Utah: HB-322 for INDIVIDUAL Religious Liberty and right to ACT according to CONSCIENCE

Post by arlene »

We have tomorrow to contact our Senators and Representatives!

From Utah Eagle Forum:

Just Two More Days and Then It Is Over!!
HB-322 for INDIVIDUAL Religious Liberty and right to ACT according to CONSCIENCE
See bill text here: http://le.utah.gov/DynaBill/dbill.js...&trackadd=true

WE STILL HAVE TIME!

We are hearing from legislators that your notes, emails and text messages are making this bill very important to them, but we need to keep it up! Representatives need to receive a steady stream of THOUSANDS of messages all throughout the day!!!

If you have not sent emails/text messages yet, PLEASE DO IT NOW!
If you have done that already, PLEASE CONTACT 10 OTHERS and ASK THEM TO DO IT TOO!!
OR COME TO THE CAPITOL TO HELP US GET NOTES IN!
(at this point, notes work BETTER than emails!)

IT'S NOT OVER YET! OUR MOST CONCENTRATED AND DEVOTED EFFORT IS NEEDED FROM NOW UNTIL THE LAST GAVEL AT 12:00 MIDNIGHT TOMORROW NIGHT (Thursday, March 12th)

PLEASE DO NOT TIRE OF THE EFFORT TOO SOON!
[/b]WE NEED YOU ALL TO DO YOUR PART BECAUSE WE WILL NOT LIKE THE CONSEQUENCES IF WE FAIL!

Since it is looking probable that anti-discrimination legislation will pass, it is more important than ever that we have strong Religious Liberty protection. The language in the anti-discrimination bill does not include religious liberty and rights of conscience for all of us as individuals!

If HB 322 does not pass there will be NO religious liberty protection
for individuals in the Utah Code.

Rep. Christensen will likely substitute HB322 before it is voted on. The new substitute will be simple and clear about the right of people to act in accordance with their deeply held religious beliefs. WHAT WE BELIEVE IS SO CENTRAL TO WHO WE ARE AS A PERSON!!! Government should never be allowed to force us to act in a way which violates our own conscience! To retain that right, WE MUST PASS HB-322!

Friends,
Please take time to read about HB 322 and then call your representatives and have them vote for this bill. We need to protect our religious freedoms and not allow a focal irreligous minority to destroy our freedoms.

Thanks
Allan Hales

RELIGIOUS LIBERTY vs ANTI-DISCRIMINATION:
We need HB-322 for individual religious liberty!!!

H.B. 322 Substitute -- Religious Liberty and Nondiscrimination Protections (Rep. Christensen, L.)

See bill text here: le.utah.gov/~2015/bills/hbillint/HB0322S01.pdf

On January 27th, 2015, the LDS Church held a press conference asking for "Accommodating the rights of all people—including their religious rights"
Elder Dallin H. Oaks in his talk for the Press Conference said, ". . those who seek the protection of religious conscience and expression and the free exercise of their religion look with alarm at the steady erosion of treasured freedoms that are guaranteed in the United States Constitution. Since 1791 the guarantees of religious freedom embodied in the First Amendment have assured all citizens that they may hold whatever religious views they want, and that they are free to express and act on those beliefs so long as such actions do not endanger public health or safety. This is one of America's most cherished and defining freedoms. Yet today we see new examples of attacks on religious freedom with increasing frequency.

Elder Oaks then gave 4 specific examples of individuals whose religious liberty was violated and he went on to say, ". . we urgently need laws that protect faith communities and individuals against discrimination and retaliation for claiming the core rights of free expression and religious practice that are at the heart of our identity as a nation and our legacy as citizens."

He identified 4 principles asserted by the LDS Church, the first 3 of which deal directly with right of conscience and liberty for all people:

"1. We claim for everyone the God-given and Constitutional right to live their faith according to the dictates of their own conscience, without harming the health or safety of others.

2. We acknowledge that the same freedom of conscience must apply to men and women everywhere to follow the religious faith of their choice, or none at all if they so choose.

3. We believe laws ought to be framed to achieve a balance in protecting the freedoms of all people while respecting those with differing values.

Elder Oaks concluded his remarks by saying, "We call on local, state and the federal government to serve all of their people by passing legislation that protects vital religious freedoms for individuals, families, churches and other faith groups while also protecting the rights of our LGBT citizens . ."

This is why we are so vigorously supporting Rep. LaVar Christensen's HB-322 Religious Liberty and non-discrimination! It includes this language:

992 (4) "Religious liberty" means the free expression and exercise of religion and rights of

993 conscience, as recognized and established in the Utah Constitution since statehood, including

994 acts or refusals to act that are substantially motivated by sincerely held religious beliefs, duties,

995 principles, practices, or other such honest convictions.

HB-322 is a non-discrimination bill that also enacts

The Religious Liberty Act which protects right of conscience!
We need to pass HB322 even if SB-296 should pass,
because SB-296 does NOT include individual protection of
religious conscience and expression for all individuals!

HB-322 came out of committee yesterday and will be voted on by the House in the next couple of days. It is important that we work, and work hard. This is what we need to do . .

1.SPREAD THE WORD -- get an action alert to EVERYONE within the sphere of your influence! Alert every group to which you belong.
2.CALL YOUR Representative -- leave phone messages AND keep calling until you can have an actual conversation with them. Tell them you are a constituent, and that anti-discrimination that does NOT protect your individual religious conscience is not acceptable! Tell them that we need HB-322 to protect you in your religious convictions!
3.EMAIL and TEXT EVERY Representative and tell them the same thing.
4.COME TO THE CAPITOL AND HELP US TALK TO REPRESENTATIVES FACE-TO-FACE! This kind of contact is SO important and helps us determine if we have the votes we need!
5.COME TO THE CAPITOL AND HELP US PAPER THE HOUSE WITH NOTES! When they know you actually took the time and made the effort to BE UP HERE, that makes a big impression!
6.If you are absolutely not to come to the Capitol, WRITE A SHORT LETTER, CONVERT IT TO PDF, AND SEND IT TO US! IF it is one-button printable, we can print it and send it in for you.
7.RIGHT NOW, TODAY, SEND A LETTER TO THE EDITOR OF ALL THE LOCAL PAPERS. We need people to understand that the bill that is being touted as the "Balance" bill is NOT what we are being told it is. IT IS NOT HELPFUL TO US AS INDIVIDUALS!

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, in all of your communication, indicate that you do NOT believe in discrimination! We are NOT advocating that any person be treated with anything but respect! But we ARE ALARMED by stories of court cases from all across the country, shore to shore, where religious people have been forced to act contrary to their deeply held religious belief or suffer unbearable consequences!

It is our religion that makes us a loving people! But our religious belief is the inner soul that makes us who we are, and we can't give that up to grant wishes to a small minority whose behavior offends our religious and moral compass!

THIS IS AN UPHILL BATTLE AND WILL REQUIRE ALL OF OUR EFFORT!

IF WE WANT IT, WE MUST FIGHT, FIGHT, FIGHT FOR IT!

CALL YOUR OWN
Representative!

(make sure they know you are a constituent!)

Find out who your Rep. is with contact info here: le.utah.gov/GIS/findDistrict.jsp)

EMAIL AND TEXT all Representatives!

(see contact info below)

Ask them to vote YES on HB-322!

TELL THEM THAT SB-296 IS NOT SUFFICIENT --

THAT SB-296 IS NOT THE BALANCE THAT WE NEED --

THAT WE NEED HB322 TO PROTECT US IN OUR RELIGIOUS BELIEFS!

GOOD NEWS! HB-322 PASSED THE HOUSE 54-21!!
It is going to take all of our effort to get it through the Senate

WE NEED EVERYONE TO ENGAGE!!

This is, by far, the most important bill of the Session! If you do only one thing for the Session, IT MUST BE THIS! It demands ALL of our focus and ALL of our efforts!

HB-322 Religious Liberty Act (Rep. LaVar Christensen)

see bill text here: le.utah.gov/~2015/bills/static/HB0322.html

•It defines a "Person" protected by the Act as an individual, a closely held business, a religious institution or subsidiary or afflilliate or representative, an expressive association, or an independent education association that expresses relgious and moral principles (LINES 148-157)

•It reaffirms religious liberty as an inherent, inalienable, natural right guaranteed by the US and state constitutions and affirms the right to freely choose and practice faith and religious belief free from government acts with the expression and exercise of rights of conscience recognized and protected (LINES 160-17

PLEASE DO NOT TIRE OF THE EFFORT TOO SOON!

WE ALL MUST DO OUR PART BECAUSE WE WILL NOT LIKE THE CONSEQUENCES IF WE FAIL!

Since anti-discrimination legislation passed last night, it is IMPERATIVE that we pass strong Religious Liberty protection.

The language in the anti-discrimination bill does NOT include religious liberty and rights of conscience for all of us as individuals!

If HB 322 does not pass there will be NO religious liberty protection
for individuals in the Utah Code.

HB322 is simple and clear about the right of people to act in accordance with their deeply held religious beliefs. WHAT WE BELIEVE IS SO CENTRAL TO WHO WE ARE AS A PERSON!!! Government should never be allowed to force us to act in a way which violates our own conscience! To retain that right, WE MUST PASS HB-322!

CONTACT REPUBLICAN MEMBERS OF THE SENATE (see contact info below)

Email, Text, Tweet . . . BUT BEST OF ALL, COME TO THE CAPITOL AND SEND IN BLUE NOTES!

SPEND THE DAY GETTING THE WORD OUT TO OTHERS! WE NEED EVERYONE PARTICIPATING! This is a time when sending emails for ourselves alone will not be enough -- they need to be receiving a steady stream of thousands of messages

There are 3 possible scenarios . . .

1.We fail to do enough and the Senate ignores HB322. In that case it will DIE at midnight tonight. WE CAN'T LET THAT HAPPEN!

2.We fail to do enough and the Senate votes it down because they feel that SB-296 with protections for religious institutions is sufficient. WE CAN'T LET THAT HAPPEN!

3.We push other duties off until tomorrow so that we can work, work, work to help Senators see that dire need and overwhelming support for HB-322 and it passes! AT THE END OF THE DAY, LET US BE ABLE TO SAY THAT WE TRULY DID ALL IN OUR POWER TO SECURE FOR OURSELVES THE SAME RELIGIOUS LIBERTIES THE PILGRIMS AND THE SAINTS SACRIFICED EVERYTHING TO SECURE!
