Severe Storms Clobber Carolinas; Tens of Thousands Lose Power

Published: October 24, 2017
Authorities confirmed damage Monday evening and at least 75,000 homes and businesses remained without power Tuesday morning after a round of severe storms hit the Carolinas.

The National Weather Service confirmed an EF2 tornado was in progress in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, Monday afternoon. There were several other reports of tornadoes, and the NWS was surveying the damage Tuesday afternoon.

Spartanburg Regional Hospital told the Associated Press it treated eight people for minor storm-related injuries. There were no deaths associated with this round of storms, the report added.

(MORE: Severe Weather Threat Continues for East Coast)

People took to social media to post photos and videos of the widespread destruction left behind by the storms. Photos from Spartanburg, South Carolina, showed serious structural damage and flipped vehicles after a reported tornado.

Police in Spartanburg County reported one of the storms downed numerous trees and power lines, according to NWS. There were also reports of cars overturned at an intersection.

In Edneyville, North Carolina, fire and rescue officials advised residents to stay home due to flooded roadways and downed trees and power lines. Flooding was also reported in Asheville and Boone, according to the AP.

A mudslide in Henderson County forced officials to close Highway 65, according to WRAL.com, and at least two school districts announced the closure of schools on Tuesday due to the storms.

Damage from a possible tornado was also reported at Hickory Regional Airport in Hickory, North Carolina. Local officials declared a state of emergency in the town, as well as for all of Catawba County, to help with storm response, the AP reported.

Damage was also confirmed Monday

Scribbling for environmental, social and economic justice
Hundreds of Billions of Dollars in Damages, ‘Toasted, Roasted, and Grilled’ — That’s What Trump’s Refusal to Support the Paris Climate Agreement Gets Us
So far, in the past three months, we’ve had four major U.S. disasters whose impacts we can certainly say were made worse by human caused climate change.

The costs from these disasters to U.S. society and, in the end, to citizens and taxpayers is tremendous. Thousands of people have lost their homes. Irreplaceable lives were forever stripped from us. Many have lost access to work and livelihoods. And in the case of Puerto Rico, hundreds of thousands of people have been thrust back into what amounts to a modern rendition of the dark ages.

(A satellite image of the burn scar left following the North Bay fires. Human-caused climate change is a primary enabler for these kinds of disasters. Image source: NASA.)

As a measure of money alone and leaving aside the untold human misery, hurricane Harvey may ultimately cost the U.S. $180 billion, Irma may cost the U.S. $65 billion, and Maria may ultimately cost the U.S. as much as $100 billion. Adding in the $85 billion dollar damage estimate for the devastating California wildfires which were also made worse by climate change, and the total cost to U.S. society from these four disasters alone may top $430 billion.

Sitting at 1 to 1.2 C warming and staring down the barrel of 2-4 C or greater warming this Century, we can definitely say that these kinds of disasters are going to get worse. That we need to be both aware and prepared. And that we need to do our best to limit future damages to more manageable levels by working as hard as we can to reduce the climate disaster enabling greenhouse gas emissions. The world agreed to such limits at Paris. And yet it is a mark of consequential irrationality amounting to massive and indiscriminate inflicted harm that the Trump Administration has forced us to withdraw from this noble and moral compact.

A basic fact that hasn’t been lost on Christine Lagarde, chief of the International Monetary Fund, who wrote today in The Guardian that if the world fails to take steps to reduce climate change, we will be ‘toasted, roasted, and grilled.’ Lagarde warned of a dark, dystopian future if major nations fail in their moral responsibility to address climate change — citing the fact that the Trump Administration in the U.S. has withdrawn from the Paris Climate Summit. A global commitment to more rapidly reduce greenhouse gasses that Nicaragua recently joined leaving the U.S. only accompanied by Syria as inauspicious non-signatories.

A federal U.S. policy blind to the impacts of climate change under Trump is far from immune to its slings and arrows, as we’ve found so tragically this summer and fall. And underlying this fact is that an unaffiliated Government Accounting Office (GAO) report from Trump’s own government recently found that climate change related extreme weather and other related damages have topped $350 billion over the past decade. A number likely to significantly increase once recent events are also tallied. A number that will be dwarfed by future events if fossil fuel burning related carbon emissions continue to hit the atmosphere at their geologically unprecedented rate of more than ten billion tons each year.

The report took two years to compile at the bipartisan requests of Susan Collins of Maine (R) and Maria Cantwell of Washington (D). Ms Cantwell noted to the New York Times that the report is:

“basically telling us that this is costing us a lot of money...We need to understand that as stewards of the taxpayer that climate is a fiscal issue, and the fact that it’s having this big a fiscal impact on our federal budget needs to be dealt with.”

The report identified wide-ranging climate change related impacts coming from hurricanes, wildfires, sea level rise and damages to crops. Impacts that do not discriminate between political affiliation or level of income. However, it is notable that the U.S. Southeast, a traditional republican stronghold, is one of the regions the report identifies as likely to experience the some of the most severe and damaging impacts related to climate change.

Failure to provide significant national and international policy to address climate change, in Trump, is not only a failure to recognize basic scientific fact. It is not only putting the U.S. in a less competitive position economically with regards to renewables. And it is not only making the U.S. more vulnerable to the powerful storms and severe weather events such failures contribute to. It is also a dramatic failure of basic fiscal responsibility that will have an equally dramatic and long-last impact on deficits, budgets, taxes and ultimately incomes for years and decades to come.

Jim / October 26, 2017
Jean,

Thanks for the insightful comment. I suspect Ms Kleine is already onto the awful situation in PR.

Let’s contrast what happened in Florida with what’s happening in PR.

Florida knew it was going to be hit by a major hurricane and coordinated electricity recovery services with US and foreign suppliers – under an electrical utility mutual aid agreement – just as almost every major coastal city has done for decades. After the hurricane hit, the very next day, Florida had 20,000 people + equipment positioned to re-establish electrical service. As a result their electrical service was restored relatively quickly.

What happened in PR? No pre-establishment of mutual aid, as far as an ordinary citizen can find in the press, and an embrace of expensive thinly staffed private corporations. Quite different approaches, don’t you think?

Ms Kleine, where art thou?

Jim

Titania Baildon / October 25, 2017
These numbers bothered me the first time I read them yesterday.

The article says:
“A Government Accountability Office report released Monday said the federal government has spent more than $350 billion over the last decade on disaster assistance programs and losses from flood and crop insurance. That tally does not include the massive toll from this year’s three major hurricanes and wildfires, expected to be among the most costly in the nation’s history.

The report predicts these costs will only grow in the future, potentially reaching a budget busting $35 billion a year by 2050. The report says the federal government doesn’t effectively plan for these recurring costs, classifying the financial exposure from climate-related costs as “high risk.” ”

$350 billion divided by a decade says that we are ALREADY spending $35 billion per year, but they say it will ‘potentially’ reach that price by 2015. This year alone Robert shows it may top $430 billion, and I am sure that doesn’t include all of the secondary items like lost productivity, etc.

I think this is yet another ‘faster and worse than expected’ scenario.

Titania Baildon / October 25, 2017
Will ‘potentially’ reach that price by 2050, not 2015.

robertscribbler / October 26, 2017
I think the tendency is definitely to under-report and under-forecast these figures. We’re already at 35 billion a year if you use basic math. GAO might have gotten some of its communications mixed up in editing. We have no reason to expect that the scale of disasters will level off. They will tend to worsen so long as more carbon keeps hitting the atmosphere.

This report, despite its flaws, is still useful as a baseline communication. And we should encourage the government to regularly produce reports of this kind and to further refine them.

miles h / October 25, 2017
insurance companies and gvt’s can’t sustain these losses year on year.
it makes you wonder where the financial side of things is going to end up, and how long it will take to get there.
clearly, losses in the US alone at nearly a trillion dollars in just one year is not a viable economic prospect when it happens much more frequently. and that cost is coupled to the losses of productivity in the affected areas. this year, the value of a whole load of californian wines, tourism, recreation is up in smoke.

(i don’t want to make climate change consequences all about money – extinctions and habitat loss bother me more)

robertscribbler / October 25, 2017
I feel the same. But some people only listen with their pocketbooks.

Worth noting that US GDP is 18.6 Trillion and that U.S. federal budget is 3.8 trillion. 400 billion from storms is more than 10 percent of the federal budget and about 2 percent of the total U.S. economy. It basically eats up most of the growth this year.

Suzanne / October 25, 2017
Down here in S. FL it is the negative economic factors caused by the effects of CC that is already motivating business and government to take action. For instance, there are already rumblings that banks won’t be giving 30 year mortgages to coastal properties. And getting insurance, may become even more expensive, or eventually impossible without more drastic action. We are definitely on the front lines down here..which is why it is so infuriating to have a Governor (soon to be running against our Democrat Senator Bill Nelson in 2018..grr) who is such a CC Denier..

Thank you for the hat tip,Robert. Also, thank you for replying to my question about EVP. I responded to your reply.

Came across this today. A new, pretty long Chris Hedges interview with James Hansen..

(Link taken down by moderator. RT is a Russia soft power media outlet that often aims to harmfully manipulate the U.S. political process. This is not a statement on the value of Chris Hedges and James Hansen’s communications. However, such voices should do their homework and consider how their communications might be used or misused in the future.)

robertscribbler / October 25, 2017
So with regards to hurricanes, we have had a statistical increase in the number of the strongest storms — such as Cat 5s, for example. Climate change tends to increase the peak intensity of the strongest storms. Worth noting that climate change also enhances the rainfall potential of the most extreme hurricanes over land. In addition, we can and should say that climate change does contribute to the intensity of extreme events. Hansen’s communication stating ‘we can’t prove a single storm was caused by climate change’ comes with a qualification now that attribution studies are beginning to identify percentage influences of climate change to certain events.

Would be a bit careful with RT — Russia based media source. This particular broadcast appears to be relatively solid, though I’m a bit concerned about some of the political messaging (More generating false hopes of some virtuous third party. I think working on the present parties and getting them moving in the right direction is probably more hopeful.). So mostly a decent job by Chris Hedges on this.

Also worth noting that I find Hansen’s criticism of democrats to be short-sighted and somewhat unfair. We, as democrats, have long given Hansen a platform and supported his communications and proposed policies while republicans have fought to block them.

Would be wary of anyone making promises of salvation coming from a third party. Often far more divisive than helpful. Hansen oddly seems to favor the very conservatism that has tended to enable the problems we see now. His mind-set is libertarian. This is ironic since he proposes a major government-based re-ordering of the monetary system. He also appears to have naive views regarding blanket statements about social programs. We’ve lost many of them and we’re in danger of cutting through bone when it comes to Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security. I kind of find it odd that he mentions these when talking about climate change.

All this said, we should be very clear that Hansen is absolutely right about many things when it comes to climate and that his legal initiatives RE climate change have been very helpful and positive as have his proposed policy solutions (with the exception of an over-reliance on nuclear). His carbon price arrangement would be very beneficial if enacted as he envisions it. Unfortunately, there are a lot off good policies out there that are very tough to put through the present government these days due to polarization. But part of that is due to the fact that proponents of policies often idealize them and are unwilling to compromise on various details.

Have to step out. Will get back to the EVP statement ASAP.

John McCormick / October 26, 2017

Taking this link down. Traffic fed into RT has lived longer than is comfortable for me. I would ask in the future that links to RT not be supported on this site regardless of the apparent innocuous nature of content coming from that source. If you wish to post an RT link or picture, please first ask.

X miller / October 26, 2017
I know that with RT- Russia Today- one must be wary of the source. But isn’t it odd that they are far more informative about climate change than the appalling Fox News, which would never have a one on one interview with Hansen but is always ready to have climate change deniers like Morano or Watts on any day of the week to perversely talk about “ethics questions” concerning climate scientists, when they themselves exhibit no evidence of having any ethics whatsoever.

Jim / October 26, 2017
+1

robertscribbler / October 26, 2017
There’s a tendency on the part of RT to drop wedge issues into left-wing and climate media. The third party focus of many of these communications is unlikely to be wholly accidental. I find this tendency for subversiveness to be more than a little disturbing.

To be clear, RT is a soft-power tool used by the Kremlin to shape global perception:

http://archives.cjr.org/feature/what_is ... _today.php

The tendency of RT has been to undermine western institutions. So we should not at all be surprised at the proliferation of wedge issues under seemingly innocuous and even helpful subject matter. At least from the point of view of RT, Hedges and Hansen must be seen as somewhat divisive. Otherwise, I doubt they would support this communication. This is not to say that Hansen and Hedges views aren’t valid (at least in a given context). But we should consider how those opinions could be weaponized against the U.S. political system going forward.

Soft power isn’t about lying so much as it is about characterizing the truth in such a way that it supports an agenda. Fox News is an entirely different beast. We could well describe it as a media hard power.

My policy is to block communications coming from RT due to its subversive nature. Apparently, RT has found a way to nose into the tent, as it were, by supporting the voices of celebrated climate activists. I will continue to take down future communications by RT regardless of apparent innocuous content in the future. This particular communication is worthwhile as a learning point and as a means to discuss the harmful nature of wedge issues in the present U.S. political dialogue.

We should be very clear whom the Russians attacked in the last election and why. Russia attacked the Hillary Clinton campaign primarily due to pledges on her part to continue to sanction Russian oil and gas oligarchs, to continue to push for a rapid energy transition in the west, and to continue to attempt to contain Russia’s aggressive actions in Europe. Russia has an inherent problem with the democratic party platform in that its fossil fuel based economic interests take a hit the more rapidly and systemically the west addresses climate change. Though a signatory of the Paris Climate Agreement, Russia’s movements toward energy transition could best be described as laughable. RT, during the election, was an outlet for soft power attacks against democrats through the mechanism of supporting third party candidates. RT is also more likely to support ‘doomer’ type views or other forms of soft climate change denial.

An analysis of social media supports for this blog finds that some of my communications have been manipulated by sources associated with Russia media campaigns. This is a deep concern for me. I do not want rational concern about worst case climate scenarios to be misused.

“billions in damages” The first village in the US to be moved due to global warming impacts will cost an estimated $180 million for around 600 people.

The US alone has 1,400 cities threatened by sea level rise.

From a recent paper: “These systematic and common terraces are interpreted to record punctuated sea-level rise events over timescales of decades to centuries during the last deglaciation” https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-017-00966-x

“Punctuated sea-level rise events” is a phrase worth chewing over.

Sea level rise, being very non-linear, can be lulling. At somewhere a little above 4mm per year now (up from 0.8mm per year in the 19th century), that’s a little over a third of a meter in a century, if it continued at that rate.

Here’s a graph of post glacial sea level rise, showing both how stable the ice sheets have been for 6000 years and what they can do when they “let go”. During Meltwater Pulse 1A sea level rose 4m per century for 4 centuries. There were larger ice sheets then, but that rate indicates that the ice sheets can do dramatic things when they retreat. http://vademecum.brandenberger.eu/grafi ... _level.png

And as the glaciologist Richard Alley noted (see talk below), ice sheet mass loss happens in spurts. As one section of an ice sheet loses its grip on land it slips. So although we know that multi-meter sea level rise is possible in a single century, it’s likely that some decades saw more rise than others.

Think of ice sheet retreat as a retreating army, moving quickly from one hilltop to the next and then pausing.

The 120km wide Thwaites Glacier in West Antarctica can drain 3.3m of sea level rise equivalent of ice which is holding on to an undersea ledge by its fingernails and debris evidence indicates that in the past a section of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet lost its grip on land and slid quickly into the ocean.

When you look at the graph of post glacial sea level rise, think about how we are now warming more than 10 times as fast as when coming out of previous glaciations.

Here’s a Finnish container ship fitted with a small experimental version of Rotor sails. According to its operators, the sails are preventing more than a thousand tonnes of CO2 emissions per year, whilst saving the company US$400 per day in reduced fuel costs.

Maersk is set to begin trials of a much larger version in early 2018.

robertscribbler / October 26, 2017
A positive development. Worth noting that rotor sails have been around since at least the 1980s. So this is a tech that we could have deployed on a mass scale long ago.

Climate Reanalyzer hourly forecast maps, using the Global 7-day GFS temperature anomaly layer are showing the buildup of heat along the west coast (initially all the way from Baja into northern Alaska) and the development of a deep trough of cold air in the center of the country. Using the wind speed at 250 hPa, one can see the jet stream pushing into the Arctic, driving heat into the Arctic. The temperature anomaly above baseline for the Arctic region (1979-2000 average, not preindustrial) at the end of the 7 day period is 5 degrees centigrade. I would expect that this will impact the sea ice growth and it makes me wonder how long before we experience a blue ocean event.

Also note how the jet stream is looking disjointed.

Suzanne, thanks for the video of the interview of Chris Hedges with James Hansen. Chris Hedges was in one of his more positive moods – he can be very grim and he is extremely critical of the political elites – especially of the Democrats. I don’t think James Hansen was critical of social programs (per Robert’s comments) – he was just saying that the general population needs to benefit directly from any kind of tax on fossil fuel industries – looking to build that necessary political consensus.

However, James Hansen does focus on the harm to our children – I think the harm is present now and growing – and somewhat unpredictable. The impacts are exponential. One wonders if Mr. Short-term-human-extinction (Guy M) is right, although I would rather listen to Peter Wadhams.

I am grateful for any portal which will host James Hansen – so thanks to RT for that – given the horrendous disservice our mainstream media does when it does not report on climate disruption involvement with the various disasters that have come forward in the past few months.

Thanks again Robert for your work on this blog.

robertscribbler / October 26, 2017
RT link taken down. Please see comments above.

I’ve consistently promoted Hansen from this blog and I think that Hedges communication was helpful. However, I don’t see how supporting a known soft media power arm of the Kremlin is helpful at this time. We can thank RT for some of the mess we saw in the last election. For my own part, not going to support that nonsense.

Hedges and Hansen need to find another outlet. They are certainly capable of that.

RE Hansen’s comments on social programs — the American people directly benefit from those. That said, I agree with Hansen’s sentiment that his particular proposal is most effective as a direct dividend that is transparent to the American people as a benefit. He could, however, have made that statement without generating a false equivalency between democrats and republicans. The former is certainly more helpful than the latter. And democrats have absolutely fought to help Hansen, which he seems to ignore.

Guy McPherson is a peddler of harmful communication on scale equivalent to those who peddle the chemtrails theory. Anyone taking his views seriously is pandering to a very harmful dialectic. Asserting the notion of inevitable human extinction injected into the present situation without focusing on solutions is tantamount to encouraging people to commit suicide. In other words, there is a responsible way to talk about the worst case scenario and Guy McPherson does the exact opposite — attempting to spread and profit from despair.

If you want to see an example of a responsible communication on the issue of worst case climate scenarios please see the recent NY Mag article on future heatwaves. Though not perfect in content, the article was followed up by supports for the necessary renewable energy transition that will prevent the worst case outcomes.

Apparently there is a pathogen that causes a disease called Sudden Oak Death (SOD) that might have had an impact on the California wine country fires.

http://www.pressdemocrat.com/news/62018 ... artslide=0

Sudden oak death in Sonoma County explodes, thanks to winter rains

“GUY KOVNER
THE PRESS DEMOCRAT | October 18, 2016

The North Coast’s wet spring was a widespread boon to living things, including the insidious pathogen that has killed more than 3 million trees in the past two decades, and another rainy season could spell doom to many more of the region’s treasured oak trees.

Four years of drought had slowed the spread of sudden oak death in Sonoma and 14 other counties from Humboldt south to Monterey, but the same rainfall that pumped up reservoirs and turned hillsides green this year also triggered a rebound in the spread of the disease that surprised the experts.”

So, this is a pathogen that can kill several varieties of oak trees in about 2 years, and generally does – it’s something like 90% lethal. Once the oak trees are dead, they add to the fire danger.

The California drought killed about 100 million trees in California, is what I read. This pathogen has killed 3 million trees in the past two decades from SOD, and was quite common in Sonoma County.

“In Sonoma County north of Santa Rosa, the infection rate nearly tripled, to 4.4 percent this year up from 1.5 percent in 2015. The infection rate east of Highway 101, from Santa Rosa south, nearly doubled, from 3.8 percent last year to 7.4 percent this year, while the rate west of the freeway held virtually steady at 12.5 percent.”

Several percent of the oak trees involved in these fires may have been dead or dying from Sudden Oak Death.

Is this SOD increase climate change related? It was certainly made worse in 2016 -2017 by the drought / deluge cycle, it seems. Were drought weakened trees especially vulnerable, after being paradoxically protected from the spread of the disease by the drought?

Bill Goedecke / October 26, 2017
Thanks Robert for the response. Absolutely, I think the Republicans are horrible, to say the least, and we would be so much better off with Clinton as president that this current disaster. I promoted Clinton to friends who particularly disliked her before the election, specifically in response to climate issues. And I adamantly opposed Trump, for whatever that is worth (I did not change my friends’ minds, however!).

I don’t read Guy M – I was just saying that the situation is looking dire and preceding rapidly. Excuse me for the hyperbolic reference to him. I guess I agree with you – and would rather listen to and read Peter Wadhams.

Bill

Fair enough.

I understood what you said. But I’ve got to say that sitting in my chair it seems that I’ve been targeted by GM and his supporters. It’s a sore spot for me because I feel he’s mischaracterized my work and used it to support a very harmful world view. Soft climate change denial in the form of doomerism is a very harmful response. The source of that particular way of thinking appears to be GM.

As human beings we have a tendency to fixate on singular thought objects. This vulnerability for distraction can short circuit our ability to discern actual reality as is and to act to solve problems. Characterizing the future as an inevitable extreme — such as inevitable human extinction — is an example of using a shiny object (in this case dark object) in an attempt to strong arm the narrative and people’s responses.

At this time, it is imperative that everyone act in as effective a manner as possible to prevent the kinds of worst case scenarios that GM falsely claims are inevitable. In understanding this, we should also understand the end goal of climate change denial — to block responsible climate action by any means necessary.

Sandy-Like Situation Developing? Tropical System to Merge With Potentially Record-Breaking Nor’Easter by Sunday.
by robertscribbler
It's not yet predicted to be a so-called perfect storm. But a Sandy-like situation appears to be on tap for the U.S. Northeast this weekend. For the forecast weather coming down the pipe bears a distinctly odd combination of features similar to the climate change related hybrid hyperstorms we've seen during recent years. To be clear, the presently predicted hybrid storm is not expected to be as intensely 'perfect' as Sandy. But it could still be a record-breaker for parts of the Northeast with regards to October rainfall and minimum central pressure come Sunday.

A Tropical Storm Predicted to Combine with a Nor'Easter

93 L isn't even a tropical depression yet. But this stormy collection of clouds southeast of the Yucatan continues to gather and organize over warmer than normal waters. At this time, development into a tropical system appears more likely -- with the National Hurricane Center predicting a 60 percent chance of storm development over the next 24 hours.

(93 L becomes more organized Southeast of the Yucatan on Friday. Image source: The National Hurricane Center.)

To the north, a very deep trough is poised to plunge down over the Eastern Seaboard of the United States. Another one of those high amplitude Jet Stream waves born of conditions related to a warming Arctic. And all across the storm's projected path sea surface temperatures range between 1 and 4 degrees Celsius above the climatologist average.

By Sunday, 93 L is predicted to be funneling into the southern section of this trough just east of Florida. Present model runs show the tropical storm transferring its tropical energy northward into a low the Arctic-originating frontal system over these warmer than normal waters -- with potentially extreme results.

(Northern New England doesn't have a record of a storm with pressures lower than 980 mb during late October. The present storm could intensify to pressures lower than 980 mb as it crosses over this region late Sunday -- setting a new record. Image source: Tropical Tidbits.)

Forecasts are presently calling for one day rainfall amounts that could break records for New England. A swath from New Jersey through Eastern New York and western Maine could see between 2 and 8 inches of rainfall in a very short period. Meanwhile, atmospheric pressures could drop to near or below 980 mb -- a measure below 980 would be a new record for Southern New England in October (Sandy hit lower pressures during its Oct 29 New York landfall in 2012).

This is a climate change related movie that we've seen before. One that is, thankfully, predicted to be a bit less intense than Sandy this time. That said, those along the U.S. East Coast should keep a keen weather eye out as Arctic air moves over these warmer than normal waters and wraps in an energetic tropical system when the trough plunges south. Moist tropical air colliding with this Arctic mass over these warm, wet waters will create the potential to generate a powerful temperature and moisture dipole in a lifting atmosphere that could well cause this predicted storm to swiftly explode to record-shattering intensity.

54 Fahrenheit Above Average: Extreme Warming Event For Greenland, Baffin Bay Underway
At the mouth of Baffin Bay just off the West Coast of Greenland today hurricane force wind gusts are blowing in from the south.

This roaring invasion of warm air originates from the Central Atlantic along a latitude line south of the Azores. It climbs hundreds of miles north to where it is intensified between a grinding 975 mb low off Labrador and a massive 1042 mb high squatting over Central Greenland. Temperatures in this warm air mass range from near 50 degrees (F) over Southwestern Greenland to around 40 degrees (F) over the mouth of Baffin Bay. Or between 9 and 36 degrees (F) above normal for this time of year.

(Hurricane force wind gusts are driving a wedge of above freezing air into Baffin Bay and over Western Greenland at a time when these regions should be seeing well below freezing conditions. Image source: Earth Nullschool.)

This warm wind driven air mass is expected to move north over the next 24 to 48 hours. It will steadily blanket both glaciers and areas typically covered with sea ice. And as it does so, it will push temperatures above freezing for large sections of both Baffin Bay and Western Greenland with above 32 F readings progressing as far as the Petermann Glacier.

What this means is that temperatures will likely hit record ranges of up to 54 degrees Fahrenheit above average in some locations near the far northern extent of this expected warm air invasion. Overall, Greenland itself is expected to see 15 degree (F) above average readings for the entire island. This will generate brief surface melt conditions for parts of Greenland during late November.

(Large region of 20 to 30 C, or 36 to 54 F, above average temperatures is predicted to blanket Greenland and the Canadian Archipelago after moving north through Baffin Bay over the next two days. Image source: Global and Regional Climate Anomalies.)

Strong warm air invasions of the Arctic at this time of year are a signal coming from human-forced climate change. As the northern pole darkens with winter, a global warming related phenomena called polar amplification ramps up. In addition, during recent years, we’ve seen warm air slots tend to develop beneath strong ridging features in the upper level Jet Stream. This year, the warm air slots have tended to form over the Bering Sea along the Pacific side of the Arctic and progress northward into the Chukchi. This has resulted in a large zone of ice free waters for a typically frozen region between Alaska and Siberia as warm winds and storm force waves have continuously beat the ice back.

The present warm air invasion for Greenland may be a signal that a similar warm air slot is attempting to develop over Baffin Bay going forward. Or it may be a fluke in the overall pattern. Watch this space.

Justice: Late, But Not Too Late

Larry Nassar, former doctor to young female athletes, will spend the rest of his life in prison. As she sentenced him to 40 to 175 years in jail, Judge Rosemarie Aquilina said, “I just signed your death warrant.”

Nassar may have been the most successful serial abuser of young women in history. Judge Aquilina invited 156 women to testify in her courtroom about their assault by the hands of Nassar, beginning in 1992, 25 years ago. Over and over, he penetrated their vaginas with his fingers or his fist as part of his “therapy”. Some were younger than 10.

Nassar earned his medical degree from Michigan State University and worked there as a sports doctor. He became famous as the doctor for USA Gymnastics for nearly 20 years, which is in charge of the Olympic gymnastics team. His life of crime began to unravel when Nassar was first publicly accused in September 2016 by former gymnast Rachael Denhollander. But his sexual abuse had been reported to authorities many times long before that.

In 1997, Larissa Boyce reported what Nassar was doing to the MSU women’s gymnastics coach, Kathie Klages, and another girl confirmed that she too had been “treated”. Both girls were shamed into silence. A women’s track coach was told in 1999. Athletic trainers were told in 2000. In 2004, clinical psychologist Dr. Gary Stollak was told. That same year, Brianne Randall, 17 years old, told the police in Meridian Township, near the Michigan State campus, that Nassar had touched her vagina and breasts. The police never told MSU.

MSU President Lou Anna Simon was told in 2014 that a police report had been filed against a sports doctor. She let her subordinates handle it and never saw the report. The subordinates included 3 other MSU doctors and the athletic trainer, as well as Dr. William Strampel, dean of the College of Osteopathic Medicine, who decided Nassar’s actions were medically appropriate. At least 14 MSU employees were told about Nassar’s actions.

USA Gymnastics paid star gymnast McKayla Maroney over $1 million to keep quiet about Nassar’s abuse. The agreement included a $100,000 fine if she revealed what Nassar had done to her.

The only thing that stopped Nassar’s abuse was the public accusation by Rachael Denhollander last September. She was motivated by a story the month before in the “Indy Star” that USA Gymnastics had a long history of ignoring reports of sexual abuse by coaches.

How do serial abusers manage to continue their criminal activity? One reason is that making such accusations is deeply painful. It is difficult for a teenager to complain about the nature of their treatment by a doctor, especially if he is advertised as a “miracle worker”. At a preliminary hearing, Shannon Smith, one of Nassar’s attorneys, asked Denhollander if she was coming forward for the money. Denhollander explained some of the cost of telling the truth. “My advocacy for sexual assault victims, something I cherished, cost me my church and our closest friends three weeks before I filed my police report. I was left alone and isolated.”

The institutions who protect abusers circle the wagons against accusers. The vice chair of Michigan State’s board of trustees, Joel Ferguson, called victims’ lawyers “folks chasing ambulances” looking for a “payday”. A famous former prosecutor, Patrick Fitzgerald, was hired to by MSU investigate, and President Lou Anna Simon claimed in April that MSU was conducting a “thorough internal review”. In December, Fitzgerald exonerated the University by writing that nobody there knew what Nassar was doing. It turns out that Fitzgerald had been hired to defend the University against lawsuits. His team interviewed none of Nassar’s victims.

The lifelong sexual abusers who have made news were all protected by a cone of silence. Penn State administrators looked the other way when they heard about Jerry Sandusky’s abuse of boys. Reporting about Harvey Weinstein detailed the many people in Hollywood who knew about him and did nothing. Now a scandal has erupted in Germany about the star TV director Dieter Wedel, who was allowed to continue his predatory behavior by state-funded television channel Saarlaendischer Rundfunk, which knew about his abuse in the 1980s.

Denhollander wrote, “The first step toward changing the culture that led to this atrocity is to hold enablers of abuse accountable.” In Nassar’s case, the enablers are renowned institutions.

Some Americans apparently feel that men are under attack. I disagree – men who abuse women are under attack and it’s about time. But there may be a backlash from defenders of the male-dominated status quo, the patriarchal assumptions which allowed unpunished abuse to be so widespread. Trump was put into office because many white men and women feared that a world was crumbling where white male sexual dominance was a fundamental assumption. They didn’t care that he abused women and bragged about it; in fact, many supported him because he so openly violated new standards of correct behavior.

Eventually he too will get what he deserves.

Monday brought a second day of record-setting temperatures across Southern California as a January heat wave made winter feel a lot more like summer.
Numerous spots around the region hit new highs for the day, including Long Beach (91), LAX (89) UCLA (89), Santa Ana (88), Newport Beach (85), and Vista (90). Lake Forest was the hottest spot in the U.S. at 93 degrees.
More record heat is expected Tuesday.
Powerful winds continued Monday, including gusts that topped 50 mph in some canyon and peak areas.
The conditions sparked a small brush fire in Malibu.

The temperature in Siberia rose more than 100 degrees in two weeks

As an antidote to the report of minus-88 degree weather in the Siberian outpost of Oymyakon earlier this month, we give you this: The temperature in a settlement just to its east was an astonishing 126 degrees warmer two weeks later.

The mercury in Omolon, Russia, reached its highest January temperature ever recorded Monday: a relatively toasty 38.4 degrees.

38 degrees doesn’t exactly sound like a day at the beach, but consider that it’s 64 degrees warmer than Omolon’s average high of minus-26 at this time of year.

Omolon is 540 miles east of Oymyakon, which was described as so cold “eyelashes freeze, frostbite is a constant danger, and cars are usually kept running even when not being used.”

In Oymyakon, the forecast high Tuesday was 17 degrees, not quite as balmy as Omolon, but still about 60 degrees warmer than its average high around minus-40, and 105 degrees warmer than it was two weeks ago.

Oymyakon has the reputation as being the coldest permanently occupied human settlement in the world.

Grievance filed over firing of deputy amid sexual assault charges

| Jan 30, 2018
WISCASSET — A grievance was filed last week on behalf of former Lincoln County Sheriff's Deputy Kenneth Hatch III over his firing earlier this month.
The grievance was filed Jan. 23 with Sheriff Todd Brackett by the National Fraternal Order of Police, which represents the deputies in Lincoln County.
Mike Edes, a labor specialist for the association, said late Tuesday that he expects the grievance will be withdrawn in light of Hatch's plea last week.
Hatch was convicted Jan. 26 on a single charge of providing a place for minors to consume alcohol, a Class D offense, for which the Whitefield man got no jail time.
Hatch pleaded no contest to the misdemeanor count and was fined $1,000. A no- contest plea results in a conviction, but does not require the defendant to admit guilt.
Hatch was fired by the sheriff Jan. 9, following a lengthy internal investigation. Hatch had been on unpaid leave from the Sheriff’s Office since he was charged in June 2016.
Hatch had originally been charged with 22 felonies -- 11 counts of sexual abuse of a minor, three counts of unlawful sexual contact, and eight counts of aggravated furnishing of marijuana. He was accused of sexually assaulting three girls and providing them marijuana and alcohol in exchange for sex.
A jury in Kennebec County found Hatch not guilty Nov. 20 on one count of sexual abuse of a minor and one count of aggravated furnishing of marijuana. But the jury deadlocked on the other 20 charges.
At that trial, the prosecution said Hatch was a decorated officer by day, but at night was a different person, a man who preyed on girls for his own sexual gratification. Testimony during the trial stated that the sexual assaults occurred in his cruiser, his home, and once in a cubicle at the Sheriff's Office. One victim was 6 years old when the assaults began, the prosecutor said.

William Francis Pepper is a barrister in the United Kingdom and admitted to the bar in numerous jurisdictions in the United States of America. His primary work is international commercial law. He has represented governments in the Middle East, Africa, South America, and Asia. Today, Pepper represents Sirhan Sirhan, the gunman convicted in the assassination of Senator Robert F. Kennedy in June 1968.

Bill Pepper was a friend of Martin Luther King in the last year of his life. Some years after King's death, Bill Pepper went on to represent James Earl Ray in his guilty plea, and subsequent conviction. Pepper believes that Ray was framed by the federal government and that King was killed by a conspiracy that involved the FBI, the CIA, the military, the Memphis police and organized crime figures from New Orleans and Memphis. He later represented James Earl Ray in a televised mock trial in an attempt to get Ray the trial that he never had.

He then represented the King family in a wrongful death civil trial, King family vs. Loyd Jowers and "other unknown co-conspirators." During a trial that lasted four weeks Bill produced over seventy witnesses. Jowers, testifying by deposition, stated that James Earl Ray was a scapegoat, and not involved in the assassination. Jowers testified that Memphis police officer Earl Clark fired the fatal shots. On December 8, 1999, the Memphis jury found Jowers responsible and found that the assassination plot included also "governmental agencies." The jury took less than an hour to find in favor of the King family for the requested sum of $1.00

William Pepper is heavily involved in Human Rights Law, for a time convening the International Human Rights Seminar at Oxford University, during which time individuals such as Hugo Chavez, the President of Venezuela, accepted invitations to address the seminar. He lives in the US currently -not primarily- but travels frequently to England.

Newark cop 'blacked out' when he saw man in estranged wife's room. Then he started shooting

Seventh Paterson police officer charged

Frank Toledo, 30, of Paterson, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to violate people’s civil rights, using excessive force, and filing a false police report before judge Katharine S. Hayden at the Newark federal courthouse on Tuesday morning.
Toledo worked with other rogue police officers – including Eudy Ramos, Jonathan Bustios, Daniel Pent, Matthew Torres – to stop and search cars without justification. They would steal cash and other valuables from the occupants of the vehicles and share it amongst themselves.

Authorities said Toledo and other officers also stopped and searched people on the streets and took their money.
The rogue police officers would file false police reports to cover up their criminal activities. For example, on Dec. 2, 2017, Toledo and Ramos stopped and arrested a person in Paterson and took $1,000 in cash. Both men split the cash and filed a false police report omitting that $1,000 was taken from the arrestee.
Toledo and the other officers coordinated their activities through text messages. In one text message, Nov. 6, 2017, Bustios wrote to Toledo, “Yo what the f— are you doing? I’m tryin’ to go mango hunting. Let’s goooo!” Mango is a code word for cash.
“Lafayette and e  18,” responded Toledo. “Meet me here.”
In another text message, Nov. 16, 2017, Toledo wrote to Bustios, “everything we do is illegal.”
Toledo also routinely used excessive

Water splitting advance holds promise for affordable renewable energy
Date:
March 9, 2020
Source:
Washington State University
Summary:
A team has developed a less expensive water electrolysis system that works under alkaline conditions but still produces hydrogen at comparable rates to the currently used system that works under acidic conditions and requires precious metals. This advance brings down the cost of water splitting technology, offering a more viable way to store energy from solar and wind power in the form of hydrogen fuel.

What if it (only) takes a new worldview to free ourselves from the new normal?

Today I told another patient that in fact, there was no need to be so worried about the pandemic.  Used early, hydroxychloroquine worked very effectively as a treatment.

And again the first thing I heard was, "Isn't that the drug Trump talked about?"

Why does what Trump said seem more germane to people than the SARS-CoV-2 virus being treatable?

I now have a retort:  "Even a stopped watch is right twice a day!"

But that is not really the point.  What remains shocking to me is that people have been so conditioned to fear the virus, that it is not even within the realm of possibility that we can see the light at the end of the tunnel.  Nor, to take an even greater leap of consciousness, are some people able to consider that, maybe, there didn't have to be a tunnel.  We have all been holed up in an imaginary tunnel, immobilized by fear and then by laws.

For six months, many people have known that certain drugs were very effective against SARS-CoV-2, but somehow that information has not been allowed to trickle down.

If I ask someone to believe that there is a cheap, safe, available pill that you can get in a drugstore, which could immediately end the lockdowns, masks, and the rotten new normal, I am asking them to give up believing in the world as they know it, and enter the Twilight Zone.

I am starting to think that is considerably harder for many people to entertain a new worldview, than it is to accept the very rotten new normal.

Secret Service Spends $1.1M at President Trump’s Properties, Including Hotel That Was Closed

The Secret Service has dished out $1.1 million to stay at President Trump’s properties since he took office, The Washington Post reports.
The Secret Service was even charged $21,800 to rent a cottage and other rooms for staying at Trump’s Bedminster, N.J., club while it was closed due to the coronavirus pandemic. It wasn’t clear why the Secret Service was there, but Trump’s daughter Ivanka Trump is believed to have stayed there at least once to celebrate Passover with her family.

Celerino Castillo (born 1949) is a former agent for the United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).[1]

Early life and military service

Castillo was a detective sergeant with a Texas Police Department from 1974 until 1979, and graduated from the University of Texas–Pan American in 1976 with a BS in Criminal Justice.

He served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War.

Drug Enforcement Administration

While in Vietnam, Castillo had witnessed first-hand the effects of drug abuse on his soldiers. In 1979, he joined the DEA as an enforcement agent in America's "War on Drugs", specializing in undercover investigation and acting as a foreign diplomat for six years in South and Central America. He is best known for blowing the whistle on the CIA-backed arms-for-drugs trade used to prop up the 1980s Contra counter-insurgency in Nicaragua, and for the book that he wrote on that subject, entitled Powder Burns: Cocaine, Contras and the Drug War and released in 1994, two years after he had left the DEA.

After leaving the DEA Castillo worked as a private investigator, and also worked to promote his book, appearing on television and lecturing at various universities on the drug war and US foreign policy in Latin America. Since 1997 he has been accepted as an expert witness in federal courts on Outrageous Government Conduct, Informants, and Racial Profiling.

In 2008 (three years before Operation Fast and Furious became publicly known) Castillo told reporter Bill Conroy that agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) agents were participating in the smuggling of high powered weapons into Mexico. According to Castillo the source of that information was a government informer who was later murdered

Gary Stephen Webb (August 31, 1955 – December 10, 2004) was an American investigative journalist.

Gary Stephen Webb
August 31, 1955
Corona, California,
He began his career working for newspapers in Kentucky and Ohio, winning numerous awards, and building a strong reputation for investigative writing. Hired by the San Jose Mercury News, Webb contributed to the paper's Pulitzer Prize-winning coverage of the Loma Prieta earthquake.

Webb is best known for his "Dark Alliance" series, which appeared in The Mercury News in 1996. The series examined the origins of the crack cocaine trade in Los Angeles and claimed that members of the anti-communist Contra rebels in Nicaragua had played a major role in creating the trade, using cocaine profits to support their struggle. It also suggested that the Contras may have acted with the knowledge and protection of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). The series provoked outrage, particularly in the Los Angeles African-American community, and led to four major investigations of its charges.

First country bans ivermectin, a lifesaver for Covid--will the US be next?

Ivermectin, a cheap generic drug used for hookworm, heartworm and scabies, with a half life causing it to remain in your system for months, is used as a "worming" medicine in children, dogs, horses.
Serendipitously, it was found to be extremely effective in Covid, for both prevention and treatment.  It is even effective at a late stage of illness, unlike hydroxychloroquine.  The drug seems to work against SARS-CoV-2 even better than hydroxychloroquine and other antimalarials.  Unlike the chloroquine drugs, its efficacy was only established during the past several months.  Many studies now prove its value in Covid-19.
Ivermectin's routine use in places like Africa probably contributed to African's extraordinary resistance to Covid-19, which has rates of death a small fraction what they are in the US. Most African countries have reported death rates from Covid-19 between 1% and 10% that of the US.
A US Senate hearing led by Senator Ron Johnson on December 8 called as witnesses doctors who were using the drug, who discussed its use and extreme benefit in the Covid epidemic.
That appears to have initiated a firestorm of fake news about how the drug is dangerous, unproven, and should not be used for Covid.  The Associated Press led the way, employing journalist Beatrice Dupuy, who specializes in debunking Covid misinformation, and who previously wrote for Teen Vogue. AP also used Facebook's opaque "fact checking" system.  Then other media outlets followed.
On Christmas eve, 16 days after the Senate hearing that gave ivermectin its first broad publicity, the government of South Africa banned its use and importation as a treatment for Covid.  No specific safety issue was cited as the reason.  There is no specific safety issue; the drug is extremely safe, although a large burden of dead worms can sometimes sicken a patient.
The chloroquine drugs are also very effective treatments for early Covid, but their use for this purpose has been obfuscated, banned, and interfered with using a huge number of strategies.  I created a list of 53 different strategies that have been employed to prevent chloroquine drugs being used in many countries. The strategies were enormously effective.  Few doctors and patients have any idea that real "magic bullets" exist to cure Covid.  Fewer still have realized that by preventing access to highly effective drugs, our rulers deliberately prolong the pandemic and maximize the deaths.
Make no mistake:  proper use of chloroquine drugs or ivermectin would be a game changer.  They would end the Covid-19 pandemic, with or without vaccines.
The banning of ivermectin in South Africa is a TRIAL BALLOON--if the powers that be can get away with it there, they will start banning it elsewhere.  Do everything in your power to prevent this from happening. Please spread the word.  Get your doctor to prescribe the drug for you.  Write letters to the newspaper.  Please DO SOMETHING!

NATIONAL CONFERENCE BRINGS ENERGY, STRATEGIES, INFORMATION TO PORTLAND
Portland Copwatch was proud to be the main hosting organization for a National Conference on Police Accountability, held October 15-17 at Portland State University with support from PSU Community for Justice. It was cosponsored by the National Coalition on Police Accountability (NCOPA), which held similar conferences in the 1990s (see PPRs #1, 4, 8, 10 &12). The event provided new and informative views on issues facing police accountability activists, and the participants left the conference with renewed enthusiasm for the tasks ahead.

About 100 people attended from 10 states and at least 15 cities. Activists, review board members, survivors and families of victims, ministers, and even a police officer came. About 20 attendees went for a candlelight walk/rally/vigil which stopped at Portland's City Hall, and at the (in)Justice Center (downtown police

Predator' cop should have gone to jail

What could the Crown attorneys possibly have been thinking when making a deal with a long-term predator such as former Const. Eric Post that doesn’t involve significant jail time? His crimes were not looking up an old boyfriend on the police computer, or fixing a parking ticket. This man threatened more than one woman with death, faced a total of 32 charges and walks away after a lousy 14 days in jail and probation.

Singapore doctors call to HALT Covid vaccination of teens as unexplained death of 13yo boy probed in US

 https://www.rt.com/news/527740-singapor ... pause-cdc/

A group of medics have penned an “urgent open letter” to Singapore’s expert committee on Covid-19 vaccination, calling for the inoculation of youths to be ceased until the US CDC clarifies why a teenage jab recipient died.
Written on “on behalf of many concerned pediatricians, primary care physicians, specialists, surgeons and GPs” and signed by a number of Singaporean medical professionals, the letter was posted on Facebook on Saturday. Its authors urged the authorities to “consider a short delay” in vaccinating youths with messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) jabs in view of the recent incident in the US.
The medics who signed the letter argued that that the CDC should be given “a few weeks to produce robust and convincing data” on the teen’s death and the possibility of a link to the inoculation. They insist the issue is urgent because Singapore is pursuing “one of the most aggressive” mRNA programs in the world, in which at least 200,000 teenage boys are expected to be vaccinated.
“Certainly, we do not want to see any more suspected vaccine-related deaths in any young persons in the prime of their life,” the letter said.
As concerns spread, Singaporean parents have also launched a petition, asking the authorities of the island city-state to suspend the vaccination of those under 30, especially school kids from 12 to 15 years of age, until the CDC probe is complete. It has so far been signed by some 2,000 people.

A deeper analysis of data presented By CDC to ACIP to hide huge rates of children's myocarditis and gain approval of childhood Covid vaccinations

Tricks used by CDC to minimize vaccine injury rates
CDC has become very enamoured of the VAERS database for Covid shots.  This is very curious, because CDC used to claim this database was only good for identifying signals, and not for calculating the rates of adverse vaccine reactions.  I have previously cited the CDC's own VAERS website, which says you cannot calculate adverse event rates using VAERS (because of the high but unknown extent of underreporting).
VAERS is a 30 year old federal vaccine safety surveillance system.  It collects data supplied voluntarily by patients, doctors, and relatives regarding adverse events occurring after vaccinations.
CDC created the V-Safe system as a new way to collect adverse event data on Covid vaccines.  V-safe has enrolled several million people receiving Covid vaccinations, who receive text messages asking them to report certain adverse events. For some reason, CDC does not collect the answers directly, but instead the reports go to the Oracle company.  Oracle aggregates the data and sends the results weekly to CDC.
Inexplicably, CDC instructed Oracle to identify serious adverse events in the reports it receives, and send them to VAERS. This causes the serious V-Safe reports to be doubly reported.  Taking data reported to one database and adding it to a different database seems to me to serve the purpose of confusing the statistical analysis of the data, and making it impossible to estimate how the reporting rate to VAERS compares with the actual occurrence rate of adverse events, and with previous VAERS reporting rates.
Past studies of VAERS underreporting (prior to the V-Safe additions) have estimated that only between 1 in 13 and 1 in 100 adverse events gets reported to the system. See:
https://childrenshealthdefense.org/defe ... ine-vaers/
But now CDC suddenly claims that "VAERS is the nation’s early warning system for vaccine safety," according to slides 9 and 15 of CDC's presentation.  The identical slide seems to have been repeated for emphasis in the presentation to CDC's Advisory Committee for Immunization Practices by CDC's Tom Shimabukuro on June 23.
The missing CDC databases
While VAERS is useful, but should not

Will you be one of the guinea pigs used by the world's public health organizations to find out whether monkeypox vaccine works? And how much myocarditis and HIV worsening it causes?

CDC claims the smallpox-moneypox vaccine Jynneos (a.k.a. Imvanex, Imvamune and MVA-BN) is 85% effective against moneypox.  But the WHO, European Medicines Association (EMA) and Nature magazine spilled the beans.  No one has any idea how effective these new vaccines will be against monkeypox, or smallpox for that matter, because no trials for efficacy were ever conducted in humans. And results in animals usually fail to predict results in humans
The WHO on July 6 pointed out that if the vaccines get used--and of course they were already being used internationally--then we must immediately collect data to learn whether they actually work.
Sadly, what WHO failed to mention, is that we need to

How do you know we are at war?/ Technocracy News

Thank you, Patrick Wood, for pointing out the stark truths we tripped over, but failed to see:

Climate Madness: Destroying The Enemy’s Food Supply Is An Age-Old Military Tactic Farmers have been declared to be the scapegoats of the mass formation of global warming loons and destroying food production is at the top of their list. Any nation that has bought into this madness is attacking the very means of our survival - food. The world is at war but nobody is crying out. ⁃

Was monkeypox seeded in Nigeria 5 years ago in anticipation of a potential outbreak in the West?

Monkeypox reemerged in Nigeria in 2017 after disappearing for 39 years.
Now that's odd.
Here's a story from NPR.  I have left out the last part of the story, which is based on claims by Michael Worobey.  Worobey tried to cover up research into the origin of AIDS and more recently, the origin of COVID, so whatever he says about monkeypox should be examined under the lens of "why is he saying this?"
