County in Oregon will force organic farms to be sprayed with Roundup

Post by nvr »

We order organic grains, dairy, and spices about every month or so from Azure Standard (not sure if anyone else uses them). They're great.
Recently, they got word that the county, in an effort to eradicate noxious weeds, will be compelling all farms in the county to be sprayed with Roundup and other herbicides. This would, of course, eliminate their status as an organic farm and harm their business as well as leave one less reliable place to get food not contaminated with glyphosphate. (Glyphosphate has been shown* to adversely affect friendly gut flora thereby favoring the growth of harmful bacteria, which eventually leads to leaky gut syndrome and all kinds of autoimmune** problems).

If you have a soft spot for organic food and the farmers who bring it to you, consider writing to Sherman County (Lauren Hernandez, lhernandez@co.sherman.or.us) and let them know how this might not be such a good plan.

Here's an email from the Azure Farm manager describing the upcoming court order in more detail. Not sure what the deal is with some of these counties in Oregon..
We need help spreading the word about an urgent situation Azure is facing.

Azure Farms has a productive organic farm located in Moro, Oregon in Sherman County that has been certified organic for about 18 years and produces almost all of the Azure organic wheat, field peas, barley, Einkorn, and beef . Sherman Co. is changing the interpretation of its statutory code from controlling noxious weeds to eradicating noxious weeds(Morning Glory, Canada Thistle, and Whitetop which have been on the farm for more years than I have been alive), which only toxic chemicals will eradicate. Organic methods, at least as far as the knowledge is currently known, can only control noxious weeds. It’s very difficult to eradicate them. As of this Spring, the County may be issuing a Court Order on May 22, 2017 to quarantine Azure Farms and possibly spray the whole farm, which will destroy all of the effort that Azure Farms has made for years to produce the very cleanest and healthiest food humanly possible. Approx. 2000 acres would be contaminated with Milestone and Escort herbicides as well as RoundUp. The County would then put a lien on the farm to pay for the expense of the labor and chemicals used. What happened to caring about people and health rather than the dollar in this country?

If you enjoy Azure Farm products grown in the USA and support organic farmers, contact Sherman County Court before May 22, 2017 (preferably before May 17 when the next court discussion will be held) via email at lhernandez@co.sherman.or.us or call Lauren at 541-565-3416. If enough voices that benefit from organic products speak up, the County will understand that there are people that care about their food NOT containing toxic chemicals and if the supporters of healthy food can have a louder voice than the supporters of toxic chemicals every politician will listen. PLEASE share this and overwhelm them with your voice.

Thank you for all of your prayers and support!

Sincerely,

Nathan Stelzer
Azure Farm Manager

Unbelievable. Wow, nothing a few "treats" won't accomplish nowadays.
