Russia Today, Propaganda Arm of Putin’s Russia

Russia Today

Russia Today is a Russian media outlet, aimed at de-stabilizing and weakening opponents of Russian foreign policy.

Purpose

Most Americans have never heard of Russia Today (RT) television, a propaganda arm of the Putin-Medvedev-KGB-run Russian thugocracy, but thanks to a former KGB officer, Konstantin Preobrazhensky, more about its origins and purposes have been revealed.

In a "Statement by Konstantin Preobrazhensky, former Soviet KGB officer, on the impact and purpose of Russia Today (RT) television", given to America's Survival, Inc. organization, led by noted journalist Cliff Kincaid, released April 1, 2011, the former KGB officer wrote the following about it.

"Russia Today" was founded in 2005 especially for propaganda abroad. It has been aimed at 'explaining Russia's position on the main international issues and inform foreigners about Russian life'. According to Gzt.ru, it has been financed totally by the Russian government. In 2005-2006, the government has delivered $30 million annually. In 2011-2013, "Russia Today" will get $216 million (6,483 billion rubles).

The methods of propaganda are managed by Directorate "A" of Russian Foreign Intelligence Service. The specialty of Directorate "A" is deceiving world public opinion and manipulating it. It has got a lot of experence over decades of the Cold War.

"Russia Today" is only a part of the Russian industry misinformation and manipulation created recently in the USA by Putin's KGB. It is including the utilization of some American think-tanks and political scientists, their direct work up by Putin at annual meetings in Russia, putting Russian Americans under Kremlin's control, etc. This industry aims at creating an inadequate, adorned image of Russia, provoking American to make wrong steps in their Russian politics.

These steps are many, like refusal to deploy ballistic missile defenses in Eastern Europe, allowing the KGB-ruled Moscow Patriarchate to absorb Russian Church abroad in 2007, personal acceptance by President Bush of a Russian criminal in the war in Chechnya, General Shamanov, in 2006 and, of course, closing the Russian Service in Voice of America in 2008. Maybe Americans consider the VOA Russian Service to be a mere relic of the Cold War, unnecessary in free Russia, but in fact it has been one of the last sources of independent information for Russians. It has irritated Russian authorities. Putin has managed to close it with the Americans' hands.

On the other hand, Russian propagandist TV channel "Russia Today" is very active in America. Nobody is going to close it or to transfer it to the Internet, as was done with the VOA Russian Service.

Russian-American cooperation is one-sided. Only Russia is getting benefits from it. America is enjoying euphoria of victory over Communism in the Cold War, but Russians say the war is still going on.

According to American logic, Communism should have been replaced with democracy and all its attributes like human rights, independent media, division of power, and all the others. And it has really taken place in the East European countries of the former Soviet bloc, but not in its core, Russia. Now, there is only on attribute of democracy, all the others have been destroyed by Putin. It is private property. But if this property is large enough, it should be approved by the government, or the government will ruin your business.

Anti-Americanism has become the basis of Russian foreign policy nowadays. Hatred of America is hatred of democracy.

In the past, the Soviet Union published many magazines and journals aimed at influencing American public opinion to view the communist state in a favorable light. Among these publications were the following:

Soviet Culture - "A publication of the American Russian Institute, San Francisco, and among those publications found 'to be Communist initiated and controlled, or so strongly influenced as to be in the Stalin solar system.", cited in California Senate Fact-Finding Committee on Un-American Activities, Report 1948, p. 225 and Cal. Senate Report 1949, p. 547; listed on Page 233 of the HCUA Guide to Subversive Organizations and Publications (and Appendixes, Dec. 1, 1961.

Soviet Russia Today - "Soviet Russia Today commenced as the official organ of Friends of the Soviet Union. It and its successor New World Review NWR have a continuous record of over 22 years of uninterrupted publication and admittedly have operated in respondent's (the) National Council of American-Soviet Friendship, Inc. NCASF interest and are used as educational media by respondent." "Jessica Smith was ***shown to be long-time member and functionary of the Communist Party, as well as in the Party-controlled Friends of the Soviet Union. She has been continuously the editor of Soviet Russia Today and its successor, New World review, for years." She has also been on the Board of Directors of the NCASF, Inc., since it was incorporated in 1943 or shortly thereafter."

As cited in The Guide to Subversive Organizations, Page 201, regarding "Subversive Activities Control Board, Docket No. 104-53, Report and Order with respect to the National Council of American-Soviet Friendship, Inc., February 7, 1956, pp. 20 & 22; see also pp. 7 & 9." Soviet Russia Today was also cited as a "Communist front or front publication" by SPCUA, House Report 1311, on the CIO Political Action Committee, March 29, 1944; HCUA Annual Report, HReport 2277, June 25, 1942; HCUA House Report 1953, on the Congress of American Women, April 26, 1950/Oct. 23, 1949 and the Senate Judiciary Committee, Senate Report 2050 on the Institute of Pacific Relations IPR, July 2, 1952.

Soviet Life - a later magazine based on the Life Magazine formatting style, also of life in the Soviet Union. Printed especially for the American readership.

These publications was brought into the U.S. through Communist Party USA front operations, posing as international import businesses, especially in Chicago, Illinois where a key one was run by identified CPUSA members LeRoy Wolins and David S. Canter[1].

Canter, according to his son Marc Canter, was an acquaintance of a young community organizer in Chicago named Barack Obama, and also worked with longtime leftist political organizer Don Rose. Both were reportedly political mentors of top Obama adviser, former Chicago Tribune journalist David Axelrod.

Accuracy In Media Report details from April 8, 2011.

Hired Julian Assange

Christian Science Monitor Moscow correspondent Fred Weir reports that Starting in March, 2012, Julian Assange will host a 10-part series of interview programs with "key political players, thinkers and revolutionaries" on Russia Today, a state-funded English-language satellite news network which claims to reach more than 85 million viewers in the US alone.

According to a statement on his website, the new Assange series will explore the "upheavals and revolutions" that are shaking the Middle East and expose how "the deterioration of the rule of law has demonstrated the bankruptcy of once leading political institutions and ideologies" in the West.
Entitled "The World Tomorrow," the show will be filmed by an RT satellite crew at Ellingham Hall, the remote manor house 130 miles north of London. It's the same place Assange has been under house arrest since December 2010 awaiting a Supreme Court decision on his extradition to Sweden to face sexual assault allegations.

One British newspaper, The Guardian, has published its own wish list of people it would like to see go head-to-head with him, including former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, media tycoon Rupert Murdoch, and US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.

"Through this series I will explore the possibilities for our future in conversations with those who are shaping it," Assange said in his statement. "Are we heading towards utopia, or dystopia and how we can set our paths? This is an exciting opportunity to discuss the vision of my guests in a new style of show that examines their philosophies and struggles in a deeper and clearer way than has been done before."

The network says the series could reach as many as 600 million viewers worldwide.

The six-year-old Russia Today, which seems far better funded than most media these days, has battled accusations that it is a Kremlin vanity project since its inception.

The station tends to tiptoe gingerly around the controversies of Russian politics, but aggressively applies its own slogan – "Question More" – in its coverage of Western affairs and particularly the global role of the US.

In 2010 it opened a full-time US TV channel, RT America, which produces independent content on US politics and economics from what it calls an alternative – critics say anti-American – point of view.

Hiring Assange would seem a perfect fit for RT. Worries that WikiLeaks might dump a lot of embarrassing material about the Russian government into Internet never panned out. 8-|

However, the thousands of US diplomatic cables that it did release proved to be the gift-that-keeps-on-giving for critics and rivals of Washington, including the Kremlin.

"We liked a lot of the WikiLeaks revelations. It was very much in sync with what Russia Today has been reporting about the Arab Spring, and about the duplicitous policies of the US and its allies all along," says Peter Lavelle, a senior journalist with RT and host of its Cross Talk public affairs program.

"I think the Russian government will be pleased [to see Assange working on RT]. It's a soft power coup for Russia,"
he added.[2]

“Julian Assange: Whistleblower or Spy for Moscow?”

Submitted by Trevor on February 13, 2012 – 5:36 pm EST

http://www.trevorloudon.com/2012/02/jul ... or-moscow/

Julian Assange of WikiLeaks fame, claims to hate secrecy and corruption wherever it may be found.

However his WikiLeaks revelations have mainly worked against the interests of Washington and in favor of Moscow.

Is this deliberate?

Image

My new report “Julian Assange: Whistleblower or Spy for Moscow?” attempts to shed light on this question.

Yevgeny Bazhanov, vice chancellor of research and international relations at the Foreign Ministry’s Diplomatic Academy in Moscow. He has written openly and favorably about Assange in Moscow Times: Now, in the 21st century, we have WikiLeaks founded by anarchist and anti-imperialist Julian Assange who is driven by a hatred for capitalism and the United States. In the modern age of the Internet, Kalashnikovs and dynamite are no longer necessary to try to overthrow the enemy. Modern technology and outstanding hacking skills allow anarchists to help weaken the United States, the citadel of capitalism…
Undoubtedly, WikiLeaks delivered a heavy blow to the United States.

First, it showed the world that U.S. diplomats might smile to your face while they sharpen their knives behind your back. Second, WikiLeaks exposed the vulnerability of the world’s most powerful country. Seasoned spies used to hunt for years for a single page of classified information, but WikiLeaks and its alleged main leaker, U.S. Private Bradley Manning, in one fell swoop scored more than 500,000 classified and secret U.S. military and diplomatic documents. Third, the leaks will surely discourage the world from dealing candidly with the United States.

Ron Paul Reportedly Cuts Ties to Russian Channel

By Cliff Kincaid – August 25, 2011

The Russia Today propaganda channel, which has just cancelled the “Adam Vs. The Man” show featuring American Adam Kokesh, has come to the assistance of the brutal Assad regime in Syria. “A media delegation from the Russian channel ‘Russia Today’ visited the Military Hospital of Tishreen in Damascus and listened [to] the truth about Syria’s events from the injured soldiers and law-enforcement personnel,” reports the official Syrian news agency.

According to this bizarre account, the human rights demonstrators in the streets being shot and killed by the regime are “armed terrorist groups” that use “machineguns, snipers and grenades with the aim of killing.” =))

Image

Meantime, on his August 22 show on Russia Today, Kokesh aired a “Happy Birthday Ron Paul” segment that included “an update from Congressman Ron Paul’s campaign” about his fundraising success. The next day, however, he announced he was being terminated by Moscow management and that Paul’s campaign was no longer cooperating with the broadcast.

Politico’s Keach Hagey is now reporting that his on-air fundraising for Republican presidential candidate Paul, an apparent violation of U.S. law against foreign contributions to U.S. political campaigns, may have been a factor. (see Hagey story below).

Russia Today, or “RT” as it likes to call itself, in order to camouflage the Russian sponsorship and funding, is not only brazenly defending the Syrian regime, a long-time client state of the old Soviet Union, but is attacking NATO over its military campaign against the Gaddafi regime in Libya. NATO was a long-time target of the old Soviet Union because of its original role as an anti-Soviet alliance.

The channel has been described as a front for Russian intelligence activities.

Yvonne Di Vito of a group called “Libyan friends” told RT that the Gaddafi regime, a notorious dictatorship, had a good record on human rights. =)) She insisted, “Differently from other countries that went through a revolution -- Libya is considered to be the Switzerland of the African continent and is very rich and schools are free for the people. Hospitals are free for the people. And the conditions for women are much better than in other Arab countries.”
But with Gaddafi apparently on the run, RT has been concentrating on Syria. RT quotes a researcher as saying that the U.S and Israel are behind the unrest there.

One RT story carried the headline, “Western media lie about Syria – eyewitness reports.”

Another RT story featured the views of James Corbett, who describes his “Corbett Report” as providing “breaking news and important issues from 9/11 Truth and false flag terror to the Big Brother police state, eugenics, geopolitics, the central banking fraud and more.” =)) =)) =)) Corbett suggested Russia could intervene in Syria to prevent a collapse of the regime.

RT also featured “the journalist Simon Assaf” condemning the U.S. for trying to weaken the Syrian regime. Assaf is a contributor to international Marxist publications such as Socialist Review.

As strange as all of this may seem, the Moscow-funded propaganda channel had developed a significant viewership of Ron Paul supporters in the U.S. who regarded the Adam Kokesh show as a vehicle for airing their theories nationwide. Reacting to accounts of Paul collaborating with the channel and having foreign policy views that benefit Russia and its allies, a John Birch Society writer went to Paul’s defense, saying that he had been an anti-Communist Congressman from 1979 to 1985 (Paul is still a member of Congress but has announced he will concentrate on running for president and will not seek re-election to the House).

Suddenly, however, Kokesh announced on Tuesday that his own show had been cancelled.

Image

While some of Ron Paul’s supporters are attempting to blame this columnist, for filing a Federal Election Commission (FEC) complaint over Kokesh’s on-air fundraising for Paul’s presidential campaign, others are citing Paul’s refusal to recently appear on the network and the influence of his campaign manager, Jesse Benton, who reportedly said, “Ron Paul does not do interviews with Russia Today...You’ve got Adam Kokesh on the air beating his chest every night...and no one watches you guys anyway.”

It is illegal for a foreign corporation such as RT to interfere in U.S. elections by providing campaign support for any candidate. However, the FEC complaint is being investigated and has not yet been resolved by the agency.

Politico quoted Benton as saying, “Our campaign accepts only legal contributions, but we are declining interviews with Russia Today until they resolve this situation.”

Paul had appeared on the Kokesh show on May 4 and in 2009 was on the channel calling for an end to NATO and attacking former President Bush’s anti-terrorism policies. During another 2009 appearance on RT, Paul called sanctions against Iran over its nuclear weapons program an “act of war.” In 2008, Paul gave Russia Today another interview, saying, “It’s great that the cold War has ended. And I would want to continue the process of [a] peaceful relationship but not threaten Russia in any way because I don’t think it’s necessary.” :-o :-o

Paul supported Kokesh’s 2010 run for Congress, saying, “Adam Kokesh has dedicated his life to fighting for Liberty. =)) He has set himself apart as one of the bold young leaders our Country sorely needs as we strive to restore our Freedoms and what has made America the greatest nation in history. I am very happy that Adam has decided to run for Congress and wholeheartedly endorse him.” Paul’s political organization gave Kokesh $3000, his biggest financial contribution. :-o

Image

But in the wake of Benton’s comments, Kokesh had gone on the air on RT on August 23, his final show, noting that he had repeatedly been trying to get Ron Paul back on the air and that the disparaging remarks from Benton had been the only official response.

At the Daily Paul, a website that supports the candidate, one blogger cited the FEC complaint and said Kokesh had made a mistake “by linking his efforts on RT to the official campaign, thereby placing the PEC (official campaign) in potential legal jeopardy. Regardless of whether or not you like RT or like and agree with Kokesh as I do, I'm sure the campaign did not appreciate having to deal with this potential legal headache and potential media nightmare.”
The blogger faulted Kokesh, a former congressional candidate, for his “complete lack of political sense and understanding of even basic concepts of law and regulations regarding campaigns.”

However, Kokesh reportedly says the FEC complaint had nothing to do with the termination of his show and that he will have more to say about the controversy when his relationship with the channel is worked out. He said on the air on RT that he could return in a different “format.”

Kokesh, who freely admitted being a “paid Russian agent” while on the air, had claimed total freedom and editorial control over his RT program.

Aren't you tired of talking to yourself by now Old Man? Poor lonely old guy. Look at it this way. The upside of Alzheimer's is that you are always meeting new friends. Even if all of them are you! I can almost visualize Putin and all his comrades having a good belly laugh at western patriots who fall for all the subtle propaganda by anyone out there who throws in a buzz word or two such as .. (name your favorite conspiracy term)

I'm so glad to see those powers of discernment fully operational with you Jas. ;) My biggest concern in the freedom arena is to see well meaning people duped into accepting deceptive propaganda from compromised sources just because it may line up with well established paradigms of the many combinations at work. Satan is a clever devil and he will tell a lot of half truths to get someone to fall for his big lies. So much deception; so little time. LOL

It is an interesting world....my background propels me into the tracking of $$$...because that's where it all seems to originate....and on this one -
Midas Resources was formed in 1996 by Anderson, already a 17-year veteran of the precious metals business, who incorporated GCN the following year. The leap to radio, he says, was a natural progression.

“They actually work hand-in-hand,” said Anderson. “One fits like a glove. They’re partnership-type businesses; Midas Resources needs customers, Genesis Communications Network needs sponsors.”

I have a sneaking suspicion there's no such thing as a true grassroots movement. If something's successful I immediately start wondering which power player is promoting it.

I like your approach Bro. Follow the money baby. Something akin to using the treasures of the earth like say maybe even gold and silver and worthless fiat currency to buy up all kinds of power needed to control the souls of mankind. Now where have I heard that before?? :ymdevil:

The Cold War to the Info War; Russia Today continues transparent attempt at co-option

Posted by ohai on December 21, 2011

In what appears to be the Kremlin’s immodest attempt at subversion and co-option of the American Spring, RT (Russia Today) has enamored a whole generation of net savvy young adults. The network mostly seems to focus on anti-american specific content. From the Occupy Wall Street movement to the financial crisis, no opportunity to subdue the disenfranchised American people is missed.

RT (Russia Today) is fully funded by the Kremlin. It is linked to the Voice of Russia, which is an early Soviet-era radio station, preaching the greatness of Stalin. Guests on the programs are often radical left leaning authors that have been blacklisted on mainstream U.S media outlets. Just one example would be the infamous Ted Rall, who not long ago made a call for the violent overthrow of the United States in his recent book the Anti American manifesto. He is handily welcome on RT and a recurring guest.

When LulzSec (LulzSecurity) took down the website for the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) cia.gov over the summer RT didn’t hesitate to celebrate the momentous occasion. “Here’s to LulzSec” said one youth-faced Adam Kokesh, a host on Russia Today. Giving Old Glory the finger from Moscow would have Herbert Hoover rolling in his grave. As a movement and as a nation, this type of shameless and unabashed manipulation should not be taken lightly. Yes, there are key elements of our culture that need to be changed and addressed. However, having a foreign government use the countries intermittent misery as some sort of political opportunity only makes them look petty, and somehow in the midst of our current socioeconomic meltdown, all the more greedy.

The network dubs itself as “An English-language news channel broadcasting stories to make you Question More“.

Right.

Anyone with even a slight modicum of historical knowledge may be able to decipher what is going on. The network uses the abbreviation RT instead of Russia Today to inadequately mask it’s biased roots. Now before you suggest that all media is biased, let us remember that in internet age there are several impartial sources for news, and that journalistic integrity still exists. What we need are more citizen journalists taking to the streets, uploading video and commentary that they find for themselves and post without censorship or the approval of some editorial department far removed from them.

Is RussiaToday truly nothing but intended propaganda against the West and its allies? The interwebs certainly seem to think so. Google’s auto-complete lists “Russia Today propaganda” as one of their top search suggestions and several other publications such as the World Tribune and Digital Journal have also taken notice.

As a person that has attended and been arrested at multiple protests and gatherings in the past decade, the latest of which was at OccupyDC, I write this knowing full well the plethora of issues that face this country. However, one thing we definitely do not need are hardened opportunists like those with Russia Today.

Not many take Russia Today seriously. They are a weird pro-Putin propaganda outlet. Anyone who would sympathize with the Iranian & Syrian government is insane.

Funny segment from Al-Jazeera on Russia Today's broadcasts.

I know a few liberty-loving people from Russia due to my time on other forums, you won't believe how obvious the corruption in the government is there. They don't even hide the voting fraud to keep Putin in power. With that said, Putin has been the best leader for Russia in quite some time. But he needs to get out of office. For the sake of Russia and for the sake of American-Russian relations.
