The panal, which means honeycomb in Spanish, can be spent in just a few stores. But residents of one neighborhood desperate for spending cash said they welcome the idea proposed by pro-government groups.

AP Exclusive: Thought police instill fear in western China

The student’s friends think he joined the thousands — possibly tens of thousands — of people, rights groups and academics estimate, who have been spirited without trial into secretive detention camps for alleged political crimes that range from having extremist thoughts to merely traveling or studying abroad. The mass disappearances, beginning the past year, are part of a sweeping effort by Chinese authorities to use detentions and data-driven surveillance to impose a digital police state in the region of Xinjiang and over its Uighurs, a 10-million strong, Turkic-speaking Muslim minority that China says has been influenced by Islamic extremism.

Along with the detention camps, unprecedented levels of police blanket Xinjiang’s streets. Cutting-edge digital surveillance systems track where Uighurs go, what they read, who they talk to and what they say. And under an opaque system that treats practically all Uighurs as potential terror suspects, Uighurs who contact family abroad risk questioning or detention.

The campaign has been led by Chen Quanguo, a Chinese Communist Party official, who was promoted in 2016 to head Xinjiang after subduing another restive region — Tibet. Chen vowed to hunt down Uighur separatists blamed for attacks that have left hundreds dead, saying authorities would “bury terrorists in the ocean of the people’s war and make them tremble.”

Communism kills.

BuzzFeed Editor: 'All I Want For Christmas is Full Communism Now'

A science editor at BuzzFeed UK raised a few eyebrows last week after some curious remarks about Communism.

“All I want for Christmas is full Communism now,” editor Kelly Oakes tweeted — before locking down her account after it was picked by right-wing media and the always ferocious James Woods.

Divorce Is Making American Families 66% Bigger - Bloomberg

This holiday season, many Americans may need a flow chart to figure how they’re all related. What do you call, for example, your stepmother’s son’s live-in girlfriend’s 11-year-old son?

As family structures become more complicated, a new body of new research is attempting to quantify the trend. The proliferation of stepchildren, half-siblings, and other extended relationships has important implications for how American families function.

Wisconsin, the Surveillance State | The Weekly Standard

On December 6, the WisDOJ released a 91-page report on the leak, and what it shows is that Wisconsin public officials set up what amounts to a political spying operation.

The John Doe investigations have been a fixture of Wisconsin politics and courts for more than half a decade. Originating in 2010 with a request from Milwaukee County executive Scott Walker—who was running for governor—to investigate some missing money in his own office, they metastasized into a series of wide-ranging witch hunts used to harass and intimidate conservatives. In both the 2012 recall election to unseat Walker and the 2014 gubernatorial race, Democrats frequently cited the investigations as evidence of his “corruption.”

John Doe proceedings are initiated by a judge to see if a crime has been committed; investigators and suspects are prohibited from discussing the case. The Wisconsin law, dating to 1889, was intended to protect the identities of those being investigated. Yet the inquiries into Walker and his supporters achieved the exact opposite effect. While confidential details about Republicans leaked freely to the media, those under investigation were barred from defending themselves. The gag order against the investigation’s targets prompted U.S. Circuit Court judge Frank Easterbrook to call the John Doe framework “screamingly unconstitutional.”

Bay Area cities face growing crisis as RVs become homes of last resort – East Bay Times

Robert Ramirez lives in an old RV, parked curbside in an industrial section of San Jose.

He knows one day soon he’ll get that knock on his door. Police will politely ask him to relocate. Neither party will be happy, Ramirez said, but he’ll agree to move along.

It’s happened before, and he expects it will happen again — no matter how hard he tries to be a good neighbor and keep his vehicle and sidewalk clean. The 54-year-old lives on public assistance and collecting recyclables. “I have to do whatever I have to do,” he said.

University teaches white employees how to overcome the ‘discomfort’ of being white - The College Fix

A two-day professional development conference held recently at the University of Michigan included a training session that aimed to help white employees deal with their “whiteness” so they could become better equipped to fight for social justice causes, according to organizers.

Participants who took part in the “Conversations on Whiteness” session, held December 5 during the university’s Student Life Professional Development Conference, were taught to “recognize the difficulties they face when talking about social justice issues related to their White identity, explore this discomfort, and devise ways to work through it,” the university’s website states.

Scientists hope to inject robo-cat with AI to help seniors - ABC News

Imagine a cat that can keep a person company, doesn't need a litter box and can remind an aging relative to take her medicine or help find her eyeglasses.

That's the vision of toymaker Hasbro and scientists at Brown University, who have received a three-year, $1 million grant from the National Science Foundation to find ways to add artificial intelligence to Hasbro's "Joy for All" robotic cat.

Brain implant could stop sex predators and prevent suicide

Sexual predators could be prevented from carrying out attacks with a brain implant which detects a ‘moment of weakness’ then zaps them with electricity before they can act on their harmful impulses.

Scientists at Stanford University have discovered that the brain sends out a distinct signal in the seconds before a burst of impulsive behaviour.

The electrical activity occurs in an area of the brain called the nucleus accumbens, the reward centre which reinforces survival-promoting actions like obtaining food or sex, by flooding the body with anticipatory pleasure.

COMMISSIONER IN TALKS WITH UN TO PUT TROOPS ON THE STREETS OF CHICAGO
“The United Nations has a track record of protecting minority populations”

Commissioner in Talks With UN to Put Troops on the Streets of Chicago

Cook County Commissioner Richard Boykin is in talks with United Nations officials to explore the possibility of putting UN troops on the streets of Chicago to address the city’s horrendous gun violence problem.
Boykin flew to New York last week to meet with UN assistant secretary-general for peacebuilding support, Oscar Fernandez-Taranco to discuss the issue.
“The United Nations has a track record of protecting minority populations,” Boykin said before the meeting. “There was tribal warfare between the Tutsis and the Hutus in Africa, and they deployed peacekeeping troops there to help save those populations and reduce the bloodshed. (That is false. The UN refused to intervene. See my comment below - Lundbaek) We have to do something — black people in Chicago make up 30 percent of the population but 80 percent of those who are killed by gun violence.”
Boykin said that UN peacekeepers would be more suited to patrolling the streets than the U.S. National Guard because they are better “trained” for the role.
Mayor Rahm Emanuel did not directly address any potential role for the United Nations in Chicago when asked by reporters.
The idea of deploying UN peacekeepers on U.S. soil is likely to rile many on the right who have warned about international forces conducting gun confiscation operations domestically for decades.
Earlier this year, President Trump suggested deploying the National Guard in troubled areas of Chicago, but his idea was fiercely opposed by Democrats.
“What the hell is going on in Chicago?” asked Trump during a speech last week, as he drew attention to statistics suggesting that violent crime across the country is on the rise again.

I fail to note any conflict that the UN has settled on the side of freedom as we Americans think of it. On the other hand, in 1994, Kofi Annan, then head of the UN's peacekeeping division, thwarted efforts of the UN military commander Canadian General Romero Dallaire to intervene to prevent the massacre of hundreds of thousands of Christian Tutsis by Arab Muslims, and then blocked investigation of the incident.

Desperate Venezuelans peddle wares door-to-door in Colombia to survive

CUCUTA, Colombia (Reuters) - Thousands of impoverished Venezuelans are crossing the border to Colombia every day to sell cheap basics, from oranges to candles, in a desperate attempt to earn hard currency amid their country's worsening economic collapse.

The porous roughly 2,220-kilometer (1,380-mile) frontier for years has been rife with smuggling due to the massive differences in prices on either side due to controls imposed by Venezuela's socialist government.

Facebook's transparency report: the company is giving the US government more and more data — Quartz

Every year, Facebook gets tens of thousands of requests for data from governments worldwide, including search warrants, subpoenas, or calls to restrict certain kinds of content. According to a new report released by the company on Dec. 18, these requests are increasing.

In the US, the requests rose by 26% from the last six months of 2016 to the first six months of 2017, while globally, requests increased by about 21%. Since 2013, when the company first started providing data on government requests, the US number has been steadily rising—it has roughly tripled in a period of four years.

House Republicans quietly investigate perceived corruption at DOJ, FBI - POLITICO

A group of House Republicans has gathered secretly for weeks in the Capitol in an effort to build a case that senior leaders of the Justice Department and FBI improperly — and perhaps criminally — mishandled the contents of a dossier that describes alleged ties between President Donald Trump and Russia, according to four people familiar with their plans.

A subset of the Republican members of the House intelligence committee, led by Chairman Devin Nunes of California, has been quietly working parallel to the committee's high-profile inquiry into Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election. They haven't informed Democrats about their plans, but they have consulted with the House's general counsel.

Census figures show Idaho has U.S.'s fastest-growing population | Idaho Statesman

Idaho’s population increased enough in the past year to earn us the title of nation’s fastest-growing state, according to data released Wednesday by the U.S. Census Bureau.

Between July 2016 and July 2017, Idaho’s population increased 2.2 percent to a total of 1.7 million residents.

“Domestic migration drove change in the two fastest-growing states, Idaho and Nevada, while an excess of births over deaths played a major part in the growth of the third fastest-growing state, Utah,” said the Census Bureau’s Luke Rogers, Chief of the Population Estimates Branch, in a release.
