This is an interesting point... who would suffer most?

Younger people may use technology more for entertainment and social interaction, but older people rely on technology more for day to day necessities including water, food, health care, emergency services, etc. In other words, if we revert to a "low tech" society the entertainment and convenience aspects of technology may be the least of our concerns.

Young people can generally handle more physical difficulties and tend to be very adaptable... bouncing back from all sorts of things. I'm not "old" yet, but long past the point where I could bounce back from just about anything and not be affected long term physically or psychologically. If I had to live an agrarian lifestyle without internal combustion engines (for example)... it would take some "adjusting".

I believe that Zion will be high tech. So if you desire low tech, stay in the world, don't gather when called.

I have wondered if Zion will be beyond technology. As an example, it will look primitive on the surface, but if one could delve into it, one would see nature obeying the inhabitants. Clothing would be simple, but made in a way that doesn't occur to us now. Transportation would be more powered by thought and desire than by vehicles. No need for factories (which are very tedious and stulting to work in).

DJ, I'm curious, what's your reasoning?

Technology covers a very broad gambit of subject matter, including production technology. To a large extent it seems like this discussion is focusing on communications technology. What kind of technology, if any, do you think God generally uses to communicate? What about production technology?

The image of God driving around in a big, high-powered, high-tech tractor reminds me of Mohamar Ghadafi back in the day.

Hopefully we won't have to find out.
It could be worse than just not being able to type on this forum...

I know that in the Celestial Kingdom (and maybe the Millennium) the only thing that could pass for the Internet of a TV is called.... Urim & Thummim - the ULTIMATE filter :D

Knowledge is a key to the power of God. Knowledge is how things really are. We for the most part don't have much real knowledge in how things work today. Knowledge, like everthing else is built line upon line. If we are to obtain any degree of the knowledge of God, there will be lots of steps in between where we are and where God is. Each step will become an improvement of our technology.

How does the urim and thummun work? What about the Liahona? God uses physical laws to bring about his desires. As we learn those truths, we will learn some pretty amazing technology.

I'm sure that the technology of today is pretty primative and as we increase in knowledge the processes involved will become much simpler than the convoluted processes that we use today. If we can learn to communicate with matter itself, I'm sure that many processes will be possible that today are impossible. I think of when Elijah commanded the mountains to move and they obeyed. Now there is something to learn. What if we could extract materials based upon their willingness to obey? What about shaping them by command? I want to see that CNC tool! But I'm sure this will evolve over time.

I've read reports that the natives viewed "white men's" technology as magic. Show an ipad to one today and what would they think? They couldn't explain it other than the word magic. In fact, how many of us can explain it in other than generalistic terms?

The Lord is the creator. Wouldn't his children want learn to emulate him? Would he start them out with creating a world or something simpler like the conversion of hydrogen to electrical energy? I expect this to be a totally fun process.

More than a filter. Past, present, and future all at once.

The thing about our current technology is that it all mimics the sacred technology that was re-emphasized (Urim & Thummim, seer stones, temples, veils) and revealed (Liahona, light stones) by Joseph Smith. The Liahona received text messages 2600 years ago, and it was essentially a GPS device.

Fans talk with pride about Star Trek pre-empting our use of hand-held communicators and scanning devices, but the reality is that Smith was into this stuff, on this continent, long before most of the pertinent inventors even got started in this country.

The Millennium will only involve "high-tech" outside of Zion. Within Zion it will be about sacred tech, which is far beyond what we can come up with on our own without the Priesthood. It will use simple stones instead of anything resembling microprocessors.

Back to the contrast between information and communications technology and production technology. I have just spent the past week doing a gig in the "high tech" food processing industry, and when it comes to food and what we are going to eat in this country, all I've got to say is . . . . we are so skrewed. Living without our smart phones, ipads, computers and GPS will be one thing, and eventually acquiring sacred technology to replace those things is one thing. Learning to live without food will be another. Neither JS, nor anyone else since Adam and Eve were kicked out of the Garden have figured out a technology to do without the need for food and water. God did provide manna for awhile, and I guess He can and will again, if necessary. But even then it wasn't without a little sweat of the brow. The House of Israel had to learn from hard experience that it didn't harvest/gather itself, and there was no way to store it. When it comes to the technology for producing and providing food, I suspect that God's sacred technology will be very simple and basic . . . and will still require a little elbow grease and sweat of the brow.

My wife feels a collapse is coming really soon, while I've believe when the next generation of children are old enough to have children, and the technology has become ultra advanced by our current standard, then we'll have a collapse.

I believe the current generation of children are so narcissistic, so undisciplined, so unrighteous, that when they have children it will be really bad.

I believe when the next generation are so dependent on technology, and there's a collapse, imagine an entire world of zombies unable to prepare their own food, and unwilling to work together.

Talk about a collapse!

You can always procure the stuff you need before the collapse. Places like http://www.lehmans.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; for all your Luddite needs... Maybe the Amish will take on interns to retrain us how to live in the 1880s.
