Elder Poelman gave a talk. In this talk he basically states that the Gospel and the Church are two different but connected entities. He states right at the beginning that BOTH are true and divine, but in that statement makes it clear that they are two separate things.
There was concern that the talk could be misconstrued by anti-Mormons, those who did not have a full testimony of the church (Despite the first line), and those who wanted to justify not following the LDS church but stating they were following the Gospel as taught by the LDS church.
Elder Peolman was informed of this. He felt it was necessary to CLARIFY what he stated. It was not to change what he said, but to make it even MORE clear what he was stating so that one could NOT mistake or misconstrue.
What he stated was actually the same idea, but with clarity of the second (edit) in order to ensure understanding of his original intent (as was the first).
Hence, he had it rewritten and re-recorded. This had to have first presidency approval, which it appears it had.
The talks cover the same thing though, this is apparent by English 101. You cover what you are going to talk about in summary in the first sentence. You then summarize at the end. The first and the end are unchanged, it's only the supporting evidence that has been clarified. In short, using the beginning and end of both he states...
So we need to learn and apply the gospel while utilizing the resources of the LDS church. They are connected and essential to helping one develop in their testimony. However, the Lord is NOT the church, but through the church, one learns and applies the gospel and enables them to return to the Lord. Both the gospel of Jesus Christ and the Church of Jesus Christ are true and divine. .....
.....Gospel living is a process of continuous individual renewal and improvement until the person is prepared and qualified to enter comfortably and with confidence into the presence of God. My brothers and sisters, by inclination, training and experience, most of my life I have sought understanding by the accumulation of facts and the application of reason.
I continue to do so.
However, that which I know most surely and which has most significantly and positively affected my life I do not know by facts and reason alone, but rather by the comforting, confirming witness of the Holy Spirit. By that same Spirit I testify that God is our Father, the Jesus of Nazareth is the Only Begotten of the Father in the flesh and that he is the Savior and Redeemer of all mankind and each of us. Through his atoning sacrifice, redemption and exaltation are offered as a free gift to all who will accept by faith, repentance and sacred covenants.
May each of us continue to learn and apply the eternal principles of the gospel, utilizing fully and appropriately the resources of the divine restore Church. In the words of the Nephite leader Pahoran, "... may we rejoice in the great privilege of our church and in the cause of our Redeemer and our God." (Alma 61:14) In the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
Pretty simple message. Why is there a problem here, or do people have a problem with Peolman editing his talk to clarify it so that those who are opposed to the LDS church cannot misconstrue it to say something he did not intend?
It seems pretty simple overall to me.
