Temple Prep classes now give detail on aprons and secret temple names

Postby DEEPER storm » Wed Oct 11, 2017 3:47 pm

Instructor tells about the undergarments and how they're to be worn, and how to take care of them (do not leave them on the floor, etc.).

In addition, pictures of the temple robes and green apron are now shown, and you are now told how to wear them.

The initatory is also explained, though not the history of it, such as nudity.

Secret new names will be given to you in the temple, as well.

Is this a recent change?

I knew all this because my parents taught me as a teen. I always watched my mother carefully wash and iron their temple clothes before my parents would attend the temple. I was taught in family night about a new name to be given. (No details about the particulars, just that I would make a covenant and that there would be penalties for disclosing or breaking those covenants) I also was taught as a youth to respect temple garments, to wear them faithfully. When I wash or sort my laundry I never just throw them on the ground, rather a laundry basket is used.

Nope nothing new for me. (temple endowed over 30 years)

Where did you hear this? It doesn't seem real to jump from saying essentially nothing to saying so much. I don't mean to be skeptical that the Church is having teachers teach this in temple prep, but I absolutely am skeptical. I get that a rogue teacher might do this (and would expect him/her to be immediately released once higher levels of authority found out about it), but not that the Church would do this, especially so suddenly.

And if they teach it in temple prep class doesn't mean it should be talked about here.

I just reviewed the temple prep manual. There's mention of buying some garments to wear during and after (which was part of my temple prep class almost 30 years ago). There's mention of the ceremonial clothing (which I don't recall) and that's it. There was nothing about instructing people on wearing garments or ceremonial clothing, or anything else storm mentioned.

The church published pictures a few years ago, but I didn't find a mention of this in the manual.

You're lucky. I had been taught about the name, but the first I heard about respecting garments was from the temple president. And the first I heard about ceremonial clothing was when I looked in the "envelope" I was told I needed.

I almost didn't go on my mission because I was told that I needed an escort to go to the temple. I asked so many people but nobody was willing to accompany me to the temple, until I decided that I would only ask one last person. He expressed that he was already planning to go, leaving me doubting his enthusiasm. The temple is supposed to be a refuge, but when I'm stuck in a room with a big crowd of people accompanying someone to the temple for their first time it's a mountain of suck.

Darn it Brian; if anybody ever asked me to be their escort I would be honored! What an awesome experience that would be. So sorry. Although I have never had the experience of being an escort, I have been through the temple many times with family members who are going through for their first time. I love that. It always gives me a renewed perspective of pretending it is my first time and how it makes me feel right along side of them.

I'm not aware that there would be any new manual or other new instructions for temple prep class. However, since the video that church uploaded youtube (see the link in gkearney's post) shows the garments and the robes, I would say that it is totally okay to mention these in the class. I like the video. If I taught temple prep, I would show it to the class. I also think it is appropriate to tell at a general level what are the ordinances performed in the temple. Of course, there are some very specific things that we have covenanted not to disclose.

I didn't have temple prep before I went. I had almost no clue what I was walking into - My seminary teacher talked about getting a new name so I was aware of that.

I shared the church video to my oldest daughter a few months ago and she is 15, she had some questions. I find it better when they ask to share. My 10 year old was for some reason surprised when she found out Joseph Smith was married. I took it as an opportunity to explain that he also had many wives. Some things are sacred some things you need to break your kids into because the culture we live in is rude, crude and of the world. Holiness is not understood by most the world and that is why people go to the temple and are a little taken back at times.

I don't know that you missed much by not having a temple prep class. My class was pretty much all about preparing yourself for the temple. And reviewing the Endowed From On High manual I see little has changed.

The Temple is nothing but pure joy to me.

The live sessions are the best. I have no desire to watch a "movie" with all the "acting".

I like live sessions with live, real people. Yes, some of them are old, but so am I.

When I first went I had to turn down requests to guide me. I already had someone lined up.

I felt bad that I couldn't have more than one guide. Hey!! I just thought, maybe I could have done that!

Anyway, I love the Temple and real people in the Temple.

The bad thing about big sessions is they take longer. My first session was about 250 people. There were so many who couldn't get in, that they added a later session. I had invited everyone in the ward and some from the stake. Many showed up. But that was Los Angeles, Saturday night, and closing day, last day the Temple was open for a month.

It's somewhat of a long trip up to Salt Lake for me, but I think I'll do it. I need to buy some things and I just want to go up to the Temple.

I never liked live sessions because the actors stumbled over their words, however I did like going to the temple. For years, it was a place of peace for me-not necessarily the ordinances (though I did like them, in spite of them seeming a bit weird at first), but afterwards, sitting in the celestial room (or an adjoining sealing room in the days when that was allowed) praying.
