Essential Oils

Post by clarkkent14 »

Hey gang I am interested in learning more about essential oils. Where should I start? I hear a lot about Young Living, and DoTerra. Any advice, links, books? Thanks for your feedback :)

I took an online course-it only covered 30 oils. I also have a couple books that I use to look up what oils to use for what I want.

I know several people who like the Do-Terra oils.

Here is a link to amazon. You can look at their books on essential oils. http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_ ... ooks%2C401" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I also have used this website for info: http://www.aromaweb.com/essentialoils/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I have been slowly incorporating these into are healthcare the past couple of years. They work well. Personally had a stubborn wart disappear with Thuja. Have used Boswellia (frankincense), Oil of Oregano and Lavender for issues and they worked well. It is a bit overwhelming and confusing at times. Bought two books so far, but not impressed with those and still looking.

There are many good company's out there as has been mentioned, doTerra and Young Living. Also there is Butterfly Express and Native American Nutritionals.

This lady did a blog comparing companies-

There is Dr Christopher's School of Natural Helaling that has courses on this. The basic class is called the Family Herbalist

I am considering this one.

I have used several different brands. I settled on doTERRA. Here is a fantastic website that's great for looking up Health Concerns, Oils & Blends, Other Products to help with ailment, How to apply oils, History & Science and... Hints & Helps for using the oils.

I've had great fun with them getting rid of warts, ring worm, sealing up deep cuts, cleaning with them, getting rid of the cats fleas, detoxing, using them for the cold and flu, to ease babies teething, digestive issues, for anxiety and feeling stuck......

Have fun!

The expensive multi-level marketing company oils and the more affordable health-food store oils are exactly the same thing. When I first started using oils I was almost persuaded that I should only use the expensive ones (actually one pyramid-scheme brand in particular). Fortunately for me my husband is a chemist and he took several different oils to work and tested them on a couple of million-dollar machines. To my surprise, the inexpensive brand was exactly the same as the expensive brand. (Any tiny differences were not statistically significant.)

I would not worry about which brand you use. If you start to become persuaded that only one brand is better than all others, email/PM me and I'll send you the 25-page paper my husband wrote with his test results. Just use whatever is available and affordable.

I like the Yahoo group http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/oils_herbs_etc/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; for some essential oil questions.

Thank you so much, Charlotte! :ymhug:

What you've stated has confirmed my thoughts about oils...my mom really got into doTERRA and insisted that theirs was the most "pure", etc. You know, that whole marketing spiel. Don't get me wrong...I'm not saying doTERRA isn't good, what I'm saying is that from my experience other brands work just as well. I've used Nature's Sunshine and Mountain Rose Herbs and have been happy with both.

I am still on the fence.

Do essential oils really provide any health benefit?

I really think it depends- some people do feel the oils are beneficial(health benefit etc..) and some do not.

There's a place for oils, a place for herbs, a place for home remedies like salt water, a place for medicine, etc. I have had success using peppermint oil on headaches and stomach aches, success using raw garlic to cure a bad kidney infection that antibiotics didn't help, success using oregano oil on a yeast infection, success using a prescription steroid on a clogged eustachian tube in a child, success using heat to cure an ear infection, success gargling with salt water to cure a sore throat, etc. I'd say there's definitely a place for essential oils but it's only one tool in my toolbox. A bottle of peppermint oil is only a few dollars and it lasts forever and when I have a need for it I'm sure glad I have it. Though the same thing can be said for Tylenol.

I usually buy NOW brand essential oils. You can get them online at places like vitaglo.com for a great price. I've also used DoTerra and Young Living oils, but I'd don't like paying their higher prices. The other essential oil brands work just fine.
mes5464 wrote:Do essential oils really provide any health benefit?
The answer to that is absolutely YES. I had my first experience with essential oils while on my mission in Haiti. Decided to wear shorts on a P-Day and got a severe burn on my legs/feet. It was so bad I spent a day inside not doing anything... my companion had Lavender oil and let me use it on my legs and it healed very quickly. Lavender oil is seriously a miracle essential oil for sun burns. I've used it many times since on sun burns. It for sure is very effective. No doubt about that.

I've also been inspired to use Frankincense oil once when I was sick. I have no doubt that it contributed to healing me.

Peppermint oil is great for pain relief (and a bunch of other things). I had 'shin splints' a while back after getting into playing a lot of basketball and running. The peppermint oil was great for that.

Anyways, those are just a few examples of obvious direct benefits from essential oils. You'll read about lots and lots of uses for different oils. Some have a more obvious and direct effect than others.

The essential oils I keep on hand most are: Peppermint, Lavender, Tea Tree Oil, Frankincense, and the blend of oils that Young Living calls "Thieves".

There are a lot of good companies out there. doTERRA is a good one and I use to work for them before founding my own essential oil company http://www.earths-oils.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;. The thing that I loved about doTERRA was the founders are LDS like myself as well and I liked that. The only thing about doTERRA and Young Living etc. is their super high MLM pricing. You can get the same high quality pure essential oils for a fraction of the cost. Zija is about to enter the EO MLM market as well in Sept 2014

I really like this book as a reference for oils.
http://www.amazon.com/Essentials-Editio ... tials+book
It is a doterra book, so it will use their brand names, but it's the best one I've found.

Oh no! EOs don't damage your liver. They don't thin your digestive system as Tyenol use (or any NSAID does).
If they don't help, at least they don't hurt...

Will second this. Great book, regardless of which company you get your essential oils from.

dlbww... what companies do you like/not like? I am doing research on Essential oil companies and would love to have input.
If anyone has one that they like/don't like I would like to know the reason behind it. Not to start a war, just for personal opinion!
Thanks!

I have wanted to delve into EO for awhile but never felt drawn to any particular company. As a massage therapist, I would have clients bring in their doTerra oils for me to use. They seemed to have efficacy but I was turned off by the MLM aspect plus the prices seemed high. I was introduced to Butterfly Express and reading the descriptions of the oil and oil blends was fascinating. It would describe the benefits from physical to spiritual to emotional. The book is reasonable and describes many potential uses for the blends or single oils. I have since been using the oils quite extensively over the last several months and have been very pleased with quality, cost and how well they work. I feel that the woman that has developed these oils is gifted in her knowledge and understanding. She also has experience in herbology and homeopathic remedies.

I use Young Living. These are good tools, but they are just tools, and some usages are a bit extreme.
