Casting out Evil Spirits

Postby »

I just walked into work and a lady that I work with was talking with everyone about some evil spirits that are in their home. I listened to what happened and then told her that if she would like, I could remove them from their home. She looked at me weird and said, "How can you do that?" I briefly told her about the priesthood, how it is Christ's power and that I have done this several times in the past. I told her that since I speak Spanish, I can communicate with her husband, we can read from the scriptures, then pray together. Her husband is going to call me in the afternoon. I am going to start fasting right now. Any suggestions on scriptures that I can share with them so that they understand Christ's power over evil spirits + restoration of priesthood power + anything else that may be helpful for them. Not planning on reading a whole lot, but I will let the Spirit guide. They are Catholic.

Just the stories about Jesus in the Bible come to mind.

My neighbor is dealing with what I think are possession problems with her son and I'm not sure how to help. I don't think she believes in evil spirits. She's not LDS.

Are you familiar with Mel Fish and his work? He has written several books about this and describes how one can get rid of these spirits, whether disembodied or evil spirits. This is a link that talks about him and his books. http://latterdaycommentary.com/2013/03/ ... nto-light/ My husband and I have read his books, met the man and used some of the suggestions to take care of some issues in my life. I have benefited from learning about these things. If you would like more detail PM me and I will be happy to talk with you about them.

Thanks, kathedralegs. I'm not so concerned with how to get rid of them as I am about bringing the topic up with my neighbor. I'm worried that if I mention that her son might be possessed, our relationship might get a little strained, if you know what I mean. I can't help her get rid of evil spirits that she doesn't believe exists, I don't think.

"Perfect love caseth out all fear " - I love that saying when thinking if these things. I do recommend reading the book, "Conquering Spiritual Evil " by Don't Mendenhall.

CTS,

A book which Frank likes very much, which encompasses many, many aspects on this subject is, "The Handbook for Spiritual Warfare", written by Dr. Ed Murphey. It's the most comprehensive book he has found on spiritual warfare. Perhaps you might find information there which can help you figure out how to even approach your neighbor about this sensitive, but important, issue.

Thanks. I guess it wouldn't hurt to read up on the subject. I'll have to do something after I get the nerve to talk to her.

Not to say you are weak or not enough but the Lord works in pairs, take another priesthood holder with you.
You are truly a brave soul! I wish more brethren would have such faith in their priesthood abilities.

I agree but I would add that you shouldn't bring someone that has fear of these things.

Yes, after I wrote that I imagined how he might ask someone to go with him and if he would find someone. Im not sure how many are timid or fearful of rebuking evil but I do know that it can indeed be overwhelming even to the strong man.

My husband had the responsibility of casting out an evil spirit and that spirit followed us through our travels for a couple years. Serious stuff, real stuff, scary stuff. Believe it or not but my husband could feel the anger of this evil one once we got back to our house and said the spirit was huffing and puffing a tantrum fit outside our bedroom window. Good thing he couldnt get in. He was very powerful, or seemed to be. We have had many experiences with this specific spirit, it does make me wonder (but not too much) how they have so much "presence" and power.

That's really interesting actually. Thanks for sharing. That would certainly be concerning. My concern is that fear can cause openings for these evil spirits and they can jump into someone weakened by fear.

I have over a handful of family of family members that have dealt with evil. Half basically refuses to talk about their experiences. They are afraid of even thinking about it.

Indeed. It is known to happen when people are weakened too by illness, surgery, etc. it is very important to get a blessing before having any major surgery done or prolonged sickness.

We are weakened when our bodies are weakened, gives you something to ponder about. Why are our bodies so important, why must we keep our bodies so clean (WoW) why should we eat right, sleep enough, exercise regularly, not deface our bodies, etc? Because the body is the "Temple" of our spirit and the companionship of the Holy Spirit. Maybe the spirit is weakened when its house is weak? Everyone knows when we are not healthy ( sick, injured, despair etc) we are more susceptable to the influences of the adversary.

Did you know it is quite common for people to get "wacky" after hip replacement surgery? Just one example I have been informed of.

It is not uncommon for abused children to become possessed; especially for those who have been sexually abused. There is also some correlation between the sexually abused and multiple personality disorder.

Are you still having problems with that particular spirit you were discussing?

I was once told by an orthodox Christian on an anti-LDS website that the moment I prayed about the Book of Mormon, I opened the pathway for a demon to enter my body. It was explained to me that it was the demon who witnessed to me; and not the Holy Spirit. Apparently, according to her, I am stilled possessed. It is not the Jesus Christ of the Bible I believe in. Also, it is not our Father in Heaven who I am praying to. :-s

Of course, you KNOW the God that you worship, and you know that this is not so.

That is not to say that demons are not aware of the church or that they cannot manifest a false acceptance of it. My companion and I were teaching a Catholic priest in the mission field and had just finished talking about Joseph Smith's first vision when, suddenly, he rose to his feet and said "I know that Joseph Smith saw God the Father and his son Jesus Christ! I can see them right now, standing before me!" He was shouting when he said this, and foaming at the mouth, then he fell down, exhausted. Who was possessed?

The Spirit manifests itself in peace and increased light and knowledge, wisdom and understanding-- a peace that surpasseth all understanding. Satan may masquerade as an angel of light, but there is always a dark edge. Moses was aware of that after his visitation by God and the following imposition of Satan. There is a peace that comes with the gospel and the Spirit that Satan cannot imitate or duplicate. It is obvious to those who have the spirit of discernment.

You and your husband will want to learn how to shield up about these things - the Mendenhalls books as well as John Pontius on his blog have some great insight about shielding up. It has help me many many times.

If you cast out but don't give the evil spirit a place to go, it can come right back near you. If you don't tell it to leave immediately, they are cunning and will stay since there is no time frame. If you don't specify to "never come back" they can often come back. They will still be obeying, but because the person casting out is not specific, they will find all the loopholes. BE SPECIFIC!!

Amen. Satan was the original attorney. "By the power of the Melchizedek priesthood which I hold and in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ I command you to depart and to NOT return!" Aaronic priesthood holders (priests) can also call down angels from heaven. shields can be placed.

Mel Fish (a man I greatly admire) instructs us that we should direct/command the evil spirits to go toward the light that they see. It is worth getting his book if this is something you need, or are interested in.

So I fasted at work during the afternoon and was praying to prepare my spirit. I got home, went for a walk with my wife and baby and she called me. I got my father to go with me. We went in, talked with the guy that saw the spirits last night (he pays rent to live in the basement) and with my friend and her husband. We got to know each other and I began to talk about spirits.

I taught them that the spirit world is here on Earth and sometimes we can see the spirits that are here. I said that there are good spirits, that could be our ancestors, our future children, or others. I taught them about where evil spirits come from, briefly quoting John's revelation about the dragon and the third part of the stars.

We read from Mark 1 about how these evil spirits recognized and obeyed Christ because of His authority. I told them that we believe this authority was restored in 1829 and that we use it to help others. She asked how much we charge to do it and I said nothing because Christ never charged anybody anything when He was here. We all knelt down together and I led us in prayer. I commanded the spirits to leave in the name of Christ and blessed the home to be a place where the Spirit could be felt.

Talking with them afterward, I found out that the guy that saw the spirits is actually LDS, he was baptized in February in SLC. He takes TRAX from West Jordan to Rose Park every Sunday to go to church. I told him that my wife and I attend a Spanish ward here in West Jordan and that he can go with us. He said he would and I offered to pick him up Sunday.

It was a great visit, feels great to help others and express our love for them. :D I'll ask my workmate today how she feels at her home.

Amazing faith to speak up to someone you don't know. I would also suggest figuring out how it may have gotten there in the first place. Sometimes it can be invited back depending how and why it came in the first place. Others here seem to say that is the case at least. I wouldn't know.

Doug Mendenhall totally disses this approach and says we should just send them to hell. I don't know myself, but my favorite solution was one in which it was recommended to send them to the Savior's storage area and let Him deal with them. Sort of an in between approach.

An extremely "sighted" person told me to "send them where Father would have them go. Hell is their home. They are comfortable there. Heavenly Father has far more 'interesting' places to send them." ;)

Yes, I spoke with them afterward saying that the house was blessed, however they could invite bad spirits by fighting, pornography, contention, etc. I told them to always let love and peace abound in the home and they won't have to fear a thing.

Just talked with her to see how they feel and she said that this morning she felt good. I guess her brother in law thought that we were going to come in white shirts and ties so when I showed up with my "Camaro Z/28" shirt and jeans he was kind of taken aback. He thought that all Mormons wore white shirts and ties 24/7 - He told her that he feels more comfortable knowing we are just "regular people."

Feels good to go out and make new friends on the Lord's errand. I have been praying for an opportunity like this to present itself to me for the last month or so. God truly does answer our prayers, brothers and sisters. :)
