Dear Future Husband

Post by iWriteStuff »

I've never been a fan of whatever's on the radio, but I was stuck in a car for three hours with a troop of scouts and this song came across the radio:
"Dear Future Husband"

Dear future husband,
Here's a few things
You'll need to know if you wanna be
My one and only all my life

(Awwwww)
Take me on a date
I deserve it, babe
And don't forget the flowers every anniversary
'Cause if you'll treat me right
I'll be the perfect wife
Buying groceries
Buy-buying what you need

You got that 9 to 5
But, baby, so do I
So don't be thinking I'll be home and baking apple pies
I never learned to cook
But I can write a hook
Sing along with me
Sing-sing along with me (hey)

You gotta know how to treat me like a lady
Even when I'm acting crazy
Tell me everything's alright

(Awwwww)
Dear future husband,
Here's a few things you'll need to know if you wanna be
My one and only all my life
Dear future husband,
If you wanna get that special lovin'
Tell me I'm beautiful each and every night

After every fight
Just apologize
And maybe then I'll let you try and rock my body right
Even if I was wrong
[Laugh] You know I'm never wrong
Why disagree?
Why, why disagree?

You gotta know how to treat me like a lady
Even when I'm acting crazy
Tell me everything's alright

Dear future husband,
Here's a few things
You'll need to know if you wanna be
My one and only all my life (hey, baby)
Dear future husband,
Make time for me
Don't leave me lonely
And know we'll never see your family more than mine

I'll be sleeping on the left side of the bed (hey)
Open doors for me and you might get some kisses
Don't have a dirty mind
Just be a classy guy
Buy me a ring
Buy-buy me a ring, (babe)

You gotta know how to treat me like a lady
Even when I'm acting crazy
Tell me everything's alright

Dear future husband,
Here's a few things
You'll need to know if you wanna be
My one and only all my life
Dear future husband,
If you wanna get that special loving
Tell me I'm beautiful each and every night

(That's right!)

Oh-woah

Future husband, better love me right
I'm curious about your opinions of this song and its advice as Sisters in Zion. Are a few of these points on target? Are a few of them amiss? If so, which and why?

It sounds like a man ought to write a rebuttal of that song. I see lots of take but not a whole lot of give.

I don't suppose I could write any rebuttal song. But I do have to say, the first song that came to mind to me was Tammy Wynette's D.I.V.O.R.C.E.

Which means I will have to listen to Stand By Your Man now. Not really for the message, as much as the sheer power of her voice and the song.

David, I was thinking something along the lines of this. The "____" is where I wasn't sure what words to use or had no idea what to put in.

I thought a rebuttal song, meaning a similar song by a male, would show the self-centeredness of the original song.
"Dear Future Wife"

Dear future wife,
Here's a few things
You'll need to know if you wanna be
My one and only all my life

(Awwwww)
Take me on a _____
I deserve it, babe
And don't forget the ______ every anniversary
'Cause if you'll treat me right
I'll be the perfect husband
Buying a motorcycle
Buy-buying a motorcycle

You got that 9 to 5
But, baby, so do I
So don't be thinking I'll be payin' bills.
I never learned to budget
But I can bait a hook
Sing along with me
Sing-sing along with me (hey)

You gotta know how to treat me like a stud
Even when I'm acting crazy
Tell me everything's alright

(Awwwww)
Dear future wife,
Here's a few things you'll need to know if you wanna be
My one and only all my life
Dear future wife,
If you wanna get that special lovin'
_______ each and every night

After every fight
Just apologize
And maybe then I'll let you have some grocery money
Even if I was wrong
[Laugh] You know I'm never wrong
Why disagree?
Why, why disagree?

You gotta know how to treat me like a stud
Even when I'm acting crazy
Tell me everything's alright

Dear future wife,
Here's a few things
You'll need to know if you wanna be
My one and only all my life (hey, baby)
Dear future wife,
Make time for me to be with my best buds
Don't leave me lonely
And know we'll never see your family more than mine

I'll be sleeping on the left side of the bed (hey)
Don't complain about me and you might get some bills paid
Don't have a dirty house
Just be a classy girl
Buy me a Red Sox season ticket
Buy-buy me a Red Sox season ticket, (babe)

You gotta know how to treat me like a stud
Even when I'm acting crazy
Tell me everything's alright

I saw the self-centeredness of it. And the 'strange type of woman'-ness of it. The "I'm not a partner I'm a flower, or somthing" aspect of it.
But I ignored all that. Poetic license.
It's meant to be a song or a poem. So there's a lack of realness to it, of course.

Now, you mentioned motorcycles.
Well, now, there are men who constantly say "nice bike" "nice motorcycle" etc. Whom I usually ignore. Some say "I used to ride a ..." then I talk to them.
I also talk to those who talk about the journey or the road. "Be sure to stop here, or there ..."
A few say, and this is a direct quote "oh, nice motorcycle, I'd like to have one, but my wife wouldn't let me".
Now, I could say a lot of things there about them and their relationship with their wife. But what I usually say is "why not do what some of use do, get the wife to buy the motorcycle for you".
I think marriage should be a partnership. What kind of man would marry a woman who forbids, prohibits him from doing __________(whatever, but that which is not sin).

Let's hope that line that doesn't quite rhyme went over the scouts' heads! The first time I heard that song I was with my 12 year old daughter. So glad she didn't catch that. Of course I didn't want to call attention to it but it makes me cringe when she sings along.

My radios only get one station. KUSC. Beethoven, Bach, yes, all church music, all the time, Chopin, Brahms, et al.
So I have no idea that this was a real song.

My husband wanted to buy a set of golf clubs. Since he never let me buy anything I wanted, I told him I didn't think he should. He didn't buy the clubs. Then his friend gave him a set, a nice one too. We were both happy. I was even happier that we hadn't bought the clubs when the gifted set sat unused in the closet after being used once or twice.

Women and men probably shouldn't set any hard and fast rules for their future spouses.

I get the poetic license bit, but when people (especially kids) are exposed to the mentality of "it's how you can please me and I'm more important than you," instead of "what I would like to do for you" or "it's a full partnership with both freely giving," I think it can be detrimental to their future marriages and/or relationships.

Seems a lot of people these days have that mentality, I see it all the time with women having huge lists of expectations and requirements, and men not wanting to commit just wanting to have sex always (a fault I sadly have been guilty of), who'd want to commit anyway?
Both sides are insane.

My list was different...Dear future husband, You need to read and love your scriptures and pray every day night and morning. If you are temple loving and focused on serving the Lord and loving Him more than me, then our relationship will have a strong foundation. Oh, yes...if you can garden, that's really a bonus, and fix a leaky sink--that'll get you some "special lovin'!" But really, if you read scriptures with me and ask me to go to the temple every week, then we will really rock!

I think the only parallel in songs sung by men is a list of things they want to do to their one night stand.... I'm starting to think maybe the only thing men and women have in common (in the world, not church) is the degree to which their requirements/wish list for a partner differ.

Kinda scary.
