Way back in the day, I used to hold the same view that you do now. Those were the trends and that's where it all leads.
There is no saviour coming to save us there is no Josephine that can save man from their sins, Elijah has already come, the work for the dead is in full swing..... Even Jesus when he was on the earth was unable to save but a hand full and they crucified him. We are told that what is coming is worse than has ever happened on this earth or any other earth - and it is different to what has ever happened before as it is a separation of the wheat from the tears. Look at the destruction among the nephites just prior to Jesus visiting them. Most of the men will be dead and 7 woman to one man....

The prophecies are sure we will not be able to buy and sell without the mark of the beast. The big cleansing is coming very few will survive.
Matt 24:5 When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:)
16 Then let them which be in Judæa flee into the mountains:
17 Let him which is on the housetop not come down to take any thing out of his house:
18 Neither let him which is in the field return back to take his clothes.
19 And woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give suck in those days!
20 But pray ye that your flight be not in the winter, neither on the sabbath day:
21 For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be.
22 And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect’s sake those days shall be shortened.
I don't believe that is referring to our times. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siege_of_ ... em_(AD_70)

It is most definitely referring to our times latter day prophets have used that scripture. Referring to desolation of abominations as being nuclear war. The old testament prophets spoke of it referring to the last days - Jesus was just quoting the prophecies. The D&C references abomination of desolation a few times. Jesus gave the comment in relation to his second coming.

Matt 24:3 ¶ And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world?

Elder Ezra Taft Benson, Conference Report, October 1961, Afternoon Meeting, p.69-70
The great destructive force which was to be turned loose on the earth and which the prophets for centuries have been calling the "abomination of desolation" is vividly described by those who saw it in vision. Ours is the first generation to realize how literally these prophecies can be fulfilled now that God, through science, has unlocked the secret to thermonuclear reaction.

Doctrine and Covenants 84:117 And verily I say unto you, the rest of my servants, go ye forth as your circumstances shall permit, in your several callings, unto the great and notable cities and villages, areproving the world in righteousness of all their unrighteous and ungodly deeds, setting forth clearly and understandingly the desolation of babomination in the last days.

Doctrine and Covenants 88:85 That their souls may escape the wrath of God, the desolation of abomination which awaits the wicked, both in this world and in the world to come. Verily, I say unto you, let those who are not the first elders continue in the vineyard until the mouth of the Lord shall call them, for their time is not yet come; their garments are not clean from the blood of this generation.

BD Abomination of desolation
Daniel spoke prophetically of a day when there would be “the abomination that maketh desolate” (Dan. 11:31; 12:11), and the phrase was recoined in New Testament times to say “the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet” (Matt. 24:15).

Thanks. I will reread that.

Remember the first Star Trek, the pilot episode, where Pike is captured and held by an alien race that had destroyed themselves through the ability to create its own reality in the mind? Art imitating our future perhaps.

LDS Anarchist wrote: November 13th, 2017, 2:49 pm The earth will quake and interplanetary thunder and lightning will be heard and seen, and tempests will go forth and the waves will heave beyond the sea bounds because of what is happening with the planets of this solar system, not because of any man-made weapons. Men's hearts will fail them because they won't be the cause of all this stuff. It will appear to be coming from the gods (the planets.)
Your interpretation is based on a scripture referring to thunder and lightning. In the BoM just prior to Jesus visited them there was a great storm that lasted 3 hours that had thunder and lighting.
Think of what the scripture It is saying, it is an abomination that makes desolate - a natural thunder storm with lighting is not an abomination and does not made desolate - is only very local destruction and no pollution associated with it - the earth is not left desolate.

If one reads verses 16-18 it talks about fleeing and if you are in the field ie away from home - do not return to take your clothes. Nuclear fall out makes much more sense. If your city or neighbourhood is nuked one won't be able to return, just have to flee with what is on your back. Your interpretation does not match the scripture and the Prophets interpretation is a perfect match, and many have seen it in vision. I am unconvinced with your explanation..... Interplanetary lightning does not match vs 16-17 and is not an abomination that makes desolate...
