Stem Cells Therapy

Post by LdsMarco »

Has anyone gotten stem cells treatment? Pro's - Con's?

I'm a bit worried about two members going to Oklahoma and receiving injections for knee and hip pain. Just because this doctor is LDS doesn't mean it's safe. I just don't think these two made enough research to know if there's any particular risks they're taking.

I highly doubt they've asked their primary doctor if it was okay

Where did the stem cells come from? Aborted embryos?

A neighbor in my ward is going to Mexico to receive stem cell therapy for Lyme disease. I don't know much more beyond this.

It should of course be noted that there is no panacea with stem cell treatment, or any other medical treatment.

There are a lot of sources to learn about stem cell therapy. In the US there are many tight restrictions on stem cell therapy, as seen here.
https://www.fda.gov/ForConsumers/Consum ... 286155.htm

Stem cells can be derived from two primary sources. Ethical and unethical. An ethical source would be a source that doesn't require ending the life of another human to obtain them. Examples of "Ethical" sources are:
Wharton's jelly - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wharton%27s_jelly
Cord blood - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cord_blood
and Somatic cells - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adult_stem_cell

Examples of "Unethical" sources are:
Embryonic - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Embryonic_stem_cell
Aborted Babies - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stem_cell#Fetal

Some of them are also of "Questionable" origin, such as Amniotic stem cells, which could be obtained ethically. Yet, are more often obtained from Aborted Fetuses - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amniotic_stem_cells

There are many other ways of obtaining stem cells. Some of them may be better at specific applications. There are also different methods of administration, intravenous, intramuscular, etc.
Here is an interesting conversation from a few weeks ago about Mel Gibson's father being treated with Ethically derived stem cell therapy.

Whatever your ailment, best bet is to check Dr. Gundry and Mercola for probable solutions. I was diagnosed with Barrett’s Esophagus many years ago, and just discovered great relief by avoiding Lectins in tomatoes and beans, but pumpkin seeds seem ok. Lectin Shield works well for limited exposure, but good luck getting any now. :?

I seriously doubt their primary doctor could give any good advice on this. There are hundreds of things most doctors couldn't give advice about, and when they do, 85% is unfounded (according to the medical study I read, lol).

But then you would be disobeying the words of President Utchdorf's' conference talk1.5 or so years ago... And, of course, disproving his words, too.

"After a recent medical procedure, my very capable doctors explained what I needed to do to heal properly. But first I had to relearn something about myself I should have known for a long time: as a patient, I’m not very patient.

Consequently I decided to expedite the healing process by undertaking my own Internet search. I suppose I expected to discover truth of which my doctors were unaware or had tried to keep from me.

It took me a little while before I realized the irony of what I was doing. Of course, researching things for ourselves is not a bad idea. But I was disregarding truth I could rely on and instead found myself being drawn to the often-outlandish claims of Internet lore.

Sometimes, the truth may just seem too straightforward, too plain, and too simple for us to fully appreciate its great value. So we set aside what we have experienced and know to be true in pursuit of more mysterious or complicated information. Hopefully we will learn that when we chase after shadows, we are pursuing matters that have little substance and value."
