The government has the power to collect taxes.

Anyway, no less an example than George Washington forced citizens to buy things:

That every citizen, so enrolled and notified, shall, within six months thereafter, provide himself with a good musket or firelock, a sufficient bayonet and belt, two spare flints, and a knapsack, a pouch, with a box therein, to contain not less than twenty four cartridges, suited to the bore of his musket or firelock, each cartridge to contain a proper quantity of powder and ball; or with a good rifle, knapsack, shot-pouch, and powder-horn, twenty balls suited to the bore of his rifle, and a quarter of a pound of powder; and shall appear so armed, accoutred and provided, when called out to exercise or into service, except, that when called out on company days to exercise only, he may appear without a knapsack. That the commissioned Officers shall severally be armed with a sword or hanger, and espontoon; and that from and after five years from the passing of this Act, all muskets from arming the militia as is herein required, shall be of bores sufficient for balls of the eighteenth part of a pound; and every citizen so enrolled, and providing himself with the arms, ammunition and accoutrements, required as aforesaid, shall hold the same exempted from all suits, distresses, executions or sales, for debt or for the payment of taxes.

2012 Elections

Boston, MA - Mitt Romney today released his weekly podcast on President Obama's failed economic record and broken promises. The podcast is available each week on mittromney.com.

Hello, this is Mitt Romney.
And this week, Democrats met in Charlotte to re-nominate Barack Obama for President. They tried to recapture the spirit of 2008, when then-candidate Obama stood in front of Greek columns and made a lot of promises about how he'd make life better for Americans. He was elected, but things did not get better. Under President Obama, we've endured the worst economic recovery since the Great Depression.

This week, after another Democrat convention filled with nice words and a lot of promises, Friday's jobs report once again brought this administration back down to earth. The unemployment rate has now been above 8 percent for 43 straight months. Nearly 47 million Americans are on food stamps - an all-time record high, and 15 million more Americans than when President Obama took office. Nearly 60 percent of the jobs that have been created after the recession was officially over are low-wage jobs, and they pay less than $14 an hour. And our national debt recently reached a staggering $16 trillion, an increase of almost $6 trillion under President Obama.

Americans are hurting, they're paying a heavy toll for these years of drift and disappointment, trying hard to hang on for a brighter day. But when we looked to Charlotte this week for signs of hope from the party in power, what did we see? We saw a party completely out of ideas. We didn't hear one new idea for throwing a lifeline to the struggling middle class. Instead, we heard a stubborn defense of policies that haven't worked.

We saw a president who once promised to unite us, double-down on the politics of fear and division. Four years ago, he said, "If you don't have a record to run on, then you paint your opponent as someone people should run from." That was Candidate Obama describing the strategy that is now at the heart of President Obama's campaign.

A couple days ago, the President was asked to grade his economic performance. Words like "disappointing" and "dismal" come to mind. But instead, he chose "incomplete" - because that's the best he can do as he asks the American people for a second term.

President Obama is hoping you'll let him advance with an "incomplete." But on November 6th, Americans should hold him accountable. I'm asking you to vote for the ticket that's offering real solutions for the middle class, with a plan to create 12 million jobs over the next four years.

A weak economy and unprecedented debt may be the best President Obama can do - but it is not the best America can do. I commit to you that I will be the president this moment demands. Join our cause, and help us deliver a better future for all Americans this November.
I'm Mitt Romney, and thanks for listening.

Mitt Romney delivered the following remarks on attacks on American diplomatic missions in Egypt and Libya:

“Americans woke up this morning with tragic news and felt heavy hearts as they considered that individuals who have served in our diplomatic corps were brutally murdered across the world. This attack on American individuals and embassies is outrageous, it's disgusting. It breaks the hearts of all of us who think of these people who have served, during their lives, the cause of freedom, and justice and honor. We mourn their loss and join together in prayer that the spirit of the Almighty might comfort the families of those who have been so brutally slain.

“Four diplomats lost their life, including the U.S. Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens, in the attack on our embassy at Benghazi, Libya. And, of course, with these words, I extend my condolences to the grieving loved ones, who have left behind, as a result of these who have lost their lives in the service of our nation, and I know that the people across America are grateful for their service and we mourn their sacrifice.

“America will not tolerate attacks against our citizens and against our embassies. We will defend also our constitutional rights of speech and assembly and religion. We have confidence in our cause in America. We respect our Constitution. We stand for the principles our Constitution protects. We encourage other nations to understand and respect the principles of our Constitution because we recognize that these principles are the ultimate source of freedom for individuals around the world.

“I also believe the Administration was wrong to stand by a statement sympathizing with those who had breached our embassy in Egypt instead of condemning their actions. It's never too early for the United States Government to condemn attacks on Americans, and to defend our values. The White House distanced itself last night from the statement, saying it wasn't ‘cleared by Washington.’ That reflects the mixed signals they’re sending to the world.

“The attacks in Libya and Egypt underscore that the world remains a dangerous place and that American leadership is still sorely needed. In the face of this violence, America cannot shrink from the responsibility to lead. American leadership is necessary to ensure that events in the region don’t spin out of control. We cannot hesitate to use our influence in the region to support those who share our values and our interests. Over the last several years, we have stood witness to an Arab Spring that presents an opportunity for a more peaceful and prosperous region, but also poses the potential for peril, if the forces of extremism and violence are allowed to control the course of events.

“We must strive to ensure that the Arab Spring does not become an Arab Winter.”

PALM BEACH, Fla. – Rush Limbaugh, the top-rated radio host in America, is now calling President Obama “a serial liar” who is “delusional” and “pathological” in fabrications being told by his administration.“Barack Obama is a serial liar, and I think it’s time to call him out on this,” Limbaugh said Wednesday afternoon
His analysis began with the Obama administration’s claim the recent onslaught against the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya, was in response to an anti-Muslim movie on YouTube. Libyan President Mohamed Magarief said the film had “nothing to do” with the attack.

“Reaction should have been, if it was genuine, should have been six months earlier. So it was postponed until the 11th of September,”Magarief told NBC News. “They chose this date, 11th of September to carry a certain message.” Limbaugh said, “They have lied to us for a week about this video. Obama went to the U.N. yesterday and made most of his speech or quite a large part of his speech about this video, which even now, nobody has ever seen. All they’re doing is promoting it. All they’re doing is giving others who want to be agitated by it an excuse to be.”

When pondering why Obama and his administration would lie, Limbaugh had a hard time coming up with an explanation. “I’m not a liar. I can’t explain them,” he said. “It’s pathological, it’s the same as trying to explain Bill Clinton. These people construct with all of their lies an actual reality they live in. I think they tell the lie so often – it’s the definition of a pathological liar, you believe the lies that you tell. It is a sickness. And this is just the latest illustration of Obama as a serial liar.”

Limbaugh then analyzed Obama’s economic claims, noting Obama on “60 Minutes” blamed his predecessor, President George W. Bush, for the rising U.S. debt. “The fact is Obama is responsible for 5 and a half trillion dollars in debt in just four years,” he said. “Bush had nothing to do with it. That doesn’t even count what’s coming with Obamacare. I’m not denying that Bush was a big spender, but the debt that we’ve got now, 5 and a half trillion dollars of it, took place in the last three and a half years with Obama at the helm. It’s his. He owns it, he broke it.”

Limbaugh said the U.S. is headed for an economic collapse if something doesn’t change: “It’s difficult to pinpoint when, but it’s going to happen. This is unsustainable. This kind of spending, and this kind of debt and the debt service cannot continue and at the same time have a thriving and growing private-sector economy. Now Obama gets away with these statements which come fast and frequently, but there’s something not right about this. These lies just flow out of his mouth and off of his lips as naturally as a baby’s cries.”

He continued: “I don’t know if it’s purposeful, if he’s delusional or if it’s strategic. It could be a combination of those things. He’s running commercials in battleground states claiming that Romney’s tax plan would increase taxes on the middle class by $2,000. There’s nothing, there’s not a single thing in Romney’s tax plan that raises taxes on the middle class. Romney cut taxes by 20 percent. He doesn’t raise taxes on anybody. It’s Obama who’s going to be raising taxes. Obama is in effect, what he’s doing, is taking what his policies are going to be, his future policies, and what his policies have been and he’s simply saying that they’re Romney’s. It’s an artful attempt at … transference … you take what you’re doing and take what you’ve done and blame it on the other guys, as though you haven’t even been president for three and a half years. And you’ve got a supportive media out there helping to spread the lies.”

Limbaugh called Obama delusional with the president’s claim he has created some 4.5 million jobs since taking office in 2009. “It’s absurd,” Limbaugh said. “The math doesn’t work out. There aren’t any jobs being created on a net basis. We’re losing jobs. There are more people unemployed today than there were when Obama took office. There are over 2 and half million fewer jobs to be had in this country since Obama took office. This idea that there’s job growth? That Obama’s created jobs? He wouldn’t know how to create a job if he had to. He wouldn’t know how to GET a job if he had to.

“You have to ignore all the people who’ve lost their jobs. You have to ignore all the people who have dropped out of the workforce. The net figure, when everything is factored in, the best I’ve been able to find is 1.3 million jobs lost. A universe of over 2 million jobs that have just gone away, not jobs that were filled, just jobs from the universe of jobs, the labor-force participation rate. It’s down by 2 million. And it’s even worse when you consider that in four years, the working population of the country has increased by 8 million or so.”
“Obama hasn’t created anything. What’s happened is destruction,” he concluded. “So many Americans are literally fearful, literally scared of the future.” http://www.wnd.com/2012/09/rush-limbaug ... rial-liar/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

In 2008, President Obama vowed to lead the most open administration in U.S. history. Not only has that promise failed to materialize, but the Obama White House is among the most secretive in history and routinely breaks federal laws to keep damaging information from coming to light. Christopher Horner is a senior fellow at the Competitive Enterprise Institute specializing in energy and environmental issues, although he studies other issues as well. He has filed scores of Freedom of Information Act, or FOIA, requests to procure documents from the past three administrations. Horner told WND’s Greg Corombos that the Obama administration has routinely tried to squelch his requests by forwarding them to the wrong agencies, claiming he would have to pay huge fees for the documents to be processed or just flatly ignored. Several times, Horner has been forced to sue the government for the requests to be honored.

As frustrating as that bureaucratic maze can be, Horner said the administration is also guilty of intentionally breaking the law. In his new book, “The Liberal War on Transparency,” Horner details how multiple officials, including former Deputy White House Chief of Staff Jim Messina, conducted business on private email accounts so those communications would never end up on the public record. Messina, who is now manager of the Obama re-election effort, used a personal email account to negotiate with the drug industry and bring them on board the push to pass Obamacare in exchange for $4 billion in incentives. Horner said those emails were deleted, despite federal law demanding that all government business be preserved and done through official means of communication. He warned that this is just the tip of the iceberg. “I’ve got an affidavit, which I reveal in the book for the first time, from an official in the government acknowledging that they’ve got essentially a cyber bonfire going on at all times in the administration,” said Horner, who said the “bonfire” is tasked with “destroying records, using nongovernmental computers to access governmental servers.” He explained, “They’ve got this system rigged whereby that destroys all traces of the record on the government system, and because they’re using a private computer very deliberately there’s no government computer you can then find the trace of the record on. If they did what they were supposed to do, you would leave these electronic footprints everywhere. It’s a very organized government-wide systemic effort to avoid leaving any trails. The problem is, that’s against the law.”

From way out here in Australia, about as far from the US as it is possible to get on the earth, it seems to me that Obama looked and sounded tiered. As if he had lost his will to fight on in the election. While this would be understandable if he were far behind in the polls but according to all we hear, and we have a weekly TV show here that tries to explain US politics to us, he is leading in the polls and is likely to win reelection. What up with him anyway. Romney on the other hand still seems like an unknown quantity. Most people here know next to nothing about him. There is worry about how he conducts himself when dealing with international matters.

Here in Portugal, and most of Europe, for most left leaning people Mitt Romney is a crook and a liar, a "cowboy", ignorant of the world.

The press is to say the least acclaiming Obama, with a bias that is as showing as it is unsurprising. The Republican Party is, for the press, a bunch of ignorant and uncult heatheads, interwoven with the military and defense industries, and a danger to the World peace. Obama, which has been until the campaign started demonized, as the US is also thrashed and blamed for anything and any problem on earth, is now a beam of hope for the left, a cult and fearless leader, fighting a bunch of troglodites.

This grant was brought to you by the letters “A” and “R” — as in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, aka the “stimulus bill.” Sesame Workshop, the independent nonprofit corporation that produces the popular childrens’ program Sesame Street, received a $1,067,532 stimulus bill grant in August 2010, via the Department of Health and Human Services. The funding was to promote healthy eating according to the federal Recovery.gov website:

SW [i.e., Sesame Workshop] will carry out an expansion of its highly successful Healthy Habits for Life initiative, which promotes improved nutrition and increased physical activity, targeting low-income preschool-aged children and their families and care providers. The projected created “1.47″ new jobs, the website reported. How they could calculate this to a hundredth of a percent is anybody’s guess. In any event, that comes out to about $726,000 per job created.

Pressed by Obama and moderator Jim Lehrer to identify federal spending he would cut, Romney repeated what he has been saying for a year: “I will eliminate all programs by this test: Is the program so critical it’s worth borrowing money from China to pay for it? And if not, I’ll get rid of it. Obamacare’s on my list.” Gently reminding the audience that, as a PBS employee, Lehrer was hardly a disinterested party, Romney said, “I’m sorry, Jim, I’m going to stop the subsidy to PBS. I’m going to stop other things.” He added, “I like PBS. I love Big Bird. Actually, I like you, too. But I’m not going to keep on spending money on things to borrow money from China to pay for it.”

As even the Huffington Post admits, ending taxpayer subsidies won’t kill Big Bird. HuffPo cites the manufacturer (outsourced to China) of Big Bird’s costumes to the effect that, “even if Romney kills PBS, Big Bird will survive … ‘It’s a business, and a lucrative one.’” That’s an understatement. Sesame Workshop made $46.9 million last year from licensing Big Bird and other Sesame Street characters on an astonishing variety of merchandise, from diapers to backpacks, from clothing to toys, from decor to accessories. HuffPo cites an analyst who estimates that Hasbro’s Fisher-Price division generates $70 to $75 million a year in revenue from “Sesame Street” toys alone. The Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which funds PBS (and NPR), reports its federal appropriations for 2013 as $445 million – up about 37 percent from $325 million in 2000. This corporate welfare for CPB may have been an indulgence we could afford in 2000, when the federal budget was running an $86 billion surplus. Today, with a deficit in excess of $1.3 trillion, it’s a luxury, and we must cut back. It’s a small cut, perhaps equivalent in a family budget to forgoing a single latte at Starbucks. But small cuts add up, and if we can’t cut corporate welfare, we can’t cut anything.

2012 Elections

Post by Elizabeth »

In the first Presidential debate Barack Obama seemed adrift without his teleprompter and performed, in the words of one liberal commentator, "like he was on Xanax." The November election, which the mainstream media had been claiming was in the bag for the President, suddenly was up for grabs because of Mitt Romney's strong performance as much as the President's weak one. But a close presidential contest means that voter fraud could play an increased role when America goes to the ballot booth next month.

Voter fraud is a subject the left doesn't want to talk about and a problem it doesn't want solved. This is because the left has been working hard perfecting ways to steal Presidential elections all this past decade. Ballots marked by convicted felons, a group that helped give Al Franken his 300 vote edge in Minnesota; votes cast by Mickey Mouse and dead people; registering large numbers of illegal aliens—all of these could tip the balance in the November showdown.

After Romney’s overwhelming victory in the first debate, he now leads or is dead even in battleground States where, only days before, he was supposedly way behind. My contention is a 1-point Romney lead in those Democrat-skewed polls is really a comfortable 5- to 7-point Romney lead on Election Day. There are several specific reasons I predict a comfortable Romney victory on Election Day: The news media are ignoring signs of mass revulsion towards Obama. In the West Virginia Democratic primary, a felon got 40 percent of the vote versus Obama. In deep-blue Massachusetts and Connecticut, GOP Senate candidates are even or leading in recent polls. In pro-union Wisconsin, Walker won by a country mile. But worst of all for Obama, several recent polls show Romney competitive in Illinois — Obama’s home State. Romney is actually winning by a landslide in the suburbs of Obama’s Chicago. Even in Cook County, the country’s biggest Democratic stronghold, Romney leads by double digits among independents (43-31) and white voters (53-40). These are very bad signs for Obama.
In 2008, Democrats overwhelmingly controlled the majority of Governorships. Today, Republicans control the majority of Governorships. Presidential elections are always steered in each State by the Governor, the most powerful force in State politics.
After the 2010 census, electoral votes were added to States that lean Republican in elections: Texas, Florida, Arizona, Nevada, Georgia, South Carolina and Utah. Deep-blue Democratic States like New York, New Jersey, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota and Massachusetts lost electoral votes. That brings up an interesting point. Why is everyone running away from these ultra-liberal, high-tax States in the first place? Isn’t that alone proof of the failure of Democratic ideas? Next, follow the money trail. Yes, Obama is raising plenty of money, although there is a major question if it’s coming from illegal foreign contributors. But forget all that. What matters is that in 2008 Obama overwhelmed McCain by outspending him 10 to 1 down the stretch. That won’t happen in 2012. Romney is even with Obama, in the last two weeks of the election. That makes a huge difference in the outcome.
Christians will turn out in record numbers this year. Obama has offended Christians again and again. In the last election, 20 million evangelical Christians did not vote. They will turn out in record numbers in 2012 to defeat the most anti-Christian President in U.S. history. How motivated are Christians? Did you see the long lines around the country to support Chick-fil-A a few weeks ago? You’ll see those same lines on Election Day.
Voter rolls have been purged in 2012 of felons and illegals in many States, particularly Florida and Ohio. Turnout of Democrats will be nothing like 2008. That brings up another important question. What kind of political party relies on felons and people illegally in the country to win elections?
The “enthusiasm factor” for Romney is huge. Conservatives are focused, intense, motivated and enthusiastic. Democrats turned out for Obama in record numbers in 2008. Today, they are demoralized. A big edge goes to Romney on Election Day as conservatives, white voters, middle-class voters and independents turn out in record numbers for Romney. I know several people who voted for Obama in 2008, but never will again. Does anyone know a McCain voter who will vote for Obama in 2012? There are none. Finally, history proves that a majority of undecided voters break for the challenger. Romney will take most of the undecided voters on Election Day — just like Ronald Reagan did versus Jimmy Carter in 1980. Romney’s fantastic debate performance gave them confidence to choose the challenger. This is Carter/Reagan all over again. The same horrible economy. The same economically ignorant fool in the White House bringing misery to Americans. The same economic collapse under the weight of socialist, pro-union, soak-the-rich, demonize-the-business-owners policies.
I predict the same result on Election Day. Mitt Romney will win in a landslide. And If I’m wrong, God help the United States of America.

There was snark. There were guffaws. According to Fox News commentator Brit Hume there was “derisive sneering.”
In short, he said, it was a “cranky old man debating a polite young man.” Chris Wallace said Vice President Joe Biden was “openly contemptuous” of the GOP candidate for his office, Rep. Paul Ryan, and said he’d never quite seen such a performance. It all happened tonight at the vice presidential debate as Biden tried to make up ground in the presidential race that had been lost a week earlier by Barack Obama in his debate with GOP candidate Mitt Romney. Analysts on site of the debate described Biden’s actions as “smirking” and “mugging.”

On one of the most controversial issues raised for debate, Ryan promised that a Romney-Ryan administration would be pro-life in its policy, unlike the Obama administration now that supports abortion at will “without reservation and with taxpayer funding.”
He also said he opposes the “assault” on religious rights being implemented by those installing Obamacare as a takeover of health care decision-making – citing the dozens of lawsuits brought by religious individuals against the government over its demand they fund abortifacients. Vice President Joe Biden said he personally believes that life begins at conception, but wouldn’t do anything to stop others from taking the lives of the unborn. The arguments came the only meeting of the two candidates for the No. 2 office. “Our faith informs us of everything we do,” Ryan said. He said his Catholic faith plays a role in his position, but reason and science complete his position. “I believe life begins at conception. The policy of a Romney administration would be to oppose abortion except in cases of rape, incest and to save the life of the mother,” he said. Biden also said he was “practicing Catholic” but he would “refuse to impose his beliefs on equally devout Christians…” “Unlike my friend here, the congressman, I do not believe that we have a right to tell other people that women can’t control their bodies. That’s a decision between them and their doctor,” Biden said. Biden repeatedly laughed while Ryan was speaking, and interrupted and talked over the congressman, who remained largely serious on the issues under discussion, abortion, war, and national security, and waited for Biden to complete his statements before expressing his own comments.

On the issue of Syria, Biden said “the facts” are that Obama is working with people in the region to identify who would provide a government when Bashir al-Assad falls. “We are doing it exactly right,” he said. Ryan said the fact that Obama did not act sooner against Assad means that al-Qaida now has gained a foothold in Syria.“Meanwhile, about 30,000 Syrians are dead,” he said. On Benghazi, and the terror attack that killed four Americans, Biden blamed the intelligence network for telling the Obama administration the violence was sparked by a film project critical of Islam. Ryan questioned why Obama spent two weeks defending that story, when intelligence sources at this point are saying they knew immediately it was a terror attack.

On the question of Iran’s pursuit of nuclear weapons, Biden said the Obama administration was exactly right, working with other nations on sanctions. He accused Ryan of wanting “to go do war.” And Biden said although he could not talk about classified information, he “was confident” the U.S. “could deal a serious blow to the Iranians.” Ryan said the red line is that Iran cannot be allowed to gain a nuclear weapon, and he explained when Iranian leaders see the U.S. as weak and undecided, they will not divert from their stated goal of having such weapons. Biden called Ryan’s comments a “bunch of stuff.” He said Iran doesn’t have a weapon to install fissile materials in, even if those materials were being developed. By Ryan contended that Iran actually now is “four years closer to a nuclear weapon.”

On the economy, Biden boasted of rescuing General Motors, making sure of tax cuts for the middle class and trying to “level the playing field.” He accused Ryan of holding hostage more tax cuts for the middle class. Ryan pointed out that in Scranton, Pa., Biden’s hometown, when Obama took office the unemployment was 8.5 percent. But he said now it’s 10 percent. He noted that the economic growth in the U.S. is far below where it should be, and is falling further. And he said Obamacare’s 21 taxes include 12 that hit directly at the middle class.nnHe defended Romney, who was criticized for stating that 47 percent of Americans don’t pay income taxes.“As the vice president knows,” Ryan said. “Sometimes the words don’t come out of your mouth the right way.” Ryan noted the billions of dollars Obama spent on cars in Finland, other projects in China and the like. “I know you’re under duress,” Ryan told Biden. They disagreed over each other’s plans, with Biden repeating the claim Romney wants a $5 trillion tax cut, something Ryan said was incorrect. “Look, who do you want to trust on this?” Biden said, looking straight into the camera. “This is what politicians do when they don’t have a record to run on,” Ryan said, explaining the strategy then was for them to make people afraid – and want to run away from someone.
