Here's a guy who says it won't work for defense.
Snake shot, basically.

That firearm uses .45 Colt or .410 shot as opposed to .38 Spl. Therefore it doesn't answer my question.

I agree. I do think the Taurus Public defender will do a fine job, however. Let's face it, pulling a cc gun is used for intimidation purposes a good share of the time. The cylinder could be loaded with 3 410's and 2 .45 Long Colt just for good measure. An 80 year old man in a defense mode may find it comforting to have the possibility of hitting an attacker with a little wider spread than having 5 rounds miss the target altogether.

Just for fun I post this:

Did you really look at those pages? The Cabela's product page shows exactly what I previously mentioned: .38 Spl rounds with #4 or #9 bird shot. In those forums I saw a couple people mention loading three pellets of .000 buck into a .357, but not a .38.

So, at this point in time I am convinced that nobody is commercially manufacturing .38 Spl ammo with buckshot. Perhaps you can load it on your own, but using hand loads for self defense can be a very bad idea. An attorney could use that to make you look very bad.

This is so true...DO NOT USE HOME GROWN RELOADS, OF ANY CALIBER, FOR SELF DEFENSE!

May as well jump up to 410 shot shells

Just after I got my CCW permit, I asked the Orem PD what they were officially issued for duty loads. They used Remington Golden Saber rounds, which I've used a LOT since then. If the police can use it to defend the community, I can use it to defend my home and family.

A 60 grain jacketed hollowpoint will leave a three inch barrel at about 1,074 feet per second, giving you about 150 foot pounds of energy. You can take the risk but I'd prefer to put a 230 grain JHP out of my four inch, .45 caliber barrel at 850 feet per second which should carry about 350 foot pounds of energy.

For a long time I carried a .380, but one day I was in a mall when a shooting took place. I decided then to carry something with more stopping power. One of these days I'll buy a subcompact 9mm like the Glock 43 to have a small and lightweight 9mm to carry when I don't want the weight and bulk of my .45, but until then I will carry a .380 only when there's no other choice.

Excerpt from website:
This is one look at historical data, but other studies show similar results. There’s not a tremendous difference in performance between common calibers. Listening to caliber selection arguments, one might expect some calibers to be 38 times more effective than others, but it’s just not the case.

So what’s my point? The table above is most definitely NOT a guide to caliber selection. Just because one caliber shows higher one shot stop percentage or fewer hits per incapacitation doesn’t mean all that much. As I mentioned earlier, there are simply far too many variables at play to ever make absolute judgments like that.

If there is a point to be made, it’s right there in front of us in the numbers. Consider the number of shots to incapacitate. Not how many, but the fact that you have to have hits in the first place. Choose whatever ammo you’re comfortable with and spend more of your energy developing the skills to make hits when you need to, and less arguing about which caliber is the “magic bullet.”

Anyone wondering what the difference are between a .32 auto acp magazine and a .380 acp mag....well, just click on this."

Colt Model 1903 Pocket Hammerless .32 ACP & Model 1908 Pocket Hammerless .380 ACP - Factory Magazine Variations

Anyone know where the .32 auto acp mags can be purchased? I see where some places are selling .380 mags and calling them .32. I want the 7 hole mag.

Ok full disclosure: I own the Serbian M88. It feels great in the hand and is actually modeled after Browning's 1903 single action semi auto. Great little pistol, although I wish it was a smidge more accurate. It's enough to get the job done though. Solid steel production, too. If you prefer a longer barrel, go with their M70. Also a nice win. Consequently, these are made by Zastava. They have some others in that price range that are pretty formidable Sig Sauer knock offs....

EAA is great too, but I don't think I'd go Kel-Tec. They go bang, but I wouldn't trust my life to them. Why haven't you listed any Bersas on there? They have some great .380s under $300 that are modeled after the Walther PPK, except they are built better, more reliably, and way less expensive. Bersa Thunder is a great gun, and my wife's personal favorite (she eats bulls eyes with that thing).

My $.02.

Actually, I know next to nothing about types and efficiencies of guns. I've owned a few guns and have a couple and only am looking for a nice CC, but I'm not hard pressed. I'm going to look into the Bersa brand. Thanks.
I do like the .410 idea, though.

I posted the above merely to let the interested check into a gun that strikes their fancy.
