Why are these allowed on the forum?

Post by freedomforall »

At the bottom of many pages is this ad. Has anyone else seen this? And why is this type of crap allowed on this forum?

Alax had a valid point. I took it at face value. At least she was dressed. :ymparty:

Actually it is based on search history, but not necessarily for a french teacher like that! It is based on whether you search for "guy" things. If you look at things guys look at, tools, camping stuff, hunting, whatever else a guy would look at, the computer then knows you are a guy and will put up ads that would appeal to a man. Or woman accordingly.

Google Ads displays ads based on the content of the page but also, and more so, based on the users interests, based on other sites the user visits, demographics, etc.

If you know the URL of the ad (where the ad links to) I can block it.

My hubby is always asking me to look up "guy" stuff on Amazon, like tents and backpacks, so I also get a few offers from French teachers along with my typical girl adverts. ;)

So your solution is to magnify the image 3-fold and make a whole thread of it instead of privately notifying Brian?

So do we see a sponsor ad based on the poster's search/browsing history, or are the ads based on our browsing?

I knew this would open a can of worms, but this still doesn't explain why they're allowed on the forum. I can appreciate a nice female just like any other heterosexual. It's up to me as to how far I take the temptation associated. I understand pornography is rampant in the church, and is not my problem. Taking care of myself is all I can handle in avoiding such traps as these. Anyone entertaining these temptations are asking for a slippery slope that will be next to impossible to get rid of. I just would rather not have the temptations be on an LDS based site. Makes no sense. I'm not blind, but I am wise. Nuff said.

Thanks for the rescue. I simply don't need this crap.

If it comes up again I'll see what the URL is. Anyone frequenting Youtube could ask for these these. In many cases, on that site one sees good and bad videos on the same page, but since one went to that certain page, perhaps it picks up on the IP address and sends this stuff forward. Just surmising.

The Google Ads are displayed based on your own browsing history.

Not that there was anything wrong with that.

Get AdBlock for either Chrome or Firefox, solves the problem completely.

I went to City Creek for the first time last month and a store had an advertisement with a lady showing a heckuvalot more skin than our mysterious Frenchwoman.

Does Adblock have third party affiliates? And now there is ADBLOCK PLUS. I checked it out on Norton Web Safe website.

https://adblockplus.org/en/firefox" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I'm not sure what their business relationship is with any other companies. I use Chrome and AdBlock as an extension. I don't see any ads on this forum, or pretty much anywhere else I browse.

Regarding how the ads are targeted, Google Ads (along with most of the other big players) are based on keywords the company purchasing the advertisements wants to target. For example, if I was selling dress shoes, I might choose to target not only the people the searched for the term "Dress Shoes", but also people that searched for "Dress Shirts", "Suits", "Shoe Repair", etc. Some advertisers are really after traffic on any kind they can get, so they'll market to very broad categories that are based on gender, location, etc.

If slightly risque ads are allowed on our computers or forum, then comes the ones showing increased nudity or worse. What one generation tolerates the next generation embraces. I, for one, don't want to embrace worse ads.
