Feds post largest ever monthly deficit... again

Post by Col. Flagg »

http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/201 ... icit-ever/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
The federal government posted its largest monthly deficit in history in February at $223 billion, according to preliminary numbers the Congressional Budget Office released Monday morning.

That figure tops last February’s record of $220.9 billion, and marks the 29th straight month the government has run in the red — a modern record. The last time the federal government posted even a monthly surplus was September 2008, just before the financial collapse.

Last month’s federal deficit is nearly four times as large as the spending cuts House Republicans have passed in their spending bill, and is more than 30 times the size of Senate Democrats’ opening bid of $6 billion.
Seriously... how much longer do we have??? :-o

Anybody's guess......

I anticipate that we'll see some serious tightening up (austerity) as summer approaches. The market will probably do a fairly substantial unwind in the next couple of months. State and local governments will take drastic steps for the new fiscal year in July. QE2 is on target to run out in June.

Possibility of massive earthquake at the end of May (at least FEMA appears to be ramping up and planning for one). Also have the moon episode here in a week or so.

When the Major countries in the world finish losing confidence in the Dollar you can hold on to you hat. The only reason we are still afloat is because most other countries have similar problems with their money. It's a world debt epidemic. Debt is perhaps the biggest addiction on the planet, except for TV.

I heard today on the radio that the monthly federal deficit now exceeds what the yearly deficit was just in 2007!

And yet, in our stake conference yesterday (satellite broadcast from SL), Presiding Bishop H. David Burton made two comments specifically about the economy, saying things were looking up - there's hope on the horizon - and the general gist was, things are improving and getting better economically. It's a good thing I was sitting down. He then went on to mention Pres. Hinckley's "portent of stormy weather" talk and made it sound like these past three years is what the stormy weather was. The other speakers, Pres. Eyring, Elder Cook, and Sis. Cook (no relation) didn't mention anything regarding 'last days', economy, etc.. that I can recall. So, I am left scratching my head... :-?

Your presiding Bishop sounds stunningly uninformed and ignorant about what is going on in the world and what is happening inside this country. Sounds like someone needs to advise him to read Ether 8. The entire financial system collapsed in 2008 and the only reason everything is seemingly still OK is because of phony, funny money from the 'Fed' that it creates out of thin air - they had to keep asset prices from falling through the floor to save themselves, crony banks and Wall Street and so they've come up with all kinds of financial charades and criminal mischief to artificially prop up everything - but in the process, the dollar is slowly collapsing. Once their bogus support ends and they're ready to pull the plug, look out - that's hardly a scenario in which everything is 'getting better'. :)) Sadly though, there are a plethora of priesthood holders with this same mentality - all is well in Zion because our chruch leaders aren't up at the pulpit proclaiming financial doom and gloom and our media and good 'ole government say everything is improving. :ymblushing:

I think he would say:

1. Get out of debt
2. Get at least 3-6 months of food storage and a year's worth if possible
3. Live within your means
4. Try to make do with less
5. Ye Elders of Israel, awake from your slumber
6. Stop watching American Idol and filth on TV and educate yourselves about what is going on in the world around you
7. Attend your church meetings
8. Pay your tithing
9. Pray always
10. Serve the Lord and our Savior
11. Prepare your families for a time of trouble the earth has never before experienced
12. The 'war on terror' and the 9/11 attacks are/were frauds

Actually I was there and took notes (It's a mess, but you can see. He did quote Pres Hinckley. Here they are...Regional Stake Conference
March 6th 2011

Attending: Bishop H David Burton, Sister Mary Cook, Elder Quentin Cook, President Eyring
Bishop Burton:
There is a great destiny in this area, a great heart. It is the heart of the country. It is an economical and morally stable area full of good grounded people. We are suffering from a great moral malaise in the world today.
We need to take more opportunity to listen to Prophets today. We have been counseled to create our own Bishop’s storehouse in our homes. We should not fail to comfort those who suffer and mourn. King Mosiah administered relief to the poor. Mosiah 4:26
The moral malaise will continue. John 4 5-14
Ezekial had a vision of the Temple in Jerusalem that was to be built in the latter days. Among the things he saw was living water coming from the depths of the Temple. In our lives today, how do we tap into the Living Waters?
1. Keep Sabbath day holy which will help us withstand the buffetings of Satan.
2. Have a Temple recommend. Respond to Temple service.
3. Make sure your family follows religious observance
a. The best thing to give youth are spiritually strong parents
b. Study the scriptures as a family
4. Assist someone in understanding the Gospel
a. Engage in sacred prayer
b. Serve in holy places

Sister Cook
Mutual theme this year is the 13th Article of Faith
“We believe in being honest, true, chaste, benevolent, virtuous, and in doing good
to all men; indeed, we may say that we follow the admonition of Paul—We believe
all things, we hope all things, we have endured many things, and hope to be able to
endure all things. If there is anything virtuous, lovely, or of good report or
praiseworthy, we seek after these things.”
She focused on being honest and true. She asked this question: What would happen if everyone in the world practiced honesty?
Alma 27:27
“And they were among the people of Nephi, and also numbered among the people
who were of the church of God. And they were also distinguished for their zeal
towards God, and also towards men; for they were perfectly honest and upright
in all things; and they were firm in the faith of Christ, even unto the end.”
The triplets of dishonesty are: Lying – stealing – Cheating

She quotes Elder Bednar in a talk on Deception(?) In our world today, it is easy to be anonymous on the web. We are encouraged to hide our sins online. Look into your heart and repent.

Be true – Live a life of integrity. Live a seamless life. She held up a piece of material that had two sides on it. One had one seam on it and the other side had no seams on it. She used it to show that some people live differently on the Sabbath then they do the other days of the week. She said that when we live one way all the time, our lives are “seamless”. A life of integrity pays eternal dividends. Fill your life with virtuous activities.

Elder Cook

Mentioned four historical events that happened in the Midwest.
1. Zion’s camp and its refining process
2. Liberty Jail and Missouri
3. Nauvoo
4. The trek west

He said at the time the saints were in Nauvoo, they were asked to give 3 different types of tithing in order to help build the original Temple:
1. One tenth of their assets
2. One tenth of their increase
3. One tenth of their days

He says we are provided with the scriptures as guides.
D&C 1 : 12-14
“Prepare ye, prepare ye for that which is to come, for the Lord is nigh;
And the anger of the Lord is kindled, and his sword is bathed in heaven, and it
shall fall upon the inhabitants of the earth.
And the arm of the Lord shall be revealed; and the day cometh that they who
will not hear the voice of the Lord, neither the voice of his servants, neither
give heed to the words of the prophets and apostles, shall be cut off from
among the people;”

He said Pres Hinckley gave a talk on Jan 31, 2002 and told us to reduce our debt, increase our food storage and become more self-reliant.
He said we need to strengthen our family in the Gospel and increase our faith in Jesus Christ. Quoted Mosiah 2 :41
“And moreover, I would desire that ye should consider on the blessed and happy
state of those that keep the commandments of God. For behold, they are blessed
in all things, both temporal and spiritual; and if they hold out faithful to the end
they are received into heaven, that thereby they may dwell with God in a state of
never-ending happiness. O remember, remember that these things are true; for
the Lord God hath spoken it.”
He told us we needed to create Zion in our lives and to live by the Temple teachings. He quoted “If ye are prepared, ye shall not fear.”

President Eyring
3 Nephi 12:48
“Therefore I would that ye should be perfect even as I, or your Father who is in
heaven is perfect.”
He said that the path to perfection lies along a trail or ordinances and covenants. Love of God is symbolized in the Temple. Ezekial went from attending the temple daily to being a prisoner in Babylon for the rest of his life. Can you imagine? Our temples are sources of living waters. God has provided a way, but we must provide the faith. You don’t have to do everything all at once. Just one step at a time. Persistence and repentance. Obedience is a matter of the heart…Giving to the poor is possible. Giving when it is difficult will make you more like the Savior. God will help you rise above your trials. Be the best you can! Raise the bar – Aim to get better – Healing waters will come to the faithful.

Great notes Songbird. I posted my notes on Elder Cooks talk. I felt there was significance in the order he recounted the difficulties the members faced in the locations he named. It fit with what we will go through and the order we will go through it. These are my notes"
Nauvoo was equally inspiring. The challenges to build the temple at great effort and cost.
Poem: “The test of greatness is the way we meet the eternal Every Day.”

Iowa: The saints demonstrated efficiency , hade work, team work. Hand Carts, many people pulled their handcarts up until the day they died.
Missouri, Liberty Jail, “Oh God where art thou …” DC 121 Thine suffering and thine affliction …”
Challenges we face: “There will be physical storms in all of our lives.”
“These are difficult if we are not prepared.”
DC 1:14 “4And the aarm of the Lord shall be revealed; and the bday cometh that they who will not chear the voice of the Lord, neither the voice of his dservants, neither give eheed to the words of the prophets and fapostles, shall be gcut off from among the people;”

Then he cited verse 12 “Prepare ye, prepare ye for that which is to come, for the Lord is nigh;”
Quoted Pres. Hinckley 98 portent of storm
Jan 2002 Urged members to get out of debt, and to prepare

At least that was my take. Thanks for sharing your notes. You included some things I must have missed while I was writing.

I agree. That was the highlight of his talk for me, as well. Elder Cook seemed to stress the story surrounding Zion's Camp and how it was their "Abrahamic Test" - how most people failed and left, but those who endured it well, were truly blessed in the end (after MUCH hard trials). Great talk - lots of important lessons to be learned for our future from studying our history....

Bishop Burton has taken the lead here in building up the City Creek Center, including being the face of the entire project for The Church and the community. He could very well have himself stuck in that gear of putting a positive spin on things.
