Was Hitler's Germany liberal in the beginning and fascist towards the end or vice verse? Was it left wing or right wing ideology? Darwinism? Please if you could post sources.

I know all about what history books our teachers have told us to think I want the truth. To dig deeper.

Debate between an old friend and I here is his stance on it. As someone who has extensively studied nazism and fascism from a historical academic standpoint... no, just no. Nazism is a right-wing ideology based on a perverted understanding of Darwinism, that the human race can keep evolving into super-beings if 'weak and undesirable' elements are purged from the human gene-pool. There was a large group of ethnic Germans who felt emasculated by the Weimar Republic's surrender during WW1 (a war they felt they were still in the running to win at the time of surrender), alongside the mass entry of immigrants from the broken Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian empires after the war. Additionally Germany was severely punished economically in the 1920s by (primarily) France and England, who demanded unrealistic reparations for financial losses encountered during the war. Therefore, many German's were attracted to the idea of purging new immigrants from their homeland, purging the Jews - who they blamed for Germany's surrender in WW1, and opportunistically re-militarizing while the U.S., Great Britain and France were preoccupied with the global economic depression. Nazism is rooted in extreme nationalism and militarization, and motivated by a desire to reclaim the greatness that Germany had had before the humiliating defeat of WW1. The rise of Nazism is directly a product of its time and place in 20th century world politics and it will never be directly reproduced in any shape or form. That being said, if you're going to bash the 'evil' of liberalism, it would at least make more sense if you tried to draw comparisons to Stalin's USSR (an obvious abuse of leftist ideology) than it would to tread down the beaten path of Godwin's Law - that all internet arguments will, if given time, eventually make a comparison to the Nazi party or Hitler.

Left and Right mean different things in in Europe, versus here in the United States. Here in the United States, left means more government control/Socialism and right means more conservative/Libertarian - less government control.

Europe had pretty much given in to Socialism a century ago. So Left and Right in Europe means NATIONAL Socialism versus INTERNATIONAL socialism or Communism.

The name NAZI, in German stands for the National Socialist Workers Party. Therefor, they laid claim to the basic concept of socialism from the very beginning. Just like there is bitter in fighting between Sunni Muslims and Shia Muslims, there has been a lot of bitter fighting between National Socialists and Communists, even though the end result is similar.

Another slight difference, between Socialists versus Communists is that Communists believe that the government should OWN the means of production. Socialists believe in allowing private ownership of the means of production, just that the government tells the owners how much of what to make, how much to pay its workers, and how much it can sell its products for.

Bottom Line. The Nazi or National Socialist Workers Party was always what it was. It is considered "Right Wing" in Europe, because of the Nationalist part. Communists are considered "Left Wing" because of the international part. Also Communists believe in Government ownership of the means of production and Socialists believe in Government Control of the means of production. Both believe that "fairness" requires the government to take from the "rich" and give to the poor...You know, like Robin Hood.
