That being said, I too believe that we will experience many calamities that will prepare us to meet the Savior. I think that one of the things that will help prepare us to meet Him will be the physical destruction of much that makes us unprepared to meet Him now.

This pattern has been established as with the Israelites being removed from Egypt- like someone else posted. The destruction of the cities in the America’s before the Savior appeared to the Nephites.

My top 3 votes are- plague: starting in Salt Lake area. EMP/Nuke: Electronics no longer the having a hold on the people’s minds [along with total destruction of all Internet/electronically viewed porn], Economic Collapse: All enterprise ceases, revolutions take place, and infrastructure breaks down.

tmac wrote:Not long ago someone posted something about the research they had done about the history of the United Order in Orderville, where it was the most successful and lasted the longest. My wife's family is from that area, so it was something I could relate to. One of the biggest reasons the United Order worked there for so long was that about 20 families in Orderville had first been part of the Muddy Mission in southeast Nevada, which was a complete failure, based on the natural conditions, including extreme heat and drought, and where after years of hard work and extreme privation, they left with nothing, and were assigned to go to Orderville. One of the biggest reasons the United Order worked there was because of that block of families who had been extremely humbled, and had experienced extreme deprivation to the point that they were thankful for anything and everything, and never complained about anything. They learned to have faith that the Lord would provide, and depended completely on Him. I don't think any of us have yet experienced what they did. But if/when we do, it will provide an opportunity for a similar cleansing experience from which we will emerge better people.
I missed that one, but that's really interesting.

I really doubt the Second Coming is delayed because of us specifically, HOWEVER, Zion is delayed because of us. We could have it right now if there were enough of us who could live a Celestial order. Many of us will have to go through the privation that the Orderville people did, and I suspect that's heading toward us like a freight train, and it's right on schedule...

Good point Gruden. Pontius' point was that JS and the early saints expected the Second Coming in their lifetimes, but it didn't/couldn't happen, because they were not willing to live celestial laws and establish Zion (recognizing that God knew this is the way it would be). His further point is that the Second Coming will not happen now until a sufficient number of people become Zion people individually, so that Zion can be established collectively, and that Christ will come when Zion is established. This time, though, when the time comes (which is really what the big debate timing-wise is all about) the Lord is going to be prepared to do what it takes to jerk the slack out of us to help accelerate that process -- since for the most part we don't seem to be willing and able to do it voluntarily and on our own.

The Lord gave His reasons why the saints in Joseph’s day were not able to establish the City of Zion.

54 And your minds in times past have been darkened because of unbelief, and because you have treated lightly the things you have received—
55 Which vanity and unbelief have brought the whole church under condemnation.
56 And this condemnation resteth upon the children of Zion, even all.
57 And they shall remain under this condemnation until they repent and remember the new covenant, even the Book of Mormon and the former commandments which I have given them, not only to say, but to do according to that which I have written—
58 That they may bring forth fruit meet for their Father’s kingdom; otherwise there remaineth a scourge and judgment to be poured out upon the children of Zion.

The Lord will lift the condemnation upon each of us personally when we each do what verses 57 and 58 state. There are people within the church who are determined to do this and many who have had the condemnation lifted through the grace of God. I, as we all, I am sure, am striving to accomplish this great set of blessings and thus be prepared to help in the building of Zion when the time comes. It will require a large enough group of people who are worthy to live in the presence of Jesus Christ, for He will walk the streets of Zion once it is built, to begin the building process. When enough of the current and future saints are able to do that, then and only then can Zion be built. The cleansing of the church and the western hemisphere will prepare enough people to be that pure and clean before the Lord. As another person alluded to, this will not be pleasant experience for any of us. May God have mercy on our souls! :)

The following quote tells us the day will come when we will need to rely upon the Lord and be prepared spiritually and physically. It seems that counsel from leaders will not be available as it is now. Thus we need to trust completely in the Lord or we will not stand.

"Let me say to you, that many of you will see the time when you will have all the trouble, trial and persecution that you can stand, and plenty of opportunities to show that you are true to God and his work. This Church has before it many close places through which it will have to pass before the work of God is crowned with victory. To meet the difficulties that are coming, it will be necessary for you to have a knowledge of the truth of this work for yourselves. The difficulties will be of such a character that the man or woman who does not possess this personal knowledge or witness will fall. If you have not got the testimony, live right and call upon the Lord and cease not till you obtain it. If you do not you will not stand.

Remember these sayings, for many of you will live to see them fulfilled. The time will come when no man nor woman will be able to endure on borrowed light. Each will have to be guided by the light within himself. If you do not have it, how can you stand? Do you believe it?

How is it now? You have the First Presidency, from whom you can get counsel to guide you, and you rely on them. The time will come when they will not be with you. Why? Because they will have to flee and hide up to keep out of the hands of their enemies. You have the Twelve now. You will not always have them, for they too will be hunted and will have to keep out of the way of their enemies. You have other men to whom you look for counsel and advice. Many of them will not be amongst you, for the same reason. You will be left to the light within yourselves. If you don't have it you will not stand; therefore seek for the testimony of Jesus and cleave to it, that when the trying time comes you may not stumble and fall." [Orson F. Whitney, Life of Heber C. Kimball, pp.450-451]

When the saints are called upon to gather to the tops of the mountains or wherever they are individually inspired to gather, the enemies of the church, in most cases former members then apostates, will seek to close in around the saints. Third Nephi chapters 1-10 will be repeated according to President Ezra Taft Benson before Christ comes again. It will be a day of darkness and just when all seems lost, Christ comes. The Nephites who survived the cleansing of the western hemisphere two thousand years ago did so because they were the more righteous ones of the overall group. Nephi could not communicate with them and they could not see him for the three days of darkness but each had to rely on the Lord alone. The challenges we must face ahead will try the faith of all of us. The guidance of the Holy Ghost will be all that we will have to help us choose the right. We will come to know, as they did, that ONLY Christ can save us. The sooner we realize this daily in our lives the better prepared we will be when the darkness gathers all around. Where were you when the lights went out? The Holy Ghost speaks the words of Christ. May each of us learn through the trials of life to depend upon the Son of God and no one else. :)

I am reading a book called the Savior's prophecys by Richard D Draper and it talks about what happens to them during the time the Jews were being killed in the year 70 AD and our time. It is interesting to note that those who were Christians at that time were heeding those words and were prepared and left before this calamaties had happened while those who were left behind were either killed or were sold as slaves. And the Savior left a message that would be the same way and I found that to be interesting.

If you would've told church members in Joseph's or Brigham's day that the Second Coming had not come by 2012, they would've been shocked. During the 2008/2009 meltdown I thought we would've had full collapse by 2010, but they managed to paper that over and delay it for the time being.
I suspect there are aspects of the cleansing members won't be expecting. I find the "bring it on" attitude that exists to be unsettling. I don't think we fully appreciate what's coming. It will come - no reprieve. We're just being more than a little overeager.
That reminds me of a WW2 movie scene about American military teenagers anxious about attacking and killing Japanese.

I'd been expecting much more much faster. I'm surprised with how slow it's going, and was pretty shocked when Elder Ballard talked about church membership projections for 2070 or such... /:)

OUCH! Everyone running around and hiding, worse than with polygamy. Should we be building places of refuge...? Time to search "build secret rooms" or such and get to work, eh?

I read this today, and I think that Moroni has given us a HUGE clue regarding the last days.

Mormon 9:24 And these signs shall follow them that believe—in my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; they shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing it shall not hurt them; they shall lay chands on the sick and they shall recover;

Moroni is speaking to us who have received the Book of Mormon. I can't think of any major event involving the drinking of something deadly and having the Priesthood to heal them.

I instantly thought of Elder Oaks talk in GC "Healing the Sick". There seems to be alot of talks recently on utilizing the "Power" of the Priesthood and not just having the Priesthood.

If Moroni put this in there to us, it must be very pertinent to be that specific.

Maybe in America, but are we there yet? Or are we still back in Helaman 8 or so?

I definitely think we are experiencing pieces of Helaman 8-11. I can't say that we are in a specific chapter but I see evidence of all those types of things in chapters 8-11 occurring today.

I don't know to tell you the truth but my mom's Patriarchal Blessing says she will see signs of the Last Days pertaining to the Second Coming. I've also been told by other people that their PB says the same thing. I do believe I'll see a nuclear attack in our land though. Maybe a epidemic virus too

We are already seeing signs of the Last Days! Many prophecies are already fulfilled or are being fulfilled. There actually isn't many signs left that need to be fulfilled before the Second Coming...

The fulfillment of Daniel 8:14 which reads : "14 And he said to him: Unto evening and morning two thousand three hundred days: and the sanctuary shall be cleansed."

Link to the Book of Daniel : https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?s ... ersion=DRA

There are many other prophecies being tried, too, as per the Old Testament imperative, "Try me in this."

Because the ascertainment of Ascension Sunday, May 8, 2016 A.D. is the 1,335th day of Daniel 12:12, which contains words of blessing, such blessing includes the Judgment (Final Judgment).

Daniel 12:12 : "12 Blessed is he that waiteth and cometh unto a thousand three hundred thirty-five days."

Yep. We’ve got about 10% left of Last Days prophecies left to fufill. I think that when the BoM is talking about the last days, it’s 99% about where we are night now, and 1% for the tribulations.
