Is there a way to be notified of new comments that have been made in a discussion thread without making a comment?

Sometimes there are things being discussed that I like to follow but I don't have much to add. I would like to be notified when a new comment is made. It seems the only way to do this is make a comment or post a "blank" comment and mark the notification box. Obviously I could bookmark the page and check back, but a notification seems easier.

There is. Scroll to the bottom of the thread you are interested in and click the Subscribe topic. You will start getting notifications. You can unsubscribe in the same way.
