3 sets of African-American brothers killed 7 people in Harrisburg, including sisters: police

"The man accused in the shooting deaths of two sisters in Harrisburg this month wasn't the first member of his family to face criminal homicide charges this year.

Two months ago, prosecutors charged the brother of Jeremiah Battle in connection with a robbery and homicide in Swatara Township.

And they aren't the only brothers who have been charged in unrelated killings in the Harrisburg area since last year.

Police and prosecutors identified three sets of brothers accused in six separate homicide investigations involving seven victims in Harrisburg since 2016.

And that's not counting brothers who were accused of committing a killing together.

Harrisburg police last week charged Battle, 22, with two counts of first-degree murder, burglary and tampering with evidence in connection with the shooting deaths of Kaliah Dearing, 16, and Natasha Harner, 24.

The sisters were shot to death inside their rented three-story home in the 2200 block of Logan Street. A third sister found their bodies on Nov. 9 in a second-floor bedroom

"Three black teenagers accused of mugging a man in the lobby of a Bronx apartment building for $10 mocked him before delivering a beatdown, cops said Saturday.
The crooks started harassing their victim at about 2:40 a.m. Tuesday at a Morris Houses building on E. 169th St. and Third Avenue in Morrisania, surveillance footage reveals.
The 56-year-old victim put up his fists and prepared to square off with one of his attackers, who dropped his hands and flashed a broad smile, video shows.
He pleaded for peace with another teen taunting him with mimicked martial arts, while the smirking crook circled in from behind to deliver a vicious right hook that dropped him to the floor.
One of the teens ran out of the lobby and returned with a buddy to keep beating the victim as he lay on the ground just off camera.
Moments later, an attacker in the doorway runs back to deliver a kick to the back of his head.
The terrifying trio then ran off with $10 from the man’s wallet, cops said.
The victim, is a resident of a nearby building in the Morris Houses.

The attackers are described as black, about 17 and 5-foot-6 to 5-foot-8."

SALEM, Ore . – A Mexican man who was deported from the United States more than a dozen times was sentenced Friday in Oregon to 35 years in prison after pleading guilty to sodomy, kidnapping, sex abuse and other charges in separate attacks on two women.
Sergio Jose Martinez told victims’ relatives he would see them in hell after the sentence was pronounced Friday in a Portland courtroom.
Just a day earlier, another man who had also been deported multiple times for being in America illegally, Jose Ines Garcia Zarate, was found not guilty by a jury in San Francisco in the shooting death of a woman. That case touched off a national immigration debate.
“Unfortunately, after Zarate got acquitted, Martinez is now the boogeyman of the face of immigration,” Martinez’s lawyer, Jonathan Sarre, said in a phone interview.
A week before the attacks, Martinez was freed from jail in Portland where he had served time for interfering with police and providing a false birth date. He was let go despite a request from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement for the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office to hold him so the agency could arrest him.
Oregon became America’s first sanctuary state when it adopted a law in 1987 preventing law enforcement from detaining people who are in the United States illegally but have not broken other laws.
Sheriff Michael Reese said he could not legally continue to hold Martinez on the federal agency’s “immigration detainer” request. Reese said that if ICE had sent a criminal detention warrant signed by a judge, he could have been held longer.
“He was released consistent with the orders of the court. No federal or state criminal warrants were present at the time he left our custody,” the sheriff said at the time while noting that Martinez had been deported before “and has returned to commit additional crimes.”
“It would help our community to understand how he was held accountable by federal authorities for multiple, illegal re-entries” Reese said.
U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions highlighted Martinez’s case when he visited Oregon in September and urged local jurisdictions that don’t cooperate with federal immigration agents to reconsider those policies.
Martinez attacked the two women in Portland on July 24, one in her home and the other in a parking garage.
Two relatives of one of the victims and one of the victims herself spoke during the sentencing phase Friday, in which Martinez often grinned. A brother of one victim told Martinez, “Sergio, no sentencing is enough . I rather you rot in hell,” KOIN TV news reported."

A shooting at Aztec High School in a small New Mexico town left two students and the suspect dead.

Aztec is a rural community of 6,500 people in the heart of northwestern New Mexico.

The school of about 900 students was cordoned off as authorities cleared the buildings and teens were taken to another location.

"With three weeks left in the year, Chicago has seen at least 636 homicides, trailing this time last year by 118 killings but still substantially above other recent years.
In 2015, the city had recorded 467 homicides by now, in 2014 at least 416, according to data kept by the Tribune.
This year is only the second time homicides have surpassed 600 since 2003, when the total was 601. Homicides dropped sharply the next year to 453, setting off a decade of yearly homicide totals that ranged from around 450 to 515 before they shot up dramatically to 792 last year.
The Chicago Police Department’s homicide count for this year is slightly lower than the Tribune’s at 620. But that figure does not include police-involved shootings, homicides that are considered justified or killings on expressways, which are investigated by the Illinois State Police.
The number of shootings has followed a similar pattern. There have been at least 3,429 people shot so far this year in Chicago, compared to 4,166 this time last year when violence reached levels not seen in two decades.
Shootings over weekends, when violence typically spikes, has been steadily declining the last few months. A total of 19 people were shot over between Friday and early Monday, five of them fatally.
–The first homicide happened Friday evening in the Back of the Yards neighborhood on the South Side, police said. Manuel Godinez, 34, was shot in the neck in the 4300 block of South Wood Street after someone fired from a minivan.
–Two men were killed in shootings within 20 hours Saturday and Sunday mornings in the Far South Side’s Fernwood neighborhood, according to police.
–In the weekend’s latest homicide, a 24-year-old died from a gunshot wound to the leg Sunday evening, police said. He was pronounced dead at Mount Sinai Hospital after the shooting in the 1300 block of South Komensky Avenue on the West Side.
–Among those shot was a 13-year-old boy who was wounded in a double shooting in the South Shore neighborhood Friday night. An 18-year-old man was also injured."

"Morgan Evenson was walking home in downtown Minneapolis on the evening of Dec. 13 when a black man got out of his car, chased her down, tackled her and repeatedly thrust a 3-4-inch blade into her flailing body.

The 26-year-old computer-store clerk frantically fought back, kicking, scratching and screaming for help.

At some point, neighbors heard her screams and came to her aid. Her attacker – described as a Somali man in his early 20s, about 5-foot-7 with a slight build and wearing grey stone-washed jeans – fled.

A bank teller has been charged in connection with a home invasion at the residence of a customer who'd made a large withdrawal of money, authorities in Maryland said.
A 78-year-old man told investigators he answered his door around 8:30 p.m. Monday and an unknown male forced his way inside. The intruder assaulted the man until a relative, a 57-year-old woman, intervened.
The suspect ran upstairs and the woman called police from a nearby home. When sheriff's deputies arrived, the intruder had fled and was not found during a neighbourhood search with the K-9 unit.
"As the investigation continued, it was determined one of the victims had removed a large amount of money from the bank Detectives gained information identifying a teller at the bank as the suspect."
Nathan Michael Newell, 19, of Bel Air, was arrested Wednesday at the bank, the sheriff's office said.
He has been charged with robbery, first- and third-degree burglary, first- and second-degree assault and home invasion. Newell was being held at the county detention center without bond. Both residents suffered injuries.
