My guess is that Trump recognizes it as something conservatives want and liberals oppose, therefore it gets him support and opposition, two things a politician needs.

As he quoted above, the dedicatory prayer that Orson Hyde did in 1841, several things were promised.

They would gain their land back as a country and be permitted to live there.
They would gain Jerusalem back, after becoming a country again.
They would have a temple at Jerusalem.

OF those above, particular the timing of Jerusalem coming back by this source and others is to coincide with being around the time when the time of the Gentiles is coming to a close and marks or foreshadows that it will be time to focus on Israel (the 12 tribes) again.

Why is getting Jerusalem back important?

I didn't realize this till listening to Jewish people speak, but when you get them talking about Jerusalem you find that as a people they've been praying to get Jerusalem back for a very long time...as millions of people for hundreds of years. And then you read that's in the dedicatory prayer? Coincidence,...I think not. (The Lord hears the prayers of his people.)

Also interestingly enough, in 1840 or 41 a couple of leaders in the British government got together and decided to send a big shot Lord over to the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire to ask him to let the Jews start resettling there again. (They couldn't have known Orson Hyde, nor know anything about the church and in an era of very slow communication.) Not long after very slowly Jewish people were allowed to start coming back in. (The main event was obviously the close of World War 2.)

Why is getting Jerusalem back important to the LDS people?

We're hoping to be considered righteous and repentant enough to be permitted to go back to the 'other Jerusalem'. People fail to see how important it is for us that the Jewish people get Jerusalem back. If they can be considered pure and righteous enough to get back Jerusalem, then couldn't we also earn the blessing back again to be permitted to start New Jerusalem in Missiouri again?

US outnumbered 14 to 1 as it vetoes UN vote on status of Jerusalem
A UN security council resolution calling for the withdrawal of Donald Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital has been backed by every council member except the US, which used its veto.

The unanimity of the rest of the council was a stark rebuke to the Trump administration over its unilateral move earlier this month, which upended decades of international consensus.

The Egyptian-drafted resolution did not specifically mention the US or Trump but expressed “deep regret at recent decisions concerning the status of Jerusalem”.

A spokesman for the Palestinian president, Mahmoud Abbas, responded to the veto by saying it was “unacceptable and threatens the stability of the international community because it disrespects it”.

The UK and France had indicated in advance that they would would back the text, which demanded that all countries comply with pre-existing UNSC resolutions on Jerusalem, dating back to 1967, including requirements that the city’s final status be decided in direct negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians.

The resolution was denounced in furious language by the US ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley, who described it as “an insult” that would not be forgotten. “The United States will not be told by any country where we can put our embassy,” she said.

“It’s scandalous to say we are putting back peace efforts,” she added. “The fact that this veto is being done in defence of American sovereignty and in defence of America’s role in the Middle East peace process is not a source of embarrassment for us; it should be an embarrassment to the remainder of the security council.”

The Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, tweeted: “Thank you, Ambassador Haley. On Hanukkah, you spoke like a Maccabi. You lit a candle of truth. You dispel the darkness. One defeated the many. Truth defeated lies. Thank you, President Trump.”
Getting closer to this scripture being fulfilled. The UN is a joke and so is the United Nations security council.

The UN and the UN security council have become tools for islamic extremists to use legal measures against western nations and particular Israel recently. It resembles nothing that it was organized for. Also Trump pulling out funding from groups similar to the UN like UNESCO was because they had caught and found out that money was going to terror and pro terror groups.

The US has vetoed the UN Security Council resolution on Jerusalem, which had demanded the American decision recognizing the city as the Israeli capital be withdrawn. All other UNSC members voted in favor of the document.

Trump threatens to cut aid to U.N. members over Jerusalem vote
WASHINGTON/UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday threatened to cut off financial aid to countries that vote in favor of a draft United Nations resolution calling for the United States to withdraw its decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.

“They take hundreds of millions of dollars and even billions of dollars, and then they vote against us. Well, we’re watching those votes. Let them vote against us. We’ll save a lot. We don’t care,” Trump told reporters at the White House.

According to figures from the U.S. government’s aid agency USAID, in 2016 the United States provided some $13 billion in economic and military assistance to countries in sub-Saharan Africa and $1.6 billion to states in East Asia and Oceania.

It provided some $13 billion to countries in the Middle East and North Africa, $6.7 billion to countries in South and Central Asia, $1.5 billion to states in Europe and Eurasia and $2.2 billion to Western Hemisphere countries, according to USAID.
Please Trump, do defund these frauds!

U.S. warns allies Trump will take Jerusalem vote "personally"
UNITED NATIONS -- President Trump will be watching a vote in the United Nations General Assembly "very carefully," and has asked his ambassador to the world body, Nikki Haley, to "report back on those countries who voted against us," Haley wrote in a letter sent Tuesday to some countries. The letter has been obtained by CBS News.

Haley also sent a tweet warning the U.S. would be "taking names" in Thursday's scheduled vote, which is intended to show a United Nations unified around getting President Trump to withdraw his administration's unilateral recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

At the UN we're always asked to do more & give more. So, when we make a decision, at the will of the American ppl, abt where to locate OUR embassy, we don't expect those we've helped to target us. On Thurs there'll be a vote criticizing our choice. The US will be taking names.
I'm sure the Lord Himself is taking names on this vote too, not just Trump.

Canada among 35 abstaining from UN vote condemning American embassy move to Jerusalem
Canada was one of 35 countries that abstained from a vote Thursday during which more than 100 members of the United Nations overwhelmingly condemned the decision by U.S. President Donald Trump to move the American embassy in Israel to Jerusalem.

“Canada is strongly committed to the goal of a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in the Middle East, including the creation of a Palestinian state living side-by-side in peace and security with Israel. Canada’s longstanding position is that the status of Jerusalem can be resolved only as part of a general settlement of the Israeli-Palestinian dispute. This has been the policy of consecutive governments, both Liberal and Conservative,” said Adam Austen, spokesperson for Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland.

At an emergency session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, members of the international organization cast votes on a motion that represents a major global condemnation of Trump’s decision to move the embassy from Tel Aviv to the contested city of Jerusalem, which both Israel and the Palestinian people claim as their capital.

The countries that voted with the United States against the resolution condemning its embassy move were Togo, Palau, the Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Nauru, Honduras, Guatemala and Israel.

Former prime minister Stephen Harper made a point of solidifying Canadian support for Israel at the United Nations, voting in concert with the U.S. and Israel at several major votes over the years, and the government of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has not significantly strayed from that path, often sticking with the decision to cast matching votes.
Seriously? An emergency session? The UN is beyond a joke now...

Honduras voted with the USA but Canada (who's been one of Israel's greatest allies for decades decides not to vote). Feeling very ashamed to be Canadian today when we don't back up our friends, Israel and the USA on this. Abstaining is worse, it's fence sitting idly.

Image
This picture really shows what's going on around the world in regards to who is against Israel.

U.N. General Assembly Condemns U.S. Decree on Jerusalem
UNITED NATIONS — A majority of the world’s nations delivered a stinging rebuke to the United States on Thursday, denouncing its decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and ignoring President Trump’s threats to retaliate by cutting aid to countries voting against it.

In a collective act of defiance toward Washington, the United Nations General Assembly voted 128 to 9, with 35 abstentions, for a resolution to demand that the United States rescind its Dec. 6 declaration on Jerusalem, the contested holy city.

The resolution is nonbinding and therefore largely symbolic, but the lopsided vote indicated the extent to which the Trump administration’s decision to defy a 50-year international consensus on Jerusalem’s status has unsettled world politics and contributed to America’s diplomatic isolation.

Major allies like Britain, France, Germany and Japan voted for the resolution, though some allies, like Australia and Canada, abstained
We can now really see why all the nations of the world will be against Israel for the Gog and Magog War. There seems to be an innate hatred for the Jews around the world.

It must be difficult for some to separate the actions of a wicked Israeli government and the hopes and dreams and righteous desires of humble people living there.

Perhaps the reason the Israel is so roundly hated has more to do with the policies of her government than the rest of the world planning some Armageddon-like attack on her.

Protecting the sovereignty of their country and capital are not the actions of a wicked government. The Book of Mormon has a million instances that show that. For 3000 years, Jerusalem has been the capital city of the Jews. They lost Jerusalem due to wickedness but not again, not this time. The Lord Himself has declared that He will rescue his friends this time and restore order and peace to the land. There is nothing the UN can do. The UN is the evil government/organization.

The Arabs hate the Jews because the Jews father Jacob stole the Arabs father Esau' s birthright... So ultimately they want to rid themselves of the Jews period... And the rest of the Christian nations hate the Jews because they killed/crucified their King...
The Jews said let the guilt of killing an innocent Man ( and of course we believe that Man to be Christ) be upon their heads and their children, and their children's children head. That most assuredly seems to have come to pass and continues.
Strange to say though, it seems that the ones that control the world banking industries are Jews.
The BofM makes an interesting statement in that " what thank we the Jews" for all their travails in bringing us the words of God"...
Ultimately I think what has transpired starting with Orson Hydes 1840-41 dedication of the land of Isreal, onto today is in God's master plan...
But thus far they have not received Christ nor even believe that their " Messiah" has come yet.
It does not surprise me in the least that most of the world is against Isreal and will continue to be most likely until that great battle predicted in the bible....

Brigham Young made an interesting statement that the Gospel will not be preached to the Jews, Period.....

JofD 2:141:
Jerusalem is not to be redeemed by the soft still voice of the preacher of the Gospel of peace. Why? Because
they were once the blessed of the Lord, the chosen of the Lord, the promised seed. They were the people from
among whom should spring the Messiah; and salvation could be found only through that tribe. The Messiah
came through them, and they killed him; and they will be the last of all the seed of Abraham to have the
privilege of receiving the New and Everlasting Covenant. You may hand out to them gold, you may feed and
clothe them, but it is impossible to convert the Jews, until the Lord God Almighty does it.....
Jerusalem is not to be redeemed by our going there and preaching to the inhabitants. It will be redeemed by
the high hand of the Almighty. It will be given into the possession of the ancient Israelites by the power of
God, and by the pouring out of His judgments. The ground where you can sow the good seed, and where it
will yield crops that you can gather, is outside of that where the ancient Apostles and Prophets labored. They
had the light and power of God with them; and made manifest the hand of the Almighty in delivering the
people and working miracles, and saving those that were redeemed; and the people who are the most ready to
receive the Gospel are those who have lived without it from the days of Noah to this time....

Trump says US ‘foolishly spent $7 trillion in the Middle East’
US President Donald Trump said Friday it was time to focus funds on the US rather than foreign spending, tweeting: “After having foolishly spent $7 trillion in the Middle East, it is time to start rebuilding our country!”

The tweet came a day after Trump suffered a defeat at the United Nations General Assembly, which easily passed a resolution condemning his administration’s recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.

Trump had warned before the vote that the US could punish recipients of foreign aid who voted against the US at the General Assembly. On Wednesday he said countries “take hundreds of millions of dollars and even billions of dollars, and then they vote against us.

“Well, we’re watching those votes. Let them vote against us, we’ll save a lot. We don’t care.”

It was not clear whether Friday’s tweet was in reference to this threat, as the full text focused on the need for bipartisan support for investment in infrastructure.

At some point, and for the good of the country, I predict we will start working with the Democrats in a Bipartisan fashion. Infrastructure would be a perfect place to start. After having foolishly spent $7 trillion in the Middle East, it is time to start rebuilding our country!

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) December 22, 2017

Of the top 10 beneficiaries of US assistance this year, only Israel voted “no” at the General Assembly — unsurprising, given that Israel’s government is overjoyed by Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem.

I hope Trump pulls most the funding from these countries and uses it to help America and Americans. Far too long has this money been abused.

In Christmas Message Aimed at Trump, Abbas Says Palestinians Will Never Accept Any Peace Plan From U.S.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas came out Friday against the American peace initiative and said the Palestinians would not accept any plan made by the Americans due to U.S. President Donald Trump's decision to recognize Jerusalem, a move that was widely rejected by the world in a UN vote Thursday.
In a Christmas letter to Christians, Abbas wrote that the Palestinians will not "accept any plan from the U.S." due to the White House's "biased" support of Israel and its settlement policy. He also said the American plan "is not going to be based on the two-state solution on the 1967 border, nor is it going to be based on international law or UN resolutions."

Abbas’ letter was sent as he met with French President Emmanuel Macron, at the end of talks he held in Saudi Arabia as part of the international contacts the Palestinians conducted in response to Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem.

During a news conference in Paris, Abbas urged France and Europe to play a stronger role in peace efforts, saying the U.S. "no longer an honest mediator in the peace process."
Trump should say, fine we don't negotiate with terrorists. Like May, Macron has been placed by the elites to rule their countries. All the pieces are falling into place.

US to the UN: Go ahead and try to tell us how to handle Jerusalem, 'we don't care'
The UN General Assembly passed on Thursday a condemnation of President Donald Trump's decision to move the US embassy in Israel to Jerusalem.

The resolution was nonbinding, and the UN has no authority to dictate US policy. Both major US political parties have intended to move the embassy to Jerusalem since 1995.

Before the vote, the US ambassador to the UN sent letters to 180 countries telling them if they voted against the US, their funding might get cut.

"Let them vote against us. We'll save a lot. We don't care," the US said of the vote.

Haley said the vote will make no difference in U.S. plans to move the American Embassy, but it "will make a difference on how Americans look at the U.N., and on how we look at countries who disrespect us in the U.N."

"And this vote will be remembered," she warned.

The Trump administration made it clear the vote would have no effect on its plan to move the American Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. And Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said afterward that he completely rejects the "preposterous" resolution.
Really liking the Trump administrations attitude towards the UN. It's about time someone put them down a notch or two.

Guatemala says Jerusalem embassy move is final
Guatemala's foreign minister says her country's decision to move its embassy in Israel to Jerusalem is final, urging the international community to "respect" this commitment.

"It's a decision that has been made ... It is not going to be reversed," Sandra Jovel told journalists on Friday, according to a report from the AFP news agency.

"The Guatemalan government is very respectful of the positions that other countries have taken, and as we are respectful of those decisions, we believe others should respect decisions made by Guatemala."

Romania to move its embassy in Israel to Jerusalem
Romania is ready to break ranks with the European Union and relocate its embassy in Israel to Jerusalem.

The leader of Romania's ruling Social Democrats said the government had approved a memorandum to move its embassy in Israel, one of the first countries to do so after the United States.

Under Romanian legislation, President Klaus Iohannis would have the final say.

He said he had not been consulted yet.

On Thursday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that "at least half a dozen" countries were considering moving their embassies from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

The U.S. Embassy is due to relocate on May 14.

Paraguay's president: 'We'll move our embassy to Jerusalem'
Paraguay's President Horacio Cartes announced on Friday his plan to move his country's embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

Cartes didn't specify the exact date for the embassy's change in location, but he did say it would happen by the end of the government's term, which is drawing to a conclusion with the election of a new president.

Cartes made the announcement during the celebratory event marking Israel's 70th Independence day, which was attended by Israel's Ambassador to Paraguay Ze'ev Harel and Paraguay's President elect Hugo Velázquez.

It is unclear if the decision is coordinated with the president elect.

Israeli forces kill dozens in Gaza as U.S. Embassy opens in Jerusalem
GAZA/JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israeli troops shot dead dozens of Palestinian protesters on the Gaza border on Monday when the high-profile opening of the U.S. embassy to Israel in Jerusalem raised tension to boiling point after weeks of demonstrations.

In the bloodiest single day for Palestinians since 2014, Palestinian Health Ministry officials said 55 protesters were killed and 2,700 injured either by live gunfire, tear gas or other means.

The bloodshed drew calls for restraint from some countries, including France and Britain, and stronger criticism from others, with Turkey calling it “a massacre”.

The White House declined to join in urging Israel to exercise caution and pinned the blame squarely on Gaza’s ruling Hamas group, backing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu who described the Israeli military’s actions as self-defense of his country’s borders.

In siding squarely with Israel, Washington put distance between itself and its European allies for the second time in a week, after angering France, Germany and others last Tuesday by abandoning an international nuclear deal with Iran.

In contrast to the violent scenes in Gaza, Israeli dignitaries and guests attended a ceremony in Jerusalem to open the U.S. Embassy following its relocation from Tel Aviv.

The move fulfilled a pledge by U.S. President Donald Trump, who in December recognized the holy city as the Israeli capital.

Netanyahu thanked Trump for “having the courage to keep your promises”.

Palestinians seek East Jerusalem as the capital of a state they hope to establish in the occupied West Bank and the Gaza Strip.

Israel regards all of the city, including the eastern sector it captured in the 1967 Middle East war and annexed in a move that is not recognized internationally, as its “eternal and indivisible capital”.

Most countries say the status of Jerusalem - a sacred city to Jews, Muslims and Christians - should be determined in a final peace settlement and that moving their embassies now would prejudge any such deal.

Peace talks aimed a finding a two-state solution to the conflict have been frozen since 2014.
The media keeps making Israel look like the bad guys. Hamas and the Palestinians have become a warsome people intent on taking land that isn't theirs. Sounds like the Lamanites in the Book of Mormon to me. Israel has the right to defend their borders from attack and I'm glad to see that Trump and the United States has once again backed Israel.

That's racist, and colonialists, and whatever other names we can call them.

And also the poor arabs are not and cannot be responsible for their own economic well being. The Jews are just oppressing them and not letting them earn a living.

Good points...I love how they call them protesters and they are mostly well armed with any kind of weapons available. Also to have 2,700 wounded that implies they were a resistance army not a peaceful gathering. That's too many to even classify as a mob.
