jewel in the crown of the British welfare state, offering free-at-the–point-of-access care for all citizens. The NHS is a constant source of controversy within British politics, but still ranks as one of the best healthcare systems on the planet.

18. France — Famed for the quality of its health services, France is close to the top of the pile. The country's average life expectancy is 83.

17. New Zealand — New Zealand is one of the most active countries in the world, with the nation punching well above its weight in international sporting competitions. It has an average life expectancy of 81.5 years.

16. Spain — According to Expatica, "Spain spends about 10% of its GDP on healthcare, and is ranked sixth in the EU for the number of doctors with around four doctors per 1,000 people."

15. South Korea — South Korea's healthcare system is funded through the mandatory National Health Insurance Scheme, and covers around 97% of the country's population. The life expectancy in the country is 82.2 years.

14. Finland — According to Finland Health, the country has the highest rate of satisfaction with its healthcare system of any in Europe. Finland's life expectancy is 81.4 years.

13. Qatar — The best standards of health in the Middle East can be found in wealthy Qatar. The nation has recently taken steps to implement a universal healthcare system across the entire country.

12. Germany — Despite a love of beer and sausages, Germans are some of the world's healthiest people. The country's average life expectancy is 81.1 years.

11. Belgium — The country has universal healthcare, but also requires mandatory health insurance for all citizens.

10. Australia — With great weather and low pollution, Australia ranks as the healthiest nation in the southern hemisphere. Its average life expectancy is 82.8, the 4th highest in the world. Shoutout to Elizabeth!

9. Hong Kong — The tiny city-state of Hong Kong has 11 private and 42 public hospitals to serve its population of just over 7.2 million people. In 2012, women in Hong Kong had the longest average life expectancy of any demographic on earth.

8. Netherlands — For three consecutive years the Netherlands has gained the number one spot at the top of the annual Euro health consumer index, which compares healthcare systems in Europe, scoring over 900 points out of 1000 each time.

7. Norway — Norway, along with its Scandinavian counterparts, often comes close to global quality of life rankings, and one reason is the health of its citizens. The country's healthcare system is free for children under 16, but adults must pay for services. The country spends more per person on healthcare than any other country on earth.

6. Sweden — Northern European countries like Sweden score highly on most healthcare rankings. Swedish men have the 4th highest life expectancy of any nation, living to an average of 80.7 years.

5. Austria — The central European state has a healthcare system based on mandatory health insurance. Austrians pay a premium of around €25 per month for their health services.

4. Japan — The country's life expectancy is 83.7, the highest on the planet. That has caused demographic issues in the country, with its population ageing rapidly.

3. Switzerland — Rich, beautiful, and incredibly healthy. Switzerland has pretty much all anyone could want from a country. Its healthcare service is universal and is based upon the mandatory holding of health insurance by all citizens.

2. Singapore — Another small city-state to make the top of the Prosperity Index's health sub-index. Singapore's close to six million citizens have an average life expectancy of 83.1 years old.

1. Luxembourg — Nestled between Belgium, France, and Germany, the wealthy nation of Luxembourg tops the Legatum Institute's health sub-index. The country's average life expectancy is 82.

Arenera,

There are many studies by many people. of which one may believe or not, which do not all agree as to which health care system is the best. The fact of the matter all of these studies are flawed, first, because they compare "apples" to "oranges" no matter how you do them, because each population is different, and second because often the definition of what is best is distorted, such as some health care studies rate a health care system as better because it is "free" to all.

We could get into competing studies about which country is graded best, but after all of the smoke has cleared, you will find that no health insurance company, nor any hospital in a free Capitalistic country, can demand that one kill a baby despite the desires of the parents, and when the baby doesn't immediately die as predicted by the doctors, starve the baby to make sure it died, and even possibly injected it with poison to make sure that the baby dies, then disallow an autopsy to determine what illness the baby actually had, and whether there was poison administered, all the while denying the parents even visitation of their baby, as this slow tortuous arrogant murder occurs.

It takes the power of a totalitarian government, which a socialist government is, to do something so evil and despicable!

It is extremely sad when an innocent dies.

Your and my greedy capitalistic government, business, medical, pharmaceuticals and secret combinations, are sending hundreds of thousands of people to early deaths, including innocents. Is this not evil and despicable?
n 2008, over 616,000 people died of heart disease.

In 2008, heart disease caused almost 25% of deaths—almost one in every four—in the United States.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women. More than half of the deaths due to heart disease in 2008 were in men.

Coronary heart disease is the most common type of heart disease. In 2008, 405,309 people died from coronary heart disease.

Every year about 785,000 Americans have a first coronary attack. Another 470,000 who have already had one or more coronary attacks have another attack.

In 2010, coronary heart disease alone was projected to cost the United States $108.9 billion. This total includes the cost of health care services, medications, and lost productivity.
The carnage that is propagated by the United States of America is evil and despicable. Our capitalism is no better, possible worse, than the places you are pointing out.

While it is a reach to blame a Capitalistic government, business, medical, pharmaceuticals and to quote the Movie Casablanca "I'm Shocked to find secret combinations" being blamed on this site for all of the diseases and deaths in America. This issue is not whether people and groups are greedy or evil. The issue is POWER.

if a business is greedy and evil, someone can come in and start another business to be less greedy, make a smaller profit, or a better product, or be a better citizen, and you as a citizen are not FORCED to use that business.

Now you may think that some business with a patent is exercising greed, because they charge much more than the cost of manufacturing a product that cost 100s of millions of dollars of research to develop (I know you don't give a d#mn about that. However, since you like to cite statistics, look up which countries develop the most new medicines and which don't and you will see that the more socialistic a country is, the less medical innovations are discovered there). The fact of the matter, you do have other options.

The strange brain short in the brains of Socialist thinkers is that they somehow discover that people are evil and greedy, so the solution for this is to give power over all those evil and greedy people to other PEOPLE (in the government) to control the greed and evil of others, which never works... because... people are evil and greedy...including those in the government.

I'm just pointing out that the US is worse than England in medical practice. You don't like someone telling you what to do. We take a different approach in the US, we promote things by advertising, lies, and the medical profession not giving honest information to consumers, because they are paid by the pharmaceuticals.

It isn't any better here in the US than it is in England. Since we are greed based, it is probably worse here. Just look at our President.
