We went in, talked with the guy that saw the spirits last night (he pays rent to live in the basement) and with my friend and her husband. We got to know each other and I began to talk about spirits.

I taught them that the spirit world is here on Earth and sometimes we can see the spirits that are here. I said that there are good spirits, that could be our ancestors, our future children, or others. I taught them about where evil spirits come from, briefly quoting John's revelation about the dragon and the third part of the stars.

We read from Mark 1 about how these evil spirits recognized and obeyed Christ because of His authority. I told them that we believe this authority was restored in 1829 and that we use it to help others. She asked how much we charge to do it and I said nothing because Christ never charged anybody anything when He was here. We all knelt down together and I led us in prayer. I commanded the spirits to leave in the name of Christ and blessed the home to be a place where the Spirit could be felt.

Talking with them afterward, I found out that the guy that saw the spirits is actually LDS, he was baptized in February in SLC. He takes TRAX from West Jordan to Rose Park every Sunday to go to church. I told him that my wife and I attend a Spanish ward here in West Jordan and that he can go with us. He said he would and I offered to pick him up Sunday.

It was a great visit, feels great to help others and express our love for them. :D I'll ask my workmate today how she feels at her home.
Amazing faith to speak up to someone you don't know. I would also suggest figuring out how it may have gotten there in the first place. Sometimes it can be invited back depending how and why it came in the first place. Others here seem to say that is the case at least. I wouldn't know.
Yes, I spoke with them afterward saying that the house was blessed, however they could invite bad spirits by fighting, pornography, contention, etc. I told them to always let love and peace abound in the home and they won't have to fear a thing.

Just talked with her to see how they feel and she said that this morning she felt good. I guess her brother in law thought that we were going to come in white shirts and ties so when I showed up with my "Camaro Z/28" shirt and jeans he was kind of taken aback. He thought that all Mormons wore white shirts and ties 24/7 - He told her that he feels more comfortable knowing we are just "regular people."

Feels good to go out and make new friends on the Lord's errand. I have been praying for an opportunity like this to present itself to me for the last month or so. God truly does answer our prayers, brothers and sisters. :)

First I would like to say the only books that are going to help fight demons are the Bible inspired version the 1908 Book of Mormon and the Doctrine and Covenants. Demons are a real threat to humanity. We know about revelation that demons cannot become human so in order for them to feel emotions that a human would feel they possess us. There are ways to get rid of a possession. Joseph Smith and his first miracle prayed in the name of Jesus Christ for the demon to leave. The diamond had to leave. There are in the Bible different types of demons. Remember when the apostles pray for demon to leave and the demon would not leave and Jesus said it would only leave by prayer and fasting. There are structures of the demonic possession. It can be easy to cast a demon out or it can be very hard. You must pray in Jesus name through God the Father by the power of the Holy Ghost to cast out a demon. You can use holy oil that's been blessed by a priest to sprinkle on it on its head. This is just a few ways.

Why the specific edition?

Many easily would admit or be surprised / disturbed at how pervasive evil is or can be in their lives... K.B. said in mosiah 2:
.
31 And now, my brethren, I would that ye should do as ye have hitherto done. As ye have kept my commandments, and also the commandments of my father, and have prospered, and have been kept from falling into the hands of your enemies, even so if ye shall keep the commandments of my son, or the commandments of God which shall be delivered unto you by him, ye shall prosper in the land, and your enemies shall have no power over you.

32 But, O my people, beware lest there shall arise contentions among you, and ye list to obey the evil spirit, which was spoken of by my father Mosiah.

33 For behold, there is a wo pronounced upon him who listeth to obey that spirit; for if he listeth to obey him, and remaineth and dieth in his sins, the same drinketh damnation to his own soul; for he receiveth for his wages an everlasting punishment, having transgressed the law of God contrary to his own knowledge.

According to the evil spirit we list to obey is how evil in its endless modes and manors manifests...

Pretty important to have an eye single to God's glory, yes?

Apathy, vanity, anger, pride, etc etc serve as thread wrapped around us until such becomes flaxen chords.

I love the freedom that mightily redeemed through the atonement of Jesus Christ, Jacob, declares and inspires:

2 2nephi 9:

39 O, my beloved brethren, remember the awfulness in transgressing against that Holy God, and also the awfulness of yielding to the enticings of that cunning one. Remember, to be carnally-minded is death, and to be spiritually-minded is life eternal.

40 O, my beloved brethren, give ear to my words. Remember the greatness of the Holy One of Israel. Do not say that I have spoken hard things against you; for if ye do, ye will revile against the truth; for I have spoken the words of your Maker. I know that the words of truth are hard against all uncleanness; but the righteous fear them not, for they love the truth and are not shaken.

41 O then, my beloved brethren, come unto the Lord, the Holy One. Remember that his paths are righteous. Behold, the way for man is narrow, but it lieth in a straight course before him, and the keeper of the gate is the Holy One of Israel; and he employeth no servant there; and there is none other way save it be by the gate; for he cannot be deceived, for the Lord God is his name.

42 And whoso knocketh, to him will he open; and the wise, and the learned, and they that are rich, who are puffed up because of their learning, and their wisdom, and their riches—yea, they are they whom he despiseth; and save they shall cast these things away, and consider themselves fools before God, and come down in the depths of humility, he will not open unto them.

43 But the things of the wise and the prudent shall be hid from them forever—yea, that happiness which is prepared for the saints.

44 O, my beloved brethren, remember my words. Behold, I take off my garments, and I shake them before you; I pray the God of my salvation that he view me with his all-searching eye; wherefore, ye shall know at the last day, when all men shall be judged of their works, that the God of Israel did witness that I shook your iniquities from my soul, and that I stand with brightness before him, and am rid of your blood.

45 O, my beloved brethren, turn away from your sins; shake off the chains of him that would bind you fast; come unto that God who is the rock of your salvation.

46 Prepare your souls for that glorious day when justice shall be administered unto the righteous, even the day of judgment, that ye may not shrink with awful fear; that ye may not remember your awful guilt in perfectness, and be constrained to exclaim: Holy, holy are thy judgments, O Lord God Almighty—but I know my guilt; I transgressed thy law, and my transgressions are mine; and the devil hath obtained me, that I am a prey to his awful misery.

47 But behold, my brethren, is it expedient that I should awake you to an awful reality of these things? Would I harrow up your souls if your minds were pure? Would I be plain unto you according to the plainness of the truth if ye were freed from sin?

48 Behold, if ye were holy I would speak unto you of holiness; but as ye are not holy, and ye look upon me as a teacher, it must needs be expedient that I teach you the consequences of sin.

59 Behold, my soul abhorreth sin, and my heart delighteth in righteousness; and I will praise the holy name of my God.

50 Come, my brethren, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters; and he that hath no money, come buy and eat; yea, come buy wine and milk without money and without price.

51 Wherefore, do not spend money for that which is of no worth, nor your labor for that which cannot satisfy. Hearken diligently unto me, and remember the words which I have spoken; and come unto the Holy One of Israel, and feast upon that which perisheth not, neither can be corrupted, and let your soul delight in fatness.

52 Behold, my beloved brethren, remember the words of your God; pray unto him continually by day, and give thanks unto his holy name by night. Let your hearts rejoice..."

The 1908 edition is an edition put out by the RLDS church, correct? From what I found, it is said by the producers to be the closest edition to the original that Joseph Smith dictated.

I personally don't think that claim should be made about any edition of the Book of Mormon unless Joseph Smith can ratify it, which he can't. I do find that different editions and formats can highlight different aspects in the text. However, ultimately the truth is available through the Spirit and I haven't found any edition of the Book of Mormon that the Spirit can't work with to guide a person to truth and understanding.

Thomas Griffith, an editor for Time magazine some years ago, wrote of our era: “We are so caught up in the complexity and clamor of our way of life that we do not realize how much all of these powerful efforts to attract or divert us are a tax on our spirit: they do a double harm, in the triviality of what they offer and the fatigue which they engender, that keeps us from doing something more profitable with our time. Even to screen out that portion of our culture that we do not want becomes an effort of will. Simplicity of life is no longer ours to begin with, as it was in the days of remote farms, and of school lessons written on the back of a shovel. In a world of congestion, shattering noise and an infinity of seductions, we must, in the midst of a carnival, find and insist upon our own decent simplicity” (The Waist-High Culture [1959], 188).

We believe in being honest, true, chaste, benevolent, virtuous, and in doing good to all men. . . . If there is anything virtuous, lovely, or of good report or praiseworthy, we seek after these things.15

"Second, conduct a self-assessment of your own consumption of media, or ask yourself, using the terminology of today’s generation, “What’s on my playlist?”

As you decide on a tagline, you then need to assess whether the decisions you are making around media are compatible with your tagline. In other words, is your tagline credible when weighed against your playlist? When referring to your playlists, I’m not just talking about your iPods or MP3 players, although they would certainly be included. Your playlist would include all of the daily decisions you make.

President Cecil O. Samuelson, in his opening devotional of winter semester this year, shared a quote from President David O. McKay regarding self-mastery and personal character, and then he said:

While President McKay did not live during the time of the Internet, texting, tweeting, reality television, MP3 players, or social networking, the principles he taught are just as vital today as they were in the twentieth century. We all know the blessings of appropriate self-control and the heartache attached to addictions or indiscretions of every kind. Just like King Benjamin, we can’t list all the ways we need to practice self-control, but King Benjamin’s advice is also absolutely timely.16

And then President Samuelson quoted the closing verses of one of my favorite chapters in the Book of Mormon—as it is, in my opinion, the perfect blueprint for how we should live our lives:

And finally, I cannot tell you all the things whereby ye may commit sin; for there are divers ways and means, even so many that I cannot number them.

But this much I can tell you, that if ye do not watch yourselves, and your thoughts, and your words, and your deeds, and observe the commandments of God, and continue in the faith of what ye have heard concerning the coming of our Lord, even unto the end of your lives, ye must perish. And now, O man, remember, and perish not.17

Several years ago I was visiting with a friend—Dale Andersen—from Mesa, Arizona. At the time Dale was serving as a stake president in Mesa, and he shared a personal experience with me that, with his permission, I’d like to share with you this morning. He said:

I was preparing for our stake conference and having a bit of a stupor of thought on what I should share with the members of my stake. On the Friday night prior to conference I had a most peculiar dream—one of those dreams that was as real as any experience I have ever had while awake.

I dreamed I was at a family reunion with my entire family—my wife, my children, and my grandchildren. We were all gathered in the backyard of our home and enjoying a wonderful spring afternoon together.

And then I saw a most amazing and beautiful sight. It was a flock of blackbirds—but not an ordinary flock of blackbirds. This was one of those flocks that must have had tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, of birds, all flying gracefully in perfect unison.

The birds would dart one direction, and then, as if cued by their leader, they’d immediately dart the other direction. Not a bird missed a beat. I stood there with my family—eyes transfixed. It was beautiful and captivating.

President Andersen continued:

As we watched this spectacle, the birds came closer and closer to us. It was all very exciting to see. And as we watched, we noticed the birds were pairing off two by two, and it appeared as though they were landing in the yards of all of the homes in my neighborhood. I thought this was rather peculiar. And then, as they got closer to my own backyard, the scene began to come into focus, and I realized in an instant that these were not blackbirds after all. These were dark, evil spirits!

Immediately I panicked and yelled to my family to run into the house and to lock the doors and windows. I was frantically trying to make sure all the members of my family were accounted for and safe—my sweetheart, my children, and their children. We ran through the house slamming the windows and shutting the doors and locking them tight. I gathered everyone together in our family room, where we would be safe, but then, as I turned around, there they were. I found myself standing between these two terribly evil beings and my precious family.

President Andersen said:

A window had been left ajar in the basement, and they had found their way into our home.

You know and I know that the adversary and his evil spirits are descending upon our families and trying to find their way into our homes, our apartments, and our dorms. At first they appear to be beautiful, enticing, and captivating—even to the point that, if we are not careful, our families will stand right in their path gazing upon them as though we were extending an open invitation to them to enter our homes.

So again I would ask that you consider the question “What’s on my playlist?”

Arizona-based exorcist turns to Skype to cast out world’s demons

Mother Teresa, the Roman Catholic nun who devoted her life to serving the poor, was exorcised on her deathbed in late 1996, according to published reports, because the Archbishop of Calcutta feared she was “being attacked by the devil.”

Exorcisms, the religious practice of driving the evil spirit or demon out of someone who is believed to be possessed, are on the rise, according to the National Catholic Register.

“If Mother Teresa can have a demon, anybody can,” said the Rev. Bob Larson, an Arizona-based, self-described Protestant exorcist. “People think if you have a demon, you must be an evil person. When I came back to America (after traveling), I started looking for it here, and I found it pretty quickly. There was a lot of evil.”

Larson travels the country presenting exorcism seminars and charging for one-on-one sessions.

Not everyone is a believer. Maureen McAllister, the proprietor of the Facebook page “Bob Larson is a Fraud,” said multiple members of her Facebook page have caught Larson exorcising the same woman in different cities.

“He has a life of lying,” McAllister said via Facebook message. “He now claims in his recent book to be a doctor. … I wouldn’t be surprised if his doctoral degree he (gave to) himself from his (exorcism) school.”

In 2013, Larson founded the International School of Exorcism, an online training institution, because he said he saw an increasing need for modern-day exorcists.

People can purchase the school’s courses as a bundle to include all three levels of the program for $500 or $995 for each individual level.

Since its start, the school has graduated nearly 1,000 people, Larson said.

“I have trained thousands of people all over the world who go out and do exactly what I do, exactly the way I do it, and it works,” Larson said. “I expect before I go to see the Lord, I’m going to have thousands and thousands of people all over the world who have been through that level of training. They’re all out doing it, so I don’t need to perpetuate any kind of legacy – that is my legacy.”

Larson estimates that he has performed thousands of exorcisms and believes half of the world’s population has demons.

“The people in the Catholic Church who say that exorcisms are rare, don’t do exorcisms,” Larson said. “The reality is, if you talk to priests and active ministry, they will tell you it’s not rare and that the church is scrambling to train and find enough exorcists to meet the need.”

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Phoenix declined to comment on the issue, and Larson has many skeptics who question his credibility.

Larson has made numerous television appearances, including those featuring Anderson Cooper, Oprah Winfrey and Dr. Phil, each of whom have given him a platform, but also included those who discredit him.

“People can say whatever they want to say about me,” Larson said. “If you do what I do, it’s controversial – of course it is. There are going to be those who try to discredit it, but I know my calling. I know what my responsibility is, and I have a deep desire to do this.”

Skeptics have repeatedly criticized Larson’s Skype encounters online.

Four years ago, Larson started performing exorcisms over Skype for his followers overseas. Since then, he said he has performed hundreds of paid exorcisms over Skype alone.

On Larson’s website, it says a Skype encounter costs $395.

“He just adapted an old sensationalistic trick to get poor naive suckers to pay nearly $300 per hour for what is, in my opinion, his version of role-playing therapy,” McAllister said via Facebook message. “Some people want to believe their problems are caused by demons and he, in my opinion, intentionally mislabeled metaphorical demons for metaphysical demons.”

Larson said there is no such thing as a typical exorcism. However, in all of Larson’s in-person encounters, others restrain the possessed person for safety reasons.

Larson repeatedly presses his cross and Bible onto the possessed person’s back and head to “stab” the demon with the Holy Spirit. The group surrounding the possessed person chants various blessings and tells the demon to “get out.”

Larson, who is affiliated with the Spiritual Freedom Church and once hosted a radio talk show called “Talk Back,” believes “if Christ were here, he would use Skype.”

Larson said he will continue his efforts to extinguish demons from the world’s population and doesn’t expect the number of exorcisms he performs to subside.

“This phenomenon is very much a part of church life,” Larson said. “This is more than spinning heads and spitting green pea soup. … It’s not going away anytime soon.”
