But 500 years ago, some religious reformers wanted to banish any ritual

Rituals have long provided an anchor to human experience by easing difficult transitions, celebrating significant spiritual milestones and cementing communities through shared traditions. But 500 years ago, some religious reformers wanted to banish any ritual that wasn't mentioned in the Bible. Here's why they were fighting a losing battle.

I can sympathize with their wanting to eliminate ritual. All they did though was look beyond the mark and swing that pendulum too far to the other side. A return to center where people understood ritual as 'not the real thing' and as a guide to the real thing would have been more productive. Too many movements are build on the extremes rather than the center and then you just get extremes, both with a mix of good and bad each poking at the bad parts of the other instead of just coming together on the good.
