A Denver-based program that helps school districts with sex education and works to prevent teen pregnancy is closing, after the Trump administration ended its main grant early.

Colorado Youth Matter received 75 percent of its funding from the federal grant, about $750,000 per year. The grant had been scheduled to run through 2020, but the Trump administration ended the federal Teen Pregnancy Prevention Program grants as of next summer for all of the 84 organizations around the country that received them. The administration cited concerns about whether the programs were effective, a rationale critics have questioned.

California boy killed trying to protect younger sister from mother's abusive ex-boyfriend
BY MINYVONNE BURKE
NEW YORK DAILY NEWS Monday, September 25, 2017, 9:40 AM

An 8-year-old boy in California was killed trying to protect his younger sister from their mother's ex-boyfriend.

Dante Daniels, who had just started the third grade at South Sacramento's Oakridge Elementary, was brutally beaten with a hammer during the early morning of Sept. 1. He died from his injuries six days later.

A criminal complaint states that 23-year-old Deandre Chaney Jr. was performing a criminal lewd act on Dante's 7-year-old sister when the little boy stepped in to help, Fox 40 reports.

Chaney, who pleaded no contest last year to a charge of failing to register as a sex offender, was the ex-boyfriend of Dante's mother, 28-year-old Elizabeth Salone.

Man blames 'demon' for killing his girlfriend, 8-month-old son
"The guy beat my grandson with a hammer," Monique Brown, the children's grandmother told Fox 40. "Down to his spine. They couldn't save his brain."

The criminal complaint states that Chaney used lighter fluid during the attack, and at point turned the hammer and a knife on Dante's sister.

Dante Daniels was trying to protect his sister when he was killed.

"Trying to save his sister from this child molester and that's why he was beat the worst." Brown said.

According to an arrest warrant, the children were home alone with Chaney when the attack happened. Salone had asked him to watch her children while she took her brother to work, the Sacramento Bee reports.

Del. man wanted for girlfriend's murder attempts subway suicide
When she returned home, she heard one of her children crying. Salone told detectives that she was "struck at least three times" with a hammer from behind as she went to check on her child. Chaney then tied her up and poured lighter fluid on her.

Police said he grabbed her car keys and some other items and left in Salone's vehicle. Chaney was captured a day after the attack in Nevada hiding in someone's backyard.

Both Salone and

Two Texas women were arrested after police say their 4-year-old son was mauled to death by the family dogs.

Police began investigating when Jacob Brooks’ battered body was discovered in the backyard of a home in El Paso, Texas.

According to police, Jacob Brooks was left in an enclosed trampoline in the backyard of the El Paso home on July 27. He was attacked by a pack of dogs described as aggressive.

A neighbor, Ramon Payan, told the El Paso Times that the dogs “practically ate” the young boy.

NEW YORK DAILY NEWS Monday, October 2, 2017, 1:28 PM

Former Yankees manager Joe Torre told a roomful of police officers Monday how hard it was growing up with an abusive father and he thanked cops who investigate domestic violence cases.

"I was a nervous kid, and I never shared it with anybody," he told police officers at a domestic violence training conference. "And this is the whole thing: I'm so thankful for what you guys do. This has been kept in the shadows for so many years."

Torre's father, who was an NYPD cop, was violent to his mother, and though Torre never witnessed the physical abuse, he suffered the long-term effects of living with "a bully." He struggled for years with feelings of inadequacy and self-blame, he said.

Torre, who won four world championships while managing the Yankess from 1996 to 2007, founded the Safe at Home foundation with his wife Ali in 2002. The foundation provides intervention and prevention programs, counseling and awareness campaigns

"I was lucky. I had the ability to play baseball. I had a place to hide," he said. "You have other kids that really don't know what's going to happen."

The Brooklyn-born Hall of Famer also added that children who come from violent households are more at risk for trafficking.

"They want somebody to put their arm around them and be nice to them, and if that person is the wrong person, they're going to go in the wrong direction," he said.

"Thank you for what you guys do. Really, I'm touched with my heart," he told the room of police officers Monday. "These young kids are the future of our country. We need to take care of them."
