The name of the Davidic Servant revealed!

Post by CHUCK »

It's JESUS CHRIST! :D

King David (c. 1000 B.C.) remains today one of the most renowned Old Testament figures. His personality, spiritual sensitivity, creative abilities, military victories, and leadership carried him to the pinnacle of popularity. He had the potential to become an ideal king, but his kingship deteriorated after his adultery with Bathsheba and his involvement in Uriah's death. However, prophecy states that a model ruler in the last days will be "raised up" from David's lineage.

The Prophet Joseph Smith taught that "the throne and kingdom of David is to be taken from him and given to another by the name of David in the last days, raised up out of his lineage" (TPJS, p. 339). Elder Orson Hyde, in his dedicatory prayer on the Mount of Olives, October 24, 1841, prophesied that the Jews would return to Jerusalem and that in time a leader called David, "even a descendant from the loins of ancient David, [would] be their king" (HC 4:457).

This predicted figure corresponds to a promised messianic servant. Hosea, speaking shortly before the loss of northern Israel, foretold that Israelites would return in the latter days "and seek the LORD their God, and David their king" (Hosea 3:5). Jeremiah prophesied of Israel and Judah's future righteousness, and of "David their king, whom I [the LORD] will raise up unto them" (Jer. 30:9; cf. 23:5; 33:15-22). And in Ezekiel it is written, "And I will set up one shepherd over them, and he shall feed them, even my servant David; he shall feed them, and he shall be their shepherd. And I the LORD will be their God, and my servant David a prince among them" (Ezek. 34:23-24; cf. also 44:1-3).

Speaking to Joseph Smith, the angel Moroni 2 cited Old Testament passages telling of significant figures who would be involved with Christ's millennial reign (JS—H 1:40). As prophesied in Isaiah, it appears that two persons are spoken of, a "rod" and a "root" (11:1, 10)—one a leader "on whom there is laid much power," the other a person with special priesthood keys (D&C 113:3-6). These leaders are believed by some to be two forerunners, spoken of in rabbinic literature, one from Joseph and one from Judah (Encyclopedia Judaica, 11:1411).

Although noble attributes and spiritual powers characterize both of these messianic servants, Jesus Christ exemplifies these qualities perfectly (D&C 113:1-2). Jesus is the exemplar prophet, priest, and king. He identified himself as the prophet "like unto Moses" (Deut. 18:15; Acts 3:22-23; 3 Ne. 20:23) and was a high priest after the order of Melchizedek (Heb. 5:9-10; 7:15-22). Jesus is King of Kings (Rev. 19:16), greater than all other leaders of all time. Some see in Jesus Christ the complete fulfillment of the prophecy of a future David. Others feel that, while the titles and functions of the future Davidic king could apply to Jesus, there will also be another righteous king by the name of David in the last days, a leader from the loins of David (and thus of Judah).

Strange, If the servant was Christ, why would he say, he will send his servant. Why wouldn't he just say I will come and do this work.
3 Nephi:21:
10 But behold, the life of my servant shall be in my hand; therefore they shall not hurt him, although he shall be marred because of them. Yet I will heal him, for I will show unto them that my wisdom is greater than the cunning of the devil.

11 Therefore it shall come to pass that whosoever will not believe in my words, who am Jesus Christ, which the Father shall cause him to bring forth unto the Gentiles, and shall give unto him power that he shall bring them forth unto the Gentiles, (it shall be done even as Moses said) they shall be cut off from among my people who are of the covenant.
This is Christ speaking, who says the servant's life will be in his hand. Christ says he will heal his servant. He plainly says,"my servant". How can your servant be yourself?

I think it pretty much rules out Christ as the servant.

The servant in 3 Nephi appears to be the same one mentioned in Isaiah.
Isiah 52:13 ¶Behold, my servant shall deal prudently, he shall be exalted and extolled, and be very high.

14 As many were astonied at thee; his visage was so marred more than any man, and his form more than the sons of men:

15 So shall he sprinkle many nations; the kings shall shut their mouths at him: for that which had not been told them shall they see; and that which they had not heard shall they consider
Some have made a case for a resurected Joesph Smith as the servant beacause of some unfilled prophecies about Joesph Smith.

Interesting. But I still have to disagree. I'll stick with Christ.

Came across this discussion. I'm not saying or implying anything but I am still trying to process this.

“LITTLE DAVID”

The following is an account of a vision I received in the winter of 1996. It is a vision that completely consumes my life and in all things it is an underlying force that assists me in making the majority of my life decisions. I was greatly disturbed at the situation that I had found myself in and I was reaching out to God in a way that I had never reached out to Him before. I was at the end of the rope. I was completely helpless, at the very pit of my life. I was utterly consumed with reading the Bible and in continuous prayer., seeking Gods forgiveness for the spirit of rebelliousness that had been in complete control for the majority of my life. I was searching the scriptures and praying continually and couldn’t seem to get enough. It was calling me as much as I was seeking it. One evening while I was laying on my bed reading my bible, all of a sudden it occurred to me that I was almost in a trance state. So consumed and focused on what I was reading and doing that nothing going on around me even had the slightest chance of drawing my attention from what I was doing, when all of a sudden I felt a warm, soft pressure upon my forehead and covering my eyes. As I was caught away in the spirit, my body still laying lifeless on the bunk with my Bible resting open across my chest, my spirit rested in an old house in which, from the feeling that I sensed, my former wife and I had occupied. My whole life, I had been raised up in a Protestant Christian setting and was only slightly familiar with the Mormon faith. My wife at the time, Jessica was considered Mormon, even though she rarely attended any services, unlike her family, which were very active in the Mormon church. By association, I had heard a little of the Mormon religion from her family and even more anti Mormon information from my side of the family. Apparently Jessica and I were in the house, but she was in another room. I seemed to be wearing only a pair of loose, dingy underwear that were nearly falling off of me. I felt helpless to do anything of the situation of my own so I was calling out for Jessica to help me. Calling out for her to bring me something to wear. Her family were soon to be arriving for some type of family function and I was nearly naked. I kept calling out to her but she kept responding as if my request were insignificant and that it was unnecessary. It was a very significant request to me. I was basically naked and they were to arrive any second. After receiving no help from her and not being able to help myself, I ran from the old home. I ran out to the edge of the yard by the road. There was a motorcycle there so I jumped on it and began riding down the hard road looking back at the old house as I was riding off. I remember that there was a dog chasing me that I was not familiar with. I remember just kicking at him as I rode away. I came to another old rickety home that seemed to not be occupied. It was off to the left side of the road. There were a couple of old vehicles that, from the appearance, surely hadn’t ran in quite sometime. The brush was all grown up around the house and the cars. I kept getting the feeling that someone was following me. Just watching me. I didn’t see anybody around. I walked up to the old, gray run down house. The type you would see in an old field that hadn’t been occupied for 50 years or better. It had a porch at the top of the old steps, so I walked up the steps onto the porch. That is when I heard the extremely powerful voice calling,” little David...come to Me”. The voice seemed to be coming from no particular direction, but from any and all directions. The voice wasn’t piercing loud, but it was so powerful that your insides seemed to reverberate. As I looked around, over near the car was a man. He was standing on the other side of the car that was further away from the porch than the other one. Over the hood I could see him standing there looking at me. Watching me. He was black as coal and was wearing a bright red, tight, rayon type t-shirt. His eyes were so white that they were spooky. As I was watching him, I heard the voice again calling, “ little David...come to Me”. I was scared to death. I did notice that the black man’s mouth wasn’t moving as I heard the voice. I couldn’t explain what was happening and that is probably what I feared more than anything. I did fear that the black man was following me and was watching me. I was afraid to even look away from him for fear that he would come closer. I was beginning to shake with fear as I heard the voice calling again, “ little David... I am the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, come to me”! As I was standing there trembling on the porch, the floor of the porch just gave way. I began to fall through the porch, but I noticed that the distance that I was falling through the porch was not proportionate to the height of the porch that I was on. As I fell through the porch, scared absolutely to death, I found myself in the arms of a very large man. He appeared to be some type of native. Almost like an Indian that I had seen before as a child on TV only much bulkier than the ones I had seen. More muscular for sure and just bulkier and heavier boned. More like an Hawaiian or some sort of island native. He had tan skin, dark hair that wasn’t long, but it wasn’t short either. He was only wearing a loin cloth and some type of band around the upper part of his bicep on his right arm. It all happened so fast that even to this day I am surprised that I can recall it in such detail. As I landed in his arms, I looked around and saw that we were in an empty room. There was a doorway across the room that only consisted of two wooden doorposts and a header across the top. Nothing fancy at all. Just timbers. I did notice that there was no door, so it could better be described probably as a threshold in which there was no seeing through. The room I was in was lit up somehow, but the other side of the threshold was dark. The native all of a sudden heaved me toward the threshold in the air. As I approached the threshold, scared not know now what to expect, I saw another native that had the same appearance as the first. Passing through the threshold, the other room seemed to light up. As the native caught me, I notice that the room could be best described as identical as to the first, with a dark threshold on the other side of the room. As the native caught me, having absolutely no expression on his face, he also heaved me toward the other dark threshold. The same process repeated itself probably 5 times as best as I can recall. Each time I was getting more and more fearful as to what to expect. Instead of feeling some type of peace that nothing significant had happened as yet, I was even more fearful because each process I felt was a count down that ended with a climax that I knew not what to expect. As the process of being hurled through the air came to an end, I notice that as I was passing through the final threshold, when the room lit up, it was not the same plane room as the rest had been. It appeared as a den. Warm like my ex-wife Jessica’s grandmother and grandfather’s house had been. It had a rich, dark, comforting feel to it. Real rich in family history. As if it contained many, many family memories in it. It felt that way, but I remember that the layout wasn’t exactly the same. As I looked across the room I saw a fireplace with a mantle. There were knickknacks all round the room, including on the base of the fireplace as well as on the mantle. Standing by the fireplace, leaning his right hand on the ledge of the wooden mantle was a man. It was a younger looking man that appeared to be maybe in his thirties. It is really hard to describe how old he was because he was dressed in what I assume was probably 1800 apparel. He had blonde hair that was rather long and pulled mostly back. It wasn’t real, real blonde, but it wasn’t what I would describe as a dirty blonde either. He was wearing a coat that was burgundy in color and he had under it, a white shirt that the ruffles or whatever they called it, rolling down from the collar of the shirt and disappearing into the V of the coat he was wearing. He had rather tight fitting pants on, if you can call them that. They were probably more like knickers, ending just at the top of the calf of the leg. They were black in color and he had on sheer white socks on and dressier, black shoes that had what today would be considered a high heal. Not like girls shoes or anything, but more like you would find on a boot or something. They were slip on. As I recall, I was so completely overwhelmed as to the events and fearful of the situation, as I entered the room the gentleman look from down at the fireplace to me. I remembering asking him, very loud and fearfully, “ are you God?” He gave no reply whatsoever, but acknowledged my question with the expression on his face and began turning his head over his left shoulder toward the other side of the room. At this time there is absolutely no words in my very limited vocabulary to describe the utter fear, complete powerlessness and total insignificance at that very moment. As I looked toward the gaze of the earlier gentleman, that now I know to be the prophet Joseph Smith, I saw an older gentleman stand on that side of the room. He had a very warm, welcoming smile on His face. It wasn’t a big smile by any sorts, but there was a slight smile and warm look on His face. He appeared to be dressed in normal attire. Dressed like I had seen my grandfather dress on innumerable occasions when he was going to church. No coat, but a long sleeve, white dress shirt, a tie and dress slacks. He had the look of maybe a mid 60 to 70 year look. His hair was thin and white and His face did have some wrinkles for sure, but by all accounts he was completely handsome! To be honest, He appeared to me to be what I would call perfect. There was a loving countenance that He possessed that completely dispersed all negativity. Just like when you know that your wife isn’t the most beautiful woman in the world in your mind, but through the eyes of a loving husband, she is the most beautiful being that has ever been born or will be born again! He was just beautiful and perfect. I often wonder if it was my love for Him that dispelled the negative featured (if that is even a real thing) or was it His love that had an impact upon the vision of my eyes, not allowing me to discern anything but beauty or what? I will probably not know until He desires for me to know. He looked at me in the soul and asked,” little David... why didn’t you come when I called you?” Immediately, trembling with fear, I said,” are you God? the only true God? the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob? the only true living God?” He respond with a simple smile of acknowledgement and stated, “I AM!” He stepped up to me and placed His right hand on my left shoulder. The feeling really of Him touching me is also nearly indescribable. His hand seemed to go deeper than just the surface of my skin on my shoulder, but to the inner most parts of the actual joint. Something like when you experience when you hit your funny bone on your elbow or something. It just completely has a paralyzing effect. My knees felt as if they could no longer stand on their own accord and the were sure to buckle at any moment, when He asked, “ little David... do you still have your testimony?” Before I could even really process the question He had just asked, much less respond, the floor of the room began to have the appearance of a shiny liquid. Something like liquid mercury or maybe even a “sea of glass?” I fell down through the liquid floor and as I fell I found myself in a room. A room that was like a preparatory room that to the left, had a baptismal font. I noticed that there was an old woman that was on a walker and she appeared to be having a hard time of letting go of the walker and stepping down into the water of the baptismal font. I helped the lady down into the water and I remember helping her in the baptism. Upon the completion of the baptism I just sank into the water and appeared again on a hill top. It was in the evening and I could see a small village to my right. In the background I could see trees and mountains and the night sky. There were stars in the sky and at the edge of the night horizon I could see what appeared to be a fair with rides and such. There was a Ferris wheel, a roller coaster, etc. and they were all lit up with neon lighting. It was in the distance, but you could clearly see with the outline of neon lights. There was a cobblestone bridge that connected the grassy hill that I was on to the little village. It was a dark night so all I could really see was shadow of the old village houses and such. I did have the sense of being in the presence of a whole host of other people, even though like I said I couldn’t really see anything in any kind of detail. I did have the feeling that to the right of me on the bridge, around my arm was someone that I cared very deeply about. As I looked up into the night sky, still not gathering my senses yet. Overwhelmed by the experience that had just taken place, I said,” Praise God”, in a shout! When I did, there was what appeared to be a large firework that shot up into the night sky and exploded. The sight was as beautiful as any I had ever seen. I was consumed with emotions of all types. Tears were streaming down my face and I felt a smile on my face as I exclaimed again, “Praise God!” This happed over and over and over again until I was nearly out of tears. Finally in a light voice I said,” praise God.” I small like bottle rocket shot slowly up into the sky and popped and fizzled in the sky as if I were the conductor of an orchestra and the fireworks were follow my every direction to the T! As I looked over my left shoulder I saw a huge rock like mountain. There appeared to be two opening into the side of the rock like mountain. The openings had the appearance of old mine shafts from the movies. There was a set of tracks coming out of the opening on the right side and did a semi circle into the other opening on the left. There was a cart like train with several people on it, slowly going around the track and I had the feeling that the opening that it was entering into was the tunnel of love or something like it. How I came to that conclusion I will never know because there was nothing about the side of the rock mountain that would hint to that conclusion. I remember wanting to take the person that was snuggled beneath my right arm on the ride that entered the tunnel of love, so leading her over toward the ride I called out, “ can we ride?” There was no answer and from no where I get this sense that it is unnecessary to ask permission and to just get on. We did and as we were entering the side of the rock mountain, the entrance dark and looking very similar to a mine shaft or even like the thresholds described earlier in the vision, when we broke the plain of the entrance into the tunnel, it was completely dark and I was no longer in the company of the person I had been riding next to on the cart. All of a sudden I heard a shrieking loud squeal behind me! It was a swine or a pig or a hog from H_ll or whatever someone wants to call it. I know that it was a demon that was after me and that its intent was to take my life. Through the darkness I saw a light. It was a round like, like the other opening of a tunnel. I ran as fast as I could. It seemed as if I were standing still and he was sure to get me. I ran and ran and ran as fast as I could and all the while he sounded as if he were on my very heals, at any moment he was about to surely going to catch me and take my life. I made it to the opening and it appeared as if the rock mountain was shaped like a donut. It opened into an opening that had a pool of water in the middle and the sides of the rock wall were all around it. There was a ledge around the edge of the pool of water and I took off along the side of the ledge. Fast as I could but slowly because the ledge was only like 12” inches wide. All of a sudden the swine came out of the tunnel into the opening and toward me on the ledge. Before he reached me, he turned and entered into the rock wall again. Apparently there was an opening there that I hadn’t noticed as I passed. I looked along the other side of the pool of water and there was another opening into the side of the rock wall so I crept along the ledge to the other side and into the dark opening. Surely there was a way out of this? When I entered in again it was dark and the squealing began again. I vision seemed much like before and all I could do is to run for the light at the end of the tunnel. I just knew that the demon pig/swine was going to catch me. To my surprise again I made it to the opening and as I looked around I had made it out of the rock mountain into some type of opening before me I saw a tall board fence that paralleled the rock mountain wall to the left, with a space of around 3 feet between the two. I seemed almost like a cattle shoot of some type. Something that clearly was used to confine and direct something. The swine was still behind me and I had to get out of this mess before I surely lost my life to it. I grabbed a hold of the board of the board fence in front of me and went to pull myself up. There was a problem. I had no strength. Panic set in because I had ran out of choices. I looked up to the top of the fence, which seemed to be at least 3 feet higher then eye level from where I was at. Sitting on top of the board fence was a boy. Maybe 15 or 16 years of age dressed like a shepherd boy I had seen dressed in countless Christmas plays. There I was trying to pull myself up to no avail and looking up to Him for help. He looked down at me with compassion and reached His hand behind my bottom and said,” I forgot that you are heavier hear!” and with no effort at all gave me a boost to the top of the fence. The swine came out and ran along the shoot and disappeared from sight. I was safe at last. As I climbed down from the top of the fence I noticed that I found myself in a plush green pasture, with beautiful, large trees along the perimeter and tall, green, green grass in the opening in the middle. I saw the shepherd boy walking away through the tall grass. Completely exhausted I walked over to the opening in the middle of the pasture, amongst the tall green grass, with the sun shining down on the scene and laid down in the grass. It was finished and I was glad of it! When I came to from the vision, I had the experience of being underwater for a long period time and I was running out of air. I had made it to the surface just in time before I couldn’t hold it anymore and would gasp in nothing but water. My heart was racing as if I had just run a marathon and I was covered in sweat. Approximately 1.5 hours had passed and I was the only one of probably 60 people that was awake. The vision has changed my life forever!!!
My name is Lawrence Scott Andrews.
My name is not David, never has been.
Slowly the significance of all the symbolisms are starting to take shape and my path is becoming clearer each day. Though it is very scary as to the implications I feel as if I have no choice. Who am I to question my destiny?

Screenworks, I tried to find more on Lawrence Scott Andrews. What do you know about him...Do you know if this is the same guy?

His ex wife is named Jessica and they were divorced in 1998. If it is, he's got serious problems.

Hi Chuck.

Sorry, you're wrong. I know the Davidic Servant personally and perfectly. He is not my brother, Jesus Christ.

I'm curious how do you know this? Did this person tell you he was such? I'm not saying that you are wrong. I'm just interested to see how you know..

It's not Christ, the Davidic servant prepares the way for Christ. I know of a few people who think they are this person. I don't know who it is.

Yes prophets can and do and will come from outside the church.
There is to be great judgements and a cleansing of the saints before
we will be (allowed) to "assist" the remnants of Jacob, and House of Israel
who's land this has been given to; to build the New Jerusalem
and be numbered with them.
A Man like Moses, the Marred servant, One mighty and Strong,
the Branch, and I'm sure others.
A GREAT prophet is coming very soon.
I believe he will come not from within our church
and will have more power and authority than our church leaders.
He will have Christ's words. He will bring forth a record,
(the sealed portion of the (B of M) yet many (church and church members)
will not believe him or receive his words., and they will be cut off from the Lord.

3 Nephi 21: 8 And when that day shall come, it shall come to pass that kings shall shut their mouths; for that which had not been told them shall they see; and that which they had not heard shall they consider.

9 For in that day, for my sake shall the Father work a work, which shall be a great and a marvelous work among them; and there shall be among them those who will not believe it, although a man shall declare it unto them.

This is not Joseph Smith, because this "servant", "shall be in my hand; therefore they shall not hurt him", Joseph Smith was killed.

This marred servant, marred because most members
will not believe his words is John.
The "marred servant" is John the Revelator

He will be a descendent of Jesse, or of the
royal Davidic lineage.
he will be a righteous ruler because he will
judge the people, hence he is a Davidic king.

It is this mission, ( he saw himself in Revelations)
what his own mission would be; to gather Israel
in the last days, and be an Elias - a forerunner
to the coming of Christ. Just as John the Baptist
was an Elias - a forerunner to Christ.
For this important mission he (John the Rev.)
has tarried in the flesh for 19 centuries.

He is the "Root of Jessie" in Isaiah 11,
also the Davidic King and may also be the
Man like Moses, and whom rightly belongs,
who holds the keys of the
priesthood and the kingdom.
D&C113:4-6 6 "Behold, thus saith the Lord,
it is a descendant of Jesse, as well as of Joseph,
unto whom rightly belongs the priesthood,
and the keys of the kingdom, for an ensign,
and for the gathering of my people in the last days"
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
D&C113
1 Who is the Stem of Jesse spoken of in the
1st, 2d, 3d, 4th, and 5th verses of the
11th chapter of Isaiah?

2 Verily thus saith the Lord: It is Christ.

3 What is the rod spoken of in the first verse of the
11th chapter of Isaiah, that should come of the Stem of Jesse?

4 Behold, thus saith the Lord: It is a servant in the hands of Christ,
who is partly a descendant of Jesse as well as of Ephraim,
or of the house of Joseph, on whom there is laid much power.

5 What is the root of Jesse spoken of in the 10th verse of the 11th chapter?

6 Behold, thus saith the Lord, it is a descendant of Jesse,
as well as of Joseph, unto whom rightly belongs the priesthood,
and the keys of the kingdom, for an ensign,
and for the gathering of my people in the last days.

3 Nephi 21:10
10 "But behold, the life of my servant
shall be in my hand; therefore they shall not hurt him,
although he shall be marred because of them.
Yet I will heal him, for I will show unto them
that my wisdom is greater than the cunning of the devil."

Isaiah 52:15 "sprinkle many nations"
Joseph Smith translated this to be -
"Gather many nation" see JS trans.
Isaiah 52:
14 "As many were astonished at thee;
his visage was so marred more than any man,
and his form more than the sons of men:
15 So shall he SPRINKLE (JST gather) many nations;
the kings shall shut their mouths at him:
for that which had not been told them shall they see;
and that which they had not heard shall they consider."
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Ether 4:
13 Come unto me, O ye Gentiles, and I will show unto you the greater things, the knowledge which is hid up because of unbelief.

14 Come unto me, O ye house of Israel, and it shall be made manifest unto you how great things the Father hath laid up for you, from the foundation of the world; and it hath not come unto you, because of unbelief.

15 Behold, when ye shall rend that veil of unbelief which doth cause you to remain in your awful state of wickedness, and hardness of heart, and blindness of mind, then shall the great and marvelous things which have been hid up from the foundation of the world from you—yea, when ye shall call upon the Father in my name, with a broken heart and a contrite spirit, then shall ye know that the Father hath remembered the covenant which he made unto your fathers, O house of Israel.

16 And then shall my revelations which I have caused to be written by my servant John be unfolded in the eyes of all the people. Remember, when ye see these things, ye shall know that the time is at hand that they shall be made manifest in very deed.

The Gentiles, will harm and mar this Servant. On account of this, even as the Davidic Servant will be "marred", he will be completely healed by the LORD. This healing might involve him being "translated" and also his receiving of his "Calling and Election made sure". This healing will be truly miraculous for all to see.

The Davidic King will prepare the way for Christ's return. The Davidic King will have a three-year ministry that reaches to the world and warns the entire world of what is to come. Similarly, the 144,000 and also the ANGELS will gather the righteous from throughout the world. But the tribulations of that day will probably have begun before the Davidic King's official ministry to the World has started. We Gentiles, and also the entire World, will have two choices when the Davidic King arrives: we will either (1) harden our hearts to our own condemnation and destruction; or else (2) we will repent and prepare to join Zion. There will be a complete division between the righteous and the wicked in that day.

The Great and Marvelous Work will probably not begin until the Davidic King's three-year official ministry starts. We have not seen the "Great and Marvelous Work", yet; [I assume it means there will be another marvelous work greater than the one during Joseph Smiths time?]. This event is still future and it will be incredible. Among other things, the Davidic King will completely restore House of Israel.

The Gathering of Israel’s Outcasts from Exile

A hard fact of Isaiah’s end-time scenario is that it is not those who appear to be God’s people whom God saves in the end but those who are rejected by the majority. These “outcasts” suffer “reproach” and “ridicule,” are “excluded” from God’s people, and, like God’s servant who gathers them, are “despised” and “abhorred” until God reverses their circumstances (Isaiah 49:7–8; 51:7; 60:15–16; 61:7, 9; 66:5–8). In the end, those who are excluded and betrayed by their own people, are gathered with God’s righteous remnant: “Thus says my Lord Jehovah, who gathers up the outcasts of Israel: ‘I will gather others to those already gathered’” (Isaiah 56:3, 8).

This is where I place my bets. If it wasn't for this person, Israel would not be a state. He was in the right place at the right time, and was its head of state multiple times. I believe this has already been long fulfilled.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Ben-Gurion

http://freebeacon.com/culture/israels-g ... ashington/

"Whatever his failings, Ben-Gurion is generally viewed by Israelis as their country’s George Washington. As such, they overlook his flaws. Shapira also overlooks them. In this, she is a typical Israeli."

Yes, I know people don't like the idea because he was an admirer of Lenin, etc., and didn't like his politics. But many times, people have major failings, but still have a job to perform. Who can deny the role of Martin Luther King, despite his myriad of failings, and the fact that he was a Communist. He still had a mission to perform on the world scene, and performed it.

"who knoweth whether thou art come to the kingdom for such a time as this?" (Esther 4:14)

So, I think we need to look no further for this servant, especially among LDS claimants.

While some of these prophecies are typological, and also apply to Christ, I think they had their literal fulfillment in Ben Gurion. I think it is more than a coincidence that he was the head of state during the formal founding of the country. He is to Israel what George Washington is to us.

Here is Ezra Taft Benson's account of his interaction with David Ben-Gurion

Ensign, December 1976

A Message to Judah from Joseph
Ezra Taft Benson
By President Ezra Taft Benson
Of the Council of the Twelve

An address to Mormons, Non-Mormons, and Jews at the Jubilee Auditorium, Calgary, Alberta, Canada, May 2, 1976

A Message to Judah from Joseph

President Ezra Taft Benson
My brethren and sisters—I use that as an inclusive greeting to all assembled, for it is a part of my faith that we are all children of one Father. To our Jewish friends I say, “Shalom Haverim,” which is to say, “Good evening, brothers.” It is a privilege and honor to be with you tonight.

Cherished Associations with Jewish People

Among some of my most cherished experiences and recollections are the fond association I have enjoyed in past years with the Jewish people in the United States and the land of Israel. I have visited Israel three times. I have met hundreds of government officials, farmers, business and trade people, and leaders in professions. No visits have been more impressive than the visits with David Ben-Gurion, Levi Eshkol, and Moshe Dayan.

During a luncheon given in my honor, chaired by Mr. Eshkol in the King David Hotel in Jerusalem, Mr. Ben-Gurion sent a handwritten note to me from the hospital, asking would I call on him if my time permitted. This I did. He was sitting in a rocker with one leg elevated as I walked into his hospital room. You may recall that some crank threw a bomb into Parliament and his ankle was injured. As we greeted each other, he said, “Would you mind if the press came in while we visit? They’ve been trying to see me, but I haven’t seen anyone except my wife and the nurse.” I told him I would have no objection. The press came in, and then he began talking to me and asking questions. He wanted to know what the attitude of the Mormons was toward the Jews. We had a most interesting conversation.

On my second visit to Palestine, I toured the entire country by small plane, helicopter, and automobile, and was shown every possible courtesy and consideration. I had a further meeting with Ben-Gurion and Levi Eshkol, and then met with General Moshe Dayan, the man who had led their forces against the Egyptians.

Dayan, former minister of agriculture, gave a buffet dinner in my honor, served on the patio and lawn at his home. As we walked around the lawn, he told of the campaign they had against the Egyptians. He said in substance, “I’m not what people would call a spiritual man, but no one will ever convince me that there wasn’t a higher power with us as we met the Egyptians down on the Sinai.” I could not help but be reminded of Zechariah’s great prophecy:

“Jerusalem shall be inhabited again in her own place. …

“In that day shall the Lord defend the inhabitants of Jerusalem; and he that is feeble among them at that day shall be as David; and the house of David shall be as God.” (Zech. 12:6, 8.)

My next visit was while serving my church as a General Authority over Europe in 1964. We had two congregations at Beirut, Lebanon. I was visiting those branches and wrote in advance to Mr. Eshkol, who had become prime minister when Ben-Gurion had retired. I indicated that I would like to come to Jerusalem again, and if his time permitted I would be happy to call and pay my respects. He wrote back immediately urging me to come and sent me a handwritten note from Ben-Gurion, asking that I set aside one night that my wife and I might spend an evening with them.

We had two visits with these men at that time. We spent an evening with Ben-Gurion and his wife in their apartment in Tel Aviv. Most of the time was spent in the library, where there were books from the floor to the ceiling on three walls. During the evening he said, “I want you to pray to God that he’ll spare me for a few more years. I’m writing a history of the Jewish people, and it will take time to finish it.” As we were leaving at the door that evening, he said, “You know, there are no people in this world who understand the Jews like the Mormons.”

We Have Cosuffered with the Jews

Yes, there is a great affinity for the Jews by the Mormons. The Jews have endured great persecution and suffering. This we understand, for our people have also undergone severe persecution and extermination. Indeed, the man we revere as a modern prophet, Joseph Smith, was martyred for his testimony in 1844. In 1846 our people had to exodus from the United States because of the threat of annihilation. We settled in a desert region similar to the topography around the Dead Sea and the Sea of Galilee. There we have developed our “land of promise.”

Yes, we can empathize with the suffering of the Jews, for we have cosuffered with them. But our affinity toward modern Judah is not prompted merely out of mutual suffering; it is prompted out of a knowledge of our peculiar relationships together—relationships which claim a common heritage. Jeremiah has prophesied that in the latter times “the house of Judah shall walk with the house of Israel, and they shall come together.” (Jer. 3:18.) My prayer is that because of evenings spent together like this one, this prophecy will come to be fulfilled. We need to know more about the Jews, and the Jews ought to know more about the Mormons. When we understand one another, then perhaps you will understand why Ben-Gurion said, “There are no people in the world who understand the Jews like the Mormons.”

Kindred Doctrines of the Mormons and the Jews

Among the kindred doctrines of the Mormons and the Jews is our mutual belief in Jehovah, a God of revelation. We share a common belief in the Messiah who will come. We further hold reciprocal beliefs in prophets. We hold a common commitment to the return of the Jews to the “land of Jerusalem,” in fulfillment of the words of the ancient prophets. There are many other doctrinal and social similarities.

Foundation of the Church Known as “the Mormons”

The foundation of the Church, which is sometimes referred to by nonmembers as the “Mormon” Church, is a belief in revelation—modern revelation by God of his purposes and directions to living prophets.

We believe as Amos declared: “Surely the Lord God will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets.” (Amos 3:7.)

We declare that secrets long since hidden through the ages have been revealed again through a prophet by the revelation of “a new and everlasting covenant” to Israel. That prophet’s name was Joseph Smith. These are the words of his own testimony:

“On the evening [of] the 21st of September, A.D. 1823, while I was praying unto God, and endeavoring to exercise faith in the precious promises of Scripture, on a sudden a light like that of day, only of a far purer and more glorious appearance and brightness, burst into the room, indeed the first sight was as though the house was filled with consuming fire; the appearance produced a shock that affected the whole body; in a moment a personage stood before me surrounded with a glory yet greater than that with which I was already surrounded. This messenger proclaimed himself to be an angel of God, sent to bring the joyful tidings that the covenant which God made with ancient Israel was at hand to be fulfilled. … I was informed that I was chosen to be an instrument in the hands of God to bring about some of His purposes in this glorious dispensation.” (History of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 4:536–37.)

The Mormons’ Interest in the Jews

From the very inception of this latter-day work, which claims to be a restoration of the covenants given by God to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, this church has had a deep interest in the remnant of the house of Israel, the descendants of Judah.

In 1836, the Mormons completed their first temple at Kirtland, Ohio. In the dedicatory prayer which was offered on that occasion, Joseph Smith petitioned the “Lord God of Israel”:

“O Lord … thou knowest that thou hast a great love for the children of Jacob, who have been scattered upon the mountains for a long time. …

“We therefore ask thee to have mercy upon the children of Jacob, that Jerusalem, from this hour, may begin to be redeemed;

“And the yoke of bondage may begin to be broken off from the house of David;

“And the children of Judah may begin to return to the lands which thou didst give to Abraham, their father.” (D&C 109:60–64.)

This was said during the Passover season, March 27, 1836.

The Orson Hyde Expedition to Israel

Before Joseph Smith was killed, he dispatched a Jewish apostle by the name of Orson Hyde to dedicate the land of Palestine for the return of the Jews. This concern for a homeless people and the sending of this apostle was done at a time when the Mormons themselves were virtually homeless, having been dispossessed of their lands and possessions in Missouri.

Orson Hyde left on his assignment in the fall of 1840. He arrived in Palestine in October 1841. On October 24, 1841, he ascended the Mount of Olives all alone, built an altar to the Lord, and offered a dedicatory prayer. Here are some portions of that prayer:

“Thy servant … has safely arrived in this place to dedicate and consecrate this land unto Thee, for the gathering together of Judah’s scattered remnants, according to the predictions of the holy Prophets—for the building up of Jerusalem again after it has been trodden down by the Gentiles so long, and for rearing a Temple in honor of Thy name. …

“O Thou, Who didst covenant with Abraham, Thy friend, and Who didst renew that covenant with Isaac, and confirm the same with Jacob with an oath, that Thou wouldst not only give them this land for an everlasting inheritance, but that Thou wouldst also remember their seed forever. Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob have long since closed their eyes in death, and made the grave their mansion. Their children are scattered and dispersed abroad among the nations of the Gentiles like sheep that have no shepherd, and are still looking forward for the fulfillment of those promises which Thou didst make concerning them. …

“Let the land become abundantly fruitful when possessed by its rightful heirs; let it again flow with plenty to feed the returning prodigals. … Incline them to gather in upon this land according to Thy word. Let them come like clouds and like doves to their windows. [This was uttered before the airplane was invented.] Let the large ships of the nations bring them from the distant isles; and let kings become their nursing fathers, and queens with motherly fondness wipe the tear of sorrow from their eye. …

“Let them know that it is Thy good pleasure to restore the kingdom unto Israel—raise up Jerusalem as its capital, and constitute her people a distinct nation and government, with David Thy servant, even a descendant from the loins of ancient David to be their king.” (HC, 4:456–57; italics added.)

This was said at a time when Jewish immigration was but a trickle. Today the gathering has been realized in part with over three million Jews back in the land of their fathers.

On at least two separate occasions, leaders of the nation of Israel have requested that I relate to them the story of Orson Hyde. The first occasion was at the luncheon to which I alluded previously. Mr. Eshkol asked me to tell the luncheon audience about Orson Hyde and his visit to Palestine. I replied, “Do you mean that?” He said that he did. So I related that account to them.

Another occasion was my last visit with David Ben-Gurion. He requested, “I would like you to send me all the information you have about Orson Hyde and his visit to Palestine in 1841. I would like to include it in my history.” We subsequently sent that information to him.

The Mormon Interest in the Jews Is Based on Kinship

Historically, we must recognize that this interest in the restoration of the Jews to their homeland is older than modern Zionism and the great work of Theodor Herzl and others. There were a number of Christian sects in the nineteenth century which held millennial views and saw the return of the Jews to their homeland as a “sign of the times” which would precede the second advent of Jesus Christ. The Mormon interest was and is more than this. Our concern and interest is a kinship to our Jewish brothers.

Our common heritage goes back to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. God reiterated to Jacob the same promises which were given to Abraham, and then gave Jacob the new name of Israel. His posterity—all those who descended through his twelve sons—were known by this designation. They were variously referred to as the “house of Israel,” “children of Israel,” or “tribes of Israel.” I emphasize that all of his posterity received the family name designation through the twelve sons. Today it has become common practice to identify only one of his twelve sons, Judah, with the family designation “Israelite” because they have maintained their separate identity.

Israel’s Blessing to Joseph

As you carefully read the forty-ninth chapter of Genesis, you will find that Jacob, or Israel, pronounced blessings on all his twelve sons. Each was given a peculiar and distinctive blessing. Time will only permit a consideration of the blessings to two of these sons, whose blessings were preeminent above the blessings of the others. I refer to the blessings pronounced on Judah and Joseph. May I read first the blessing pronounced on Joseph:

“Joseph is a fruitful bough, even a fruitful bough by a well; whose branches run over the wall:

“The archers have sorely grieved him, and shot at him, and hated him:

“But his bow abode in strength, and the arms of his hands were made strong by the hands of the mighty God of Jacob; (from thence is the shepherd, the stone of Israel:)

“Even by the God of thy father, who shall help thee; and by the Almighty, who shall bless thee with blessings of heaven above, blessings of the deep that lieth under, blessings of the breasts, and of the womb:

“The blessings of thy father have prevailed above the blessings of my progenitors unto the utmost bound of the everlasting hills: they shall be on the head of Joseph, and on the crown of the head of him that was separate from his brethren.” (Gen. 49:22–26.)

There are several points which we should note carefully about this blessing:

1. Joseph’s posterity would be numerous; that is, he would be a “fruitful bough.”

2. His posterity or “branches” would “run over the wall.”

3. His descendants would be sorely persecuted, which is the meaning of the phraseology “the archers have sorely grieved him, and shot at him, and hated him.”

4. The blessings on Joseph’s posterity were to prevail “above the blessings of my progenitors unto the utmost bound of the everlasting hills.”

Later I shall comment on the interpretation of this blessing as it affects the relationships of the present-day Mormons and Jews; but first it will be instructive to review the history of the descendants of Israel after they came into the land promised to Abraham as “the land of Canaan … an everlasting possession.” (Gen. 17:8.)

The Scattering of Israel

For a time the confederated tribes were a united monarchy under Saul, David, and Solomon, but ultimately they divided into two major kingdoms. The kingdom to the north—which comprised 10 1/2 tribes, including the descendants of Joseph—retained the designation Israel. The kingdom to the south—made up primarily of the tribe of Judah—adopted the name of Judah. (See 1 Kgs. 11:31–32; 1 Kgs. 12:19–24.)

Prophets were raised up among these two nations to call them to repentance because of their idolatry and wickedness. The prophet Amos predicted the results of this disobedience to God.

“Now shall they [Israel] go captive with the first that go captive.” (Amos 6:7.)

“I will sift the house of Israel among all nations, like as corn is sifted in a sieve, yet shall not the least grain fall upon the earth.” (Amos 9:9.)

The northern kingdom, Israel, was subsequently taken into captivity by the Assyrians 721 years B.C.E., or Before Common Era. The Old Testament contains no history of Israel, nor of Joseph’s descendants after this date. Are we to believe that God’s promises to Joseph were for naught, that the prophecy of his posterity being numerous, “running over the wall,” being sorely persecuted, and going to the “utmost bound of the everlasting hills” would not be fulfilled?

Separate Records to Be Kept

Because of the division which occurred between the two kingdoms, the Lord made special provision that separate records were kept. The prophet Ezekiel spoke of these records in these words:

“The word of the Lord came again unto me, saying,

“Moreover, thou son of man, take thee one stick, and write upon it, For Judah, and for the children of Israel his companions: then take another stick and write upon it, For Joseph, the stick of Ephraim, and for all the house of Israel his companions:

“And join them one to another into one stick; and they shall become one in thine hand.

“And when the children of thy people shall speak unto thee, saying, Wilt thou not shew us what thou meanest by these?

“Say unto them, Thus saith the Lord God; Behold, I will take the stick of Joseph, which is in the hand of Ephraim, and the tribes of Israel his fellows, and will put them with him, even with the stick of Judah, and make them one stick, and they shall be one in mine hand.

“And the sticks whereon thou writest shall be in thine hand before their eyes.” (Ezek. 37:15–20.)

From this commandment from God to the prophet Ezekiel, these provisions should be noted:

1. That a stick or record was to be kept for Judah, and that a stick or record was to be kept for Joseph;

2. That the two records were to be joined together into “one stick,” or record, in the hands of that prophet.

Where is the fulfillment of this important commandment? Who claims to have the record of Joseph today?

The Book of Mormon Fulfills Joseph’s Prophecy

The record of Joseph has been brought forth in this day to Joseph Smith by a messenger sent from God. That record is called the Book of Mormon, named after one of the seed of Joseph who abridged the records of his people. The record tells the account of a colony of Israelites, descended from Joseph, who left Jerusalem before its great destruction during the Babylonian siege under King Nebuchadnezzar. It tells how these descendants of Joseph came “over the wall”—a metaphoric expression which denoted a barrier to them. That barrier was the great ocean between the continents of Asia and the Americas. This record tells how they were guided by the hand of the Lord to the land of America, a land of promise to Joseph and his descendants, a land “of everlasting hills.” It tells how Joseph’s posterity became very numerous upon the land until they filled it with a mighty nation. All this was in fulfillment of Joseph’s blessing! The Book of Mormon further records the destruction of this mighty civilization because of their departure from the commandments of the God of Israel.

The records of these people lay buried in the earth for centuries. Then in 1827, a heavenly messenger turned them over to Joseph Smith. They were subsequently translated from their ancient reformed Egyptian writing into the English language and were published to the world in the year 1830.

The Judean prophet Ezekiel had declared that these records were to be “one in thine hand.” I witness before you the fulfillment of that prophecy—the record of Judah in one hand, the record of Joseph in the other—one in our hands today.

Judah’s Scattering and Persecution

But what about the prophecies that pertain to the house of Judah? The northern tribes of Israel were not the only ones to be dispersed according to prophecy. Judah, the southern kingdom, was also to be scattered:

“And the Lord said, I will remove Judah also out of my sight, as I have removed Israel, and will cast off this city Jerusalem which I have chosen, and the house of which I said, My name shall be there.” (2 Kgs. 23:27; italics added.)

The history of the scattering of the nation Judah is so well known as to be regarded proverbial. Under the seizure of Babylon, the nation was taken into exile. A remnant returned to rebuild Jerusalem and the temple after the Persians came into power. Since that time, except for a short period of independence under the Maccabbees, Judah has been under the yoke of foreign domination: the Macedonian Empire; the tripartite government rule by Egypt, Syria, and Macedonia; Syrian domination; then the Roman rule, and a final dispersion among all nations.

Time will not permit extensive comment about the depth of the suffering and their persecution among many nations. Some of the most evil of those deeds were perpetrated upon the remaining Jews in Palestine in the name of Christianity during the Crusades. Will Durrant has correctly written of this sad chapter of human suffering, “No other people has ever known so long an exile, or so hard a fate.”

I remember standing on the ruins of what was the largest Jewish ghetto in Europe in the Jewish section of Warsaw, Poland, in August 1946. There we were given a description of what had transpired as being somewhat typical of that which had gone on in various parts of Europe through the establishment of the medieval ghetto.

Here 250,000 descendants of Judah had lived prior to the war. Under the Nazi rule, through forced labor, Jews were required to build a wall around the ghetto. Later some 150,000 Jews from other parts of Europe were brought into that area. The Germans first tried to starve them out, but when that did not work, they transported over 310,000 Jews to the extermination camps. When Himmler found that there were still some 60,000 Jews alive in the ghetto, he ordered their “resettlement.” When they forcibly resisted, the German S. S. General Stroop ordered the tanks, artillery, flamethrowers, and dynamite squads on the ghetto. The extermination which was to have taken three days lasted four weeks. The final report by the general read, “Total number of Jews dealt with: 56,065, including both Jews caught and Jews whose extermination can be proved.” This report left 36,000 Jews unaccounted for which were no doubt claimed by the gas chambers. (William L. Shirer, The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich, Greenwich, Conn.: Fawcett Publishers, 1965, p. 1272.)

As we stood on the crumbled brick and mortar and the rubble some fifteen feet deep, with only the spire of one burned synagogue showing—no other building in that vast area—we were told that thousands of bodies still remained under the rubble of those once great buildings in this section of Warsaw.

I have visited some of the concentration camps, the mass graves, and the crematoriums where, it is estimated, six million of the sons and daughters of Judah lost their lives, reducing their world population from seventeen to eleven million.

I have been impressed to tears as I visited some of these wanderers, those persecuted and driven sons of our Heavenly Father, my brethren of Judah. Yes, the prophecies regarding the dispersion and suffering of Judah have been fulfilled. But the gathering and reestablishment of the Jews was also clearly predicted.

Prophecies Concerning the Gathering of Israel and the Jews

This predicted gathering has three phases: the gathering of Israel to the land of Zion, the American hemisphere; the return of the Ten Tribes from the north countries; and the reestablishment of the Jews in Palestine which had been long ago predicted by the prophets in these words:

“It shall come to pass in that day, that the Lord shall set his hand again the second time to recover the remnant of his people. …

“And he shall set up an ensign for the nations, and shall assemble the outcasts of Israel, and gather together the dispersed of Judah from the four corners of the earth.” (Isa. 11:11–12; italics added.)

“For, lo, the days come, saith the Lord, that I will bring again the captivity of my people Israel and Judah, … and I will cause them [plural] to return to the land that I gave to their fathers, and they shall possess it.” (Jer. 30:3; italics added.)

“Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah.” (Jer. 31:31.)

And hear the words of Zechariah:

“I will strengthen the house of Judah, and I will save the house of Joseph, and I will bring them again to place them. …

“I will hiss for them, and gather them; for I have redeemed them.” (Zech. 10:6, 8.)

I have witnessed this spirit work upon the Jews. In 1946, I was impressed as we interviewed many to find how determined they were to return to Palestine. As they would come to the relief agencies and the displaced-person camps to get temporary help, we would ask them why they did not settle nearby, and often would invite them to stay. But most had but one desire—to return to the land of their fathers.

The Book of Mormon is no less explicit in its prophecy concerning Israel’s and Judah’s gathering from a long dispersion:

“And it shall come to pass that they shall be gathered in from their long dispersion, from the isles of the sea, and from the four parts of the earth; and the nations of the Gentiles shall be great in the eyes of me, saith God, in carrying them forth to the lands of their inheritance.

“Yea, the kings of the Gentiles shall be nursing fathers unto them, and their queens shall become nursing mothers.” (2 Ne. 10:8–9.)

I saw the fulfillment of this prophecy with my own eyes in war-torn Europe in 1946 when ships of Great Britain smuggled the Jews to Palestine in response to the powerful spirit of gathering. The Mormon people understand this spirit.

Here is a further prophecy from the Book of Mormon regarding the scattering and the restoration of Judah:

“Wherefore, the Jews shall be scattered among all nations; yea, and also Babylon shall be destroyed; wherefore, the Jews shall be scattered by other nations.

“And after they have been scattered, and the Lord God hath scourged them by other nations for the space of many generations …

“And the Lord will set his hand again the second time to restore his people from their lost and fallen state. Wherefore, he will proceed to do a marvelous work and a wonder among the children of men.” (2 Ne. 25:15–17.)

Since 1948, the people of the world have witnessed a marvelous drama taking place before their eyes; and yet it is a miracle that has gone rather unnoticed and unappreciated. One of the greatest events in history is the literal gathering of the Jews to their homeland from “the four corners of the earth.” It is, as Isaiah prophesied, “a marvelous work and a wonder.” (See Isa. 29:14.)

In 1950, I said, “There has been much confusion over the Palestine question—much talk of division of the land, of quotas, import restrictions—but out of it all I cannot help feeling that we will see a complete fulfilment of the prophecies which have been made regarding this people. These prophecies are in rapid course of fulfilment before our very eyes today.” (Conference Reports, April 1950, p. 77.)

Since that time, the nation of Israel has fought three wars, regained Jerusalem and the western wall (Wailing Wall), and added the Golan Heights and much of the Sinai Peninsula to its territory.

The Blessing of Israel Pronounced on Judah

We previously considered the blessing that Jacob, or Israel, pronounced on Joseph. Let us now consider the blessing pronounced on Judah:

“Judah, thou art he whom thy brethren shall praise: thy hand shall be in the neck of thine enemies; thy father’s children shall bow down before thee.

“Judah is a lion’s whelp: from the prey, my son, thou art gone up: he stooped down, he couched as a lion, and as an old lion; who shall rouse him up?

“The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh come; and unto him shall the gathering of the people be.

“Binding his foal unto the vine, and his @#$’s colt unto the choice vine; he washed his garments in wine, and his clothes in the blood of grapes:

“His eyes shall be red with wine, and his teeth white with milk.” (Gen. 49:8–12.)

The great blessing to Judah is that it contemplated the coming of Shiloh who would gather his people to him. This prophecy concerning Shiloh has been subject to several rabbinic and Christian interpretations and the object of considerable controversy. The interpretation given this passage by the Mormon Church is one based on revelation to modern prophets, not on scholarly commentary. It was revealed to Joseph Smith that Shiloh is the Messiah. (See JST, Gen. 50:24.)

President Wilford Woodruff, the apostle who became the fourth President of the Church I represent, said this to the Jews in the year 1879:

“And this is the will of your great Elohim, O house of Judah, and whenever you shall be called upon to perform this work, the God of Israel will help you. You have a great future and destiny before you and you cannot avoid fulfilling it; you are the royal chosen seed, and the God of your father’s house has kept you distinct as a nation for eighteen hundred years, under all the oppression of the whole Gentile world. You may not wait until you believe on Jesus of Nazareth, but when you meet with Shiloh your king, you will know him; your destiny is marked out, you cannot avoid it. It is true that after you return and gather your nation home, and rebuild your City and Temple, that the Gentiles may gather together their armies to go against you to battle … ; but when this affliction comes, the living God, that led Moses through the wilderness, will deliver you, and your Shiloh will come and stand in your midst and will fight your battles; and you will know him, and the afflictions of the Jews will be at an end, while the destruction of the Gentiles will be so great that it will take the whole house of Israel who are gathered about Jerusalem, seven months to bury the dead of their enemies, and the weapons of war will last them seven years for fuel, so that they need not go to any forest for wood. These are tremendous sayings—who can bear them? Nevertheless they are true, and will be fulfilled, according to the sayings of Ezekiel, Zechariah, and other prophets. Though the heavens and the earth pass away, not one jot or tittle will fall unfulfilled.” (Matthias F. Cowley, Wilford Woodruff, Bookcraft, 1964, pp. 509–10; italics added.)

The Book of Mormon, which was also written to the Jew, testifies who the Shiloh is, “for there is save one Messiah spoken of by the prophets.” (2 Ne. 25:18.)

“The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh come.” (Gen. 49:10.) We see the fulfillment of the Shiloh prophecy this way: Judah came to power when David was exalted to the throne. Even after the division of the northern and southern kingdoms, the kings of Judah sat on the throne. Following the Babylonian captivity, “lawgivers” were provided to the Jewish remnant who returned to Jerusalem. Zerubbabel, Ezra, and Nehemiah are examples. Subsequently, the Sanhedrin was established, and it continued as the ruling body of the Jews until the destruction of Jerusalem and the scattering of the Jews. From that time, the Jews had no lawgiver to whom they could turn. Shiloh had come. He was Jesus of Nazareth, who was later crucified as “King of the Jews.”

Christian history has emphasized the point that the Jews as a nation rejected their Messiah. Overlooked has been the fact that many Jews did believe him to be the Messiah. Among those Jews who did so were his twelve apostles and thousands of other Jews who were converted by their ministry. We declare that after his ministry in Palestine, the resurrected Messiah personally visited the house of Joseph in this land of America, taught them, blessed them, and renewed the everlasting covenant with them. His ministry to America is recorded in the Book of Mormon.

The Story of Joseph Revisited

You will recall the episode of Joseph and his brethren in the Old Testament, and how he was sold into Egypt. You will remember that, because of a famine in the land of Canaan, his brethren were compelled to go to Egypt to purchase corn from the granaries. Joseph had risen to the position of governor over the land, and was in charge of those granaries. One of the most touching scenes recorded in the Torah is when Joseph made himself known to his brethren: “I am Joseph your brother …” (Gen. 45:4.)

To you, our friends of modern Judah, we declare, “We are Joseph, your brothers.” We claim kinship with you as descendants from our fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. We belong to the same family. We, too, are the house of Israel.

There is yet another parallel to this story of Joseph.

The brethren of Joseph in times past came to him during a famine for physical sustenance. Today there is another famine in the land, “not a famine of bread, nor a thirst of water, but of hearing the words of the Lord.” (Amos 8:11.)

Has not the Lord God said through Isaiah, “Every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters. …

satisfy thy soul in drought, and make fat thy bones: and thou shalt be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters fail not.” (Isa. 55:1; Isa. 58:11.)

We are also cognizant of God’s charge to Judah through his prophet Jeremiah:

“For my people have committed two evils; they have forsaken me the fountain of living waters, and hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water.” (Jer. 2:13.)

Of far greater value than the physical sustenance that Joseph of old provided his brethren is the sustenance that modern Joseph has to offer modern Judah today. We offer freely bread to eat and water to drink. I repeat, our interest in Judah is one of kinship, for we are your brothers. We come with a message and say, “We have ‘living water’ from its true source and well, which, if a man will drink it, ‘shall be in him a well of living water, springing up unto everlasting life.’” (D&C 63:23.)

In Jacob’s blessing to Judah, he declared: “Judah is … as an old lion; who shall rouse him up?” (Gen. 49:9; italics added.) We come as messengers bearing the legitimate authority to arouse Judah to her promises. We do not ask Judah to forsake her heritage. We are not asking her to leave father, mother, or family. We bring a message that Judah does not possess. That message constitutes “living water” from the Fountain of living water.

Our prophet, Joseph Smith, was given a commandment by the Lord to turn “the hearts of the Jews unto the prophets, and the prophets unto the Jews.” (D&C 98:17.) We are presently sending our messengers to every land and people whose ideology permits us entrance. We have been gathering Joseph’s descendants for 146 years. We hope you, who are of Judah, will not think it an intrusion for us to present our message to you. You are welcome to come to our meetings. We display no crosses. We collect no offerings. We honor your commitment to your unique heritage and your individuality. We approach you in a different way than any other Christian church because we represent the restored covenant to the entire house of Israel.

Yes, we understand the Jews, as David Ben-Gurion said. We understand them because we belong to the same house of Israel. We are your brothers—Joseph. We look forward to the day of fulfillment of God’s promise when “the house of Judah shall walk with the house of Israel.” (Jer. 3:18.)

A Blessing on Judah

As one who, by special assignment, has been given authority in the house of Israel today, I ask the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob to bless my brethren of Judah and have mercy on them; that the land to which Judah has returned after a long night of dispersion shall be fruitful, prosperous, and become the envy to her neighbors; that the nation Israel shall be delivered from all her oppressors and enemies; that Judah will “draw water out of the wells of salvation” (Isa. 12:3) and fulfill all those prophecies that God declared through his prophets Isaiah, Ezekiel, and Jeremiah, even that prophecy through Zechariah that “the Lord shall inherit Judah his portion in the holy land, and shall choose Jerusalem again” (Zech. 2:12).

I witness to you, my brothers and sisters of all the house of Israel, that I know that the God of heaven presides over the destinies of all his children. I witness that he has set his hand a second time to recover his people from the four corners of the earth to the lands of their inheritance. I testify that he has restored his new covenant with Israel. I know the Book of Mormon is a truthful account of God’s dealings with the house of Joseph, that its testimony is true, and that it is the word of the Lord to the Gentiles, Jews, and all the house of Israel. I further witness that Joseph Smith was what he represented himself to be, a prophet of the living God and a messenger of the new covenant to Israel. I would urge all to give heed to the message given by God through him.

Perhaps now, our friends of Judah, you will appreciate the sincerity of our declaration to you, “Shalom Haverim.” I pray God’s blessings upon us all. In the name of Jesus Christ—the Messiah. Amen.

I agree that David Ben-Gurion is held by many in the highest esteem, but I believe that one of our General Authorities said the Davidic Servant was Jesus. I just can't remember who said it.

There are so many people, prophesies, and beliefs concerning this long looked for Servant. I will tell you what, when a New Dispensation dawns or the Two Witnesses appear in Jerusalem, then and ONLY THEN might the DS name be revealed! And I am not referring to his Mission Title.... DAVID!

The name of the David Servant is David, not Christ.

In History of the Church Volume 6 page page 253, which you quoted, Joseph Smith said this latter-day David would come from David's lineage and inherit David's kingdom which he lost through transgression.

When Moroni appeared to Joseph Smith he quoted Isaiah 11 four times and said it was about to be fulfilled. Isaiah 11 is a very significant scripture that every Latter-day Saint needs to study. As one studies this scripture it mentions the Stem, Rod, and Root of Jesse, which makes no sense at first. However, a cross reference to D & C 113 can be found there.

Section 113

1. "Who is the Stem of Jesse spoken of in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th verses of the eleventh chapter of Isaiah?

2. Verily thus saith the Lord: It is Christ.

3. Who is the Rod spoken of in the first verse of the eleventh chapter of Isaiah, that should come from the Stem of Jesse?

4. Behold, thus saith the Lord, It is a servant in the hands of Christ, who is partly a descendant of Jesse as well as of Ephraim, or of the house of Joseph, on whom there is laid much power.

In verse 4 The Lord himself says the rod of Jesse is "a servant in the hands of Christ," not Christ himself.

In verse 6 The Lord explains who the Root of Jesse is. I believe the Rod and Root of Jesse are the same person. When Joseph Smith mentioned this latter-day David in the History of the Church, I believe he was referencing the individual mentioned by the Lord in Section 113.

The Lord has given me some inspiration concerning this latter-day David, but my inspiration is too good to be true. Because of that I'm going to keep that inspiration to myself until I can confirm it, but I believe that David Bednar is this David. He is most likely a descendant of Joseph on his mother's side of the family. Because Bednar is a Polish, Jewish surname, he is at least a descendant of Judah on his father's side. If he is a descendant of Judah through Jesse, then he could be this Latter-day David.

The bottom line for me is that this latter-day Davidic Servant is not Christ, but is "a servant in the hands of Christ" as The Lord himself said, and obviously his name is David.

Quick question... Does the prophecy say that this prophet's first name must be David? What if David is his last name, middle name, or he had his name changed to David at some point in the past? Would that not also fulfill the requirement of his name being David?

Just trying to encourage you guys to think out side the box.

The word, "Christ", is one of the titles held by Jesus. "Son of David" is also a title which refers to Jesus. Maybe "Latter Day David" is a title and not necessarily the man's first given name. I will just be glad when the Lord returns.

hi
Bednar comes from Bednarz in Polish and stands for a cooper someone in the trade of making utensils, casks, drums and barrels and other accessories, usually out of wood, but sometimes using other materials. It is a common person/peasant family name. Therefore, he does not come from a royal lineage(Judah). If it was so, his surname would end with ski(or sky if his ancestors migrated to USA).
Furthermore, what you are describing it seems like a ROD from D&C113:3-43-
3 What is the rod spoken of in the first verse of the 11th chapter of Isaiah, that should come of the Stem of Jesse? 4 Behold, thus saith the Lord: It is a servant in the hands of Christ, who is partly a descendant of Jesse as well as of Ephraim, or of the house of Joseph, on whom there is laid much power.
. Who is 'Mighty and Strong'.

We also have ROOT D&C113:5-6 -
5 What is the root of Jesse spoken of in the 10th verse of the 11th chapter? 6 Behold, thus saith the Lord, it is a descendant of Jesse, as well as of Joseph, unto whom rightly belongs the priesthood, and the keys of the kingdom, for an ensign, and for the gathering of my people in the last days.
. Who in my opinion is John the Beloved who tarried after our Saviours death.

And only then we come to A servant called David also known as a Branch. The Prophet Joseph Smith taught that "the throne and kingdom of David is to be taken from him and given to another by the name of David in the last days, raised up out of his lineage" (TPJS, p. 339). Elder Orson Hyde, in his dedicatory prayer on the Mount of Olives, October 24, 1841, prophesied that the Jews would return to Jerusalem and that in time a leader called David, "even a descendant from the loins of ancient David, [would] be their king" (HC 4:457).In Isaiah 11:1 we read
And there shall come forth a ROD out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots
. Branch will grow out of RODs roots? interesting, could it mean that David will be a son(or descendant) of ROD/One Mighty and Strong?

a couple more scriptures:
Zachariah 6: 12
"And speak unto him, saying, Thus speaketh the LORD of hosts, saying, Behold the man whose name is The Branch; and he shall grow up out of his place, and he shall build the temple of the LORD"
Jeremiah 23:5
"Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth"
Jeremiah 33:15
'In those days and at that time I will cause a righteous Branch of David to spring forth; and He shall execute justice and righteousness on the earth.
Hosea 3:5
"Afterward shall the children of Israel return, and seek the LORD their God, and David their king; and shall fear the LORD and his goodness in the latter days"
thank you and what are your thoughts?x

"I was once praying very earnestly to know the time of the coming of the Son of Man, when I heard a voice repeat the following: Joseph, my son, if thou livest until thou art eighty-five years old, thou shalt see the face of the Son of Man; therefore let this suffice, and trouble me no more on this matter. (D&C 130:14-15).

Abraham Gileadi in his works claims that "The son of Man" also refers to this Davidic king... and I suggest may also refer to "the one mighty and strong" in the 85th section of d&c...being one and the same....
So my opining is, why would the Savior tell JS that if he lived to the age of 85 he would live to see the face of the Son of Man when JS had already seen His face probably many times up to that point in time.... let's assume for arguments sake that this Son of Man is not Christ but a servant in the hands of Christ, that who's work so closely prophetically parallels the work that Christ does that we mistake scripture references as being that Christ physically does it all... ( remember Christ says whether he says or does anything or his servants it is the same) "The heavens must retain Me until the restitution of all things"....Who is it that restores all things? I believe it's this Servant..."One mighty and strong" "Davidical king" etc. Being all one and the same individual.....
What is interesting in church history is that during the time that the 85th year of JS came about, and thereafter, different men begin to claim to be this "one mighty and strong" , so many in fact that the church made an official stance on the 85th section saying that it was already fulfilled through Presiding Bishop Edward Partridge ....these men were inundating the first presidency with spiritual claims that they were this Servant ...or this "One mighty and strong".... Now let's just assume that this timing is correct and that if he did live to be 85 he would see the face of this "Son of Man" (by the way Christ is the Son of God not the Son of any man) Hindsight tells us that Christ did not appear at that time.... To me what I find interesting is that if it is true that the Son of man is a different person than Christ and He is or was to appear at that approximate time (JS 85th yr) why would the devil deceive so many LDS men to claim to be this person, and that by revelation...as the church history confirms.... I would suggest that the devil was trying to cover something up through dilution....after all he knows scripture better than all of us combined...
I would also say that at that time of all these different men making their claims, that, at the most only one could be right....
Another interesting revelation received by apostle Orson Pratt ( but not canonized ) the Lord tells Orson Pratt " people pray for My coming and if I was to come in answer to their prayers it would be to their destruction as they are not prepared to receive Me"... He also told him that "the heavens must retain me until the restitution of all things"...
And I personally believe that this Servant...Davidical King...One Mighty and Strong... A man in the hands of Christ...etc etc is the One who restores all things BEFORE Christ's return, and prepares a people to receive him.... And hopefully may we all be the blessed ones that receive that great and marvelous privilege. ....

Abram, Jacob, Saul and others had the same problem... If the parents miss of revelation, not a problem for the Lord to correct it.

I copied this from a group in FB a few years ago.

My notes on Avraham Gileadi’s final Dreams and Visions class:
Avraham did not reference any dreams for this last class but instead he took us through verse by verse of Isaiah on how to prepare for the End Times as Isaiah instructs.
A great amount of information, explanation and verses were dedicated to our loving Savior and His redeeming role in these Last Days. Too many to list or itemize. (sorry)
The next greatest part of tonight’s lesson was the focus on the Latter Day Servant and his proxy saving roll as he emulates the Savior. Again too many verses listed to mention here but was truly eye opening!
Avraham explained that “A GREAT reversal of circumstances is coming to the world.” Mountains will be made low and valleys will be raised up, literally; however, the rich will also be made poor, and the poor will be exalted.
The King of Assyria (antichrist, counterfeit or left hand of the Lord) will make predictions and they will not come to pass. On the other hand, the Latter Day Servant (righteousness, right hand of the Lord) will also predict things to come, however, they WILL come to pass. This is how we will identify who the End Time Servant is. The counterfeit comes before the real deal and only the Servant prophesies truth that comes to pass.
The Lord’s End Time Servant is “central” to the end time Scenario that is coming.
The Servant’s mission is a worldwide, universal mission from the very start.
The Servant heralds the Lord’s coming, just as John the Baptist did for Jesus.
The Servants mission is to gather and restore the house of Israel.
The Servant is severely persecuted and suffers greatly (marred beyond recognition); then the Lord saves, empowers and sanctifies him.
Our mission is to emulate the Servant as he emulates the Savior.
Holding fast to the Lord means to hold fast to His End Time Servant.
The wicked try to destroy the Lords people and His Servant.
The Lords people will be sorely tried but if we endure we will see the Lord in person.
We need to go through trials to sanctify and purify ourselves of our iniquities.
Draw near unto the Lord and make your Calling and Election sure. (to become the elect)
Mercy comes on the heels of repentance. (Mighty prayer)
When we accept our rolls as proxy saviors on Mt. Zion the Lord will vindicate us.
Heavenly hosts will be participants in our end time efforts.
The Lord will fight our battles through empowering the Servant and restoring power.
If we are covenant keepers we will always have sufficient for our needs.
Trust in the Lord will help us overcome the fears that will come.
Conquering the temptation to ‘fear’ will help raise us to higher levels of spirituality.
Our earth keeps a Celestial law and will ascend from this telestial level to the new terrestrial, Millennial level and we need to raise the bar to a higher spiritual level if we don’t want to go into the dust with the wicked.

You may be thinking of Bruce R. McConkie. There are multiple schools of thought on this in the Church, and so it is unsurprising that General Authorities would have given opinions on it. I just think that Ben Gurion meets the literalistic criteria very well even down to his name and his position, and the timing of his "reign" so to speak, even though he was not literally a "king," but a head of state. And, of course, it seems more than a coincidence that he had so much interaction with Ezra Taft Benson.
