Weapon of the Strong
Terrorism of the State

The interview is one of the journalist’s best tools. If done right, an interview provides a considerable amount of information about the views of the interviewee and interviewer, while also informing the reader about the subjects covered. Certain journalists made the interview an art form in its own right. Relatively recent examples of this include the Jann Wenner’s Rolling Stone interview with John Lennon in 1971, David Frost’s interview of Richard Nixon in 1977, Alex Haley’s interview of Malcolm X, and Ignacio Ramonet’s interview of Fidel Castro. Two of these interviews have been published in book form ( Ramonet and Castro; Wenner and Lennon, with the Lennon interview being twice made into a book); one was the related to one of the best-selling books of the 20th Century (Alex Haley’s Malcolm X); and the Frost-Nixon interviews were watched by millions on television, while also being remade into a film drama almost thirty years later.

I mention these interviews as a means of introducing the first book by the editors of the political-cultural web magazine State of Nature. This book, titled Weapon of the Strong: Conversations on State Terrorism, features thirteen interviews. The interviewees are philosophically from the left side of the political spectrum and come from five different countries. They include Noam Chomsky, attorney Marjorie Cohn, several professors and the director of Swiss Institute for Peace and Energy Research. The interviewers and editors are Chan Aksan and Jon Bailes. The conversations cover topics that include state-sponsored terrorism, the Unites States as a terrorist state, the nature of economic terrorism as facilitated by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank, the role of the United Nations, and the US role in the Middle East, to name but a few.

weapons_of_the_strongThroughout the text is an underlying question of language and its meaning. Why is one act considered terrorism while another act that is essentially the same not considered so? Is it the actor that determines whether or not an act is terroristic? Why is the US hesitant to accept the commonly held definition of terrorism? Is the reason because doing so would indict the United States as a terrorist state? These are just a small number of the questions raised and addressed in this tightly edited and intellectually stimulating collection.

Chomsky discusses pointlessness of international law given the fact that it is the most powerful nations (most specifically, the US and UK, although Russia and China have managed to counterbalance some excesses) that set up structures to implement it. Furthermore, their sheer power creates a situation where their actions define the nature of those structures, Should a group of smaller nations decide to go against that nature, the more powerful just ignore those demands.

In South African Patrick Bond’s discussion of Washington’s economic terrorism, Bond brings up the inability of Nelson Mandela to refuse the IMF structural adjustment forced on his nation after the end of apartheid. This “adjustment” included insisting that the new government pay off the prior government’s debts. Bond and the editors rightly point out that South Africa was a victim of US economic terrorism. One need look no further than Cyprus to see the latest victim of this form of terrorism. It can be argued that the terrorist regime in the case of Cyprus (and Greece, Spain and Portugal) was the European Union and Germany, but in doing so, one would have to ignore the role played by giant US-based financial houses in the manipulation of those nations’ economies the past decade.

The editors’ introduction ties the thirteen interviews together. They draw a line from Roosevelt to Obama, pointing to the continuity of policy when it comes to the pursuit of US dominance in the world. In one instance, they discuss the US support for the Suharto regime in Indonesia and the slaughter in East Timor under Nixon; in another, they discuss the US support for the Shah of Iran and Jimmy Carter’s unabashed support for the man who sat on the Peacock Throne. They tie up these and other instances of US-sponsored genocide and brutality with the knot of US imperialism, still humanity’s number one enemy.

This is a valuable text. Building on themes addressed on their State of Nature website, Aksan and Bailes have compiled an intellectually challenging and forthright collection of conversations certain to create further conversations of their own. Each interview could easily stand alone. Together, they overwhelm.

A Sad Anniversary for Native Americans
Native American activist Leonard Peltier, who has been imprisoned for 37 years, still awaits justice.

Native American activist Leonard Peltier has been in prison for 37 years this month, for a crime his supporters say he did not commit. [AP]

"I think I can explain beyond serious doubt, that Leonard Peltier has committed no crime whatsoever," said former US Attourney General Ramsey Clark. "But that if he had been guilty of firing a gun that killed an FBI Agent, it was in defense of not just his people but the integrity of humanity from domination and exploitation."

A new effort is underway on the anniversary of Native American activist Leonard Peltier's conviction to urge President Barack Obama to grant clemency to a man Amnesty International considers to be a "political prisoner" in the United States.

This effort is spearheaded by the Leonard Peltier Defense Offense Committee and joined by his supporters worldwide.

"We no longer have to convince the world of his innocence," Peltier attourney John Privitera told Al Jazeera at a press conference in New York City this past December. "All anyone has to do is read the judicial history of his conviction and incarceration and it is clear that there was a miscarriage of justice."

The judicial history of the Peltier case is fraught with racism, false evidence, coerced testimonies, controversy, and perjury. It is a stain on the judicial system of the United States and has attracted support for Peltier's freedom by such notable figures as Nelson Mandela, Mother Teresa, and the Dalai Lama.

Reign of Terror

It was the mid 1970s on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota during a period which saw the highest per capita murder rate in the country. Most murders went unsolved. Few were ever investigated.

Tribal Council Chairman Richard "Dick" Wilson was elected in 1972. Wilson, viewed as a corrupt administrator who channelled tribal funds to himself while jobs went to his allies, cracked down on the "traditional" people of Pine Ridge, those who valued their indigenous culture, language, and beliefs over more Americanized, western based value systems.

An enthusiastic supporter of signing over native land rights to mining companies, Wilson organized a private militia called 'Guardians of the Oglala Nation' or 'GOONs' to intimidate his political opponents.

At the time, the American Indian Movement (AIM) had been a growing force across the United States standing up for Native American rights, including the upholding of treaties signed by the US Government with the Lakota Nation.

On February 27, 1973, protesting the injustice and conditions on the reservation and bringing attention to the broken treaties, some 200 members of the American Indian Movement and their Oglala Lakota supporters occupied the town of Wounded Knee on Pine Ridge, the site of the 1890 massacre by the US 7th Cavalry which killed at least three hundred unarmed Indians - mostly women and children.

The occupation of Wounded Knee was met by a massive show of force by the FBI, US Marshals, and Tribal Police. Military armoured personnel carriers rumbled down the reservation's roads, and the occupation ended after a 71 day standoff which saw two Indians, Frank Clearwater and Buddy LaMont, killed by gunfire.

What followed was a period on the reservation referred to by those who lived through it as the "reign of terror."

Dick Wilson's tribal government funded GOON squads began a campaign of violence against anyone thought to be an AIM supporter or traditional Oglala Lakota. Entire neighborhoods were shot up, houses were burned, and at least sixty members of AIM or their supporters on the reservation had been found murdered.

The traditional people on the reservation invited AIM to play a more active role in helping protect them from Wilson's gangs. Leonard Peltier was one of those who came to Pine Ridge to help safeguard the community from the violence which engulfed them.

to kill other Indian people," Oglala Tribal Vice President Tom Poor Bear told Al Jazeera.

Poor Bear, who has been in AIM since 1972, was in New York City recently speaking up in support of Peltier's release.

"During the reign of terror, a lot of us, like Leonard, set up camps to protect our elders, to protect our children, to protect our spiritual people," Poor Bear added. "The only thing Leonard is guilty of is carrying the responsibility of our ancestors."

It was in this atmosphere that on June 26, 1975, two under cover agents of the FBI drove onto the private property of the Jumping Bull residence where members of AIM had a nearby camp.

Soon after a shootout erupted, with women and children fleeing in the crossfire, FBI Special Agents Jack Coler and Ronald Williams were killed.

The camp was soon surrounded and came under a hail of gunfire while people continued to flee.

A third death, that of Native American Joe Stuntz, shot through the head by a sniper's bullet, has yet to be investigated.

After one of the largest manhunts in FBI history, Peltier, who was at the AIM camp on that day, was arrested in February 1976 in Canada and accused of killing the agents.

Dino Butler and Robert Robideau, arrested in the United States, were also charged with the killings. However, both of them were acquitted of these charges by a federal jury in Cedar Rapids,Iowa, on the grounds of self-defense.

The jury decided that had they been among what was reported to be up to thirty or so involved in the shoot out, and had they been the ones who fired on and killed the agents, due to the fear and violence in the community at that time, those acts would have been justified.

Nevertheless, the FBI was determined to hold someone accountable for the deaths of their agents and turned their focus to Peltier.

Peltier was extradited to the United States for trial based on an affidavit signed by a young Native American woman named Myrtle Poor Bear who stated that she was Peltier's girlfriend at the time and had been a witness to the killings.

Myrtle Poor Bear, known to have been mentally unstable, later recanted, admitting that she had never met Peltier but was threatened into making the incriminating statements by the FBI.

The court in Peltier's case barred her from testifying about FBI misconduct on the grounds of her "incompetence."

The court also prohibited Peltier from using "self-defense," as Butler and Robideau did successfully in Cedar Rapids, as his own defense.

Scare Tactics

During the Peltier trial, the airwaves were filled by media reports of imminent terrorist attacks and kidnappings that were supposedly to be carried out by AIM groups. Jury members were escorted to and from the court house by SWAT teams in busses with blacked out windows.

The fear this generated paid off for the prosecution. Despite failing to produce a single eyewitness to the killings, the prosecution prevailed and on April 19, 1977, the all white jury in Fargo, North Dakota, convicted Leonard Peltier, sentencing him to two consecutive life terms.

A Freedom of Information Act lawsuit years later turned up a ballistics report which revealed that the gun which the prosecution tied to Peltier during the trial did not produce the shell casings found at the scene. The report had been concealed during the trial.

Regardless, the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the ruling even though US prosecutor Lynn Crooks had admitted, "no one knows who fired the fatal shots" that killed the agents.

In fact, during the appeal, according to Peltier defense committee member Dorothy Ninham of the Oneida Nation, when confronted with the lack of evidence the court informed Peltier that he wasn't being held for the 'first degree murder' charge but for 'aiding and abetting'; a crime for which Peltier had not been extradited for, charged with, or convicted of.

The Spirit of Crazy Horse

The details of the Peltier case and the importance of its historical context were carefully presented in the best selling book, "In the Spirit of Crazy Horse, the Leonard Peltier Story" by Peter Matthiessen, as well as in Robert Redford's documentary, "Incident at Oglala".

This context could not be more clear to Ninham, who told to Al Jazeera, "This is not about one day on Pine Ridge and this is not about two FBI agents being murdered. This is about a whole lot more and goes back over a hundred years since we've been fighting with the government."

"They are holding Leonard for two people," Ninham, who posed numerous unanswered questions, added. "What about the 60 murders that happened on that reservation during the "reign of terror?" Who did any time for them? Who even accounted for those murders? Why wasn't a ballistics test done to see who killed Joe Stuntz? What about at Wounded Knee when they [government agents] shot into the church and killed Frank Clearwater?"

"It is just incredible the amount of injustice that has happened to him [Peltier] in his lifetime," Ninham adds. "I know Leonard. I know the kind of person he is. I've worked with him. I know that he is not capable of murder."

"We want people of all races to get involved with this", says Ninham. "We want to remind people that as long as Leonard is not free, none of us are free. I don't know how the United States can sit with this black eye and then talk about human rights in other countries when we are failing to take care of our own issues here."

From Turtle Mountain Indian Reservation in North Dakota, then put into an Indian boarding school as a child, Peltier, who is Anishinabe and Lakota, is thought of by most who know him as just a regular guy with a strong desire to help his people, whether it be defending treaty rights or fixing people's cars.

Peltier, the symbol, has grown since his conviction, and he is now regularly compared to great leaders like Crazy Hourse and Sitting Bull, two legendary Lakota leaders whose lives continue to inspire.

Representing an Idea

The idea Peltier now represents, according to his spiritual advisor Lenny Foster, is that of Indigenous Peoples' struggle and resistance around the world.

"He's locked up and in essence we are all locked up doing time with him", Foster told Al Jazeera.

"As long as he's treated like a political prisoner, we indigenous people are also treated this way. Not having our treaty rights and our sovereignty rights and our freedom of worship being recognised, I think Leonard is a symbol of all of that," added Foster. "For what he represents and what he symbolizes, they want to punish him."

A Dine/Navajo, Foster is a volunteer spiritual advisor for Native American inmates in state prisons and federal penitentiaries. He has been a strong advocate for traditional ceremonies for Native American prisoners, more than 2,000 of whom he has come in contact with while visiting 96 correctional facilities over 30 years in order to conduct sweat lodge ceremonies, pipe ceremonies, and cell side visits.

"I started visiting Leonard Peltier in the Leavenworth US Penitentiary, and eventually moved on to the US Penitentiary in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania," said Foster. "I know Leonard Peltier to be a Revered Elder, and he is a very reverent and spiritual person. He's not some gangster or some gang banger. That's what the federal bureau of prisons wants you to believe."

In seeming disregard for the American Indian Freedom of Religion Act signed by President Jimmy Carter in 1978, an Act which safeguarded the right of Native Americans in the US to practice their religion, even if incarcerated, Peltier has been denied visits from Foster since being transferred to Coleman Federal Correctional Complex, a maximum security prison in Coleman, Florida in 2011.

The reason?

Because Foster is a "friend" of Peltier.

"I raised the issue with the chaplain," said Foster. "That if I were a priest, minister, or rabbi, and had known an inmate for thirty years wouldn't I be somehow friends and have a relationship? But he wouldn't budge on it. The US prison system, when you think about it, is designed to break your spirit, to break your will, to break you down and make you give up. They've tried for thirty seven years to break Leonard's spirit and they haven't done it."

With the incarceration of Leonard Peltier, the US government's battle against him has not ended. As a prisoner in the US penal system, Peltier has endured beatings and solitary confinement.

He also has diabetes, high blood pressure, has suffered a stroke and, accoriding to his lawyers, been denied sufficient medical treatment.

Exemplar of Justice?

As the United States fashions itself as a global leader in human rights advancement, Leonard Peltier's freedom cannot be overlooked.

"I want you to realize there are millions of people throughout the world who are aware of Leonard's case of injustice", Attourney Peter Grant, who is Peltier's lawyer, told Al Jazeera. "They have to be reminded of this. Every diplomat, every world leader knows it is a ball and chain on the President's ability to speak about human rights. It affects his credibility."

Peltier has been Grant's client for decades now.

"We have to reignite the fact of the injustice done to Leonard", Grant added. "We have to keep not only local pressure on the President from people here in the United States, from people on this continent, from people throughout Indian country, we have to keep human rights pressure throughout the world on this president because he has no credibility on those issues until he breaks this ball and chain on his own ankle."

At the New York press conference, Privitera read an appeal to President Barack Obama.

"Mr President, we appeal directly to you. As a legal scholar, you know that article two, section two of our constitution is one of the strong threads in the fabric of our justice system. It is a responsibility born by the executive. It embraces the power to deliver justice, to exercise mercy, and to be wise in that law given power."

"This is an historic opportunity, Mr. President, to infuse your legacy with soulfulness and wisdom", he read. "We ask only that you commute the sentence of Leonard Peltier. No further findings have to be made. Commute him after thirty seven years of imprisonment. You have clemency power to say, and we ask that you do it now, that justice has been served by time, sir. And it's time to return Leonard home to his community to work and die on Turtle Mountain."

Having been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize multiple times himself while incarcerated, Peltier must hope Nobel Peace Prize winner Barack Obama is listening.

The relatively obscure news organization BrowardBulldog.com broke the news after acquiring FBI records that showed agents were suspicious of three people who had been living in Sarasota. Two of them were students at the Venice flight school attended by two of the hijackers.

When you are the law enforcement agency investigating the crime you just committed
you can almost always get away with the crime, destroy evidence and misdirect the investigation.
The Boston Marathon was a much needed re-branding of the FBI Crime family an a intermittent re-enforcement
of fear for the cowering American voter and taxpayer.

Exclusive: Family members of local FBI agent investigating Boston bombings speaks out


A local family is rejoicing this weekend after news broke late Friday that the second Boston bomber suspect was arrested.

Stark County's Ernie and Fran Aranyosi were on pins and needles Friday evening while their son, a Lake High School and Baldwin Wallace University graduate, went to work in Watertown, MA.

It was the most dangerous place in the United States that their son could have been at that very moment.

The Aranyosi's son, who will not be identified for security purposes, is a Special Agent in the FBI with extensive training in explosive devices.

FBI agent Ryan Seese sentenced to prison in two Peeping Tom cases in Hershey

A Dauphin County judge this morning sentenced former FBI agent Ryan Seese, 37, of Derry Township, to 1 to 23-1/2 months in county prison plus 3 years' probation for two Peeping Tom incidents at a middle school and a gym.

Seese had pleaded guilty in August to criminal trespass, invasion of privacy and disorderly conduct for sneaking into a girl's bathroom during a concert at Hershey Middle School and spying on two teens in May.

Seese left the FBI after being convicted of a Peeping Tom incident in a women's bathroom at the University of Arizona in 2007.

Everything I receive by e-mail is copied by the FBI.
So they know what I know.

If the law enforcement agency who committed the crime is investigating the crime it just committed
while monitoring all web activity presenting evidence that the law enforcement agency committed the crime
then they can become pro active and destroy the evidence in real time.
The are able to do this because your tax dollar funds the law enforcement agency to the tune of
$4 Billion dollars. Did I mention the funding received by the other government organizations involved?


Do not expect the members of Congress to do anything. They are chosen for us through voter
fraud and the few who are independent get blackmailed.

None of the following proves that what actually happened at the Boston
Marathon was different from what the FBI says happened. But the fact that
terrorist events make the public more obedient to the rulers (as indicated
by the understandable willingness of everybody in Boston and surrounding
towns to remain indoors when instructed to do so by the authorities, in the
name of public safety) constitutes a cui bono (to whose benefit?) reason for
at least being skeptical of the FBI's account of things. Specific reasons
for sketicism are recounted here, and I will add postcripts if and when more
become apparent.

FBI. Two things are notable about this press conference:

1. The FBI spokesman says emphatically that no other images than the ones
displayed by him in this press conference should be used by anybody, because
it would only confuse things.

2. The video shows the two suspects at the scene (presumably) of the
explosions wearing black backpacks [the authorities had previously reported
that evidence from bomb residue indicated the bomb had been inside a black
bag of some kind] that supposedly contain bombs, but--and this is extremely
strange--there are no images of the suspects subsequently NOT wearing these
same backpacks. In other words there is no evidence that these suspects
placed their backpacks on the ground and then walked away. For all one can
tell from these images, the two suspects merely were at the location of the
bombing wearing backpacks, much as many other people. We are given no reason
for singling out these two particular individuals from the others in the
area wearing black backpacks. Why not?

It is not as if no other people in the area were wearing black backpacks.

backpack and subsequently without it, and his backpack has markings found in
the remnants of the bomb explosion. It shows the man suspiciously looking in
a different direction from everybody else in the crowd around him.
Furthermore he is wearing the same outfit (black top, tan pants) that Navy
SEALs wear. How come the FBI doesn't want people to look at this video, with
actual evidence that its subject may have been a bomber, and wants us to
look only at images that do not constitute evidence the subject may have
been the bomber?

Did the FBI single out the two Chechen men as the suspects for a very
different reason than the one they told the public? They told the public
they singled out these men based only on the video images. The public was
led to believe that the FBI had no knowledge at this time of who the men
were, not even what their names were. We were led to believe that there was
no prior connection between the FBI and these completely unknown (to the
FBI) individuals.

Standing before the podium with his reading glasses perched on his nose in a Really Serious Position, former FBI Director Louis Freeh read the summary of his damning report on what happened at Penn State University. The university, he intoned, was directly responsible for permitting Jerry Sandusky, the former football team defensive coordinator and now a convicted child molester, for preying on young "troubled" boys.

So far, the media response has been lockstep not only in its condemnation for Penn State and the late Joe Paterno, the legendary coach who won more games than any other NCAA Division I football coach in history, but also in its praise for Freeh. (I include links from the New York Times, ESPN, and CBS Sports.)

Not being familiar with the details of the report or the Sandusky case and the role of Penn State officials in trying to hide what they feared was happening, I will ask readers to judge the accuracy and tone of Freeh’s report and make their own assessments. However, before the media and legal world goes on to paint Louis Freeh in the most heroic terms, I would remind readers that probably any one of us could have written that report and made the same damning comments made by Freeh and his underlings. It hardly is heroic to come upon a situation after the fact and to write those things which apparently were obvious in hindsight.

No, I am writing in order to let readers know that this "heroic" Louis Freeh has some serious baggage of his own, baggage that includes covering up murders, whitewashing the most hideous domestic massacre since Wounded Knee, publicly making wrongful accusations, and further turning the Federal Bureau of Investigation into an entity that James Bovard accurately has called, "A Stasi for America." Louis Freeh does not deserve our praise; indeed, he does not even deserve our scorn. Instead, he deserves to be sitting in a cell at the federal Supermax Prison in Colorado, as the crimes he committed during his years at the FBI pale in comparison to anything done by Paterno, whose legacy Freeh has destroyed, or even Sandusky ever did.

If the charges for which Sandusky was convicted are true, then the man truly was a monster and needed to be caught. His victims will be scarred for life – but they will be alive and can seek healing. However, one of the victims of Louis Freeh, Katherine Andrade, cannot seek healing because she was incinerated at Waco in 1993 as a result of the direction actions by the man who now stands in judgment of Joe Paterno.

The backstory here is taxpayer funded FBI agents relied on crime families in every American
City to carry out assassinations for them. It is called Plausible Denial. If someone else commits the murder
for the law enforcement agency investigating the crime they just committed they can misdirect the investigation
or destroy the evidence.

Spying on Americans: The FBI's "Quantico Circuit" -- Still Spying, Still Lying

Within days of the bombings in Boston, massive contradictions have opened up in the official accounts given by the Obama administration, the FBI and other state agencies as to how this terrorist attack transpired.

As in so many previous cases, once again in the Boston bombings the individual said to be the principal organizer of an act of terrorism was well known to the FBI. In 2011, the agency had been tipped off by Russian intelligence that Tamerlan Tsarnaev, who died last week following a shootout with police, was suspected of being a radical Islamist seeking to link up with armed groups in the Northern Caucasus.

The FBI now claims that it investigated Tsarnaev, a resident alien and Russian citizen, but found no incriminating evidence, learning nothing more about him until after the April 15 bombings.

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano testified on Capitol Hill Tuesday that when Tsarnaev left the US for a six-month trip to the Caucasus in January 2012, his trip “pinged” the Department of Homeland Security system, but that when he returned no one took notice because the investigation into his activities had lapsed.

There are many possible explanations for how someone placed under an FBI investigation as a suspected Islamist militant could carry out a bombing in the heart of a US city, killing three people and wounding over 170 more. The one that is least plausible, and can be rejected as a lie and cover-up, is the FBI’s claim that the suspect simply fell under its radar.

The mother of the two brothers has directly contradicted the FBI’s story, reporting that Tamerlan was in continuous contact with the agency for between three to five years and that they were “controlling his every step.”

Russian police sources have contradicted the FBI claim that it received no information from Moscow, reporting that they provided the US agency with a dossier on Tamerlan.

Amid the self-congratulatory praise for the police agencies that placed Boston under a state of siege last Friday before capturing Tsarnaev’s 19-year-old brother, Dzhokhar, there has been a growing drumbeat of criticism of an “intelligence failure” by the FBI. The US Senate and House intelligence committees held closed-door hearings Tuesday on the FBI’s handling of its 2011 investigation into the activities of Tsarnaev.

There is no reason to expect anything but a cover-up from these hearings. One only need consider the fact that the FBI’s director is Robert Mueller, who held the same post on September 11, 2001. Ostensibly the greatest intelligence failure in the history of the United States, neither 9/11 nor the hearings that followed it resulted in Mueller or any other senior US intelligence, military or other government official losing his post for “failing to connect the dots.”

A number of those involved in the 9/11 attacks had been under surveillance either by the FBI or the CIA. The CIA was well aware that two of the hijackers had entered the US, but deliberately concealed the information from other agencies. Elements within the FBI had demanded an investigation into suspicious activities of Saudi and other Arab nationals training at flight schools in the US, but to no avail.

None of those who carried out the official investigations of 9/11 had any interest in probing too deeply into these connections for fear of what they would reveal.

Virtually every terror case in the US since 9/11 has had the FBI’s fingerprints all over it, and the Boston bombings are no exception. The federal police agency has engaged in unending sting operations, using highly paid informants to troll through mosques and immigrant communities, ensnaring hapless people in plots that would never have existed without the FBI providing the inspiration as well as the means.

In the case of Tamerlan Tsarnaev, they were handed an ideal candidate for such a sting—it is now reported that he had been thrown out of his mosque for making militant statements. Yet they supposedly dropped the case for lack of evidence. This claim lacks any credibility.

After the bombings, the FBI’s release of the photographs of the Tsarnaev brothers, appealing to the public for “tips,” amounted to a calculated cover-up. The FBI is not the Keystone Cops. If they didn’t have prior knowledge of the Tsarnaevs’ plans, they knew precisely who these individuals were the moment they saw them on the videos.

Now there is a palpable air of nervousness in government circles. Before a real investigation has even begun, the story is being put out that the two brothers acted alone without any outside assistance. Within the Obama administration, there appears to be a concerted effort to contain any damage from new revelations.

There are any number of explanations for what happened after the FBI received the request from Moscow. One is that Tamerlan Tsarnaev was given a pass because he was seen as an asset in gathering intelligence on Islamist groups or furthering the murky US operations in support of separatism in southern Russia. Some sources have suggested that he may have turned on his American handlers, as has happened not infrequently—the killing of five top CIA operatives in Afghanistan by a Jordanian doctor sent to infiltrate Al Qaeda comes to mind.

One thing is certain; terrorism is invariably bound up with the criminal foreign policy conducted by Washington, which takes the form of an endless succession of reckless, predatory and violent interventions all over the world.

The September 11 attacks themselves had their roots in the decision of the Carter administration at the end of the 1970s to foment an Islamist insurgency in Afghanistan to overthrow a Soviet-backed government, and Washington’s subsequent discarding of the mujahideen, whom it had previously hailed as “freedom fighters.”

History is repeating itself in the intricate and long-standing relationship between US imperialism and Al Qaeda. In both Libya and Syria, Washington has utilized Al Qaeda-linked forces as proxies in wars for regime-change against secular Arab governments.

In Libya, once Gaddafi was overthrown and murdered, the US sought to suppress these forces, resulting in the bloody assault on the US consulate in Benghazi that claimed the life of the US ambassador and three other Americans last September 11. In Syria, it is preparing to do the same thing, working to cobble together a coalition of “moderates” to marginalize the al Nusra Islamists, who until now have borne the brunt of the fighting. All of this is sowing the seeds for more terrorism.

Innocent bystanders, whether in Damascus, Kabul, Baghdad or Boston, end up paying the terrible price for these US operations, which leave a trail of blood and disaster everywhere.

A federal judge in Salt Lake City has granted a former FBI “spy hunter” from Sleepy Hollow a chance to argue his way out of a Utah federal prison while he awaits trial on conspiracy charges.

U.S. District Judge Tena Campbell this week scheduled a pretrial hearing for May 3 for Robert Lustyik Jr., a retired agent who was ordered held by another Utah judge March 19 after, officials said, he violated the terms of his bail by meeting with witnesses in the case.

Lustyik, 50, was indicted late last year along with childhood friend Johannes Thaler, a former Tarrytown resident. Federal prosecutors charged that the two conspired to derail an earlier and separate federal investigation of controversial defense contractor Michael Taylor, who was accused of defrauding the government out of a $54 million defense contract in Afghanistan.

Prosecutors say Taylor promised Lustyik $200,000 as well as a share of several lucrative contracts he was anticipating: a $100 million deal for security and surveillance equipment and services in the United Arab Emirates; a $50 million contract for power generation in Iraq; and a contract to provide security at a 10 million-barrel oilfield in South Sudan.

Defense attorneys have argued that Lustyik was merely trying to secure Taylor as a government witness when federal investigators on Taylor’s fraud probe inadvertently stumbled onto his efforts. They also said Thaler is a lady’s shoes salesman at Macy’s, not an international conspirator.

But last month, prosecutors moved to have Lustyik held, claiming that he never secured his $2 million bail and gave a potential witness $26,000.

Judge rejects FBI's request to use 'extremely intrusive' hack tactic

A federal judge in Texas has denied a Federal Bureau of Investigation request to move forward with an investigation tactic that would have tracked alleged hackers by turning a suspect’s computer into a surveillance agent.

In a 13-page explanation Houston magistrate Judge Stephen Smith eviscerated the FBI’s attempt to push an “extremely intrusive” tactic to track down someone who allegedly used his or her computer to commit federal bank fraud and identity theft.

Smith’s order denied the use of a so-called Trojan Horse tool investigators would have installed on a computer to override its operating system and use a webcam to take pictures of the suspect. The request also asked for permission to access the computer’s email contents, chat message logs, documents, pictures and passwords as well as Internet activity, according to Smith’s memorandum.

Known as a remote administration tool (RAT), hackers have previously used the method proposed by the FBI to spy on women through their computers and share stolen erotic pictures with hackers.

Judge Smith wrote that the FBI hoped to “surreptitiously install data extraction software on the Target Computer. Once installed, the software has the capacity to search the computer’s hard drive, random access memory, and other storage media; to activate the computer’s built-in camera; to generate latitude and longitude coordinates for the computer’s location; and to transmit the extracted data to FBI agents within the district.”

He decried law enforcement’s overly broad intentions, which, if granted, could have set a dangerous precedent for other judges approached with similar requests in the future.

Russia’s warned both the FBI and CIA about Tamerlan Tsarnaev, not once but twice, with the same message, he was “a follower of radical Islam” who “changed drastically since 2010”. Now, the aftermath of the Boston bombings is what the US is left with, while Capitol Hill is having hot debates on how this happened right in their own backyard.

Although FBI officials claimed to have looked into Tsarnaev’s past activities on, they came up without a clue. This was in response to the info Russian officials had shared with them.

Congress and ex-government officials are calling Tsarnaev’s 6 month trip to Dagestan a year ago, a missed opportunity to refocus attention on him and potentially prevent the attack. Not everyone is in agreement on this topic, some saying the FBI was reasonable in their search.

“If there was a failure at any time, maybe it was at that point, to get a follow-up interview,” said Representative Mike Rogers, Republican of Michigan and chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, a former F.B.I. agent. “But even so, it’s hard to say they did something wrong.
Travel in and of itself is not derogatory information, and that area is far down on our priority list.”

An ex counterterrorism official, now a teacher at Notre Dame Law School, Jimmy Gurule had a more stricter approach when it came to what should have happened. “When he came back to the United States, they should have pulled him out of the Customs line, inspected his belongings, looked at his laptop and cellphone and questioned him about what he had done in Dagestan,” said Mr. Gurulé.

US security personnel though thinks that reopening the case just because of travel, would be impractical, as the database they use has 700 thousand names, receiving up to 30 alerts daily.

Although many senators from each party hoped that there would have been more done in the past, the majority of them seemed to think the FBI did all they could.

The Russian apartment bombings were a series of explosions that hit four apartment blocks in the Russian cities of Buynaksk, Moscow, and Volgodonsk in September 1999, killing 293 people and injuring 651. The explosions occurred in Buynaksk on 4 September, Moscow on 9 and 13 September, and Volgodonsk on 16 September. Several other bombs were defused in Moscow at the time.[1]

A similar bomb was found and defused in the Russian city of Ryazan on 22 September 1999. Two days later Federal Security Service Director Nikolai Patrushev announced that the Ryazan incident had been a training exercise.[2] This has led to the support of theories by Alexander Litvinenko (later murdered by an unusual radioactive isotope) and Anna Politkovskaya that the apartment bombings were carried out by the Russian secret service FSB (formerly KGB).

Together with the Invasion of Dagestan launched from Chechnya in August 1999 by Islamist militia led by Shamil Basayev and Ibn al-Khattab, the bombings caused the Russian Federation to launch the Second Chechen War.

Although on 2 September 1999, the militia commander Ibn Al-Khattab announced that "The mujahideen of Dagestan are going to carry out reprisals in various places across Russia,"[3] on 14 September he denied responsibility for the blasts, adding that he was fighting the Russian army, not women and children.[4]

An official investigation of the bombings was completed by the Russian Federal Security Service in 2002. According to the investigation and the court ruling that followed, the bombings were organized by Achemez Gochiyaev, who remained at large as of 2010, and ordered by Ibn Al-Khattab and Abu Omar al-Saif, who were later killed. Six other suspects have been convicted by Russian courts.

State Duma member Yuri Shchekochikhin filed two motions for a parliamentary investigation of the events, but the motions were rejected by the Duma in March 2000. An independent[5] public commission to investigate the bombings was chaired by Duma deputy Sergei Kovalev. The commission was rendered ineffective because of government refusal to respond to its inquiries.[6][7] The Commission's lawyer Mikhail Trepashkin was arrested for exposing classified information.[8]

Yury Felshtinsky, Alexander Litvinenko, Boris Berezovsky (oligarch in British exile), David Satter, Boris Kagarlitsky, Vladimir Pribylovsky, and the secessionist Chechen authorities claimed that the 1999 bombings were a false flag attack coordinated by the FSB in order to win public support for a new full-scale war in Chechnya, which boosted Prime Minister and former FSB Director Vladimir Putin's popularity, and brought the pro-war Unity Party to the State Duma and Putin to the presidency within a few months although there was little concrete evidence for these claims.[9][10][11][12][13][14][15][16][17][18][19][20]

Gordon Bennett from Conflict Studies Research Centre, Robert Bruce Ware, Paul J. Murphy, Henry Plater-Zyberk, Simon Saradzhyan, Nabi Abdullaev and Richard Sakwa criticized the conspiracy theory, pointing out problems such as the lack of evidence.[21][22][23][24][25]

As with many “terrorism” related events since 9/11, the Boston bombing official narrative proves to be a web of lies as important facts are revealed. It turns out that the FBI has lied about its knowledge of the alleged suspects, Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, already being presented as guilty not only in the mainstream press but by the President himself.

According to the suspects’ mother, the FBI had been following them for years:

The FBI originally feigned ignorance over the identity of the two Boston bombing suspects, Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, as they appealed to an unwitting public to help them “identify” and “find” the suspects. […]

Russia Today, in an article titled, “‘They were set up, FBI followed them for years’- Tsarnaevs’ mother to RT,” stated of the suspects’ mother:

But her biggest suspicion surrounding the case was the constant FBI surveillance she said her family was subjected to over the years. She is surprised that having been so stringent with the entire family, the FBI had no idea the sons were supposedly planning a terrorist act.

She would say of the FBI to Russia Today:

They used to come [to our] home, they used to talk to me…they were telling me that he [the older, 26-y/o Tamerlan] was really an extremist leader and that they were afraid of him. They told me whatever information he is getting, he gets from these extremist sites… they were controlling him, they were controlling his every step…and now they say that this is a terrorist act! Never ever is this true, my sons are innocent!

We were also told that Tamerlan Tsarnaev was killed in an exchange of gunfire after he and his brother had robbed a 7-Eleven:

When the shootout ended, one of the suspects, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, a former boxer, had been shot and fatally wounded. He was wearing explosives, several law enforcement officials said. With a bomb strapped to his chest, one of the Boston Marathon suspects was killed early Friday after he and his accomplice brother robbed a 7-Eleven, shot a police officer to death, carjacked an SUV and hurled explosives in an extraordinary firefight with law enforcement, authorities told NBC News. The events surrounding Tamerlan’s death reported by the media are simply not true. It turns out that Tamerlan’ aunt identified him as a “naked, cuffed, clearly alive and well detainee seen in video aired by CNN”:

Was Tamerlan Assassinated?

The Boston Globe confirmed that Marathon Bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev was in custody, contradicting earlier reports that he had been killed in crossfire. If he was in custody and is now dead, does that not suggest that he might have been the object of an extrajudicial assassination? The circumstances of his death remain to be clarified.

Moreover, the 7-Eleven robbery was actually unrelated to the Tsarnaev brothers:

There was a 7-Eleven robbery in Cambridge last night, but it had nothing to do with the Boston Marathon bombing suspects.

Margaret Chabris, the director of corporate communication at 7- Eleven, says the surveillance video of the crime was not taken at a 7-Eleven and that the suspect that did rob the 7-Eleven does not look like Tamerlan or Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.

“The suspect in the photos for that particular 7-Eleven robbery looks nothing like the suspects,” Chabris says. “The police or someone made a mistake. Someone was confused.”

[…] Again, they might be guilty. But as Glenn Greenwald notes:

The overarching principle here should be that Dzhokhar Tsarnaev is entitled to a presumption of innocence until he is actually proven guilty. As so many cases have proven – from accused (but exonerated) anthrax attacker Stephen Hatfill to accused (but exonerated) Atlanta Olympic bomber Richard Jewell to dozens if not hundreds of Guantanamo detainees accused of being the “worst of the worst” but who were guilty of nothing – people who appear to be guilty based on government accusations and trials-by-media are often completely innocent. On April 19 Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was arrested and brought to a hospital. According to Reuters, “Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was wounded during at least one of two gun battles with police on Friday, suffering gunshot wounds to his head, neck, legs and hand [...]“. On April 24, the Huffington Post reported:

Two U.S. officials say the surviving suspect in the Boston bombings was unarmed when police captured him hiding inside a boat in a neighborhood back yard.

Authorities originally said they had exchanged gunfire with Dzhokhar Tsarnaev for more than one hour Friday evening before they were able to subdue him. We still don’t know what really happened in Boston and who committed the attacks even though the mainstream media report that Dzhokhar Tsarnaev has admitted being guilty. What we know for sure is that the official Boston bombing narrative is filled with lies and that since 9/11 and in the context of the fictitious “War on Terror”, Western governments, intelligence agencies and mainstream media have proven to be untrustworthy sources of information on alleged “terrorist attacks” or “foiled terrorist plots”.

Canada’s Complicity in the War on Terror

Three days after Boston was locked down, invaded by a colossal police-military apparatus on a surreal “teenagehunt”, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police made a very timely announcement: they had foiled a terrorist plot targeting a Via Rail passenger train. Or so they say.

In a very absurd press conference where three RCMP officers repeatedly answered questions with “we cannot comment as the investigation is ongoing”, the only information they seemed very eager to disclose was that the suspects “received guidance from Al-Qaeda in Iran”.

While the Canadian mainstream media take these RCMP allegations at face value, independent news outlets suspect hidden political motives behind the highly publicized announcement:

Neither the police nor government have given any reason as to why, after allowing the accused to remain at large for months, they were suddenly arrested Monday afternoon and in a very high-profile manner. […]

Speaking Tuesday after Jaser’s arraignment in a Toronto court, his lawyer, John Norris, drew attention to the timing of the police-government announcement that they had uncovered Canada’s first “al-Qaeda-sponsored” terror plot. Said Norris, “The timing of the arrest is a bit of a mystery and certainly I would like to hear the RCMP’s explanation for that. They have been very clear that there is no risk of public safety and it is surprising to say the least that this arrest would be made now, close on the heels of what happened in Boston and timed perfectly with what was happening in the House of Commons yesterday.”

On Friday, the Conservative government announced that it was changing the House of Commons’ agenda, scheduling third and final reading of its “Combating Terrorism Act” (Bill S-7) to begin Monday and conclude this week. Bill S-7 gives the state vast new powers. These include: the right to hold terrorism suspects for 72 hours without charge, to convene “investigative hearings” at which those believed to have information about an imminent terrorist attack are stripped of their right to remain silent, and the power to place restrictions for up to a year on the movements and rights of persons deemed by the state to be terrorist suspects but against whom they have insufficient evidence to lay charges. […]

US authorities have been quick to trumpet the Canadian claims of a thwarted terrorist attack—claims that boost their own efforts to portray North America as under siege from terrorists and justify a vast expansion of the national-security apparatus and coercive powers of the state. The US ambassador to Canada, David Jacobson, issued a statement Monday saying the arrests of Esseghaier and Jaser “were the result of extensive cross-border cooperation” and had underscored “that we face serious and real threats.” […]

At Monday’s press conference, the RCMP asserted that Esseghaier and Jaser had acted under the “direction and guidance” of “al-Qaeda elements located in Iran.”

The RCMP said that they had no evidence of Iranian government involvement. […]

The Harper Conservative government, which has declared itself Israel’s strongest ally and has expanded Canada’s decades’ old military-strategic alliance with Washington, broke off diplomatic relations with Teheran last summer. In justifying this action, Conservative Foreign Minister John Baird labeled Iran “the most significant threat to global peace and security in the world today.” (Keith Jones Canadian Government unveils “Terror Plot” as it Adopts Draconian New Law, World Socialist Web Site, April 24, 2013.)

We may recall a “terrorist plot” revealed in late November 2001. According to mainstream reports, Ahmed Ressam, who was convicted of plotting to bomb Los Angeles International Airport in 1999, had also planned to bomb a Montreal area with “the most visible concentration of Jews in Canada — a vibrant area of some 5,000 ultra-Orthodox Jews who stand out because of their traditional outfits of black coats and hats for men, long skirts and wigs for women. » (Ingrid Peritz, Montreal’s brush with terror, The Globe and Mail, November 30, 2001.)

The Globe stated further:

Members of the Hasidic community in Outremont responded with shock after hearing that Mr. Ressam and Samir Ait Mohamed wanted to detonate a bomb in the area because it was predominantly Jewish.

The stated choice of explosives — a bomb on a gasoline truck — evoked the detonating power of the fuel-laden planes that ripped through the World Trade Center. (Ibid.)

Samir Aït Mohamed happened to be a fake Algerian refugee and “an informant for Canadian law-enforcement authorities [RCMP].” (Mike Carter, Montreal bomb plot revealed in Ressam case documents, Seattle Times, November 30, 2001.)

The Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) was also involved in a terrorist plot. Joseph Gilles Breault, a.k.a. Youssef Mouammar or Abou Djihad, had threatened to attack the Montreal metro with a biochemical weapon in 1998. He was a CSIS agent.

With that in mind, the latest RCMP “exploit” raises even more questions on this revived Al-Qaeda threat focused on Iran. Who’s behind Al-Qaeda in Iran?:

As the FBI reels from what now appears to be revelations it was directly involved in the Boston Marathon bombings, a deluge of FBI “success” stories have been “serendipitously” splashed across Western headlines. Among them was an allegedly “foiled” terror attack in Canada, reported to be the work of terrorists supported by “Al-Qaeda operatives in Iran.” The Globe and Mail, in its report, “Canada joins U.S. in alleging al-Qaeda has operatives based in Iran,” states:

[…] The Sunni-based al-Qaeda and Shia Iran belong to different branches of Islam that have been at odds historically. But in recent years U.S. officials have formally alleged that Iran has allowed al-Qaeda members to operate out of its territory.”

[…] Hersh in his 2008 New Yorker piece titled, “Preparing the Battlefield: The Bush Administration steps up its secret moves against Iran,” spelled out a damning indictment of US involvement in bolstering, arming, and funding terror organizations, not linked to, but described as actually being Al Qaeda [...]:

One of the most active and violent anti-regime groups in Iran today is the Jundallah, also known as the Iranian People’s Resistance Movement, which describes itself as a resistance force fighting for the rights of Sunnis in Iran. “This is a vicious Salafi organization whose followers attended the same madrassas as the Taliban and Pakistani extremists,” Nasr told me. “They are suspected of having links to Al Qaeda and they are also thought to be tied to the drug culture.” The Jundallah took responsibility for the bombing of a busload of Revolutionary Guard soldiers in February, 2007. At least eleven Guard members were killed. According to Baer and to press reports, the Jundallah is among the groups in Iran that are benefiting from U.S. support. Otherwise the brothers’ links to Chechen terrorists makes very little sense, since the latter, like many other terrorist groups and/or so-called freedom fighters depending on the strategy of the day, have been supported by the US:

What is abundantly clear is that the US government is not committed to fighting terrorists.

Quite the opposite. US intelligence has been recruiting and grooming terrorists for more than thirty years, while at same time upholding the absurd notion that these terrorists, who are bona fide CIA “intelligence assets”, constitute a threat to the American Homeland. These alleged threats by “An Outside Enemy” are part of a propaganda ploy behind the “Global War on Terrorism” (GWOT).

[...] The development of an Islamist terrorist militia in different countries around the World is part of an intricate US intelligence project.

While the Tsarnaev brothers are casually accused without evidence of having links to Chechen terrorists, the important question is who is behind the Chechen terrorists?

In an utterly twisted logic, the protagonists of the ‘Global War on Terrorism” directed against Muslims are the de facto architects of “Islamic terrorism.” (Michel Chossudovsky, BOSTON TRUTH: The “Chechen Connection”, Al Qaeda and the Boston Marathon Bombings, Global Research, April 22, 2013.)

Even former US Ambassador Craig Murray says the “Chechen Connexion” story is surreal:

We are asked to believe that Tamerlan Tsarnaev was identified by the Russian government as an extremist Dagestani or Chechen Islamist terrorist, and they were so concerned about it that in late 2010 they asked the US government to take action. At that time, the US and Russia did not normally have a security cooperation relationship over the Caucasus, particularly following the Russian invasion of Georgia in 2008. For the Russians to ask the Americans for assistance, Tsarnaev must have been high on their list of worries.

In early 2011 the FBI interview Tsarnaev and trawl his papers and computers but apparently – remarkably for somebody allegedly radicalised by internet – the habitually paranoid FBI find nothing of concern.

So far, so weird. But now this gets utterly incredible. In 2012 Tamerlan Tsarnaev, who is of such concern to Russian security, is able to fly to Russia and pass through the airport security checks of the world’s most thoroughly and brutally efficient security services without being picked up.

He is then able to proceed to Dagestan – right at the heart of the world’s heaviest military occupation and the world’s most far reaching secret police surveillance – again without being intercepted, and he is able there to go through some form of terror training or further Islamist indoctrination. He then flies out again without any intervention by the Russian security services.

That is the official story and I have no doubt it did not happen. I know Russia and I know the Russian security services. Whatever else they may be, they are extremely well-equipped, experienced and efficient and embedded into a social fabric accustomed to cooperation with their mastery.

The idea that Tamerlan was, in fact, a US intelligence asset seems closer to the truth, since according to a Russian newspaper, he attended a US-sponsored workshop in the Caucasus, the goal of which was to destabilize southern regions of Russia:

Today, Russian newspaper Izvestia alleges that the older Boston Tamarlan bombing brother attended a workshop – sponsored by an American organization – on destabilizing the Russian satellite states:

At the disposal of “Izvestia” has documents Counterintelligence Department Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia, confirming that the Georgian organization “Fund of Caucasus” [here's their website], which cooperates with the U.S. non-profit organization “Jamestown” (the board of directors of NGOs previously entered one of the ideologists of U.S. foreign policy, Zbigniew Brzezinski), was engaged in recruiting residents North Caucasus to work in the interests of the United States and Georgia.

According to the reports of Colonel Chief Directorate Counterintelligence Department Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia Gregory Chanturia to the Minister of Internal Affairs Irakli Garibashvili, “Caucasian fund” in cooperation with the Foundation “Jamestown” in the summer of 2012 conducted workshops and seminars for young people of the Caucasus, including its Russian part. Some of them attended Tsarnaev Tamerlane, who was in Russia from January to July 2012.

“Caucasian fund” writes Tchanturia was established November 7, 2008, just after the Georgian-Ossetian conflict, “to control the processes taking place in the North Caucasus region.” Accordingly, the Department of the Interior Ministry counterintelligence case was brought intelligence operations called “DTV”. Main purpose is to recruit young people and intellectuals of the North Caucasus to enhance instability and extremism in the southern regions of Russia. Overall, the Boston tragedy is clearly and sadly being exploited to revamp the “War on terror”, justify the police state apparatus in the US and other Western countries such as Canada, and legitimize attacks on our rights and liberties.

Doctors Who Torture

Last July at the Libertad (Freedom) prison in Uruguay was unusual. Miguel Angel Estrella, an Argentine pianist (and now Argentina’s Ambassador to UNESCO), was giving a concert in the same prison where he had been imprisoned and tortured 32 years earlier.

He dedicated the concert to the 50 inmates currently imprisoned. After he was liberated, Estrella had testified against Dolcey Britos, a psychologist who had masterminded the psychological torture of prisoners at Libertad.

Estrella was liberated thanks to an unprecedented international campaign on his behalf. A friend since my youth, he told me in New York about the ordeal he went through while he was a prisoner in Uruguay. A professional pianist, he was subjected to a most unusual and frightening punishment. He was beaten repeatedly on his hands and threatened with amputation, a spiritual death for a pianist.

He told me: “They [the torturers] concentrated on my hands like sadists. They applied electricity under my nails, without stopping and later they hung me from my arms. After two days of torture I hurt all over, and didn’t have any sensation left in my hands. I touched things and didn’t feel anything.

“The last time I was tortured they threatened to cut off my hands with an electric saw, saying, ‘We are going to chop off your hands, finger by finger, and then we are going to kill you, as the Chileans killed Víctor Jara [a famous Chilean folk singer and guitar player who was killed after being tortured, his hands repeatedly smashed before his death]‘.”

The goal of Estrella’s torture was to break him psychologically, to destroy his self-esteem and his hope. Such a carefully orchestrated torture raises the question of how health professionals — including psychologists and psychiatrists — could have participated in it.

When questioned by Dr. Maxwell Gregg Bloche, an American physician and lawyer who investigated the role of Uruguayan military physicians for the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Britos claimed that his role was only that of “diagnostic consultant” to the psychiatrist in the prison.

Estrella, despite all his suffering, was lucky. He survived and is now an internationally known pianist, humanitarian and Argentina’s Ambassador to UNESCO. This is not the case for thousands who are still tortured while in prison, in some cases with the collusion of medical personnel.

It is now known that both German and Japanese doctors killed thousands of people under the excuse that they were conducting medical research. The Nuremberg tribunal of war crimes brought to trial 23 German defendants, some of them physicians, who were accused of crimes involving experimentation on human subjects.

Aside from using human beings to conduct experiments, there are several ways in which medical personnel participate in torture. They range from assessing the prisoner’s health status before initiating torture to determining how much longer it is possible to continue with torture without endangering the prisoners’ survival.

It also involves reviving prisoners who have been made unconscious by pain and punishment, and actively participating in the interrogation process. That professionals who are trained to do everything in their power to alleviate suffering would instead contribute to carrying out torture is one of the most tragic perversions of the medical mandate.

It is a fundamental problem in medical ethics. In the case of physicians, their participation in torture is one of most blatant violations of basic tenets established some 2,500 years ago by Hippocrates.

What is the psychology behind doctors’ participation in torture?

Richard Goldstein and Patrick Breslin offered one explanation: “Most physicians involved in torture seem to be caught up in vast government machines and descend gradually into the torture chamber, propelled by a combination of fear, weakness and self-delusion that is all too depressingly human.”

Norberto Liwsky, an Argentine physician who had been abducted by the Argentine military and who was tortured with the complicity of a medical colleague named Héctor Jorge Vidal, told me, “No one participates in torture without first going through a process of justifying unethical values, even before he enters the torture chamber.”

Whatever the explanation, however, it doesn’t diminish its terrible consequences or the horror of the act itself. Medical associations worldwide need to be more vocal in their condemnation if this sad phenomenon has the possibility of being eliminated.

A former FBI agent who was the scourge of corrupt sheriffs and drug kingpins across East Tennessee for more than a decade was indicted Wednesday for allegedly having an affair with a Korean brothel manager in Myrtle Beach, S.C., and concealing the relationship from his superiors.

Clyde William Merryman, 60, was issued a summons to appear in court May 5 after a federal grand jury in Florence, S.C., returned a seven-count indictment charging him with obstruction of justice, mail fraud, concealing a material fact, and falsifying records, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office in Charlotte, N.C., which is prosecuting the case.





Merryman, a 32-year FBI veteran who retired from the agency in 2003 to become public safety director in Surfside Beach, S.C., could face decades in federal prison if convicted of all the charges lodged against him.

He currently serves as town manager of Surfside Beach and was placed on administrative leave with pay Thursday by the Town Council, said his executive assistant, Jan Lewis.

Merryman, who worked extensively in East Tennessee in the 1980s and 1990s, was best-known for his work in the MACH-TENN corruption probe that led to the arrests of scores of people, including nearly a dozen county sheriffs, on drug and gambling charges.

In 1994, Merryman got into hot water with his superiors after he admitted to having a brief affair with the live-in girlfriend of a Blount County drug kingpin during an investigation. The FBI suspended Merryman without pay for two weeks and gave him a letter of censure but never publicly acknowledged the incident.

According to the indictment returned Wednesday, Merryman transferred to the FBI's office in Myrtle Beach, S.C., in 1999 and launched an investigation into Asian brothels in early 2002. At some point, he became sexually involved with one of the spa network's "top managers," an illegal Korean immigrant named Hye Yung Kang, the indictment alleges.

In September 2002, Merryman had Kang classified as a confidential witness for the FBI, which meant that the federal government paid some of her expenses. Merryman also allegedly provided her with a letter that allowed her "to travel at will, via airline, without any identification," records show.

Kang allegedly made several trips to New York City, and after one of those trips she returned to Myrtle Beach with more than $20,000 she had earned from the spa business, court records state. Merryman also allegedly tried to influence immigration officials to give Kang a "worker identification card," which she would need to obtain a Social Security account number.

After he retired from the FBI, Merryman "attempted to use his status as a former FBI agent and his current position" in Surfside Beach to "shield Kang from prosecution and circumvent the immigrations laws of the United States," according to the indictment.

Merryman and another former FBI agent, Joe Mann, are also defendants in a civil lawsuit pending in federal court in Knoxville related to the 1982 shooting of pharmacist David Comer. Merryman and Mann were allegedly working undercover in a probe of Cocke County chop shops when they learned that a car thief, Billy Hall, had confessed to shooting Comer.

Terror Machine Strikes U.S.

April 29—In reaction against the Obama Administration's rush-to-judgment declaration that the April 15 Boston Marathon bombing was the work of two brothers who were radicalized by reading Internet sites, and who had no ties to global terrorist networks, some Members of Congress are demanding a thorough probe of the accused bombers, and the role of the FBI in one of the most deadly terrorist acts on U.S. soil since Sept. 11, 2001.
Were such an investigation to take place, in spite of Obama White House and FBI interference, Americans may be given a long-overdue view into the Anglo-Saudi apparatus that has been responsible for nearly every act of global terrorism over the past several decades. This is the apparatus which was behind the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, and the Sept. 11, 2012 assault on the U.S. mission in Benghazi, Libya, in which U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other U.S. personnel were killed.
Appearing April 28 on Fox News, Rep. Michael McCaul (R-Tex.), Chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, declared that, after consulting with security professionals, he was convinced that the bombs used in the attack on the Boston Marathon were far too sophisticated to have been constructed based on Internet diagrams alone. He noted that the bombs were similar to those used frequently by terrorists in Pakistan, Afghanistan, and elsewhere. Both McCaul and Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.), who appeared with him on Fox, demanded answers about the recruitment and training of the bombers, and about what global networks the two young Chechens had been tracked into.
In an April 20 letter to the Director of the FBI, the Secretary of Homeland Security (DHS), and the Director of National Intelligence (DNI), Reps. McCaul and Peter King (R-N.Y.), the previous head of the Homeland Security Committee, also demanded an accounting by the FBI of its failure to act on leads provided by Russian security services, well over a year before the Boston bombings. Russian officials alerted the FBI in 2011 that Tamerlan Tsarnaev, the elder of the two brothers, should be investigated for ties to violent jihadist networks operating in the North Caucasus region of Russia. Similar warnings were provided by Russian officials to both the DHS and the CIA, and Tsarnaev was actually placed on a CIA watch list of suspected terrorists whose travels abroad should be monitored.
In their letter, McCaul and King cited at least five previous incidents, since the beginning of the Obama Administration, in which the FBI failed to pursue terror suspects, and in some cases, actually protected suspects as informants and agents provocateurs (see article, p. 23).
Two Tracks, Two Threats
In a very real sense, the Congressional demands for full disclosure from both the FBI and the Obama Administration define two separate, but critical tracks, of any serious investigation.
First and foremost, the Boston bombing, in which three people were killed, and many more grievously injured, demands an end to the coverup of the Anglo-Saudi guiding hand behind virtually all global terrorism. A serious probe into the apparatus behind decades of irregular warfare in the Caucasus region, Central Asia, Afghanistan-Pakistan, the Near East, and North Africa—an apparatus already implicated in the Boston bombings—would open up the entire British-Saudi alliance, and also lay bare the coverup by the George W. Bush and Obama administrations, a coverup which itself constitutes an impeachable crime.
At the same time that the full exposure of the Anglo-Saudi global terror machine is the top priority, it is also high time that a thorough probe of the criminal misconduct of the FBI be undertaken. The last time that Congress seriously looked into the abuses of power by the FBI, was back in the 1970s, when the Pike and Church committees in Congress, the Rockefeller Commission, and a Joint Congressional Inquiry into the Kennedy and Martin Luther King, Jr. assassinations, found the FBI guilty of widespread abuses of power, including illegal spying on American citizens.
The long-delayed probe of Anglo-Saudi terrorism will also unravel a longstanding British penetration of U.S. national security institutions, which has drawn the United States into British colonial adventures around the globe, particularly in the Arab and Islamic world, that have transformed the U.S.A. into a hate object for some of the very people who previously saw the U.S. as the role model for liberation from the yoke of colonial repression and looting.
A Hundred-Year Marriage
While British domination over the Persian Gulf region dates back to the 18th Century, when the ports of the Gulf were the way-stations and security outposts of the British East India Company's vital trade routes to the Indian Subcontinent, a marriage between the British and Saudi monarchies was forged. This took place in the immediate aftermath of World War I, when the Ottoman Empire was dissolved, and the British and French divided the Middle East under the Sykes-Picot treaty.
In 1921, British Colonial Secretary Winston Churchill had the following words of praise for the House of Saud in remarks delivered before the British House of Commons. They are, he said,

"austere, intolerant, well-armed, and bloodthirsty, and that they hold it as an article of duty, as well as faith, to kill all who do not share their opinions and to make slaves of their wives and children. Women have been put to death in Wahhabi villages for simply appearing in the streets. It is a penal offence to wear a silk garment. Men have been killed for smoking a cigarette."

Churchill, in conclusion, praised King Ibn Saud for his unswerving loyalty to Britain.
From 1917-53, the year King Abdulaziz Ibn Saud died, British Intelligence's man on the scene was Harry St. John Philby, the legendary "Arabist" and father of the triple-agent Kim Philby. According to British historian Mark Curtis, the elder Philby's assignment was to

"consult with the Foreign Office over ways to consolidate the rule and extend the influence of Ibn Saud."

In 1973, in the immediate aftermath of the breakup of the Bretton Woods fixed-exchange-rate system, the British government forged a strategic investment partnership with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, that also merged Anglo-Saudi geopolitical objectives. In a series of high-level diplomatic exchanges between 1973 and 1975, culminating in an October 1975 meeting between then-Crown Prince Fahd and Queen Elizabeth II, London became the financial center for the Saudi oil empire. "Former" British SAS commandos were deployed in large numbers into Saudi Arabia to train the National Guard, and to establish direct control over the security mechanisms protecting the Saudi Royals.
1975 was also the year that British Intelligence's Dr. Bernard Lewis was permanently redeployed to the United States. While teaching at Princeton University, Lewis became the leading Middle East policy advisor to a host of American national security policymakers, including Zbigniew Brzezinski and Dick Cheney. Prominent American neoconservatives of the last 30-plus years, including Michael Ledeen and Harold Rhode, were parrots for what came to be known as the "Bernard Lewis Plan." The essence of the plan was for Western powers to support the spread of Islamic fundamentalism across the southern tier of the Soviet Union, from the Caucasus, to Central Asia, to the western provinces of China.
The Afghan mujahideen project, under which Britain, the United States, and Saudi Arabia poured hundreds of billions of dollars in arms into the hands of Wahhabi and Salafist "freedom fighters" battling to drive the Soviet Army out of Afghanistan between 1979 and 1990, directly spawned al-Qaeda, the Afghan Taliban, the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group, and scores of other radical jihadist terror fronts.
Al-Yamamah
The Anglo-Saudi alliance—and joint sponsorship of global terrorism—entered a new phase in 1985, with the "Al-Yamamah" ("The Dove") oil-for-arms deal between London and Riyadh. The deal was brokered by Prince Bandar bin-Sultan, the longtime Saudi Ambassador in Washington, and the son of Saudi Arabia's Defense Minister Prince Sultan.
As EIR revealed in an exclusive exposé,[1] the Al-Yamamah deal established an offshore black operations fund worth hundreds of billions of dollars, skimmed from the lucrative sales of Saudi oil on the world spot market. Saudi princes pocketed tens of billions of dollars in kickbacks from the deal, which continues to this day, despite major corruption probes in Britain and the United States in the last decade.
In a revealing authorized biography of Prince Bandar, Anthony Simpson boasted,

"Although Al-Yamamah constitutes a highly unconventional way of doing business, its lucrative spin-offs are the by-products of a wholly political objective: a Saudi political objective and a British political objective.
"Al-Yamamah is, first and foremost, a political contract. Negotiated at the height of the Cold War, its unique structure has enabled the Saudis to purchase weapons from around the globe to fund the fight against Communism. Al-Yamamah money can be found in the clandestine purchase of Russian ordnance used in the expulsion of Qadaffi's troops from Chad. It can also be traced to arms bought from Egypt and other countries, and sent to the Mujahideen in Afghanistan fighting the Soviet occupying forces."

Al-Yamamah funds not only armed the Afghan mujahideen and bankrolled several African coups; payoffs from the British arms cartel BAE Systems to Prince Bandar, laundered from the Bank of England through Saudi Embassy bank accounts at Riggs National Bank in Washington, found their way directly into the hands of at least two of the 9/11 hijackers, Nawaf Alhazmi and Khalid Almihdar. The two San Diego-based hijackers were bankrolled and protected by two agents of the Saudi General Intelligence Directorate (GID), Osama Basnan and Omar al-Bayoumi. The men received between $50,000 and $72,000 from Prince Bandar during the period that the 9/11 terrorists were under their sponsorship.
When the Joint Congressional Inquiry staff probing the security failures leading to 9/11 unearthed the money trail from Bandar to the terrorists, and included it in a 28-page chapter in their final report, President George W. Bush ordered the entire 28 pages redacted from the report and placed under national security seal.
Right up to the present, President Barack Obama has maintained the coverup of the Anglo-Saudi hand behind the financing of 9/11.
In a March 30 letter to Rep. Mike Rogers (R-Mich.), Chairman of the House Select Committee on Intelligence, Rep. Walter Jones (R-N.C.) demanded that the 28 pages be released to the public, and that hearings take place on the full implications of the evidence.
Benghazi, Syria, and Beyond
If there is any doubt that the Bandar funding of at least two of the 9/11 terrorists was part of a systematic Anglo-Saudi policy, and not an inadvertent act of charity to Saudi nationals in need, just consider the aftermath of the 9/11 coverup.
After leaving his post in Washington, Bandar returned to the Kingdom, and was named National Security Advisor to King Abdullah. In July 2012, the Prince was named Director of the Saudi GID. Senior U.S. diplomatic and intelligence sources have confirmed that, from his posts as national security advisor and GID head, Bandar is directing a far-flung terrorist operation, currently focused on the funding of al-Qaeda fronts in Syria, Iraq, and Lebanon to overthrow the Assad government in Syria; waging irregular warfare against Hezbollah in Lebanon; and running a terrorist destabilization of Iraq.
Two of the Bandar-funded jihadist groups, al-Qaeda in Iraq (AQI) and the al-Nusra Front in Syria, have recently merged into a united neo-Salafist terror apparatus, now armed to the teeth to wage permanent terror war throughout the Near East and North Africa.
While the Obama Administration at the top is committed to protecting this Anglo-Saudi terror machine at all costs, not everyone in the U.S. government has gone along with the protection racket. At the outset of the first Obama Administration, then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton established a joint task force with the Treasury Department, to crack down on Saudi funding of jihadist terrorists.
In a Dec. 30, 2009 State Department cable, in preparation for a visit to Riyadh by Richard Holbrooke and David Cohen, the co-directors of the joint task force on terrorist financing, Clinton wrote that

"donors in Saudi Arabia constitute the most significant source of funding to Sunni terrorist groups worldwide. Continued senior-level USG engagement is needed to build on initial efforts and encourage the Saudi government to take more steps to stem the flow of funds from Saudi Arabia-based sources to terrorists and extremists worldwide."

Documentation presented in lawsuits against the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia by survivors and relatives of victims of the 9/11 attack makes clear that the "donors" referred to in the Clinton cable are all either members of the royal family, officials of the Ministry of Religious Affairs, or heads of charities all sponsored by the Saudi Monarchy.
While there is no magic bullet solution to the growing plague of international terrorism, and while the recent Boston Marathon bombings show that there is no place to hide from the scourge, the indispensable first step toward eradicating this plague is to break the coverup and expose the top-down Anglo-Saudi hand behind world terrorism.
EIR has been the publication of record, exposing the British role in all global terrorism and illegal drug trafficking—the other primary source of funds to the worldwide terror machine. The Anglo-Saudi alliance must be broken, and the Bush and Obama administration officials who willfully covered up the terror trail must also be brought to justice. The pages that follow offer a small piece of the available evidence of this ongoing crime against humanity.

The FBI’s File on Howard Zinn

The FBI just released a voluminous file on progressive historian Howard Zinn.

The file alleges that Zinn was a member of the Communist Party in the late 1940s and early 1950s, though he steadfastly denied it when the FBI twice interviewed him.


Oddly, the FBI even tried to turn Howard Zinn into an informant, but when he refused to play ball or name names, they gave up on him. Later, in the 1960s, they deemed a high security risk to the country, a category that allowed them to summarily arrest him if an emergency were to be declared, the documents show.

The file also refers to Zinn’s influence on Martin Luther King’s attitude toward the FBI, with the agency adding that it should straighten King out.

Several documents also refer to Zinn’s wife, Roslyn, whom the FBI claimed was affiliated with the Communist Party for a while, as well.

J. Edgar Hoover himself kept apprised of Zinn’s activities from the earliest years. President Lyndon Johnson received FBI memos from Hoover about Zinn when he and Daniel Berrigan went to North Vietnam in 1968 and won the return of two captured U.S. airmen.

The first document, March 3, 1949, relies on information supplied by a “confidential informant” who said Zinn “is a Communist Party member and attends Party meetings five times a week in Brooklyn.” It also lists some of his political activities.

It says that Zinn picketed the White House on March 26, 1948, with the “American Committee to Protect the Jewish State and the United Nations.”

It says he was a “delegate to the American Peace Mobilization in Chicago.”

It says he was “picketing butcher shops” in Brooklyn on July 18, 1946.

It says his “name appears on letterhead of Brooklyn Citizens’ Committee for Right of Bank Workers to Organize.”

And it says he was a member of American Veterans Committee.

It also says that “an inquiry was made of the subject’s sister, Doris Zinn, 926 Lafayette Avenue, under suitable pretext.”

Zinn’s daughter, Myla Kabat-Zinn, is struck by this reference.

“My father never had a sister,” says Kabat-Zinn, who perused some pages of the file. “It’s just bizarre. If they thought he had a sister, I have to question a lot of what’s in the file.”



The second released document, dated March 30, 1949, and with “Director, FBI” on it, has Zinn’s name in caps and the words “Security Matter” under it. The New York office is instructed “to obtain additional information concerning this subject’s membership in the Communist Party or concerning his activities in behalf of the party.” The last line reads: “Particular emphasis should be placed on obtaining admissible evidence.”

The FBI kept track of Zinn while he was attending NYU, and the agency noted that “Zinn filed claim for ‘property damage’ against the State of New York” after the police failed to prevent anti-communist mobs from using violence to disrupt Paul Robeson’s performances.

In the strangest part of the file, the FBI tries to recruit Zinn as an informant. A document dated October 12, 1953, and sent to J. Edgar Hoover, outlines the effort. “When the subject is observed leaving his residence alone, and when he is a discreet distance from his place of residence, he will be contacted in a direct manner by two agents assigned to the Security Informant Program.”

On November 6, 1953, two agents of the FBI watched Zinn leave his home and then approached him, according to a document to Hoover dated November 25, 1953. “The agents introduced themselves to Zinn and advised him that they had a confidential matter to discuss with him,” the document says. “He was told that he was not being contacted with the idea of intimidating or having him incriminate himself but for the purpose of determining his attitude towards aiding the United States Government. It was noted that he was a citizen of this country, a parent and veteran, and had certain responsibilities to himself, his family, and country.”

Then they made their accusations. “He was advised that the Bureau had received information concerning his associations with the CP and was affording him this opportunity to discuss it with agents of the FBI,” the document says. “Zinn stated that he was not now or was he ever a member of the CP.”

Zinn told them “he was a liberal and perhaps some people would consider him to be a ‘leftist.’ Zinn said that he had participated in the activities of various organizations which might be considered Communist fronts but that his participation was motivated by his belief that in this country people had the right to believe, think, and act according to their own ideals. . . . According to Zinn, he was not ashamed of his past activities and did not believe that he or his activities constituted a threat to the security of this country or Government.”

Toward the end of this four-page “Letter to Director,” the agents describe Zinn as “courteous, friendly, and willing to discuss his activities except for the denials noted previously. He was reluctant, however, to discuss other persons who were associated with him in the various Communist front organizations.” The agents recommended that “Zinn should be recontacted under the Security Informant Program.”

That recontact occurred on February 8, 1954, according to a document to Hoover dated February 24 of that year. Again, Zinn denied that he or his wife had ever been a member of the Communist Party. And again, Zinn refused to name names. “He stated under no circumstances would he testify or furnish information concerning the political opinions of others.” The agents concluded that it was no use. “It is believed that additional interviews with Zinn would not turn him from his current attitude; therefore he will not be reinterviewed under the SI program, and this matter will be closed.”



After that, the FBI continued to keep tabs on Zinn, his political activities, his attendance at Columbia, and his move to Atlanta to teach at Spelman College. It even noted that he “subscribed to the ‘National Guardian’ in 1953,” according to a document dated March 29, 1957. The FBI also got a hold of a 1950 letter Zinn wrote to the Supreme Court about the trial of eleven Communists under the Smith Act. Wrote Zinn to the Court: “Free speech is the cornerstone of a free America and it cannot be preserved unless the Smith Act is declared unconstitutional.”

For a few years, Zinn’s time at Spelman didn’t concern the FBI. But then Zinn wrote a report for the Southern Regional Council about race relations in Albany, Georgia. Zinn was harshly critical of the FBI in that report, noting that “the FBI has not made a single arrest on behalf of Negro citizens.” The New York Post ran an article about his criticisms on November 16, 1962. On a copy of the clipping, Hoover himself wrote: “What do we know of Zinn?”

Agency officials responded with a memo on November 27, 1962, rehashing the old accusations against Zinn. It added: “Files indicate that Zinn has been active in protesting policies of this country concerning Cuba.” The memo was sent to assistant director Cartha “Deke” DeLoach. Handwritten at the bottom is the notation: “Suggest our friends on Georgia papers be alerted.”

On December 23, 1962, an FBI document again refers to Zinn’s Albany report and notes that it “has also been commented upon by Reverend Martin Luther King. King went along with the general theme of the article.” It added: “Assistant Directors Sullivan and DeLoach have made an attempt to contact Reverend Mr. King to straighten him out concerning the work of this Bureau.”



On May 21, 1963, an FBI document reported that Zinn had participated on a panel about blacks in the media. “Zinn was critical of the Administration, the President, and the Vice President concerning their position on civil rights. He also stated, ‘Our Attorney General is callous, and the FBI incompetent to deal with civil rights problems.’ ” Clyde Tolson, associate director of the FBI, was reported asking, “What do our files show on Zinn?”

On May 29, 1963, another FBI memo, with the director’s name on it, orders agents to dig up and spread information about Zinn. “You are instructed to review your files, contact logical sources, and submit an up-to-date report suitable for dissemination. This report should include all pertinent public source information concerning the subject.”

On July 31, 1963, the FBI noted that “subject dismissed from position at Spelman College.” The agency followed him back to Newton, Massachusetts, and obtained “four photos of subject, wife, and daughter,” according to another memo to Hoover dated November 18, 1963. It listed Zinn’s occupation as “self-employed—writer.”

On January 8, 1964, an FBI memo discussed a Boston Globe article that covered Zinn’s repeated criticism of the FBI for failing to protect blacks against white mob violence. As before, the recommended action: “friendly news sources in the Boston area may be contacted concerning our role in civil rights matters.”

On January 10, 1964, Hoover wrote a memo ordering Zinn’s name to be “included in Reserve Index, Section A,” a classification that would mean he could be rounded up if an emergency were declared. In this memo, Hoover says Zinn “has continued to demonstrate procommunist and anti-United States sympathies.”

The FBI repeatedly asked its contacts within the Communist Party in the Boston area about Zinn, but “they did not know the subject and could furnish no information concerning him,” notes one document from the Boston office on February 18, 1964. (Several subsequent documents all show the Boston office finding no contacts between Zinn and the Communist Party there.)

On May 18, 1964, an FBI memo discusses an article Zinn wrote for The Nation entitled “Incident in Hattiesburg” about the FBI and the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. This prompted the FBI to classify Zinn as an even higher security risk.


“Because of lack of evidence of membership in a basic revolutionary organization since 1953, subject’s name was included in the Reserve Index, Section A, rather than in the Security Index,” states the document from the FBI’s J. F. Bland to assistant FBI director W. C. Sullivan.

Bland then spells out what these classifications mean. “The Reserve Index represents a special group of individuals scheduled to receive priority attention with respect to investigation, interrogation, or detention under the terms of the Emergency Detention Program following invoking of the Program and arrest of all Security Index subjects.” (NB: The original is not in bold.)

Bland goes on to explain why Zinn deserves to be placed in the higher-risk category. “Subject’s activities make this a close case as to whether he belongs on the Reserve Index or the Security Index. He can, however, be included on the Security Index under the criterion “facts have been developed which clearly and unmistakably depict the subject as a dangerous individual who may commit acts inimical to the national defense and public safety of the United States in time of an emergency.’ ”

On May 19, 1964, a memo with “Director, FBI” on it, says: “The Bureau is of the opinion that subject’s name should be included in the Security Index.”

On March 7, 1966, Hoover wrote the director of the Secret Service about Zinn, Hoover did so again exactly a year later. The reason: “Because of background is potentially dangerous; or has been identified as member or participant in communist movement; or has been under active investigation as member of other group or organization inimical to U.S.”

The FBI followed Zinn’s civil rights and anti-Vietnam War activities, noting his “Logic of Withdrawal” pamphlet and the fact that he spoke at a 1967 rally in New York with Martin Luther King and Dr. Benjamin Spock.

The file also reveals that Hoover sent a coded teletype to the President, the Secretary of State, the Director of the CIA, the Director of the Defense Intelligence Agency, the Department of the Army, the Department of the Air Force, and the White House Situation Room about the trip Zinn took with Berrigan to free the two U.S. airmen on January 31, 1968.

The last document, dated April 2, 1968, refers to an anti-draft rally planned for the next day in Boston Commons. “This demonstration is expected to last approximately two to three hours and attract some 10,000 persons,” the document says. “Howard Zinn, well-known Boston University professor and Security Index subject, and Avram Noam Chomsky, a Selective Service subject, will be among the speakers.”

Zinn’s daughter, Myla Kabat-Zinn, isn’t shocked that the FBI kept such a voluminous file on her dad.

“We all expected this,” she says. “This is not a surprise. Anybody who was active in protesting and speaking out at that time kind of expected to have an FBI file. My father always knew they had a file on him.”

Angela Davis: FBI Targeting Assata Shakur ‘Reflects Very Logic Of Terrorism’

ANGELA-ASSATALegendary activist, scholar, author and former political prisoner Angela Davis (pictured left), who is currently a professor at the University of California, Santa Cruz, is still speaking truth to power, specifically as it pertains to revolutionary freedom fighter, Assata Shakur (pictured right).

In an interview on Democracy Now with Amy Goodman and Juan González, Davis said that the FBI placing Shakur on its “Most Wanted Terrorists” list, the first woman to be so designated, “reflects the very logic of terrorism.”

“It seems to me that this act incorporates or reflects the very logic of terrorism,” Davis says. “I can’t help but think that it’s designed to frighten people who are involved in struggles today. Forty years ago seems like it was a long time ago. In the beginning of the 21st century, we’re still fighting around the very same issues — police violence, healthcare, education, people in prison.”

Davis was joined by Lennox Hinds, Assata Shakur’s attorney since 1973 and professor of criminal justice at Rutgers University, who also said the act is politically motivated:

Shakur, formerly Joanne Chesimard, was a member of the Black Panther Party and Black Liberation Army. In addition to being the first woman placed on the “Most Wanted Terrorists,” Shakur, the godmother of slain Hip-Hop artist, poet, actor and activist, Tupac Shakur, is only the second person from inside the United States to placed on the list. In an unexpected move, the state of New Jersey announced it was adding $1 million to the FBI’s $1 million reward for her capture.

Though the politically accepted version of events vilifies Shakur, please read below for the facts.

Shakur was falsely convicted of having killed an officer on May 2, 1973. While driving on the New Jersey Turnpike, Assata, Zayd Shakur, and Sundiata Acoli were stopped by state troopers, allegedly for having a “faulty taillight.” A shootout ensued where one state trooper killed Zayd Shakur, and another trooper, Werner Foerster, ended up dead. Shakur was charged with both murders, despite the fact that the other trooper, James Harper, admitted he killed Zayd Shakur.

Assata had been, following police instructions, standing with her hands in the air, when she was shot by Trooper Harper more than once, including a bullet to the back. Trooper Harper lied and said he had seen Shakur reach for a gun, a claim he later recanted. He also claimed she had been in a firing position, something a surgeon who examined her said was “anatomically impossible.” The same surgeon said it was “anatomically necessary” for her arms to have been raised for her to receive the bullet wounds she did. Tests done by the police found that Shakur had not fired a gun, and no physical or medical evidence was presented by the prosecution to back up their claim that she had fired a gun at Trooper Harper.

While she was in trial proceedings, the state attempted to pin six other serious crimes on her, alleging she had carried out bank robberies, kidnappings and attempted killings. She was acquitted three times, two were dismissed and one resulted in a hung jury.

Shakur was put on trial in a county where because of pre-trial publicity 70 percent of people thought she was guilty, and she was judged by an all-white jury. Without any physical evidence to present, the prosecution had to rely totally on false statements and innuendo aimed at playing on the prejudices of the jury pool against Black people, political radicals, and Black revolutionaries in particular. Finally, after years behind bars, the state secured her conviction for the Turnpike shooting.

In 1979, Shakur escaped from jail and fled to Cuba where she received political asylum and has lived ever since.

She once wrote, “I am a 20th century escaped slave. Because of government persecution, I was left with no other choice than to flee from the political repression, racism and violence that dominate the U.S. government’s policy towards people of color.”

It speaks to the hypocrisy of the United States that there are police officers who have not only killed unarmed, innocent people, but are roaming free and lauded for their bravery. Based on the criteria, there are certain police departments who should be characterized as domestic terror cells. But instead, the FBI is going after a 65-year-old revolutionary who isn’t even guilty and — by international law — has the right to seek political asylum.

It is amazing — and pathetic — how swiftly the FBI felt compelled to frame the domestic terrorism conversation around a Black revolutionary living in Cuba, instead of two White men from Boston.

Timing is everything — and the timing of this travesty of justice speaks volumes.
