The Great Controversy - book

Post by MasterOfNone »

Has anyone read this book (written originally in 1888) and, if so, how reliable is it?

"The Great Controversy" was written by
Ellen G. White, one of the founders of
the Seventh-day Adventist Church and
held in esteem (by them) as a prophet
of God.

I read it several years ago and found it
interesting. The Seventh-Day Adventist
influence on the internet, especially
the teachings of this book, is more
prevalent than most people realize.

I'm open to the possibility that she may
have been a visionary woman. Many
people have visions and some of what
she wrote rang "true" with me. Much
of it did not.

Brigham Young had this to say about
teachings from other than "church-
approved" sources.

"I want to say to my friends that we
believe in all good. If you can find a
truth in heaven, earth or hell, it belongs
to our doctrine. We believe it; it is ours;
we claim it (DBY, 2)."

"Whether a truth be found with professed
infidels, or with the Universalists, or the
Church of Rome, or the Methodists, the
Church of England, the Presbyterians, the
Baptists, the Quakers, the Shakers, or any
other of the various and numerous different
sects and parties, all of whom have more
or less truth, it is the business of the Elders
of this Church (Jesus, their Elder Brother,
being at their head) to gather up all the
truths in the world pertaining to life and
salvation, to the Gospel we preach, … to
the sciences, and to philosophy, wherever
it may be found in every nation, kindred,
tongue, and people and bring it to Zion
(DBY, 248)."

If you've got the time and feel so inspired,
I think it is worth reading. Just use your
own discernment.

I'm sorry but this book is uninspired. If you want to believe the teachings of this false prophetess then maybe you should join with the Seventh Day Adventists or the Jehovahs Witnesses.

Good Luck.

lol. I do not have the book, nor am I likely to read it. The reason I asked is because someone I know (a Church member) recently received it anonymously through the mail. I said I'd find out about it for her and was too lazy to do the research online, so I thought someone here might know. I never knew it was from a founding member of the SDA.

Who were you directing your
remarks to, Luke?

Or did you just not completely
read or understand the posts
here?

Or are you just having a
bad day and need to
vent a wee bit?

It's OK...we all have those days. :D

Lots of people have visions, Luke.
That doesn't mean they're prophets,
nor was I even suggesting such.

If you've taken the trouble to read
any of my other posts, you know
very well where I stand.

I hope you're feeling better tomorrow.

Best Regards, :D
