"From book to boom: how the Mormons plan a city for 500,000 in Florida"

Post by sushi_chef »

"Everything about the Deseret cattle and citrus ranch, in central Florida, is massive. The property itself occupies 290,000 acres of land – more than nine times the size of San Francisco and almost 20 times the size of Manhattan. It is one of the largest ranches in the country, held by the one of the biggest landowners in the state: the Mormon church.

On an overcast weekday afternoon, Mormon missionaries give tours of the vast estate. Fields, orange trees and grazing animals stretch as far as the eye can see. While central Florida may be best known for Disney World, the ranch – roughly an hour’s drive away – is nearly 10 times bigger. It is home to a jaw-dropping 40,000 cows and has grown oranges for millions of glasses of juice.

Now there are ambitious, far-reaching plans to transform much of this land into an entirely new “city”, home to as many as 500,000 people by 2080. Deseret has said that while nothing will be built here for decades, its plans are necessary....

Is it going to be a city made up of new $250,000 to $350,000 homes to house the financially secure members of the Church who want to retire and move to Florida? If it is another "Villages," I am happy for them.

I wish someone would build new $50,000 condos to house the rest of us who want to retire somewhere nice but haven't been as successful at keeping the locusts away.

Is this city of 500,000 going to be built before the cleansing or after?

If there is a war coming in the future, perhaps this is meant to be a sanctuary city which will provide plenty of food for those who can get there from the east coast. However, if the oceans rise from climate change or a pole shift, Florida may find itself underwater someday. Joel Skousen rates Florida as a 0 strategically.

Hmm... Why, really? (I read the article.)

I did see this about City Creek Mall: "Bishop H David Burton said it would create the necessary jobs and added that “any parcel of property the church owns that is not used directly for ecclesiastical worship is fully taxed at its market value”." It seems he's saying that property tax must have been a very large amount, and they thought it best to make the property self-sufficient.
