RATs of hell

The RATs of hell

the remote anonymous triggering of destruction

Within recent weeks, we have seen a resugence of articles from within the halls of US military, information technology and intelligence agencies and their various PR firms and contractor agencies about the development of and need to use “lethal cyber weapons” or, in other words, computer code that is capable of causing an “enemy’s” critical infrastructure to self-destruct.

This establishes the same kinds of arms races (and arguments about them) about numerous other forms of weaponry, mass destruction, etc., including nuclear weapons, biological and chemical weapons, information warfare, etc.

It is ripe for Hegelian games: we discovered they are working on it, so we must begin to do so ourselves so we can understand how the weaponry works at a technical level and so we can defend ourselves, and force the imposition of controls. Such games soon lead, particularly wirth the application of gaming theory and other advanced pathological hegemonic madness, to:

a “first strike” mentality;

a “let’s do a trial run on some hapless corner of the world” to make sure it works” event;

the development of covert labs and production facilities”;

an “accident”;

and more.

Two years ago, World Affairs Journal noted the swing to the offensive with DARPA’s Plan X whose goal was “to create revolutionary technologies for understanding, planning, and managing cyberwarfare.”

Like their military counterparts, cybersecurity experts in the private sector have become increasingly frustrated by their inability to stop intruders from penetrating critical computer networks to steal valuable data or even sabotage network operations. The new idea is to pursue the perpetrators back into their own networks. “We’re following a failed security strategy in cyber,” says Steven Chabinsky, formerly the head of the FBI’s cyber intelligence section and now chief risk officer at CrowdStrike, a startup company that promotes aggressive action against its clients’ cyber adversaries. “There’s no way that we are going to win the cybersecurity effort on defense. We have to go on offense.”

Nearly half-a-billion dollars have been set aside for the first wave of funding. The buzz phrases include “cyber fires”, “cyberspace joint munitions”, and other similaly-hybrid terms of warfare.

“‘Cyber joint munitions effectiveness’ describes that a particular cyber capability has been evaluated and its effectiveness is known against a particular target,” she said. The target is a person, place or object a commander is eyeing to neutralize, according to the associated Joint Chiefs of Staff policy.

“Cyber fires” has a broader meaning and “can be used for offensive or defensive objectives, and can be designed to create effects in and through cyberspace,” she said.

“… Yes, I’ve become quite a student of your operations in this region.

Thirty-four mansions, I think it was, pillaged and burned…under Colonel Montgomery’s expedition of the Combahee….”

“First squad, second platoon.

Fall out to set torches.

Prepare to fire the town.”

The discussion surrounding the firing of cyber arms hearkens back to before the days of Manhattan Project, some former military leaders say.

“It reminds me of the run-up to the strategic bombing campaigns of World War II,” said Cedric Leighton, a retired National Security Agency and Air Force intelligence director. “Just like then, the consequences of an attack using cyber munitions will not be completely foreseeable.”

http://image.slidesharecdn.com/dresden- ... 1418593947" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

“… In the past, some military academics have voiced concerns about the unintended outcomes of such maneuvers. Malicious code released into networks could backfire and harm U.S. individuals or allies, they warned.

“Due to the ‘system of systems’ nature” of cyberspace, it is very difficult to know exactly what effect” defensive or offensive actions will have on U.S. and ally assets “since we can’t be sure exactly how far out the cyber action might spread,” Dee Andrews and Kamal Jabbour wrote in a 2011 article for Air Force Space Command’s Journal for Space & Missile Professionals. “The difficulty in doing a damage estimate before cyber action is taken makes cyber friendly fire difficult to identify and mitigate.”

There are dozens of bullet points on training support work in the contracting documents.

For example, the hired contractor will run exercises on “USCYBERCOM Fires processes” with the Joint Advanced Cyber Warfare Course, the Army Cyberspace Operations Course, the Air Force Weapons School, the Joint Targeting School and other outside groups, the documents state.

[Ed.: I’ll leave it to the reader to do their own research and riff on the recent history of exercises as “cover” for covert ops.]

Certain contract personnel supporting these so-called cyber fires will be subjected to additional background reviews and will have to comply with “need-to-know” classification rules, according to officials.

Beyond unleashing malware, the chosen contract employees will help repel attacks on Defense Department smartphones housing sensitive data, according to the government. This assignment involves analyzing forensics reports on hacked mobile devices and conducting security assessments of mobile apps, among other things…..”

21stcenturywire.com reminds us about “the Stuxnet super virus, one of the most pernicious and reckless military cyber operations to date.

According to US firm Symantec’s research, Stuxnet and its sister virus, Flame, was part of ‘Operation Olympic Games’, a joint venture between the United States and Israel designed to penetrate Iranian (and Russian too) civilian infrastructure networks – including civilian nuclear power facilities.

According to the Washington Post, “The brilliance of Stuxnet lay in [the attackers] being under the radar of the target entity,” Thakur said. Both variants of Stuxnet “tried to do damage in a manner that would seem random” to the targeted party.

Despite being caught red-handed, the US ‘defense’ industrial complex has simply upped its offensive operations and are now talking about how cyber warfare can be used to inflicted “collateral damage”…. Raytheon, Northrop Grumman and Lockheed Martin are some of the defense firms competing for an upcoming $460 million US Cyber Command project to give the American military the power to turn an enemy’s critical infrastructure against them with weaponized code, according to Defense One. A 114-page draft of a 5-year contract released on September 30 details a plan to get private companies to support military operations with cyberwarfare…. [T]his kind of offensive cyberwarfare isn’t esoteric stuff relegated to one strange corner of the US military. In fact, digital arms designed to kill are now explicitly sanctioned under the Pentagon’s newly-published Law of War manual, with an entire chapter devoted to cyber warfare.

Cyber strikes are allowed even if “it is certain that civilians would be killed or injured — so long as the reasonably anticipated collateral damage isn’t excessive in relation to what you expect to gain militarily,” said retired Major General Charles J. Dunlap, executive director of Duke University’s Center on Law, Ethics and National Security. “These are essentially the same rules as for attacks employing traditional bombs or bullets”…

Watch this well-done four-minute video on Stuxnet (Direction and Motion Graphics: Patrick Clair; Written by: Scott Mitchell):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DSMOs7CF1Eo" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

[I’ve left autoplay on: note especially the one-hour talk by the Stuxnet “decoder” and the half-hour documentary on military training in cyber defense.]

According to an RT article on cyber-weapons safeguards:

“… A US Defense Department directive [pdf] signed last week sets the stage for safeguards that would limit any collateral damage from dangerous robotic instruments of war, ideally to “minimize the probability and consequences of failures” in drones and other autonomous or semi-autonomous weapons “that could lead to unintended engagements.”

The document, signed by Deputy Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter, outlines rules stating that those weapons must “be designed to allow commanders and operators to exercise appropriate levels of human judgment over the use of force” by way of “rigorous hardware and software verification and validation.” When those weapons are attacking the cyber-grid, though, the Defense Department doesn’t necessarily seem to think the same precautions need to be put in place.

While the directive is written to explicitly set up safeguards for autonomous and semi-autonomous weapon systems, one subsection of the document acknowledges that it ‘Does not apply to autonomous or semi-autonomous cyberspace systems for cyberspace operations.’ ….”

See the 20-page pdf “Moral Cyber Weapons”:

Moral Cyber Weapons – Part-II-CH-6 – 24Oct2013 (3)

Here is an article on lethal autonomous-weapon systems and cyber-security that says:

“… It is the combination of weapons, ICS and remote control and monitoring technologies which introduces not just more determined threat actors, but also attack vectors via well-known wireless and satellite communication technologies, where a lot of security research has been done.

There have been several examples of attacks. The Iranian Military claimed to have used GPS jamming attacks to force a UAV into an autonomous mode and caused a denial of service, while some researchers, such as Samy Kamkar, have demonstrated command and control over UAVs via wireless protocols.

Researchers have even conducted attacks against tele-operated surgical robots over the Internet and over the last decade there have been many examples of Advanced Persistent Threats using malware such as ‘BlackEnergy’ to target ICS.

The main problem in this arena is the fact that there are zero international laws or treaties on cyber warfare. This is a serious issue given that the strongest cyber weapons, attacks on infrastructure, disproportionally target the weak. These attacks on infrastructure could take out power to hospitals, elderly homes and could render the digital communication, transportation and businesses useless, leaving innocent civilians as the victims. For more see The Tallinn Manual. Improving the accuracy of current systems. This is where computing in warfare has gone the furthest. Drones, Tomahawk missiles and laser guidance systems have allowed for a more humane asymmetrical war. The flip side is that this gives the countries who can afford it an excuse to go to war for less egregious reasons.

According to Stefano’s definition: a cyber weapon is:

A device or any set of computer instructions intended to unlawfully damage a system acting as a critical infrastructure, its information, the data or programs therein contained or thereto relevant, or even intended to facilitate the interruption, total or partial, or alteration of its operation.

“… ‘Unlike traditional espionage malware or even the Stuxnet virus that sabotaged Iranian nuclear centrifuges, cyber fires would impact human life, according to former Defense officials and a recently released Defense Department ‘Law of War Manual’ … The manual lays out three sample actions the Pentagon deems uses of force in cyberspace: ‘trigger a nuclear plant meltdown; open a dam above a populated area, causing destruction * ; or disable air traffic control services , resulting in airplane crashes.’ …”

What happens when a logic bomb escapes the lab?

What happens when one of the people comes to deeply understand the ramifications of the work going on inside one of these secretive offices or schools and gets a conscience? WIll be or she be defenestrated?

Who will write the new novels about the new Dresden and the new Hiroshimae?

Wasn’t Fukushima one of these?

Will we see oligarchs hiring computer hackers to create chaos out of which they can create future wealth, like the hurricane in New Orleans or the actions of some driving cultural chaos in Europe?

Will we see bloggers writing satirical pieces about waking up in a world of moral midgets?

Will we see position papers developed by groups of medical care responders, teachers, and others from under the umbrella of “Citizens for Social Grace”?

Will the people who write those position papers be fired from, and blacklisted away from, meaningful employment?

Is there a Malthusian, Luciferian angle to this?

Translation by Vic Sadot, Truth Troubadour Blog, Berkeley, California.

Francois Hollande announced yesterday in his war “without thank yous” speech that he intends to wage against terrorism even now that we know it was France itself that delivered weapons to Syrian “Al Qaida” rebels. Should he not order his own arrest also as an accomplice???

This morning the main stream media announced that a French Syrian passport was found, the terrorists would therefore be Syrians. Decidedly, these terrorists are accustomed to walk around with their passports like they did on September 11, Charlie (Hebdo 1-07-15), and those of yesterday. These terrorists simply love to leave their passports everywhere!

Obama, who was the first to speak publicly following the attacks in Paris, announced that he is prepared to militarily “help France” in its fight against terrorism. But do not tremble too much when Obama makes this announcement, knowing that the United States is the number one terrorist state in the world. Here there is no confusion, as I recall, because the American people, like all the French now, are the victims of their criminal government. No judgment on our peoples. It is the same for all countries, including Israel.

A few weeks before the attacks, we learned that the French police will now have the right to shoot live ammunitions against the French population. As is done in the United States for a long time now, the crimes committed by the police are countless.

France is being “Americanized” in everything about that country that is for the worse.

It is clear that the “US” does not want to bloody itself directly against Russia and China in Syria. However, the New World Order is determined to trigger World War III. But they need a super good excuse to go, the ideal is always a false-flag attack, as was the case with Pearl Harbor for World War II, or September 11 for Iraq.

The French government is a toy totally subject to the US. We have been used to destroy Libya. History will remember that the blood of Libyans is on the hands of French (via the Zionist criminal Sakozy trained by the CIA), and not the Americans and their other sponsors / Saudi / Israeli (here I quote the countries but in reality you can forget these countries and call it “The Cabal”, which in reality is international and gangrene in all these countries. That is more accurate and precise.

The problem is now created with these attacks (ACTION – REACTION – SOLUTION), the Netherlands pawn now in charge of getting a bunch of disgusting measures in France, both economic as with TAFTA, whether for population monitoring, increased repression, and new security measures that will once again take away the rights and freedoms of all citizens. But above all, that will give Francois Hollande the power to start a war in Syria. And I am not even talking about the media that will push our country into hatred between our communities. You can be sure that freedom of expression and the Internet will suffer too.

Clearly for me, Hollande will try to pass on to very serious things in the coming weeks. Maybe he will declare war in Syria? No matter what he does, it will not be his decision, but under the orders of the New World Order that will follow. Holland is a puppet. He obeyed. It follows the plan. He does what he is ordered to do.

What will happen?

I do not want to prophesy, but just share my views on what will happen soon in the world.

I forge my perspective based on the many sources of information that I am for years observing taking place “behind the scenes”.

Things will get worse in the weeks and months to come because the Cabal is totally hopeless. In fact, the majority of them know they have already lost. Some have already visited. But there remains a hard core of Kabbalah who refuses to surrender and the only way for them to get away with it would be the third world war.

There will be no third world war.

Since the attacks of September 11, 2001 which were to trigger a third world war it is clear that the Cabal cannot. There are splits within the same ruling Cabal, fratricidal conflicts between them. We also see that the US military, the Pentagon, and the CIA are also divided, resistant factions within each group clash, the chain of command is often broken and generals refuse to obey orders.

Meanwhile, the resistance is organized, Russia and China have chosen their sides, followed by other countries that make up the BRICS, and they are now ready to replace the Criminal banking system of the EDF.

The information, real information, is too much circulated on the Internet and the critical mass of people needed to be awake is now reached.

Disclosure is now everywhere, and all over the place, on all subjects. This is a tidal tide.

Time will tell if I am right or not. But in any case my view is that their end is very close. But we still have tests to pass before we get there. Maybe it will start a civil war in some countries, or a localized war, most importantly in the Middle East, or elsewhere. Yes, it is possible. But that will never lead to a third world war, in my opinion, but rather lead to other sources of resistance.

We (The Resistance) are too many and too strong now!

Each action by the Cabal causes a reaction of The Resistance.

You can be sure that new disclosures of The Resistance will arrive quickly. I am thinking of Edward Snowden… information that has been decrypted will be released shortly. But not only that … Plenty of evidence about the Cabal’s crimes will continue to go out. And it is for each of us to relay this information to the maximum, rather than following the herd of stupid “Charlies”.

Anyone who wakes up and shares the information of the Resistance instead of focusing on state propaganda from the main stream media is The RESISTANCE.

More than ever, remain focused and concentrated.

Victory is near!

Within one hour of the Paris attacks and without any evidence, the story was set in stone that the perpetrator was ISIL. This is the way propagada works.

When the West does it, it always succeeds, because the world is accustomed to following the lead of the West. I was amazed to see, for example, Russian news services helping to spread the official story of the Paris attacks despite Russia herself having suffered so often from planted false stories.

Has the Russian media forgotten MH-17? The minute the story was reported that the Malaysian airliner was hit by a Russian missile over eastern Ukraine in the hands of separatists, the blame was ascribed to Russia. And that is where the blame remains despite the absence of evidence.

Has the Russian media also forgotten the “Russian invasion of Ukraine”? This preposterous story is accepted everywhere in the West as gospel.

Has the Russian media forgot about the book by the German newspaper editor who wrote that every European journalist of consequence was an asset of the CIA?

One would have thought that experience would have taught Russian media sources to be careful about explanations that originate in the West.

So now we have what is likely to be another false story set in stone. Just as a few Saudis with box cutters outwitted the entire US national security state, ISIL managed to acquire unacquirable weapons and outwit French intelligence while organizing a series of attacks in Paris.

Why did ISIL do this? Blowback for France’s small role in Washington’s Middle East violence?

Why not the US instead?

Or was ISIL’s purpose to have the flow of refugees into Europe blocked by closed borders? Does ISIL really want to keep all of its opponents in Syria and Iraq when instead it can drive them out to Europe? Why have to kill or control millions of people by preventing their flight?

Don’t expect any explanations or questions from the media about the story that is set in stone.

The threat to the European political establishment is not ISIL. The threats are the rising anti-EU, anti-immigrant political parties: Pegida in Germany, the UK Independence Party, and the National Front in France. The latest poll shows the National Front’s Marine Le Pen leading as the likely French president.

Something had to be done about the hords of refugees from Washington’s wars, or the establishment political parties faced defeat at the hands of political parties that are also unfriendly to Europe’s subservience to Washington.

EU rules about refugees and immigrants and Germany’s acceptance of one million of the refugees, together with heavy criticism of those governments in Eastern Europe that wanted to put up fences to keep out the refugees, made closing borders impossible.

With the Paris terror attacks, what was impossible became possible, and the President of France immediately announced the closing of France’s borders. The border closings will spread. The main issue of the rising dissident political parties will be defused. The EU will be safe, and so will Washington’s sovereignty over Europe. [But, Dr. Roberts, what about the fact that ISIS/ISIL is deeply connected to Washington, and that the NGO’s and Sorosian influences arre in theory the engineers of the refugee crisis?]

Whether or not the Paris attacks were a false flag operation for the purpose of obtaining these results, these results are the consequences of the attacks. These results serve the interests of the European political establishment and Washington.

Is ISIL so unsophisticated not to have realized that? If ISIL is that unsophisticated, how did ISIL so easily deceive French intelligence? [Ed.: See below. ] Indeed, can French intelligence be intelligent?

Can Western peoples be intelligent to fall for a story set in stone prior to any evidence? In the West, facts are created by self-serving statements from governments. Investigation is not part of the process. When 90 percent of the US media is owned by six mega-corporations, it cannot be any different.

As The Matrix grows in the absurdity of its claims, it nevertheless manages to become even more invulnerable.

“If you want further proof of the damage that Edward Snowden has wrought on American intelligence capabilities, look at the relative ease with which the Paris terrorists planned, traveled and killed in Europe.

“The adversary has gone and is going to school against our capabilities,” NGA Director Robert Cardillo told reporters here today. They are operating in “ways that stay under our ability to detect,” he admitted, calling the fact of the attacks “a failure” of the Intelligence Community, which exists to protect the public.

NYTimes Neglects to Mention Passport is Fake – (2015-11-15)

“A U.S. intelligence official told CBS News the Syrian passport might be fake. The official said the passport did not contain the correct numbers for a legitimate Syrian passport and the picture did not match the name.”

“13/11 Paris Massacre: Pour Quel Profit?” Uncharacteristically weak and fuzzy Escobar. He does vaguely touch on thesis that the Americans seem to be attempting to weaken Europe. “Talmudism, Imperialism, Terrorism”:

“Jewish Zionism, Christian Zionism and Muslim Takfirism (or Muslim Zionism) – all have been allowed by the world at large, willingly or otherwise, to flourish especially over the past seven decades – since the forced establishment of the state of Israel, to be more precise. Yes, people in the Middle East and in America were always religious folk, but they were not so radicalized and liberally, openly practicing religious prejudice the way they are nowadays. It would seem to be the case that the immoral creation of the state of Israel revived with it the decrepit Talmudic desert superstitions and narcissistic tribalism that have directly led to the violence and terrorism we are witnessing today. Talmudism is now in its most dangerous state: it has evolved from a hapless fringe sub sect and into a powerful and destructive military instrument hellbent on creating the darkest of shackles for humanity. Hellbent on ‘cleansing’ the world from its (complex) sins – purging the stains of humanity through merciless fire.” [Ed.: Emphasis added]

“Hell Comes to Paris”:

“Allowing for a moment the idea that the Assad government was the main cause of the Syrian conflict when it began in 2011, in 2015 the same government is without any shadow a necessary part of it ending with Syria’s survival. Barrel bombs are an atrociously indiscriminate weapon, for sure, and their use rightly comes under the category of war crime. However just as the war crime of the allied firebombing of Dresden in 1945 did not invalidate the war against European fascism then, neither does the atrocity of Syrian barrel bombs invalidate the war against its Middle East equivalent today. When the survival of a country and its culture and history is at stake, war can never be anything else but ugly, which is why the sooner it is brought to a conclusion in Syria the better.”

It is curious that while World Jewry, as always, screams and wails for war, the American government is quietly cooperating with Putin’s plan. “Putin Plan: The Russian President’s Strategy for Syria” “Putin to pursue sponsors of terrorism” The Americans are at least pretending to cooperate diplomatically, and are assisting the Kurds to de-terrorize Syrian Kurdistan (vitally important to the total de-terrorizing plan as the Americans block Turkey), while the Russians help the Syrian army de-terrorize the rest of the country.

“The outcome is a virtual statistical impossibility. But it fits a pattern that has made Ohio elections infamous since the 2004 “selection” of George W. Bush over John Kerry.

As in 2004, this year’s balloting was supervised by a Secretary of State with a heavy partisan stake in the outcome.

In 2004, the presidential voting was supervised by J. Kenneth Blackwell, who simultaneously served as the co-chair of Ohio’s Committee to Re-Elect Bush and Cheney.

In 2015, the general voting was supervised by Jon Husted, who vehemently opposed pot legalization and threatened legal action against the sponsors of the referendum.

In both 2004 and 2015, the vast majority of votes were cast on electronic machines owned by private corporations, with proprietary software. When a federal judge mandated a recount in a class action suit in 2004, 56 of Ohio’s 88 counties failed to produce the required documentation. No recount was ever conducted. (disclosure: Bob was a lead attorney and Harvey a plaintiff in that federal lawsuit).

This year many registrations in the state were compiled on electronic polling books. In Cincinnati, the poll books “broke down” and citizens were denied the ability to vote. Husted provided no provisional ballots or other means by which potential voters could have cast ballots until the machines were fixed. Most were told to “come back later.”

It is unclear if the sponsors of the referendum will demand a recount. There are no easily available public means to monitor or verify the poll books or the final electronic tally in Ohio.”

Hilarious, from April 22, 2013: “EU lifts Syria oil embargo to bolster rebels”. The only group exploiting that oil is ISIS (and it remains the fact that the only country to try to interrupt the ISIS oil business is Russia). I have no idea why all Europeans aren’t locking their politicians into legislative buildings, and burning the buildings down.

I suppose we should be happy that the French response so far is an increase in its campaign of pretending to attack ISIS. There must be excellent communications between ISIS commanders and the bombers of the Zio-American alliance for so many bombs to hit so few ISIS positions! The answer: ” . . . after coordination with U.S. defense officials who helped with the targeting“.

“After the Charlie Hebdo murders in January, 40 world leaders marched with linked arms through the streets of Paris proclaiming, among other things, that they would give priority to the defeat of Isis and its al-Qaeda equivalents.

But, in practice, they did nothing of the sort. When Isis forces attacked Palmyra in eastern Syria in May, the US did not launch air strikes against it because the city was defended by the Syrian army and Washington was frightened of being accused of keeping President Bashar al-Assad in power.

In effect, the US handed Isis a military advantage which it promptly used to seize Palmyra, behead captured Syrian soldiers and blow up the ancient ruins.”

The spectacle of Erdoğan complaining about the terrorism he sponsors is one of the simple joys of our time.

SOURCE: RECODE

As it plans its response to a series of six terrorist attacks Friday night that killed 127 and injured 180, the government of France will likely step up its efforts to keep tabs on the movements and communications of people within its borders.

As it happens, the attacks have occurred only a few months after legislators in that country passed a sweeping new surveillance law that gives the government broad powers to closely monitor the mobile phone and Internet communications of French citizens.

Passed by the French Parliament in May in response to the attacks on the Paris-based magazine Charlie Hebdo, the law allows government to monitor phone calls and emails of people suspected of connections to terrorism without the authorization of a judge.

But it goes further than that. The law requires Internet service providers to install “black boxes” that are designed to vacuum up and analyze metadata on the Web-browsing and general Internet use habits of millions of people using the Web, and to make the data available to intelligence agencies.

In exceptional cases, the law allows the government to deploy what are called “ISMI catchers” to track all mobile phone communications in a given area. These catchers are basically designed to impersonate cell towers, but they intercept and record communications data from phones within its range, and can also track the movements of people carrying the phones.

Finally, the law allows government agents to break into the homes of suspected terrorists for the purpose of planting microphone bugs, surveillance cameras, and to install keyloggers on their computers, devices that capture data on every keystroke and mouse click.

Critics of the law complain that there’s not much oversight and that the conditions under which the laws powers can be triggered are vague. As The Verge noted in July, the government can authorize the surveillance for “major foreign policy interests” or to counter “organized delinquency.”

Surveillance operations are overseen by a nine-person committee led by Prime Minister Manuel Vallas. But that committee has only an advisory role, and cannot overrule decisions by the prime minister.

FBI Stymied By Islamic State’s Use of Encryption, Director Says
Law-enforcement officials seek greater access to encrypted communication

The director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation said investigators have been stymied by Islamic State’s use of encryption.

FBI Director James Comey, speaking at a cybersecurity conference Wednesday at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, said the bureau has tracked Islamic State recruiting efforts on Twitter and reviewed private messages between sympathizers after obtaining court orders.

But when Islamic State commanders find a recruit willing to die for the cause, they move their communications over to encrypted platforms, “going dark,” he said.

Mr. Comey didn’t say whether the encryption was used in planning or executing the Paris attacks, but the massacre loomed large at the conference, which included law-enforcement officials from the U.S., U.K. and France.

His remarks were part of a public campaign by law-enforcement and intelligence officials for access to encrypted phones and communications, in the face of new software and devices promoted by companies as impervious to government surveillance.

The aftermath of the Paris attacks could bolster the argument in favor of such access after years of movement toward more customer privacy, fueled by revelations of U.S. surveillance programs.

U.S. counterterrorism officials haven’t determined whether terrorists used encrypted communications to plan or execute the Paris attacks, but they said they expect evidence to emerge as the investigation continues.

Sen. Richard Burr (R., N.C.), chairman of the U.S. Senate Intelligence Committee, said after a briefing by senior intelligence officials Tuesday that the terrorists involved in the Paris attacks likely used “end-to-end” encryption. He said encryption was likely because no direct communication among the terrorists was detected.

Islamic State, which claimed credit for the bloodshed, has demonstrated its technological savvy in tutorials for sympathizers on how to evade electronic surveillance on the cheap, including an eight-minute video explaining the eavesdropping capabilities of hostile governments and how they track phones.

Other Islamic State bulletins have analyzed the vulnerabilities of brands of electronic equipment and messaging applications, ranking them based on their ability to foil surveillance.

In separate remarks Wednesday, Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr.. said his office has been unable to access evidence on encrypted phones in 111 cases handled by his office. Newer operating systems on phones made by Apple Inc. and Google can’t be unlocked without the user passcode, even by the companies themselves.

Mr. Vance called for legislation that would mandate that mobile-phone companies have the capacity to unlock a customer device when presented with a search warrant. “We don’t want a ke

Hellfire Missile Shipped to Cuba Targets U.S./Cuban Relations

http://www.counterpunch.org/2016/01/12/ ... relations/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

An AGM-114 Hellfire missile hung on the rail of an US Air Force (USAF) MQ-1L Predator Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) is inscribed with, "IN MEMORY OF HONORABLE RONALD REAGAN."

An AGM-114 Hellfire missile hung on the rail of an US Air Force (USAF) MQ-1L Predator Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) is inscribed with, “IN MEMORY OF HONORABLE RONALD REAGAN.”

On Thursday, January 7, 2016, the date known in Latin culture as the one when the three Kings of the traditional Christian nativity story drop in on children, bearing gifts, the Wall Street Journal published the news that a very special gift had been dropped in Cuba: a made-in-the-USA air-to-ground Hellfire missile. Presumably, the offering would have delighted Cuba’s president, as he might finally having a look inside yet another one of the instruments that the U.S. had prepared for doing away with Cuba’s Castros.

But what really lies beneath this extraordinary journalistic scoop brought to light by Devlin Barrett and Gordon Lubold more than 19 months after it actually took place?

After closely reading the article and the comments it has engendered, including those from well-known politicians like John McCain, a number of questions surface that must be evaluated as part of any meaningful analysis.

First, why is this story coming to light only now, when the events are said to have taken place two years ago, in the first half of 2014?

Why does the story, filled with quotes from unnamed officials and “people familiar with the case” have so many contradictions and lack of detail?

How can the “sensitive” military hardware by an irresponsible network of private shippers be explained?

Is the Hellfire such an important piece of military technology that it would sink the U.S. armed forces if it fell into enemy hands? Would Russia, Iran, North Korea or China have any interest in such technology?

Would the Cubans achieve any concrete benefit from turning over such an “advanced” instrument to any of the countries or powers fighting against U.S. troops the world over?

Finally, could the publication of this article, suggesting on the basis of no evidence whatsoever, that Cuba might have directed an intelligence operation to steal such prized military technology, possibly be related to this very delicate moment in U.S./ Cuban relations?

In order to offer a proper analysis, a number of sources must be consulted in order to corroborate facts, and this is what this article will attempt to address.

For starters, let’s examine the contradictory evidence presented by the unnamed sources.

According to Lockheed Martin, the Hellfire’s manufacturer, a missile with an inert (dummy) warhead was sent to Spain, to be used in NATO exercises. No mention is made of how the missile was to be used in these maneuvers.

According to missile experts, there are three possible uses for such missiles in practice maneuvers: 1. To be used in exercises where they are manually placed in their delivery devices (helicopters, planes, or drones) to practice combat readiness. 2. To be launched against fictitious targets, in which case, active warheads are generally employed, in order to evaluate their battlefield effectiveness. 3. To be used as targets themselves, standing in for airborne objects in anti-aircraft target practice and radio-electronic interference exercises, simulating real conditions as closely as possible.

If we take the WSJ journalists at their word, the missile was to have returned to the U.S. from Germany after it was used, which eliminates alternatives 2 and 3, because in either of those cases the missile would have been destroyed during practice.

Considering that option number 1 is the only possible variant, a reasonable doubt suddenly stands out: Does it make any practical sense to send missiles to Spain from Orlando, Florida for the sole purpose of allowing soldiers to physically handle them between the warehouses and the aircraft, and vice versa? Wouldn’t it make more sense to use the missiles already onsite in Germany and Spain, where the U.S. has a huge force which ought to have plenty of missiles on hand for practice? There it would be simply a matter of removing the explosive charge and replacing it with an inert one, which could be sent from the U.S. if necessary. Is it possible that the U.S. does not have enough storage space to keep these missiles at its multiple bases in Rota, Spain, or Germany, and as a result is forced to send them all the way back to the U.S.?

Basic reasoning shows that the story regarding the objective behind the missile’s transfer is hardly credible.

Another element that sheds light on the affair has to do with the strange network of private and state-affiliated companies that handle this kind of cargo. From what we can observe, apparently missiles, and presumably

China is on a collision course with ISIS. Bejing’s ambitious plan to build links to central Asia and Europe will demand a better counter-terrorism policy, says the Council on Foreign Relations’ Rachel Brown, here.

Say what you will about a possibly broken navigation system in the Arabian Gulf, if the U.S. were really going to invade Iran, it would have used a “a claustrophobic torpedo-like, 30-foot mini-submarine capable of putting six to ten Navy SEALs on enemy shores,” writes Defense One Tech Editor Patrick Tucker.

“Currently, U.S. Special Operations Command, or SOCOM, is testing a couple of different versions of a mini submarine for commandos: the 31-foot ‘Button’ 5.60 by General Dynamics and Giunio Santi Engineering of Italy and the S351 by Submergence Group out of Connecticut and Britain’s MSUBS. (In October of last year, they successfully completed testing on a 23-foot test sub called the S301i by Lockheed Martin.) They’re piloted by humans and directed by sonar. The Button has a speed of 60 nautical miles at 5 knots. The picture above is of the technology demonstrator for the ‘Button.’ The sub that the military ultimately deploys may look a bit different.” Read his report in full, here.

There are also six to eight paragraphs on Ash Carter’s “expeditionary targeting force”.

Groping for the truth

Everybody in the west loves this mass groping story: “North Africa Exports Rape Culture to Germany”. By North Africa, he seems to mean Egypt. Are there masses of Egyptian refugees in Germany? The entire story, and its western analysis, is so reminiscent of similar stories told of immigrants and ‘the other’ over the ages (and note how feminism elbows the old-fashioned and quaint concerns about racism). The deep fear, as always, is miscegenation (fear of which also explains ammosexuality, why Americans desperately need so many guns – ‘where’s the white women at?’). “Group of “teens” grope woman jogger in Central Park. The comments SHOW whites are waking up!” “The Awful Experience Of The 1st Time I Was Groped By An Indian Man”. While I was searching I kept finding links to porn movies! The other day I couldn’t help but notice that is has become respectable in progressive thinking to note the naturalness of preference for ‘our own kind’. Maybe a business model for The New New Republic is returning to extolling the virtues of The Bell Curve.

More: “Germany Just Screwed Europe”. Screwed.

“The Recapture Of Selma: Momentous Victory For The SAA & Allies” “Selma Village: “finally, After So Many Years, And So Many Martyred Syrian Arab Army Soldiers, And Civilians, We Have Victory.””

“Syria UN ambassador: “The whole Syrian people is besieged””

“Was the Bagram Airfield Plane Crash of 2013 an Act of Terrorism?” Note that the answer has big implications for legal liability. It does look like a very compromised investigation.

“Obama schooled on Twitter about Middle East history” I think the year Barry was looking for was 1948. “Why Israel has silenced the 1948 story of Nazareth’s survival”

“Op-Ed: Did Iran ‘toy’ with the U.S.?” Kerry acted like a adult, appropriately apologized, and everything went smoothly and safely. Everybody is looking forward to the next president starting WWIII over something like this.

the governing gang

“The carefully planned ambush, which displayed detailed intelligence regarding the plans of Finicum and his friends, was a joint operation between the FBI and the Oregon State Police…. The federal statute under which Ammon Bundy and six other members of the CCF have been charged, 18 USC section 372, offers no protection whatsoever to the persons and property of U.S. citizens. That measure, enacted in 1861, is designed to protect “officers” of the federal government (including administrative personnel and other bureaucrats) as they prey upon the Regime’s subjects. It originally targeted actual and suspected sympathizers with the Confederacy, which in practice meant anybody who respected and defended the right of states to withdrawn from the Union, even if motivated by an ignoble cause…. A “government,” [as] explained in The City of God, is simply a gang that “acquires territory, establishes a base, captures cities and subdues peoples,” and then achieves legitimacy “not by the renouncing of aggression but by the attainment of impunity.” …

In her sophomoric screed called a “criminal complaint ,” FBI Special Agent (she is, to be certain, a very “special” agent) Katherine Armstrong uses quadruple hearsay to depict the “occupiers” as a nest of terrorists bent on wreaking bloody havoc…. No being in whom we can find even a faint flicker of rationality could genuinely believe that anybody — let alone the entire country — was threatened and intimidated by the “occupiers.” But people whose position in society depends on the threat and exercise of lethal violence are intimidated by those who are prepared to call their bluff.

This, more than anything else, explains why LaVoy Finicum was left to die in the snow while his killers hurled flash-bang grenades at the terrified survivors in his vehicle. State-inflicted death is the last argument of tyrants, particularly those who fear that defiance may become contagious .”

Trump Calls for Iowa Election Do-Over, Plane Makes Emergency Landing Hours Later

February 3rd, 2016 by Kevin

Trump is talking about cutting off cheap labor for jobs that can’t be outsourced, and, he wants to, in effect, ban outsourcing to keep jobs in the U.S.

All together now: “Not going to happen.”

However, daring to broach the vote fraud issue this early… Maybe that falls into a different category of indiscretion.

Donald Trump’s Private Plane Makes Emergency Landing in Nashville:

Donald Trump’s private jet made an emergency landing in Nashville Wednesday afternoon after the pilot reported engine problems, officials said.

I haven’t voted for a U.S. Presidential candidate since the 1990s (Ross Perot), so please don’t get me wrong. I’m not a Trump supporter. From what I’ve heard out of Trump, with regard to rounding up illegal aliens for deportation and blanket banning of travel to the U.S. for Muslims, etc. that stuff is dangerous.

I know, I know…

“Kevin, you’re talking about presidential politics.” *gasp*

Yeah, well, when a guy dares to start talking about the unmentionable process related to how the political sausage is made, and then his plane needs to make an emergency landing hours later, that’s Coincidence? in my book.

Via: ABC:

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump is accusing rival Ted Cruz of stealing the Iowa caucuses and is demanding a do-over.

“Based on the fraud committed by Senator Ted Cruz during the Iowa Caucus, either a new election should take place or Cruz results nullified,” Trump tweeted Wednesday.

“Ted Cruz didn’t win Iowa, he stole it. That is why all of the polls were so wrong and why he got far more votes than anticipated,” he wrote.

“Gangs, populism, and conspiracy theory overshadow West’s role in refugee crisis” The crisis is a political perpetual motion machine, with the stupid reaction leading to more of the underlying cause of the crisis, and thus more crisis, and so on.

“A Change of Heart at The NY Times!” Mocking the blood pouring from the fangs of the NYT.

“Noam Chomsky opposes cultural boycott of Israel” The overarching theme of noamianism is never offering any possible solutions. Liberal Zionism is a trick to buy time.

“Palestinians cry foul over planned mixed-gender Western Wall section” As usual, the Jews are squabbling over the loot they stole, a trick to allow them to steal more.

” . . . several commentators expressed concern that Microsoft, a Rubio backer, was counting the votes.” “Why I think Clinton did not win the Iowa caucuses: The spread between Clinton and Sanders remained at 49.8 to 49.6 percent for soooo long, increased a bit, a few times, but always returned to 49.8 to 49.6, never quite getting to 49.7 to 49.7. And Des Moines was at 83% percent for evvvvver. Until REALLY LATE.”

“South Front” 3 February 2016 Aleppo [pop-up] maps

IMO you can’t understand real war (as opposed to CT ops) without good situation maps. “South Front” is an international site that carries good military news. We will display “South Front” tactical maps so long as they continue to present useful information. It should be noted that the “jaws” of R+6 operations are closing west of Kuweires air base (gap appears to be 2.5 kms now) and northwest of Aleppo proper (gap is just a few hundred meters). When these gaps close significant rebel forces will be “pocketed” inside the encirclements formed.

It is not the markings on the email headers that make the contents state secrets; it is the vulnerability of the contents of the emails to impair the government’s national security mission that rationally characterizes them as secrets.

Causing state secrets to reside in a nonsecure, nongovernmental venue, whether done intentionally or negligently, constitutes the crime of espionage.

attorney Keith Labella, editor of gangstalkingismurder.wordpress.com.

Mr. Labella has researched gangstalking (also known as “mobbing”) for over a decade after his own experience with the phenomenon while working for a Wall Street securities firm in the late 1990s.

A graduate of Baruch College and Fordham Law School, Labella was admitted to the New York Bar but has withdrawn from practice and is presently living in Southern California. He has used his legal training to successfully file numerous Freedom of Information Act requests with federal agencies, including the FBI, that confirm government knowledge and complicity in various gangstalking programs.

In 2010 Labella successfully petitioned the Department of Justice with FOIA requests, eliciting research results on crime reports that confirms about 3.4 million Americans report having been victims of gangstalking. Of these reports 447,000 (13%) were stalked by three or more individuals, suggesting coordinated government and/or corporate efforts.…

… these programs are intimately tied to US military and government agencies, and that gangstalking can involve targeting of families who have military or intelligence ties over several generations…..”

“… The cover image for the story was a gunman pointing his gun to the sky, flushed in tones of orange, red and black. A passenger on the flight had seen it, got scared, and responded to law enforcement’s call of “If you see something, say something.”

Five days later, an agent from the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force called Saltzman and asked to visit to him. They had similar questions to the NYPD but ended their interrogation by asking him, “Do you have any deep issues with the United States of America?” ….”

Though it seems there is nothing to lose by evacuating a school and being safe, there are significant costs associated with the growing number of school closures. In fact, the price tag can be staggering.

Syria’s Enemies Seek Face Saving Escalation Measures

While we can expect some new attempts for escalation I expect that these will be mere face saving moves. It will take some additional time until the reality will sink in and until some other issue can be found to distract from their inevitable retreat.”

If, indeed, armed conflict is coming to America, perhaps some further preparation is necessary. I ordered up Samuel Culper’s book SHTF Intelligence: An Intelligence Analyst’s Approach to Community Security weeks ago, but it has not yet arrived. He’s apparently out doing some recon. Stewart Rhodes and the Oathkeepers have strongly recommended development of community preparedness teams which surely differ from Homeland Security’s community emergency response teams.

The threat of heavily-armed gangs has not yet emerged beyond “Saturday night specials” but Tursday night 2/3/16, two NYPD officers were shot in some Bronx housing projects coinky-dinkily on the very same evening on which ION TV showed a replay of a Blue Bloods episode (“The Bitter End”) in which Vinnie Cruz was killed by a street gang in the projects where he grew up. That one followed another episode in which a rogue cop with sniper training was “in the wind” after having already shot cops in Miami.

Blue Bloods is a CBS/ Leonard Goldberg production notable, in my mind, for the eleventh episode (naturally) in the second season at the end of which the New York City police commissiner played by Tom Selleck, a character who had responded on 9/11 to the North Tower, reflected at the reflecting pool on why his partner died.

“… The entire episode, says series co-executive producer/writer Brian Burns, was ‘all built with the intention of having the final scene [there], where Frank could come down here and reflect on these pools and all the men and women that were lost that day.’ …”

I reflected on why the NYPD Police Commissioner, as the star of a “police procedural drama”, wasn’t acting personally or departmentally to do the detective work necessary to track down the criminals responsible for the deaths of thousands of his citizens.

Perhaps at one of those multi-generational Sunday dinners the ‘blue bloods” of New York can discuss the

prolonged isolation prior to or in the absence of trial, sensory deprivation, and a lack of independent monitoring going on in their metropolis.

But, to borrow a phrase from a blogger who now hides his blog from public view, pardon my digression.

If we are going to live in a world in which community security teams, SWAT teams, and armed gangs operate in a social environment also filled with mercenaries hired by extremely wealthy people, as exist in Europe, then perhaps we need to find ourselves a patron who can buy us a car like the “Al Capone gangsta car” and have it fitted with lightweight ballistic panels in a variety of composites, sizes and threat protection levels.

In all likelihood, we are not prominent heads of state, politicians, religious leaders, business executives, diplomats, celebrities, athletes, or members of royal families.

Perhaps you have a custom project.

Maybe you need work done on your boat, or your plane, or your building.

Whatever your vehicle of choice, you may want to consider putting a copy of this manual in the glove compartment.

But be careful that you don’t overdo it when you “armor up”.

“… cultivate the ability to keep your heart open….”

Muscular

“In Defence of Single-Member Plurality” (footnotes removed):

“Parties evolved in our system so that the House of Commons could support a government. The proponents of proportional representation have got it all backwards: parliament does not exist in order to serve parties; instead, it exists in order to support a government that can carry out the Queen’s business. Unlike the horseshoe-shaped consensus parliaments of Continental European, which reformers here exalt, our House of Commons consists of two sides; to the Speaker’s right sits the Ministry and government backbenchers, and to his left sits the opposition, the largest party of which acts as the government-in-waiting. As Peter Hitchens argues:

The electoral system is not there for the good of the parties, but for the good of the country. It has two irreplaceable and unique characteristics. The first is that it provides strong government, constantly challenged by a vigilant and ambitious opposition. The next is that it allows the people, when enraged or otherwise disappointed by a bad government, to turn it out completely.

In short, single-member plurality is for the good of the country; the in contrast, proportional systems serve political parties themselves, particularly small irrelevant parties like the Greens which exist only in the hope of achieving what Pepall calls a grossly disproportionate “imbalance of power” in hung parliaments by suspending itself like the Sword of Damocles over the government’s head and extorting absurd demands from it in order to cater to the narrowest slices of the electorate. Under mixed-member proportional, we could no longer say that we elect members of parliament alone; instead, with one ballot, we would elect some members, and on another we would elect parties instead, but not the lists that determine the order in which parties fill up their quotas or the proportional seats distributed in order to match their share of seats with their seat of the popular vote. Proportional representation — whether pure or mixed-member proportional — springs from the false and presumed premise that the House of Commons exists to support parties, when in fact parties evolved in order to support ministries that could successfully carry out the Queen’s business and sustain their parliamentary majorities. Political parties aggregate interests and exist in order to form government, and being in government is about taking responsibility for acts of the Crown and making decisions. Governing is about making decisions to the exclusive of all others; it is not about making multiple decisions in proportion to the share of votes that different parties and their platforms won in the previous general election. Ultimately, this is why the people as a whole — the constituent body of the realm — will invariably be unhappy or dissatisfied with what the government of the day does. As Pepall says, “to govern is to choose.””

It is nothing short of staggering that this voting reform movement in Canada occurs at exactly the same time that we have before us a spectacular exhibition in Europe of the systematic weaknesses of various alternatives to ‘first past the post’.

“… Americans, both left and right, are ill informed when it comes to their leaders. Most Americans would be horrified to learn that many of the neoconservatives behind America’s permanent war culture learned their trade under the tutelage of RAND military analyst Albert Wohlstetter, a follower of Leon Trotsky, the leader of the Red Army and a close compatriot to Vladimir Lenin during the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917.

Wohlstetter was one of the many godfathers of the neoconservative political movement. Over the course of 30 years he moved seamlessly from Communism to Capitalism and between Republicans and Democrats, even secretly misadvising John F. Kennedy’s Presidential campaign about a “bomber gap” that didn’t exist. In the process he helped to shift American political and military thinking toward permanent war by applying the political philosophy of none other than Leon Trotsky.

Americans would have to reexamine every assumption they have about their political system when they realize the core, flag-waving architects of Ronald Reagan’s New Right were Trotskyites. Trump: Right on 9/11 and Iraq War
February 15, 2016
At the Republican debate on Saturday, Donald Trump attacked the George W. Bush administration on its claims justifying the Iraq invasion. He said: “They lied. They said there were weapons of mass destruction. There were none. And they knew there were none. There were no weapons of mass destruction. (BOOING).”
Trump also attacked the notion — articulated by Jeb Bush, Marco Rubio and others that George W. Bush “kept us safe.” Said Trump: “How did he keep us safe when the World Trade Center … The World Trade Center came down (BOOING) during [Bush’s] reign. He kept us safe? That’s not safe.”
COLEEN ROWLEY, rowleyclan at earthlink.net, @ColeenRowley
Rowley, a former FBI special agent and division counsel whose May 2002 memo to the FBI Director exposed some of the FBI’s pre-9/11 failures — was named one of TIME magazine’s “Persons of the Year” in 2002. Her pieces include “Ten Years After Iraq.”
She said today: “On the specific issue of the Bush administration’s 9/11 and Iraq ‘blunders,’ Donald Trump is absolutely telling the truth even though he may not be politically correct vis a vis the other Republican candidates. If George Bush ‘kept us safe,’ as his brother claims, there’s also a bridge for sale in Brooklyn. Trump is right to point out how senior officials of the Bush administration enabled and let the worst terrorist attacks occur even though there was so much information flowing into intelligence agencies during the Spring and Summer of 2001 that the Director of Central Intelligence and other counterterrorism officials like Richard Clarke were said to have ‘their hair on fire’ they were so concerned and desperately, but unsuccessfully, trying to get the Bush administration to pay attention. Even the 9/11 Commission and other official investigations characterized the system as ‘blinking red’ and characterized the failure as one of ‘failing to connect the dots.’
“For Bush to have seized on the neoconservatives’ dream of a ‘new Pearl Harbor,’ and turned his administration’s massive failure into a deceitful argument to launch war on Iraq, a country that had nothing to do with 9/11 and even served as a secular bulwark against the Saudis’ Wahabi-style terrorism, is the epitome of a foreign policy blunder that only continues to magnify in disastrous blowback.”
STEPHEN ZUNES, zunes at usfca.edu, @SZunes
Zunes is a professor of politics & coordinator of Middle Eastern Studies at the University of San Francisco. He argues that Trump’s attack on the Iraq war was largely correct — and notes that the reaction of other Republican presidential candidates were filled with the same sorts of deceits that surrounded the invasion. Marco Rubio for example claimed that “Saddam Hussein was in violation of UN resolutions, in open violation, and the world wouldn’t do anything about it.” Zunes notes that Iraq was in fact complying with UN resolutions, including with the disarmament regime, when G. W. Bush decided to end the inspections and start the “shock and awe” bombing campaign and invasion. See his pieces: “Hillary the Hawk,” and “Iraq: Remembering Those Responsible.”
Also see: “Face It: Trump is Right About Iraq — and that Should Sink Clinton,” by Sam Husseini: “What’s it going to look like if Trump is the Republican nominee? If Clinton is the Democratic nominee, Trump — with very good reason — will tie the stench of perpetual wars and the lies that accompany them around her neck. She will make the 2004 John ‘I-was-for-the-war-before-I-was-against-it’ Kerry look like a stirring exemplar of gracefully articulated principles.”

The release last week of video footage taken from the cellphone of a

on January 26.

The video, which was released by the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office

According to an affidavit from an Ingham County detective, Dunnings

It was freezing cold outside — so cold that you wanted to wrap the
stiff banner material around your hands for a little warmth. We —
members of Witness Against Torture — were standing outside a Camden,
New Jersey courthouse in early January to support the Duka brothers,
three Albanian-American men who are now serving life sentences after
being found guilty of conspiracy to commit terrorism and other charges
in December 2008. Our banners said, “Innocent until proven Muslim” and
“Islamophobia convicted the Duka brothers — Free them now.” Many
believe the men are categorically innocent, and — on that cold day in
January — they were finally getting a chance to present a motion for a
retrial based on incompetent representation. Family and friends of the
brothers crowded the courtroom, craning to glimpse their loved ones.

As the judge in the Duka brothers case considers the motion and
prepares to deliver a ruling later this week, there’s another trial
from Camden’s past that may offer a small ray of hope. More than 40
years ago, in the spring of 1973 — in the same courthouse (in the same
court room even) — 28 women and men stood trial. They were the Camden

Bernie Sanders Lays Out His Requirements For Endorsing Hillary Clinton

Posted on March 25, 2016 by willyloman

(And here you have it folks. This is how they get (Jeb Bush) Hillary Clinton “elected” to the highest office in the land when she is considered one of the least trustworthy candidates in the running and when so few of her own party constituents want her to win. You get the ebil Donald “Crazyman” Trump to run on the right as the nightmare option to vote against … and Bernie “Lovable Grandpa” Sanders to herd the disenfranchised flock back into the corporatist neoliberal New Dem pen: a wholly owned subsidiary of Clinton Inc. Sanders is certainly intelligent enough to know any promise Killary makes will be broken as soon as she is in office. Yet here he is, already talking about endorsing the war-mongering criminal when he finally drops out of the race. You Bernie fans get ready to feel the burn, cus it’s coming.)

from the Huffington Post
Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) insisted he’ll stay in the presidential race, but outlined conditions under which he would endorse Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton “if I can’t make it.”

Sanders, who badly trails Clinton in delegates for the Democratic nomination, said Wednesday that his chief priorities include making sure the party embraces his anti-establishment platform and expands its base.

“If I can’t make it — and we’re going to try as hard as we can until the last vote is cast — we want to completely revitalize the Democratic Party and make it a party of the people rather than one of large campaign contributors,” Sanders said in an interview on the progressive Web show “The Young Turks.”

Sanders also listed policy demands he would make of Clinton, including a single-payer health care system, a $15 an hour minimum wage, tougher regulation of the finance industry, closing corporate tax loopholes and “a vigorous effort to address climate change.”

Cloak and Gown: Scholars in the Secret War, Robin Winks, William Morrow and Co., New York 1991 is a book I read and from which I excerpted eighty pages of material when developing “Mosaica”, a long series for a previous blog with a thesis that the goal and intent of apparently opposite energies and theories of socialism, communism, fascism and capitalism may be pushing us all in the same direction.

Page 282 of Winks specifically mentions planting lies–“whispers,” or “sibs”.

Ted Cruz called a tabloid story of alleged extramarital affairs “utter lies” and blamed Donald Trump “henchmen” for pushing the story.

“The actual story—which is not online, but which Gawker has obtained a copy of—does not name any of the women with whom Cruz purportedly was involved. Descriptions are given for each, however, and at least one should sound very familiar to folks who have been following this election” [Gawker].

“Inside Trump’s plot to thwart a contested convention and seize control of the GOP” [WaPo]. There’s an awful lot of 11-dimensional chess going on here, and I have the feeling none of the players are much good.

“Donald Trump beat Sen. Ted Cruz earlier this month in Louisiana’s Republican presidential primary by 3.6 percentage points, but the Texan may wind up with as many as 10 more delegates from the state than the businessman” [Wall Street Journal, “Ted Cruz Gains in Louisiana After Loss There to Donald Trump”].

Gene Smith’s “Lysistratic Non-Action” tactic proposed against Trump [New York Magazine].

“The John R. Kasich of 2016 is a much mellower politician than the hard-charging congressman of the 1990s, who could be so difficult that House Speaker Newt Gingrich, never known for his diplomacy, offered Mr. Kasich firm advice about his tendency to bulldoze colleagues” [New York Times]. Gingrich mellows out Kasich. What a year this has been…

“Both Clinton and Sanders are starting to beat Trump by a lot” (with many charts) [Philip Bump, WaPo].

Warren on Sanders: “‘He’s out there. He fights from the heart. This is who Bernie is. He has put the right issues on the table both for the Democratic Party and for the country in general so I’m still cheering Bernie on” [Politico].

“An Open Letter to Dolores Huerta” [HuffPo]. “[W]hy your article on Bernie Sanders came as such a surprise to me — that the same woman who has made it her life’s mission to speak the truth and shed light on corruption, lies, and false narratives created by the corporate elite and special interest groups, would now suddenly create a narrative that distorts facts and misguides American voters.”

“Common Arguments from Prominent Hillary Clinton Supporters Debunked” [HuffPo]. More analytical than the headline.

FBI Trying to Sneak In Ability to Access Emails Without Court Order
An attempt to secretly expand what can be gathered with National Security Letters
May. 26, 2016 4:55 pm

http://reason.com/blog/2016/05/26/fbi-t ... -to-access" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Right now Congress is attempting to hammer out rules that would eliminate an old loophole that permits the government and law enforcement to get access to Americans' old emails with a simple court subpoena instead of a warrant.

But at the same time, the FBI is trying to write up special new rules that would let them use a National Security Letter (NSL) to get access to email records without any sort of court order.

NSLs are secret orders that allow the government under the PATRIOT Act to not just demand data from Internet and telecom companies about specific users but also to legally gag these companies from communicating any information about their existence. Currently, NSLs can get all sorts of information and metadata (like phone records) that way, but not emails. The 2017 Intelligence Authorization Act would change the rules. Senate Intelligence Committee leaders Richard Burr (R-N.C.) and Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), originators of proposed encryption legislation that would utterly destroy everybody's cybersecurity, put out a statement in support of the legislation, which passed a committee vote.

There was one dissenter, Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) who has been the primary voice in that committee against unwarranted surveillance. CNet takes note of his response and warning:

But Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.), the lone dissenting voice on the 15-member Senate committee, vowed to work on reversing the "dangerous provisions."

"This bill takes a hatchet to important protections for Americans' liberty," he said in a statement. "This bill would mean more government surveillance of Americans, less due process and less independent oversight of US intelligence agencies. Worse, neither the intelligence agencies, nor the bill's sponsors have shown any evidence that these changes would do anything to make Americans more secure."

Jenna McLaughlin at The Intercept has more about the FBI's lengthy efforts to try to use NSLs to secretly access email communications here.

Note that the FBI is now taking some hits by judges over its insistence on secrecy. Yesterday a federal judge tossed out evidence the FBI had collected in a child pornography case because they refused to reveal to the defense the tools that they had used to exploit Tor to track pedophiles, even if that information was kept

NYPD cops must report use of force to public under bill passed
Thursday, July 14, 2016, 5:04 PM

“No one intimidates me into the decisions I make. No one forces me to take a position,” said Mark-Viverito, who critics have accused of backroom dealing with Police Commissioner Bill Bratton to kill the bills. (COREY SIPKIN/NEW YORK DAILY NEWS)
Amid controversy over a decision to block two controversial police reform bills, the City Council approved more limited legislation Thursday to require cops to report publicly on use of force.

Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito remained on the defensive over her decision not to allow a vote on the Right to Know Act, which would have required cops to inform citizens they have a right to refuse certain searches, get proof of their consent, and identify themselves in encounters with New Yorkers.

“No one intimidates me into the decisions I make. No one forces me to take a position,” said Mark-Viverito, who critics have accused of backroom dealing with Police Commissioner Bill Bratton to kill the bills. “Anyone that wants to imply otherwise is just straight up wrong.”

Mark-Viverito announced this week that instead of the Council voting on the legislation, the NYPD would make internal changes directing cops to ask subjects if they consent to searches, and give out business cards in some encounters.

NYPD will track incidents of officers using force
Under the trio of bills passed Thursday, cops will be required to put out public reports four times a year detailing use of force incidents, what kind of force is used, the precincts where they happen, and injuries to civilians and cops.

They’ll also have to break down use of force by the offense that caused a cop to stop someone in the first place, and report on the precincts where cops have drawn the most civilian complaints and lawsuits.

Critics say while the added transparency is a good thing, it won’t do much on its own.

“The scary thing is it seems like the city that we’re living in, the commissioner has veto power over the City Council. And his ability to reject an

Feds Must Search for Records on Judge Spying

http://www.courthousenews.com/2016/07/1 ... spying.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

A government agency won no mercy in pointing to a crushing backlog of Freedom of Information Act requests to duck a reporter investigating the surveillance of judges.
Vice News reporter Jason Leopold, formerly with Al-Jazeera America, filed two Freedom of Information Act, or FOIA, requests in March 2014, regarding National Security Agency and FBI "surveillance of federal and state judges."
But the agency and the Justice Department's Office of Legal Counsel, OLC for short, sought summary judgment and dismissal, arguing they had no such records.
U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan rejected that claim last July, finding the government's search inadequate "on a small number of issues," and that it inadequately explained its reasoning.
The judge ordered the NSA and FBI to conduct two additional searches and give Leopold certain other information, such as memoranda and legal opinions, including drafts and final edits.
The agencies claim they found no such records before the court's additional order.
"The fact that no final legal advice on this subject was located . . . made it much more difficult to identify any likely locations to search for any draft legal advice that might exist," OLC Special Counsel Paul Colborn claimed.
The office nonetheless ultimately asked two of its senior attorneys with long tenures and close familiarity with its work on national security and surveillance matters if they knew of any classified or unclassified projects on the propriety of surveilling federal or state judges.
Yet no responsive records turned up, according to the office.
A general inquiry sent to all office attorneys also yielded no results, OLC claims.
Searching the office's paper files and departed attorneys' emails and hard drives "likely would take several years and the diversion of resources from other FOIA requests," Colborn said.
But Judge Chutkan refused to award the government summary judgment Monday, finding that simply asking two senior office attorneys did not amount to conducting a full search under FOIA.
"OLC employs approximately 20 to 25 attorneys at any one time, and Colborn 'conservatively estimates that more than 300 attorneys have worked in the office during the time period since 1933, the period of plaintiff's proposed search," according to her ruling.
Chutkan held that "merely asking these two individuals about their personal knowledge does not, in the court's view, sufficiently demonstrate that responsive documents do not exist or would not be found by a more in-depth search."
The judge later added, "The same holds true for asking all current OLC attorneys about whether they knew of responsive documents, as such documents could have been generated, unbeknownst to any current OLC attorneys, by an attorney who is no longer there, or by any of the hundreds of attorneys who worked at the agency before them."
Yet the court will not require the office to ask its current attorneys to search their computers and emails for responsive documents, the ruling states.
"Based on Colborn's representations, the court finds that requiring OLC to manually open, one-by-one, over 160,000 files from over 100 OLC attorneys and staff members and then search the full text of each file individually would be unduly burdensome," Chutkan wrote.
The office must, however, search the email files of departed attorneys, which won't take as long as searching paper files and hard drives, the ruling states.
"While Colborn avers that it 'likely would take several years and the diversion of resources from other FOIA requests' to search for responsive documents among OLC's paper files, hard drives and emails, he does not break out the time and resources that would be required to search only the emails of departed OLC attorneys," Chutkan wrote.
The emails and their attachments can easily be searched using an eDiscovery tool without needing to open each email and its attachments individually, according to the ruling.
Leopold's D.C.-based attorney, Jeffrey Light, said, "Hopefully this latest order will be t

FBI Targets Black Lives Matter Activists… Again

Last week, the FBI field office in New Orleans issued an alert to law enforcement in Louisiana with the inflammatory headline, “Violence Against Law Enforcement Officers and Riots Planned for 8-10 July,” claiming protests against the killing of Alton Sterling would be violent. The sources for the intelligence were unnamed social media posts, which had not been vetted for credibility. But the alert prompted the Baton Rouge police department to crack down on Black Lives Matter protests.
More than 100 peaceful protesters were arrested by police on Saturday. Police repeatedly swept into the crowd like a paramilitary force dressed as robots, giving no audible instructions and snatching people for arrest. More were arrested on Sunday by police who moved in wearing riot gear and plastic face masks, and banged their batons against riot shields in threatening unison.
By 12am on Sunday, July 10, the city was under a virtual lockdown. Businesses closed down early in response to the police actions in the streets.
Mara Verheyden-Hilliard, Alternet
The crackdown was so vicious that four groups: North Baton Rouge Matters; Black Youth Project 100; New Orleans Workers’ Center for Racial Justice; American Civil Liberties Union of Louisiana; and the Louisiana Chapter of the National Lawyers Guild, are suing the Baton Rouge police department, asking for an immediate restraining order.
But the FBI was not named in the lawsuit. The agency is free to continue to throw fuel on the fire and stoke distrust and fear of the Black Lives Matter movement by any means necessary.
Under the guise of “community outreach, the FBI is harassing activists before the Republican National Convention in Cleveland. The Dissent NewsWire reported on visits the FBI made in June, now Washington Post reports that in the last several days, the FBI has been visiting prominent Black Lives Matter activists around the US and questioning them about their plans for the upcoming convention. Activists have been visited by the FBI in Cleveland, San Francisco, New York, Minneapolis, and St. Louis. In some cases, the FBI agents have told activists point blank not to go to Cleveland.
Many Black Lives Matter activists have taken to social media to detail their encounters with the FBI. Samuel Sinyangwe, an organizer with Campaign Zero, described on social media how an FBI agent visited his home in New York City. According, to Sinyangwe he received a call from a blocked number. The caller on the other end was an FBI agent, who had tried to visit Sinyangwe at home only to discover he was out. Even though Sinyangwe’s apartment complex requires a key card to enter, the agent was able to get inside the building and slip a business card under his door. According to Sinyangwe, the agent first asked him if he had plans to go to Cleveland and then proceeded to warn him against going. The agent also requested to meet in person with Sinyangwe. Sinyangwe told his followers over Twitter, “ But the fact that the FBI is discouraging protesters from attending is unacceptable. And their tactics were classic intimidation.”
The Post article was published the same day that President Barack Obama hosted a summit on police reform that included some activists associated with Black Lives Matter. DeRay Mckesson, himself arrested during protests in Baton Rouge, reportedly raised the issue of FBI intimidation of activists with Obama. Yet, the FBI under Obama has so far continued to do what it has always done–spy on and harass activists.
Obama’s presidency has witnessed FBI surveillance and infiltration of Occupy Wall Street, anti-NATO protests, the Freedom Road Socialist Organization and increased infiltration of Muslim communities. The FBI has also increased its attempts to entrap activists, concocting fake plots and then enticing individuals to participate in them. After the individuals agree to participate in the FBI designed plot, they are arrested and jailed. Obama has shown little interest in seeing that the FBI respects the First Amendment.
However, the problem is not just any one president or party. The FBI’s patterns and practices have been at odds with the First Amendment since its very inception. While activists should not be surprised that the FBI is attempting to intimidate Black Lives Matter activist, they should not accept this behavior. Social movements in the past have put the government on the defensive and forced some reforms onto the surveillance state. That is why BORDC/DDF has brought together over sixty groups and thousands of activists to call on Congress to investigate the FBI.

Former Federal Agents Urge Supreme Court to Hear Case Involving FBI Torture

Torture
By Molly Wooldridge

Last Wednesday, three former federal agents from the FBI and NCIS urged the Supreme Court to take up the case of Meshal v. Higgenbotham and to overturn a lower court’s refusal to hear Meshal’s claims on the merits because of a new judge-made exception for national security cases.

Nearly a decade ago Amir Meshal, a U.S. citizen, says he was studying in Somalia when hostilities broke out. Fearing for his safety, Meshal fled to neighboring Kenya where he was arrested and subsequently detained. Over the next four months, U.S. FBI agents tortured and interrogated him while detaining Meshal in several east African countries without access to a lawyer. Meshal was subsequently released and never charged with a crime.

Soon after he was permitted to return home, Meshal filed a civil suit against the FBI supervising special agent, Chris Higgenbotham, and three other U.S. government officials for violations of his right to due process and his right to be free from unreasonable seizure. However, the U.S. Court of Appeals did not rule on the merits of whether Meshal’s constitutional rights were violated. Rather, it decided that Meshal has no remedy for violations that occurred overseas and in the context of a terrorism investigation.

Ordinarily a victim may bring what is known as a Bivens action, named after a 1971 Supreme Court decision, to obtain monetary damages against federal government officials who have violated his or her constitutional

One way to curb police brutality that no one is talking about
By Danielle Paquette July 14 at 2:22 PM

Investigators work at the scene of a police involved shooting on July 6, 2016, in Falcon Heights, Minn
Former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee declared on Fox News last weekend that the majority of people killed by police are white — a misleading claim, considering a disproportionate number of unarmed black people die in officer-involved shootings. So he added a new layer to his argument Monday, one that drew quite a bit of Internet mockery:

“The pure facts also reveal that 94 percent of those killed by police are men,” he said in an email to the Post’s Fact Checker, “so by your ‘proportional’ standards, the real movement in America should be ‘Male Lives Matter.'”

Considering Huckabee’s insistence that “all lives matter,” it’s unlikely he truly wants to shift the conversation to gender. The obvious fallacy: The men he speaks of are mostly killed by men.

Law enforcement remains one of the least gender-diverse professions in the United States — and that could be a major factor in the questionable shootings and excessive force complaints against police. Female officers have fewer of these problems than their male colleagues, which could make gender diversity a key to addressing the breakdown in the relationship between the nation's police and the community.

Studies have found female officers tend to place more importance on de-escalation and community trust building. “Female officers are better at defusing potentially violent confrontations before those encounters turn deadly,” wrote Katherine Spillar, executive director of the Feminist Majority Foundation, in an essay for The Washington Post last year.

[How more female police officers would help stop police brutality]

Women on the force also appear to be more inclined to call out their colleagues for shady behavior. A 1994 study of 861 officers in Illinois — 96 percent of which were men — found the small band of women were more likely to report spotting unethical actions by fellow officers.

Male police officers, meanwhile, are disproportionately more

As a quick reminder, TWA Flight 800 blew up off the coast of Long Island on July 17, 1996. A few weeks ago, I received an email from a fellow that, in a fairer world, would have been newsworthy in itself. Joe Johnson worked with the FBI missile team on the investigation as an industry partner. He concluded his initial email with the compelling line, “It would be better if we had a chat on the phone. I can prove that it was a missile.”
In the course of our subsequent conversations, Johnson laid out the evidence to support a missile strike: the motion correction for small guidance errors, the smooth turn toward the target at intercept, the resistance of Jet A fuel to a spark, and for Johnson, most significantly, the radar data that showed “debris exiting the aircraft at a supersonic velocity.” In the excellent 2103 documentary, TWA Flight 800, physicist Tom Stalcup considered that radar data “the smoking gun.”
Johnson also added a bit of information that may prove more valuable in the long run, that is the likely identity of the FBI agent who boldly resisted the CIA’s attempt to corrupt the investigation. In my book, I called this otherwise anonymous missile team member “Lewis Erskine” after the character Efrem Zimbalist Jr. played on the hit TV show, The F.B.I.
Johnson worked directly with a member of the FBI missile team named Steve Bongardt and vouched for his integrity. At the time of the confrontation with the CIA in April 1997 the missile team had only two members. Based on his future performance, Bongardt, a former U.S. Navy aviator and Naval Academy grad, would seem the more likely of the two to have defied the CIA analysts. As Bongardt says of himself on his LinkedIn page, “His efforts to fight the FBI and CIA bureaucracy in the days leading up to 9/11, in order to pursue one of the 9/11 hijackers, has been documented in the public media.”
Bongardt does not overstate his role. In 2006, the year after Bongardt stepped down from the FBI, noted author Lawrence Wright wrote an extensive piece in the New Yorker highlighting Bongardt’s exploits subtitled “Did the C.I.A. stop an F.B.I. detective from preventing 9/11?”
In the summer of 2001, Bongardt became aware that known terrorist Khaled al-Mihdhar was in the United States. Citing the “wall” that allegedly prevented intelligence gatherers from cooperating with criminal investigators, FBI headquarters informed Bongardt that none of its

Ellicott City Flood — 1,000 Year Event Looks a Lot Like One of the Rain Bombs of Climate Change
We live in a strange new world, one in which the familiar is all mixed up with the radically altered. Such was the case this weekend when a weather pattern that was pretty normal for summer spawned a single thunderstorm that produced a once-in-a-thousand-years flood event in Ellicott City.

Normal Weekend, Typical Weather Pattern, Abnormal Conditions

On Saturday, my wife and I readied to trek out to Shenandoah National Park for a happily-anticipated summer camping trip. As we headed out the door, the weather pattern looked mostly normal for summer, if a little stormy. A high-pressure system out over the ocean was pulling in moisture off its waters and drawing warm air up from the south. A low over western Pennsylvania and a warm frontal boundary over Maryland created instability in a big zone of convection from Northern Virginia on through to Connecticut. Overall, it was a pretty typical pattern that would probably have produced some moderate-to-strong late-afternoon thunderstorms back in the 20th century. Back then, it was far less likely that a similar pattern would have produced a 1,000 year flood event.

(Extremely warm sea surface temperatures on the weekend of July 30-31 helped to fuel the record rainfall event over Elicott City, Maryland. Sea surface temperature anomaly map provided by: Earth Nullschool.)

However, conditions were not normal, not the same as they were back during a time when human fossil-fuel emissions hadn’t forced the world to warm by 1.2 degrees Celsius above 1880s levels. In the new world in 2016, the ocean high-pressure system was circulating over record warm sea surfaces that were 3-5 C hotter than late 20th-century averages. And because of this, the ocean was bleeding off a whole hell of a lot more moisture than it typically would. Any storms that fired in that very wet air mass would, as a result, tend to pump out a lot more rain than is typical.

A Wet Atmosphere Crackling with Unusual Energy

As my wife and I made our way toward the Blue Ridge Mountains and down Interstate 66 and Route 211, large, energetic cumulus clouds sprouted all around us. Wafted in the hot, unstable air, many tops punched up through the troposphere, spreading out into the characteristic anvil shapes of thunderstorms.

Light streamed down between these big, wet beasts. For a while, as we made our way up to the campground, set up our gear, and took a hike along a local rock scramble, we were fortunate — able to enjoy our day despite the loud rumbles and roars of thunder echoing up from the valleys or off the nearby mountainsides in the steamy, moisture-choked air.

(A massive amount of atmospheric moisture fueled powerful thunderstorms on Saturday, July 30 from the Appalachians of northwestern Virginia to the Baltimore City region. One of these storms dumped more than 4.5 inches of rain on Ellicott City, Maryland Saturday in just one hour. Image source: Terp Weather.)

At about 3,000 feet in elevation, these conditions were a bit odd for Shenandoah National Park which typically experiences milder weather. Temperatures were around 80 degrees Fahrenheit (about 5-6 F hotter than average), and the level of atmospheric moist

Shooter Omar Mateen's Allegations of Racial Harrassment by Police Co-Workers
Islamophobic workplace intimidation figures into the background of another mass shooter conveniently painted as a jihadist.

August 1, 2016

The ongoing intrigue surrounding Omar Mateen and his massacre of 47 patrons of the Pulse Nightclub in Orlando, Florida was drowned out by the political circus of two party conventions this month. The personal details about Mateen, from his vicious abuse of his first wife to credible accounts of a secret gay life to the reports of his mental instability and the autopsy results confirming him as a heavy abuser of steroids, have been forgotten or apparently suppressed by the FBI. Taken together, these elements of Mateen's person profile directly contradicted the popular portrayal of the mass killer as an Islamic extremist acting in the name of ISIS. Unsurprisingly, they have fallen down the Orwellian memory hole.

As the facts that could have interrupted the official narrative fell by the wayside, Congress and state legislatures exploited the tragedy to push for an expansion of undemocratic databases of “terror” suspects and the discriminatory no-fly list. As Sarah Lazare reported for AlterNet, police departments across the country have been leveraging the attack to lobby for expanded arsenals of military gear. At both Republican and Democratic conventions, Orlando has been invoked to summon fears

Major Physics Magazine, Europhysics News, Publishes 9/11 Article by Steven Jones, Robert Korol, Tony Szamboti, and Ted Walter
Read It Now! >> http://www.europhysicsnews.org/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Earlier this week, the magazine of the European Physical Society, Europhysics News, published a 3,000-word feature article by Dr. Steven Jones, Dr. Robert Korol, Tony Szamboti, and Ted Walter, entitled 15 years later: on the physics of high-rise building collapses.
Europhysics News bills itself as the magazine of the European physics community. That sounds about right — given their circulation of around 25,000 copies per issue!
It is with great enthusiasm that we invite you to read the online version of the article, which can be accessed for free at EurophysicsNews.org. The hard copy will be distributed to the magazine’s 25,000 subscribers in mid-September.
60,000 and Counting!
That brings to a staggering 60,000 the number of engineers and scientists who will be exposed to our literature in the coming weeks — 35,000 who will receive a copy of World Trade Center Physics and 25,000 who will receive the current issue of Europhysics News.
You can help grow that number by purchasing copies of World Trade Center Physics in bulk — virtually at cost — and distributing them on your own, either by popping them in the mail or by handing them out.
Nearly 2,500 copies have been sold since World Trade Center Physics went on sale two days ago. We’ve got 7,500 left in stock waiting to be distributed around the 15th anniversary of 9/11.
Place your bulk order by Monday, August 29,  http://www.shop.ae911truth.org/WTC-Phys ... er_c25.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;   and you’ll receive the package by Saturday, September 10 (this applies to U.S. residents only).

PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION
NOVEMBER 30, 2016 | CRAIG WOLFF. RUSS BAKER. KLAUS MARRE AND CAMERON BREN
PUBLIC MUST DEMAND WI HAND RECOUNT AFTER JUDGE UNABLE TO ORDER IT
A Flawed Recount for a Flawed Election?

By Craig Wolff, Russ Baker, Klaus Marre – and Cameron Bren in Madison, WI

The recount in Wisconsin is set to begin Thursday, but election integrity experts say the only way it will reliably reveal foul play is if all ballots are counted by hand. However, in a hastily-arranged hearing late Tuesday night, a judge, while agreeing that a manual recount is preferable, rejected a lawsuit by Green Party presidential candidate Jill Stein that would have required such a manual recount. She based her decision in part on a state law pushed by Republicans that leaves decisions on recount methods up to the counties. The judge also said she did not see solid proof of miscounts that would alter the election.

“I understand that it is extremely important to the people of the state of Wisconsin,” said Dane County Circuit Judge Valerie Bailey-Rihn. “I understand that it is extremely important to the nation, but I must follow the law… and I just do not find clear and convincing evidence.”

The judge noted that “a recount isn’t a threat,” adding “instead, it should be an affirmation of the democratic process and I think we can all agree that a hand recount is the gold standard, it is the best we can do. I don’t think there is any dispute to that.”

Attorneys representing the Jill Stein campaign, Matthew D Brinckerhoff and Debbie Greenberger, argued that the state could easily do a hand recount by the federal deadline of Dec. 13. Of the 72 counties in Wisconsin 19 have reported wards that want to use the tabulating equipment rather than hand count. The largest county, Milwaukee, and fourth largest, Brown are included in those. Dane County, the second most populous, is hand counting and expects to be finished on time.

After initially keeping its distance from the recount, Hillary Clinton’s campaign now appears to have fully joined the fight. Attorneys for Clinton joined Stein’s after filing Tuesday to intervene in support of the hand count. Clinton’s attorneys pointed out how in 2010 Minnesota had been able to conclude a statewide hand recount of the governor’s race in five days.

***

Most counties in Wisconsin use optical scan voting machines. Voters fill out their ballots, which are then scanned and preserved. Experts warn, however, that simply repeating that scanning process would not tell election officials whether the machines had been hacked. That could only be determined by a manual count of the ballots themselves. This process would also get a more accurate result with regard to ballots that had not been filled out correctly, e.g., if a voter used a checkmark instead of filling in the bubble next to the candidate’s name.

In an affidavit accompanying Stein’s recount petition, J. Eric Halderman, a professor of computer science and engineering and director of the Center for Computer Security and Society at the University of Michigan, noted that this year’s election was “subject to unprecedented cyberattacks apparently intended to interfere with the election.” Halderman described how a hacker could manipulate a voting machine and noted that Wisconsin is one of several states using outdated equipment.

“The only way to determine whether a cyberattack affected the outcome of the 2016 presidential election is to examine the physical evidence — that is, to count the paper ballots and paper audit trail records, and review the voting equipment, to ensure that the votes cast by actual voters match the results determined by the computers,” Halderman stated. “For ballots cast through optical scanners, a manual recount of the paper ballots, without relying on the electronic equipment, must occur.”

On Tuesday evening, Halderman stressed that if the election using optical scanners was flawed, then a recount using the same process would be flawed as well.

“The same vulnerabilities that were present on election day continue to exist in the voting machines because they are the same technology, the same model and for that reason the machines are just as subject to hacking now as they would have been prior to the election,” Halderman testified.

Judge Bailey-Rihn encouraged counties to use a hand count even though she could not mandate them to do so.

“I’m going to allow the 19 counties to do the recount the way that they intended,” Bailey-Rihn said in closing, “Again, I think everybody would strongly encourage them to do the hand recount but it is their decision.

Experts supporting Stein’s lawsuit believe that allowing some counties to use anything other than a hand recount would taint the process.

“If the paper records have been preserved intact, checking the electronic results against manual inspection of the underlying paper records can reveal tabulation and aggregation errors of all kinds, even if the software has bugs or has been hacked,” said Philip Stark, associate dean of Mathematical and Physical Sciences and director of the Statistical Computing Facility at the University of California, Berkeley, in an affidavit supporting the lawsuit.

“In contrast, the original result and the result obtained by rescanning and retabulation could both be wrong,” Stark added. “Rescanning and retabulating without checking the electronic data against the original paper records cannot confirm that the reported result is correct.”

The Wisconsin Elections Commission (WEC) had said in a unanimous decision that it is up to each county to decide whether it wants to conduct a manual recount or just re-scan the ballots.

A Wisconsin elections integrity expert told WhoWhatWhy that most counties are expected to conduct a hand count and have been encouraged to do so by WEC.

Counting an individual race by hand is not as difficult as it might sound, the Wisconsin expert said. To do a machine count, however, is more difficult because the voting machines have to be reprogrammed so that they only count the presidential race. By law, it is forbidden to recount the other races as well.

These voting machines are similar to cell phones in that they have some software built in, which election officials don’t touch, while other programming is configured before use in an election. Prior to the recount, local officials would have to do the reprogramming, or the task would be delegated to someone sent by either the machine’s manufacturer or a hired support company. The new program would then have to be tested before the ballots could be scanned individually.

As a result, it does seem easier to count ballots by hand — if perhaps somewhat more labor-intensive for elections workers. But Stein is already agreeing to pay for their efforts. It will be interesting to hear the justifications by county officials who decide against that option. One reason, of course, would be to cover up election fraud — or embarrassing errors.

In the end, public clamor for hand recounts may prove decisive.

FBI coughs up new 9/11 records about Sarasota; Documents, evidence missing

New York’s World Trade Center before September 11, 2001
Newly released FBI documents say agents investigating 9/11 connections did not obtain security records from a Sarasota-area gated community containing alleged evidence that 9/11 hijackers had visited the residence of a Saudi family with ties to the royal family.

The FBI’s surprising assertion that agents chose not to collect basic evidence during its once-secret Sarasota investigation is contained in a previously classified “Memorandum for the Record” about an FBI briefing given to the 9/11 Review Commission on April 30, 2014.

Former Sen. Bob Graham, D-FL, co-chair of Congress’s Joint Inquiry into the 9/11 terrorist attacks, called the FBI’s statement “stunning.”

The memorandum also fails to explain, as the commission’s final report suggested it would, the basis for FBI statements made to the 9/11 Review Commission that sought to discredit an April 2002 FBI report that – contrary to the FBI’s public comments – said agents found “many connections” between the Sarasota Saudis and “individuals associated with the terrorist attacks on 9/11/2001.”

A heavily censored copy of the four-page Memorandum for the Record is among more than 200 pages of declassified 9/11 Review Commission records released to FloridaBulldog.org this month by the FBI amid ongoing Freedom of Information litigation.

The Review Commission was authorized by Congress to conduct an “external review” of the FBI’s post 9/11 performance and to evaluate new evidence, but was largely controlled by the FBI. Its three members, all of whom were paid by the FBI, included former Reagan-era Attorney General Ed Meese.

New questions about Review Commission

The Review Commission operated in secret for about a year and went out of business when it issued its final report in March 2015. The memo, cited in the report’s footnotes, raises new questions about whether the commission made an actual, thorough review of what happened in Sarasota or simply accepted the FBI’s assertions.

“It’s somewhere between just blind acceptance of whatever the FBI put before them and the failure of the FBI to disclose other information not in this memo,” said Graham.

Florida driver’s license photo of Mohamed Atta
The FBI’s Sarasota investigation began shortly after the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks when neighbors in the upscale Prestancia development alerted law enforcement to the abrupt departure of Abdulaziz al-Hijji and his wife, Anoud, who moved out of their home at 4224 Escondito Circle about two weeks before 9/11. The couple left numerous personal belongings, including their cars, clothes, furniture and a refrigerator full of food.

The home was owned by al-Hijji’s father-in-law, Esam Ghazzawi, an advisor to the late Prince Fahd bin Salman bin Abdulaziz al Saud, a nephew of former King Fahd, and eldest son of Saudi Arabia’s current monarch, King Salman. The prince died in July 2001 at age 46.

Florida Bulldog, working with Irish author Anthony Summers, first reported about the FBI’s Sarasota investigation in September 2011. The story included statements by Prestancia’s security chief and a counterterrorism officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity, as to how the FBI had used the gatehouse’s sign-in logs and photographs of license plates to discover that cars used by 9/11 ringleader Mohamed Atta and other hijackers had visited al-Hijji’s home. Atta and two other hijack pilots took flight lessons at nearby Venice Municipal Airport.

No disclosure to Congress, 9/11 Commission

The story also noted the FBI had not disclosed its Sarasota investigation to either Congress’s Joint Inquiry into 9/11 or the subsequent 9/11 Commission. The FBI has said it did notify Congress and the 9/11 Commission, but a number of persons affiliated with those probes, including former Sen. Graham, have said they were not told about the Sarasota Saudis.

The newly released Memorandum for the Record does not address the significant question of whether the FBI notified Congress and the 9/11 Commission of its Sarasota probe, and if not, why. It does, however, dispute the accounts of both Prestancia’s then-security chief, Larry Berberich, and the counterterrorism officer who said FBI agents collected and analyzed the gatehouse records that documented who entered Prestancia prior to 9/11 and where they went.

“The FBI did not obtain the gate records from the community because there was not a justified reason to believe there was a connection with the hijackers. There was no investigative belief or reason to obtain the records,” the memo says.

“It’s unbelievable that they would make the statement that they didn’t collect the records because they didn’t have a belief that there was a connection,” Graham said. “It was the records that would have given them that connection.”

Nevertheless, the memo says elsewhere that the FBI concluded there was “no evidence the hijackers visited the family’s residence.” The memo does not explain how, if the gate records were not obtained, the FBI could reach that conclusion.

The FBI has said in public comments, and to the 9/11 Review Commission, that it found “no evidence” connecting the Sarasota Saudis to any of the 9/11 hijackers, “nor was there any connection found between the family and the 9/11 plot.”

A startling statement

The memo, however, includes a startling statement about the FBI’s record-keeping practices that indicates the bureau cannot back up its conclusions. “There is no actual documentation of searches and work done to rule out connections,” the memo says.

The memorandum goes on to dispute the counterterrorism officer’s account of how agents, using a subpoena, obtained phone company records about incoming and outgoing calls to the Escondito house. A link analysis – tracking calls based on dates, times and length of conversation – found that calls dating back more than a year prior to 9/11 “lined up with the known suspects,” the counterterrorism officer said.

The links were not only to Atta and other hijack pilots, but to other terrorist suspects, including Walid al-Shehhri, who flew with Atta on the first plane to strike the World Trade Center, and al Qaeda terrorist Adnan Shukrijumah, the counterterrorism officer said. Shukrijumah, a Broward resident later added to the FBI’s Most Wanted Terrorist List, was reported killed in a military raid in Pakistan in December 2014.

The memorandum, however, says, “The FBI found there is no evidence and no grounds that the family, or 2 & 3 degrees of separation, had any telephonic connection,” with the hijackers.

FBI Director James Comey, second from right, is flanked by 9/11 Review Commissioners Tim Roemer, right, Ed Meese and Bruce Hoffman, far left. Photo: FBI
Neither the memo nor the 9/11 Review Commission’s final report indicate that the commission sought to verify any of the FBI’s assertions. The FBI has declined to make public records about its phone record analysis.

Similarly, the memo discusses statements made to the 9/11 Review Commission by the FBI regarding its own April 2002 “many connections” report linking the Sarasota Saudis and 9/11 figures.

80,000 pages

The FBI released that redacted report, containing national security information and originally marked “declassify on 03-14-2038,” to Florida Bulldog in 2013 during a separate Freedom of Information lawsuit that sought access to records of the FBI’s Sarasota probe.

In that case, a federal judge in Fort Lauderdale ordered the FBI in April 2014 to produce for his inspection 80,000 pages of records from its Tampa area field office. The judge’s inspection is ongoing.

Before the 9/11 Review Commission, however, the FBI disavowed its report, saying it was “poorly written and wholly unsubstantiated,” according to th

"...allowing our experiences and analysis to be added to the forum that will constitute public opinion could help halt the disastrous trend toward building more fortresses of fear which will become in the 21st century this generation's monuments to failure."

-Jo-Ann Mayhew, from JPP Vol. 1:1 (1988)

General Information
For 25 years, the Journal of Prisoners on Prisons (JPP) has been a prisoner written, academically oriented and peer reviewed, non-profit journal, based on the tradition of the penal press. It brings the knowledge produced by prison writers together with academic arguments to enlighten public discourse about the current state of carceral institutions. This is particularly important because with few exceptions, definitions of deviance and constructions of those participating in these defined acts are incompletely created by social scientists, media representatives, politicians and those in the legal community. These analyses most often promote self-serving interests, omit the voices of those most affected, and facilitate repressive and reactionary penal policies and practices. As a result, the JPP attempts to acknowledge the accounts, experiences, and criticisms of the criminalized by providing an educational forum that allows women and men to participate in the development of research that concerns them directly. In an age where `crime` has become lucrative and exploitable, the JPP exists as an important alternate source of information that competes with popularly held stereotypes and misconceptions about those who are currently, or those who have in the past, faced the deprivation of liberty.

Developing News Stories and JPP Perspectives

Prisoners’ Justice Day (PJD) emerged as a prisoner-initiated day of non-violent strike action to commemorate the death of Eddie Nalon in the segregation unit of Millhaven maximum-security penitentiary on August 10th 1974. It was first observed in 1975. In 1976, the prisoners of Millhaven issued a communication “To All Prisoners and Concerned Peoples from across Canada”, calling for one-day hunger strikes in opposition to the use of solitary confinement and in support of prisoners’ rights, in memory of Eddie Nalon, as well as Robert Landers, who also died alone in ‘the hole’.

Since that time, PJD has become an internationally-recognized day of solidarity and action, both inside and outside the prison, to commemorate deaths in custody and reflect upon other human rights atrocities behind bars. For those interested in learning more about this important day of memorialization and resistance, the JPP has made articles published in 1991 by Robert Bryden (click to download) and Bob Gaucher (click to download)

Depression
Magic mushroom ingredient psilocybin can lift depression, studies show
Immediate reduction in depression and anxiety for up to eight months seen in patients with advanced cancer given a single dose of psilocybin

A single dose of psilocybin, the active ingredient of magic mushrooms, can lift the anxiety and depression experienced by people with advanced cancer for six months or even longer, two new studies show.

Researchers involved in the two trials in the United States say the results are remarkable. The volunteers had “profoundly meaningful and spiritual experiences” which made most of them rethink life and death, ended their despair and brought about lasting improvement in the quality of their lives.

The results of the research are published in the Journal of Psychopharmacology together with no less than ten commentaries from leading scientists in the fields of psychiatry and palliative care, who all back further research. While the effects of magic mushrooms have been of interest to psychiatry since the 1950s, the classification of all psychedelics in the US as schedule 1 drugs in the 1970s, in the wake of the Vietnam war and the rise of recreational drug use in the hippy counter-culture, has erected daunting legal and financial obstacles to running trials.

“I think it is a big deal both in terms of the findings and in terms of the history and what it represents. It was part of psychiatry and vanished and now it’s been brought back,” said Dr Stephen Ross, director of addiction psychiatry at NYU Langone Medical Center and lead investigator of the study that was based there.

Around 40-50% of newly diagnosed cancer patients suffer some sort of depression or anxiety. Antidepressants have little effect, particularly on the “existential” depression that can lead some to feel their lives are meaningless and contemplate suicide.

The main findings of the NYU study, which involved 29 patients, and the larger one from Johns Hopkins University with 51 patients, that a single dose of the medication can lead to immediate reduction in the depression and anxiety caused by cancer and that the effect can last up to eight months, “is unprecedented,” said Ross. “We don’t have anything like it.”

The results of the studies were very similar, with around 80% of the patients attributing moderately or greatly improved wellbeing or life satisfaction to a single high dose of the drug, given with psychotherapy support.

Professor Roland Griffiths, of the departments of psychiatry and neuroscience who led the study at Johns Hopkins University school of medicine, said he did not expect the findings, which he described as remarkable. “I am bred as a sceptic. I was sceptical at the outset that this drug could produce long-lasting changes

The discovery of DiSarro’s remains and the charges against his alleged killers have brought them a measure of solace. But they remain haunted by questions about whether the FBI jeopardized his life by pressuring him to cooperate and about how his alleged killers evaded justice for so long

A family photograph shows Steven DiSarro with his children.

‘There were thousands of times I felt cheated, times my friends’ fathers took me to football games . . . all the stuff you normally do with a dad.’

Their suspicions have been heightened by the legacy of FBI corruption that spanned decades. DiSarro’s murder came at a time when agents were allowing James “Whitey” Bulger and Stephen “The Rifleman” Flemmi to kill with impunity while leaking the names of those cooperating against them.

In 2003, Flemmi told investigators that he walked into the Sharon home of Salemme’s ex-wife on May 10, 1993, the day DiSarro disappeared, while Salemme’s son, Francis P. Salemme Jr. was strangling DiSarro as Weadick held his legs off the ground. He said the elder Salemme and his brother, Jackie, watched the killing and laterenlisted Rhode Island mobster Robert DeLuca to help dispose of the body.

Flemmi gave his account when Salemme, who admitted participating in eight murders in the 1960s, was in the federal witness protection program after testifying against Bulger’s former FBI handler.

As a result, Salemme was convicted of lying about DiSarro’s murder, then allowed back into the protection program after serving five years in prison.

The discovery of DiSarro’s remains and the emergence of new witnesses, including DeLuca, led to the current murder c
