Sharpshooting plumber fired shot that took down Texas church gunman | New York Post

The man hailed as a hero for confronting the Texas mass shooter during his rampage is a sharpshooting plumber with no military background — who hit the gunman through a gap in his body armor, according to a report.

Stephen Willeford managed to shoot Devin Kelley before jumping in another man’s truck and chasing him down, the Daily Mail reported.

Texas Department of Public Safety chief Freeman Martin said Willeford “grabbed his rifle and engaged the suspect” after Kelley left the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, where he opened fire with an assault rifle and killed 26 people.

Homelessness soars on West Coast as cities struggle to cope - SFGate

SEATTLE (AP) — Housing prices are soaring here thanks to the tech industry, but the boom comes with a consequence: A surge in homelessness marked by 400 unauthorized tent camps in parks, under bridges, on freeway medians and along busy sidewalks. The liberal city is trying to figure out what to do.
"I've got economically zero unemployment in my city, and I've got thousands of homeless people that actually are working and just can't afford housing," said Seattle City Councilman Mike O'Brien. "There's nowhere for these folks to move to."
That struggle is not Seattle's alone. A homeless crisis is rocking the entire West Coast, pushing abject poverty into the open like never before.

Mumps Makes a Comeback, Even Among the Vaccinated - The New York Times

“Mumps outbreaks are on the rise,” said Dr. Janell Routh, a pediatrician who is a medical officer on the mumps team at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. More than 6,000 cases of mumps were reported in the United States last year, the highest number in 10 years. Around 2010, total annual cases were down in the hundreds.

Most of the recent cases occurred in outbreaks, including a large one in Arkansas, rather than as a sporadic here-a-case, there-a-case disease. And most of the outbreaks were among people 18 to 22 years old, most of whom had had the requisite two doses of mumps vaccine in childhood. “We are seeing it in a young and highly vaccinated population,” Dr. Routh said.

Randolph County mother accused of using kids to break into buildings, posting videos on YouTube | myfox8.com

RANDOLPH COUNTY, N.C. – A Randolph County mother was arrested and charged Friday after the sheriff said she broke into buildings with kids and posted videos of the incidents on YouTube.

Ashley Ball, 22, is charged with one count of misdemeanor breaking and entering and two counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

The sheriff's office received an anonymous tip that Ball was recording videos of herself breaking into homes and posting them online, oftentimes with a 13-year-old and a toddler in tow.

Sheriff Robert Graves said the 2-year-old girl is her biological daughter and his office believes the 13-year-old is Ball's sister, or someone she calls "sister."

"My first reaction was how brazen could this be? You're televising yourself on YouTube video committing a criminal act," Graves said. "The second thing that was disturbing to us was that she had children there with her while she was doing this. One was a toddler and didn't have anything on but a diaper outside."

Drone stalking several women in rural Port Lincoln community part of growing list of UAV concerns - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

A group of women living in a rural setting near Port Lincoln on South Australia's Eyre Peninsula have been woken at night by a drone looking into their homes.

Police are yet to find the offender, and some of the women have told the ABC they are living in constant fear of another visit which usually happens late at night or very early morning.

One of the women, who like the rest of the group did not want to be identified, was asleep and alone at home on her relatively remote hobby farm.

She was woken by a bang on her bedroom window and when she looked out into the darkness was confronted by a camera attached to a drone, hovering within centimetres of her window.

The idea of climate change IS A LIE! The truth is we are being judge by God and these natural disasters are his punishments on us sinners.

Jerry Brown talks Donald Trump at Vatican | The Sacramento Bee

“At the highest circles, people still don’t get it,” he said. “It’s not just a light rinse” that’s required. “We need a total, I might say ‘brain washing.’

“We need to wash our brains out and see a very different kind of world.”

This one tweet from Matt Drudge sent the internet into an uproar — here’s why – TheBlaze

Drudge’s tweet received quite a bit of attention, and as of Sunday morning, more than 13,000 retweets, more than 22,000 “likes” and thousands of responses. That’s because the excerpt Drudge pulled from Brazile’s book is particularly controversial as it is about the murdered DNC staffer Seth Rich.

Right-wing sites reported for months on Rich’s murder, all while the mainstream media accused them of peddling conspiracy theories. But if Brazile wrote about it in her book, then it gives even more credence to the theory.

Rich’s murder remains unsolved. His parents believe it was a botched robbery attempt, as Rich was shot in the back.

“Judah must return, Jerusalem must be rebuilt, and the temple, and water come out from under the temple, and the waters of the Dead Sea be healed [see Ezekiel 47:1–9]. It will take some time to rebuild the walls of the city and the temple, etc.; and all this must be done before the Son of Man will make His appearance. There will be wars and rumors of wars, signs in the heavens above and on the earth beneath, the sun turned into darkness and the moon to blood, earthquakes in divers places, the seas heaving beyond their bounds; then will appear one grand sign of the Son of Man in heaven. But what will the world do? They will say it is a planet, a comet, etc. But the Son of Man will come as the sign of the coming of the Son of Man, which will be as the light of the morning cometh out of the east [see Joseph Smith—Matthew 1:26].”

Purge of Saudi princes, businessmen widens, travel curbs imposed

RIYADH (Reuters) - A campaign of mass arrests of Saudi Arabian royals, ministers and businessmen expanded on Monday after a top entrepreneur was reportedly detained in the biggest anti-corruption purge of the kingdom's affluent elite in its modern history.

The reported arrest of Nasser bin Aqeel al-Tayyar followed the detention of dozens of top Saudis including billionaire investor Prince Alwaleed bin Talal in a crackdown that the attorney general described as "phase one".

The purge is the latest in a series of dramatic steps by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to assert Saudi influence internationally and amass more power for himself at home.

FDA Cracks Down On Claims That Cannabis Can Cure Cancer « CBS Philly

PHILADELPHIA (CNN) – The US Food and Drug Administration is cracking down on companies it says are making unsubstantiated claims that certain products made from marijuana can cure cancer.

This week, the agency responsible for policing the American food and drug market issued warning letters to four companies that are “illegally selling products online that claim to prevent, diagnose, treat, or cure cancer without evidence to support these outcomes.” It said in a statement, “The illegally sold products allegedly contain cannabidiol (CBD), a component of the marijuana plant that is not FDA approved in any drug product for any indication.”

The two sides are not currently talking at this very moment, sources said.

Gore Lawyer David Boies Implicated in Insane, Ornate Plot to Discredit Weinstein Accusers | LawNewz

There are very few ways to adequately summarize the mindblowing allegations in a brand-new New Yorker article that reports Harvey Weinstein engaged in an ornate plot to discredit, intimidate and stop accusers from stepping forward. Hiring an intelligence firm named Black Cube (comprised of former Mossad and other Israeli intel agents) to use false identities to meet with journalists and alleged victims? Check. Attempting to squash the New York Times’ bombshell sexual harassment report? Check. Relying on massive corporate firms to dig up discrediting information on accusers? Check. Relying on high-profile attorneys…check.

Face to Face with Nest's smartest home security camera

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Nest’s new home security camera is supposed to be so smart that it can identify people it’s been introduced to.

That skill comes from facial-recognition technology made by Nest’s sibling company, Google. The Nest Cam IQ camera is so slick that it carries a premium price — $300 — plus a $10 monthly subscription to run the facial-recognition program and other features, such as 10-day video storage. That compares with Nest’s $200 standard camera. Google’s facial-recognition technology also is being added to a camera-equipped doorbell from Nest; a price hasn’t been disclosed yet.

Saudi Arabia calls missile launch 'act of war' by Iran, vows retaliation | Fox News

Saudi Arabia on Monday called the attempted missile attack on Riyadh’s main airport this weekend an "act of war" by Iran and vowed to retaliate.

Houthi rebels in Yemen, who have been fighting Saudi-backed forces there for several years, claimed responsibility for firing the ballistic missile on Saturday. The missile traveled more than 500 miles before Saudi Arabia intercepted it.

The official Saudi Press Agency charged that debris from the missile proved that it was made in Iran and smuggled into Yemen. American officials have previously charged that Iran has armed the Houthi rebels.

The homeless defy stereotypes in wealthy Silicon Valley - San Francisco Chronicle

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. (AP) — In the same affluent, suburban city where Google built its headquarters, Tes Saldana lives in a crowded but tidy camper she parks on the street.

She concedes it's "not a very nice living situation," but it also is not unusual. Until authorities told them to move, more than a dozen other RVs filled with people who can't afford rent joined Saldana on a tree-lined street in Mountain View, parked between a Target and a luxury apartment complex.

Homeless advocates and city officials say it's outrageous that in the shadow of a booming tech economy - where young millionaires dine on $15 wood-grilled avocado and think nothing of paying $1,000 for an iPhone X - thousands of families can't afford a home. Many of the homeless work regular jobs, in some cases serving the very people whose sky-high net worth is the reason housing has become unaffordable for so many.

Man who shot Texas church gunman shares his story

SUTHERLAND SPRINGS, Texas —
Stephen Willeford shot and chased the man who killed 26 people in a Texas church on Sunday. He spoke to 40/29 News in an exclusive sit-down interview on Monday.

Willeford was at home when his daughter came into his bedroom to tell him she heard gunshots at the First Baptist Church nearby.

Willeford, a former NRA instructor, got his rifle out of his safe while his daughter looked outside again. She ran back in and told him she saw a man in black tactical gear shooting up the church.

"I kept hearing the shots, one after another, very rapid shots - just 'pop pop pop pop' and I knew every one of those shots represented someone, that it was aimed at someone, that they weren't just random shots," Willeford said."

Scotland apologizes to gay men for historical convictions

EDINBURGH (Reuters) - Scotland's devolved government issued an apology on Tuesday to men convicted in the past for same-sex activity and passed a new law which will allow them to clear their names.

"It is only right that we address this historic wrong," First Minister Nicola Sturgeon told the Scottish parliament.

"Discriminatory laws, although abolished, continue to have implications for people to this day," she added. "The wrong has been committed by the state to them, not by the individuals."

She added: "I categorically, unequivocally and wholeheartedly apologize for those laws and for the hurt and the harm they did to so many."

Gunman Checked Each Aisle, Shot Babies At Point-Blank Range « CBS Dallas / Fort Worth

SUTHERLAND SPRINGS (AP) — The gunman who killed 26 people at a small-town Texas church went aisle to aisle looking for victims and shot crying babies at point-blank range, a couple who survived the attack said.

In Wake Of Texas Church Shooting, Faithful Consider Firearms « CBS13 | CBS Sacramento

“The scriptures make it clear that Jesus has issued a very quotable directive that we are to arm ourselves with the tools and machinery of lethal force,” said Geoff Peabody.

Peabody teaches gun safety courses free of charge to local church members, from ministers to their security teams. But the deadly mass shooting at a Texas church that claimed 26 lives is sparking interest from religious leaders across the country packing heat to protect their congregation.

“Ministries in the faith community are getting their head out of the sand and trying to get a clue that we are actually our brother’s keeper,” he said.

Senator Menendez Juror Asks Trial Judge: ‘What Is a Senator?’ - Bloomberg

On their first full day of jury deliberations at the bribery trial of Senator Robert Menendez, a juror asked the judge a basic question: What is a senator?

U.S. District Judge William Walls declined to answer the question, and he refused that juror’s request for a transcript of Monday’s closing argument by Menendez’s attorney, Abbe Lowell. The panel had returned to the Newark federal courthouse Tuesday, after spending about 75 minutes deliberating the day before following summations by Lowell and a rebuttal argument by a prosecutor. Walls told jurors that they should rely on their individual and collective memories to determine how to define a senator and what was in the transcript.
