HOMESCHOOL (or any educational) resources!

Post by Kitkat »

I thought it would be a great idea to share educational resources for children (not just for homeschool). If you have some great educational resources you think we all could benefit please share them here!

These are my ABSOLUTE favorite online homeschool resources for young children. Even if you don't homeschool you should check these out.

1. http://handwritingpractice.net/handwriting/index.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

This allows you to create handwriting practice for children (you can do print, cursive, or d'nealian). I use it to write fun "secret" handwriting messages to my little girls who are learning to read. They love it. Sometimes I do jokes, fun messages about them, I ask the questions, give them fun instructions (like... See mom for a free sticker!) whatever gets them reading and writing! The best part is....IT IS FREE.

2, STARFALL (reading and mathematics)

http://www.starfall.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

You might already know about this one, but we LOVE LOVE LOVE it. It has about half the website that is free which is amazing, but then you can pay for more (which we did because the content is so great) It is fun, interactive and easy for toddlers and preschoolers. It also has a math section. WARNING...you will be singing the silly songs and so will your kids.

3. ReadingEggs and MathSeeds

http://readingeggs.com/trynow/?utm_sour ... 1451494649" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

This costs 34.00 a year, but is well worth it (it also gives you a free 2 week trial)

I cannot say how AWESOME this program is for teaching kids to read. They learn all their letters and sounds and get to be a basic reader (about midway through first grade level). It is a fun program with points they can earn and lots of fun songs.

The math part is even better, if I dare say that. Even my older kids will come and watch the littles ones do their lessons because they are so engaging. It teaches math basics and gets them into second grade level. They are still developing it this program, so we get new content every 6 weeks.

I'll post more as I have the time :)

ONLINE PIANO LESSONS

https://www.hoffmanacademy.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

These are great lessons! They start out right away teaching you a little song so you feel successful day one. They are completely free. There is an option to download worksheets and sheet music if you want to, but it is not necessary. You can register or just use the lessons as a guest. Great beginning piano. It teaches up through the basics of playing with two hands and reading the music.

TYPING LESSONS FOR KIDS

http://www.typinginstructorkids.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

These have really helped my kids improve their typing. Lots of typing games and activities. My son went from no typing skills to typing 45 WPM in one year practicing every other day. You can purchase this online or as an app in the app store. It is a one time fee in the app store, but costs annually on their website.

Teachers Pay Teachers

https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

This is such a cool idea! Teachers pay each other for the stuff they make. Great lesson plans and such. Lots of things are free, but you can get great value out of the stuff you pay for too. The money then goes to the teacher who made the worksheet or lesson plan.

These are all the things that are free!

MY TECH HIGH

https://mytechhigh.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

So.... this is a homeschooling program you can sign up for FOR FREE if you live in UTAH.

They teach the kids technology skills and offer other courses. You have to get on a waiting list (so you would apply now for the next school year)

They offer you $300.00/child each year to spend on technology (computers, ipads, anything techy) and they offer a variety of technical classes (my kids are taking rocketry, 3d animation, drawing and sculpting, and computer programming fundamentals) and then they give you 150.00 per child to spend on math courses, 150.00/child to spend on Reading/LA courses and 150.00/child to spend on science and social studies.

You are required to log in once a week and submit 2-3 sentences of what your child has been doing in each subject. So far we really like it. They also have lots of field trips and such you can go on with the school. All classes are online and you have an instructor, but all the work and assignments can be done from home.

We like http://www.abcya.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; - it's free, pre-K through 5th grade math, phonics, reading, writing and mainly in the form of fun games
and http://allinonehomeschool.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; This is a free Christian online curriculum for kindergarten - 8th grade and then she has the high school level on a separate webpage

Another all time favorite is a app called EPIC

https://www.getepic.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

It is an online library for kids. It costs 7.00/month, but they offer a free 1 month trial. We read so many books at our house this is well worth the price. It has books for kids up to 12 years.

They have THOUSANDS of books. Many of them have the "read to me" feature, which is awesome for kids who can't read yet and they are very well done. It really is like being able to visit the library instantly! I love it.

Looking at their website It says it is 100% free if you are an educator. I am not sure if being a home educator counts...:), but I think it should.

kid pix deluxe 3d

We used this program when I was an educator. I always knew I wanted to use it with my own kids. It is an AMAZING program my kids always come back to. You can buy it from the APP store (it looks like there might be a free trial out there somewhere) --It is pricey (39.99), but there is so much you can do with it.

It allows you to create movies, stories, books, drawings, animations, add sounds and backgrounds, essentially you can create endlessly! It is a great all-in-one creative program for kids of all ages. My kids would play with it for hours if I let them. It has been well worth the money :)
