Puerto Rico still without electrical power 90 days after Hurricane Maria

Post by JK4Woods »

Today's Denver News article chronicled that 50% of the inhabitants on Puerto Rico are still without electrical power ninety days after Hurricane Maria struck the island.

Most residents of a town of 30,000 wait in long lines two times a week to receive a box of basic food items and a case of water bottles.
Residents of one apartment building then have to wait hours for their chance to cook their families meals on the building manager's stove.

This is Gov't at its best... It doesn't matter where you live... no state government, county, or town leadership is prepared to provide any meaningful organized relief when a statewide incident occurs. The dozen people at the state emergency management level will collapse after working 48 hours straight right after an emergency of this magnitude. Turf wars always come to the forefront, and priorities always provide most relief to government "leaders", and then to first responders support. As it trickles out into the void, time is no ones friend.

Better to be some what self-prepared. Follow the churches guidelines for preparedness and you would be able to weather this hardship much better.

Power outage, natural gas shortage, gasoline lines, busted highways along the front range of Colorado, pandemic, severe drop of stock market value causing a "banking holiday", any number of other potential scenarios could provide a similar degree of hardship to each state we live in.

I urge you to reflect this season (New Years Goals, etc) on what incremental things you and your family can do to become better prepared.

All those US Citizens waiting in long lines in Puerto Rico, waiting for a handout and someone to provide relief, have a very difficult time being part of the solution. When we are even moderately prepared, we can be part of the solution, having enough to eat to keep going helping others has a pretty big impact.

Look at Houston and other flooded areas... Many homes still to gut out, and instant relief work has tapered off.

If ye are prepared, ye shall not fear...

When we have a big disaster in the continental US, power companies work together. Linemen who can be spared will volunteer to drive to the location where they are needed to help with recovery. Since they drive, they are bringing everything they need with them.

Puerto Rico is an island with no road access from the mainland. Therefore, power companies are unable to let a few volunteers drive out to help with the recovery.
Furthermore, the power grid in Puerto Rico is substandard, not having been maintained to the standards we all expect. And local government is getting in the way.

Of course, this is all Trump's fault.

My husband works for a power company and he says they have guys there working on it. He says there are about 15 different companies that have people working there to get power up and running.
