‘We Will Not Comply’: Catholic Leaders Distribute Letter Slamming Obama Admin Contraceptive Mandate

Posted on January 30, 2012 at 10:01am by Billy Hallowell

We’ve covered the Catholic Church’s ongoing battle with the Obama administration over contraception health care mandates for quite some time. Over the weekend, though, the stand-off took an unusual turn, as Catholic churches across America read a letter to congregants that perfectly encapsulated the church’s stance against the impending federal requirements.

The Church’s vocal arguments against the Obama administration are centered upon a Health and Human Services Department requirement that employers must include contraception and abortion-inducing drugs in health-care coverage. While this requirement doesn’t apply to houses of worship, it will force Catholic colleges, hospitals and other Christian groups to provide these drugs despite their faith-based opposition to them.

Many of these organizations, despite not being, themselves, churches, are intrinsically rooted in religious belief systems that stand firmly opposed to medications and procedures that would terminate the life of an unborn child. These deeply-rooted moral codes, which drive the groups’ work, will be impeded, Catholic leaders say, should the Obama administration continue with its planned mandate.

Recently, the federal government made one small concession surrounding the requirement, as officials decided to give church-affiliated hospitals and organizations another year before they will be forced to comply with the coverage restrictions.

Archbishop Timothy Dolan (AP)

“In effect, the president is saying we have a year to figure out how to violate our consciences,” Cardinal-designate Timothy M. Dolan, archbishop of New York and president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, recently said.

Over the weekend, the Catholic Church’s letter went beyond simply issuing oppositional rhetoric to media. Instead, priests read an open note to congregations across the country, dubbing the administration‘s take on women’s health and religious violations as an attack on their faith. In the letter, Bishops highlighted what they called “an alarming and serious matter,“ as their words contended that the federal government has ”dealt a heavy blow” to the Catholic population.

In it, Catholic leaders went on to say that the Church “cannot—we will not—comply with this unjust law,” as it violates the Catholic conscience. Additionally, the church says that it is faced with a difficult decision — either comply and violate its faith or drop coverage for employees and suffer the consequences. The letter urges congregants to take action and to call Congress in an attempt to overturn the regulation.

Image

While there were some variations in the letter, as it was personalized by each Bishop, here’s the text that was sent out by the Bishop of Marquette (Michigan):

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:

I write to you concerning an alarming and serious matter that negatively impacts the Church in the United States directly, and that strikes at the fundamental right to religious liberty for all citizens of any faith. The federal government, which claims to be “of, by, and for the people,” has just been dealt a heavy blow to almost a quarter of those people — the Catholic population — and to the millions more who are served by the Catholic faithful.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced last week that almost all employers, including Catholic employers, will be forced to offer their employees’ health coverage that includes sterilization, abortion-inducing drugs, and contraception. Almost all health insurers will be forced to include those “services” in the health policies they write. And almost all individuals will be forced to buy that coverage as a part of their policies.

In so ruling, the Obama Administration has cast aside the First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States, denying to Catholics our Nation’s first and most fundamental freedom, that of religious liberty. And as a result, unless the rule is overturned, we Catholics will be compelled to either violate our consciences, or to drop health coverage for our employees (and suffer the penalties for doing so). The Obama Administration’s sole concession was to give our institutions one year to comply.

We cannot—we will not—comply with this unjust law. People of faith cannot be made second class citizens. We are already joined by our brothers and sisters of all faiths and many others of good will in this important effort to regain our religious freedom. Our parents and grandparents did not come to these shores to help build America’s cities and towns, its infrastructure and institutions, its enterprise and culture, only to have their posterity stripped of their God given rights. In generations past, the Church has always been able to count on the faithful to stand up and protect her sacred rights and duties. I hope and trust she can count on this generation of Catholics to do the same. Our children and grandchildren deserve nothing less.

And therefore, I would ask of you two things. First, as a community of faith we must commit ourselves to prayer and fasting that wisdom and justice may prevail, and religious liberty may be restored. Without God, we can do nothing; with God, nothing is impossible. Second, I would also recommend visiting http://www.usccb.org/conscience,to learn more about this severe assault on religious liberty, and how to contact Congress in support of legislation that would reverse the Obama Administration’s decision.

Sincerely yours in Christ,
+Alexander K. Sample

This is the latest development in the spat between the federal government and the Catholic Church. While contraception is a major problem dividing the two parties, other developments have added to the relational deterioration. Among the developments, the Department of Health and Human Services decided to end funding to the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops last year.

Image
Pope Benedict XVI (AP)

Rather than continuing to allocate money to a special program the bishops group oversaw to assist victims of modern-day slavery (i.e. human trafficking), the administration, instead, chose to give the funds to three non-Catholic groups. The bishops conference had refused to refer trafficking victims to receive contraceptives or abortions, so the American Civil Liberties Union sued and HHS decided to provide funds to groups that would refer women for these services.

Then there’s gay marriage — another contentious issue. The administration’s stance of not defending traditional marriage also contradicts Catholic teaching.

As for the health care regulation — a tenet that abortion-rights groups heralded when it was introduced last summer — there’s no telling how the situation will end, as the Church seems adamant about its refusal to comply.

Image

In September, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops called the regulation “an unprecedented attack on religious liberty.” In November, The Catholic Advocate PAC launched an attack campaign against the Obama administration as well. To these responses, Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said late last year that the Church’s “conscience thing” puts woman at risk (yes, she’s a Catholic).

In the end, there will be dire results, it seems, should the administration proceed as planned.

If this passes part of our tithing will go towards LDS employees healthcare costs for abortion (I doubt any would us it). This is satanic and unconstitutional. The government can not appropriate church tithing funds!

Unfortunately when we use force to make our neighbors do what we think they should (welfare, non-violent morality, aggressive foreign policy, etc) we create and unleash a beast that our neighbors can use against us to not allow welfare or morality as we desire to live them.

If we give wicked men power over us through government institutions, what do we expect to happen?

Yeah, that does seem awfully familiar. In fact, it seems like this sort of pattern happened over and over in that book...

One wonders why the righteous people never figured out that the only solution is to give MORE power to the king so he could solve all their problems and protect them from stubbing their toes.

Beck: ‘Wake Up’ & Join Catholics in Fight Against Contraceptive Mandate

Posted on January 30, 2012 at 12:50pm by Billy Hallowell

This morning, Glenn Beck tackled some of the biggest religious issues of the day. Among them, he covered a monumental debate that’s heating up between the Catholic Church and the Obama administration. The division, as you likely know, is over an impending federal mandate that religious groups cover abortion-inducing drugs and birth control free-of-charge.

“What the Obama admin is asking Catholics to do is to violate what they believe is morally right,” Beck said. “I urge you that, if you are a Catholic, to read this…search this story out, read it and then get involved.”

But Beck’s call for engagement went beyond simply calling Catholics to take a stand. He also encouraged people of all faiths to recognize the issue’s importance, urging them to come together to “assist the Catholics in everything they are doing right now.”

“Nobody’s asking anybody to change their theology or to have doctrinal debates,” Beck continued. “This is about our liberty and our religious liberty to be specific.”

Catholic League president Bill Donohue joined Beck on-air to discuss his take on the matter. Of particular note, Donohue mentioned the rare collaboration he’s seeing between Catholics of all stripes on this issue of the contraceptive mandate.

“I’ve been doing this job in the Catholic League for about two decades and never have I seen greater resolve on the part of Catholics,” he said. “Even liberals who don’t normally get along with conservatives are coming together on this.”

Donohue also had some tough words for the president and his administration.

“I have never seen an administration as aggressive to stamp out religious liberty as the Obama administration,” he said. ”Obama has created a nightmare and why he’s doing it in an election year, I have not a clue.”

Watch this portion of the discussion, below:

http://www.theblaze.com/stories/beck-wa ... e-mandate/

“It is a full assault from every direction. We have got to wake up,” Beck proclaimed.”
Watch the second portion of the discussion, below, to hear Donohue and Beck further describe what can be done to offer support to Catholics:

The government will then attack tax exempt status; but I agree, we should support the Catholics, but I'll do it through donations through the true church. If, the Prophet decides to support the Catholics in this matter, than my support will be there. Just like the gay marriage thing in California. There has to be a revolution, but revolutions need not be violent! There has to be a cleansing, a great division, polarizing is the term used by the media the tares must be bundled, prophecy must happen!

"We" must be prepared!

I was thinking more along the lines of "mighty prayer" in their behalf. God is a whole lot more powerful than money or anything it can buy.

Bozell to Network News Chiefs: You Must Cover the Obama Administration's Assault on Religious Freedom
February 06, 2012 13:58 ET

On Monday, MRC President Brent Bozell sent the following letter to the Presidents of the news divisions of ABC, CBS and NBC, and to the President of CNN:

The broadcast and cable television networks need to report the current, unprecedented assault against freedom of religion in this country, as well as the millions of Americans who would be left out in the cold by the Obama administration if it does not rescind HHS’s recently issued insurance mandate requiring contraceptive coverage. As our statistics and analysis below outline, they are not, and it’s a glaring double standard.

First, allow us to offer perspective on whom this new mandate affects. There are more than 65 million Catholics in the United States. Collectively, they operate more than 7,000 Catholic schools to educate children of all faiths and backgrounds. They also manage hundreds of health care facilities. In fact, one in six patients in the United States is cared for in a Catholic hospital.

All of these institutions and countless other Catholic-run charities will be forced to close their doors – or forfeit their most fundamental and deeply held religious beliefs if the Obama administration’s new mandate is not rescinded. The mandate forces these religious institutions to provide insurance covering sterilizations, abortion-causing drugs and artificial contraceptives, all of which fly in the face of Catholic teaching.

Yet to date, the broadcast networks have nearly ignored it. In contrast, in reaction to a decision that would affect vastly fewer potential patients, the networks pounced on the Susan G. Komen Foundation's decision (now overturned) to cease a measly $480,000 in a grant to Planned Parenthood, the country's largest abortion provider.

Since the mandate was finalized on January 20, 2012:

• ABC and NBC waited 16 days to cover the anti-Catholic ruling, finally citing the new rule on “This Week” and “Meet the Press” on February 5.

• CBS waited 10 days to mention it on “This Morning” and provided no subsequent coverage.

• CNN briefly mentioned the rule when it was announced on January 20th, then didn’t bother to mention it again for 10 days.

That stands in sharp contrast to the decision of the private Komen Foundation, when these same networks almost instantly piled on with publicity that helped fill Planned Parenthood's coffers and added to the pressure that forced Komen to reverse.

In fact, as of February 5th, ABC, CBS and NBC covered the Komen controversy six times more than the anti-Catholic HHS law.

New York Archbishop Timothy Dolan has said this new law “is as much an attack on access to health care as on religious freedom” and bishops across the country have issued the strongest letters in memory condemning this assault on religious liberty. Indeed, non-Catholic institutions across the country have joined the Catholic Church in condemning the administration, so you have no lack of experts and interviewees to discuss this outrage on-air.

The double standard is clear for all to see. You are ignoring the attack on the freedom of religion by the Obama administration, but coming to the aid of Planned Parenthood because you agree with them.

Your network must cover the administration’s insurance mandate accurately and comprehensively for what it is – an unprecedented assault against religion and a devastating blow to the millions of American school children, sick, elderly and poor of all religious faiths that are served by these Catholic institutions. If you refuse, and limit your networks to reporting about the Komen Foundation’s decision to pull funding from Planned Parenthood, then you cannot be seen as anything but an anti-Catholic, pro-abortion advocate.

Report both sides.

Sincerely,

L. Brent Bozell III

Great to see the Catholic Church taking this firm stand:

In so ruling, the Obama Administration has cast aside the First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States, denying to Catholics our Nation’s first and most fundamental freedom, that of religious liberty. And as a result, unless the rule is overturned, we Catholics will be compelled to either violate our consciences, or to drop health coverage for our employees (and suffer the penalties for doing so). The Obama Administration’s sole concession was to give our institutions one year to comply.

We cannot—we will not—comply with this unjust law.

Hurray for the Catholics! I hope the LDS will also take this stand!
of course, it might close BYU since it is a university...

The buck has to stop somewhere. If the LDS's allow this to be enacted, then soon after Bishops will have to perform gay marriages. In other words, we must stand against anything that would be offensive to our beliefs and our Savior. Afterall, if we believe in Him we believe in His word, right?

Better start doing something folks....these things are going to become Constitutional by way of TREATY. (Article 2 Section 2) Keep an eye out for International Law to move in and have a bearing on this.... International treaties become US law....the LDS church, and all others will be forced by treaty to accept this garbage, along with gay marriage, and much worse. There is a NATO treaty that pretty much says children cannot be baptized, or taught to pay tithing, or take part in any religious rites until they are 18...due to forced 'mental duress'. They are giving it a dry run right now against the Church of Scientology.....why? Because nobody cares about them. However, if they can get precedent with that case....it will be used against all churches.
These socialists are schooled in the Constitution for one reason only....to find loopholes. There aren't many in the original with the 12 Amendments by the founders, but the 13th - 27th Amendments have created plenty of new ones for them.

Anybody paying attention to the gay marriage law being passed in WA? Have you even heard of it? The churches have been silenced on this.....using a hate crime threat. http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/02/ ... 9E20120202 This will change the definition of marriage..not to mention they will appeal to a FEDERAL court...which sets federal precedent in a State matter....like the Chicago gun ruling.

Thanks for the heads-up UPBull.
Here's another challenge to the LDS Church in particular -- from Bloomberg News.

First they came for the Catholics and the Church of Scientology, then they came for the... you guessed it:

Bloomberg Report Takes Aim At Mormon Church For Online Gun Sales

“One would think that a church would feel a special obligation to make sure that they weren't fueling a black market for a particularly deadly form of commerce,” a source involved in the report says.

McKay Coppins

(Reuters / ANDREW BURTON)

Posted Feb 6, 2012 1:40pm EST

The Mormon Church owns one of the most active and unregulated gun sale portals on the web, according to a national investigation released by the New York City Mayor's office.

The website in question is KSL.com, the online hub for Utah's NBC affiliate and sister radio station, which are both owned and operated by the for-profit arm of the Mormon Church.
In addition to local news, KSL.com produces a popular classifieds section that reaches millions of users well beyond Utah.

The LDS connection drew little notice when Mayor Michael Bloomberg, a leading financier of the gun control movement, published the report in December, but an official involved with Bloomberg's investigation is calling out the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for putting "profits over principle."

"A church, like any other organization, has the right to raise money," said the person, who requested anonymity because he was not authorized to speak for the mayor. "But one would think that a church would feel a special obligation to make sure that they weren't fueling a black market for a particularly deadly form of commerce."

According to the Bloomberg report, KSL.com had the third-most active gun listings of any site on the web during a 100-day period last year (2,713), coming in behind only large specialty firearm sites Gunlistings.org, and Armslist.com, and beating out even Craigslist.

But the real problem isn't the volume, the report's authors say; it's the unregulated nature of KSL.com. While other classifieds sites require users to deal only on their sites with registered and confirmed accounts, KSL makes it easy for buyers and sellers to deal behind closed doors.

From the report:

[On KSL.com] sellers frequently list their contact email and phone number, which are openly displayed on the ad. This feature makes it easy for buyers to contact sellers and arrange to buy a firearm without identifying themselves – a feature that is particularly attractive to unscrupulous purchasers who do not want their purchases detected or recorded. And the website allows visitors to search for items being sold by private individuals who, in contrast to licensed dealers, are not required to conduct background checks.

Brett Atkinson, general manager of the site, insisted that KSL is a "responsible corporate citizen" that cooperates with law enforcement, and "frequently reviews its policies and procedures."

But its own internal reviews have yielded little change in its approach to gun ads--even as local police have raised concerns.

According to an article published last March in the Deseret News, which is also owned by the Mormon church, KSL considered eliminating the firearm category from its site altogether, under pressure from state law enforcement. Ultimately, though, it decided to keep the gun ads, opting only to post a guide to gun sale laws more prominently on its homepage.

"The responsibility for the transaction is that of the parties involved," Atkinson said. "This is just like any other transaction, a vehicle, a lawnmower, a bicycle."

But the person involved with the Bloomberg investigation said KSL and the Mormon church should set a higher bar for gun ads.

"The fact that they have looked into this makes it clear that they understand they have a problem, he said. "If they have essentially decided to press on without taking effective action, it seems they've made a choice to put profits over principle."

He continued: "If you're going to [facilitate sales] for something deadly, you have an obligation to make sure it's done legally and appropriately," the person said. "Just throwing up your hands and saying, 'We're not willing to give up this profit center' is unacceptable, and particularly so when it comes from a religious organization."

Wouldn't it be better if the power to do this simply didn't exist? For example, what if government got out of the business of marriage completely? If they did it would be up to couples to determine the details of their agreement, and for churches to decide on their own standards.

What concerns me most is that powers given to the government always seem to be twisted for evil. We push for clear definitions of marriage to prevent homosexual unions, and the same power granted to the government to do that is likely to be turned back on us.

The history of government involvement in marriage is a history of significant harm. Early marriage license law in many places was meant to prevent marriages between people of different races, but that perhaps pales in comparison to the laws against polygamy that were effectively used to break down families, communities, local governments, and even systems of trade. It was a great tool to overthrow the predominantly LDS government in early Utah on local and state levels.

Not that I agree with government laws supporting homosexual marriage, since I don't agree with government being involved in marriage in the first place. The only problem I see with using government to fight homosexual marriage is that the same institutions and legal foundations can be turned against us and do just what is described above.

This is a good example of the "gun in the room" analogy. If you support the gun in the room, and grab it and use it against your neighbors, then you strengthen a system that can later be controlled by enemies and used against you.

It's better not to have a gun in the room.

Joseph Smith said: Joseph Fielding Smith, Conference Report, October 1936, p.61
The Prophet Joseph Smith once said: "The Saints can testify whether I am willing to lay down my life for my brethren. If it has been demonstrated that I have been willing to die for a Mormon, I am able to declare before Heaven that I am just as ready to die in defense of the rights of a Presbyterian, a Baptist, or a good man in any other denomination, for the same principle that would trample upon the rights of the Latter-day Saints would trample upon the rights of the Roman Catholics or upon any other denominations that may be unpopular and too weak to defend themselves."
To say that you will leave it up to the LDS church to do your bidding is a really comfortable position to take on a subject that could take away our right to worship freely.

So, gr8ideas, you are saying that we are taking the armchair approach when we wonder what the church will do. Instead, we should be out there doing what we can to help. Excellent point.

Beck Announces ‘We Are All Catholics Now’ Movement to Stand Up for Religious Freedom

Posted on February 15, 2012 at 9:12am by Billy Hallowell

http://www.theblaze.com/stories/beck-announces-we-are-all-catholics-now-campaign-to-fight-contraception-mandate/

The controversy over the Obama administration’s contraception mandate is at a boiling point, as many Catholic leaders continue to view the president’s so-called “accommodation” as a failure to protect religious liberty.

Now, Glenn Beck is coming forward with a new movement called “We Are All Catholics Now.” The main goal of the initiative is to ask Americans to reach out to Congressional leaders (at the moment, Senators) to encourage the passage of legislation that would protect religious groups’ conscience rights.

Watch Beck discuss the effort on his radio show this morning:

The main push, Beck says, is to support the highway transportation bill, which will likely be voted upon this week. It will include an amendment – Blunt Conscience Protection Amendment – from Sen. Roy Blunt (R-MO) that would protect religious conscience rights. In the House, Rep. Jeff Fortenberry (R-Neb.) is working on companion legislation, though it may not be voted on for a few weeks.

Beck is encouraging individuals to get involved by calling their Senators and letting them know that “we are all Catholics now.” The issue at hand is not about contraception as it has been framed by many media outlets, he says. Instead, it is a religious freedom issue that hinges upon the separation of church and state’s mandate that the government not force churches to violate their values and principles.

Here are his directions for getting involved and making an impact:

Call the Capitol and speak with your Senator. The numbers are: 202.224.3121; 202.225.3121; the toll free numbers for the Capitol Switchboard include: 1-866-220-0044 1-877-851-6437, 1-800-833-6354, 1-888-355-3588, 1-866-808-0065, 1-877-762-8762, 1-800-862-5530.
Call the switchboard, ask to be connected to a Senator from your specific state (it will take two calls, one for each Senator).
Whoever answers:

1. Tell them that you want to tell the Senator to vote for the Blunt conscience protection amendment.
2. Ask them if they know how the Senator will vote on that amendment
3. Tell them you want to be contacted back about how he voted (be sure to ask for accountability — they hate it, but it makes them call you back).
4. When you call, be sure to tell them “We are all Catholics now”. This key phrase will let them know you are part of a larger, organized movement working in support of religious freedom.

You can read more about the movement at GlennBeck.com.

Obama administration tells Catholic bishops to listen to “enlightened” voices

Wednesday, Mar 7, 2012 at 3:18 PM EST

Cardinal Dolan of New York City was penned a letter saying that the Obama administration in which Dolan said the administration lectured the Catholic leaders on church teachings.

The Blaze reports:

With the distracting debate raging, Fluke has received the majority of the media attention surrounding the subject. New developments in the faith world, unfortunately, have gone unnoticed. Of particular note is a public letter that was penned on March 2 by Cardinal Timothy Dolan (also president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops).

The letter recaps a bizarre conversation U.S. Conference staff recently had with White House officials regarding the mandate. In fact, Dolan seems to allege that government officials lectured Catholic leaders about church teaching

What did Dolan say? He wrote:

At a recent meeting between staff of the bishops’ conference and the White House staff, our staff members asked directly whether the broader concerns of religious freedom—that is, revisiting the straight-jacketing mandates, or broadening the maligned exemption—are all off the table. They were informed that they are. So much for “working out the wrinkles.” Instead, they advised the bishops’ conference that we should listen to the “enlightened” voices of accommodation, such as the recent, hardly surprising yet terribly unfortunate editorial in America. The White House seems to think we bishops simply do not know or understand Catholic teaching and so, taking a cue from its own definition of religious freedom, now has nominated its own handpicked official Catholic teachers.

“Who’s going to know more about the Catholic Church – Catholic officials or the presidential administration,” Stu joked.

“Who’s going to know more about religion than a pack of atheists,” Glenn jokingly added.

Stu said that religious freedom according to this administration is simply making sure you are free from your religious teachings.

How Long Has Obama Been Fighting With Catholics? Consider the History

Posted on March 14, 2012 at 7:51am by Mike Opelka
http://www.theblaze.com/stories/how-long-has-obama-been-fighting-catholics-consider-the-history/

This week‘s announcement of the State Department’s placing the Vatican on a money laundering “Watch List” raised many questions about this Administration and what appears to be an ongoing battle with the Catholic Church. http://www.theblaze.com/stories/is-the-obama-admin-really-attacking-the-catholic-church-by-placing-the-vatican-on-a-financial-crimes-list/

Is this a new fight? Not really. The Democrats let Conservative Catholics know where they stood back in 2008. http://www.ncregister.com/blog/obama_shuns_catholic_prayers/

As the political party was preparing to gather in Denver in order to formalize the nomination of Barack Obama, Democrats chose not to invite the Catholic leader of the host city. Archbishop Charles Chaput (a staunch defender of the unborn and now presiding over the Philadelphia diocese) was not on the list of Catholics who would be leading prayers before and during the convention. There were some prominent, liberal Catholic names on the schedule: Sister Helen Prejean of “Dead Man Walking” fame and Social Justice lobbyist Sister Catherine Pinkerton got an invite.

Archbishop Chaput was eventually offered a couple of tickets to watch the convention from the cheap seats. According to news reports, the Archbishop did not attend the convention’s opening night and the Democrats reported he chose to reject their ticket offer. The reality: instead of sitting in the bleachers and watching Liberal Catholics from outside of his diocese deliver the invocation, Chaput and Dr. Alveda King led a pro-life prayer vigil at Martin Luther King Park in Denver.

But the snubbing didn’t end there. Catholic faith leaders were also absent from the president’s inauguration — they were not invited. Not a single member of the Catholic clergy was asked to be part of the swearing-in ceremonies. There were some faith leaders that were part of Obama’s inauguration to be sure. The Evangelical Pastor Rick Warren (who since has supported Catholics over the Obamacare / HHS Mandate), gay Episcopalian bishop Gene Robinson, and Protestant minister Joseph Lowery from the Southern Christian Leadership Conference were all part of the historic moment. Dr. Lowery delivered the emotional (if not very unique) invocation:

There was faith diversity on the podium at the Inauguration — just no Catholics.

Why were no conservative Catholics invited to the Democratic convention in Denver and not a single Catholic faith leader included in the President’s inauguration?

The reasons may go back to the summer of 2007 when then-Senator (and candidate) Barack Obama made a pledge to Planned Parenthood concerning his first act as President:

Obama pledged his allegiance to Planned Parenthood: “I‘m absolutely convinced that we’re not just gonna win an election, but more importantly, we’re gonna transform this nation.”

Fast-forward to April 29th of 2009 when the President was forced to address his unfulfilled promise to Planned Parenthood, stating that passing the Freedom of Choice Act was not the “highest legislative priority.” It is also worth noting that Senator Obama was a co-sponsor of the Senate version of the bill.

Rewind to 2008 and the Denver snub. After securing enough delegates to win his party’s nomination, Obama and the Democrats proceeded to build their platform for the coming election. In August of 2008, they were adding some teeth to their platform planks, especially in the pro-choice arena. According to a report by Austin Ruse of TheCatholicThing.org:

The new plank talks about supporting Roe in addition to supporting a distinct and potentially broader “woman’s right to choose safe and legal abortion, regardless of ability to pay.”

Mr. Ruse continues:

“it also calls for the adoption of the Freedom of Choice Act, a scurrilous measure co-sponsored by Senator Obama which may escape the notice of those who do not know its details. In it, you will find things like the requirement that government not “discriminate” against abortion in the “provision of benefits” or “information.” Remember Rust v. Sullivan? That was the case affirming the government’s right to favor childbirth over abortion in its funding decisions. The Democrat plank would overturn Rust and require that even programs for adoption and parenting promote abortion.”

With the major planks of the Obama election platform including aggressive pro-abortion language, it is doubtful that the Democrats would invite a staunch pro-lifer like Archbishop Chaput to speak or pray at their convention. Dems certainly wanted to avoid a situation like the one that happened in 2000 when their convention was held in Los Angeles. It was in L.A. that Catholic Cardinal Mahony was invited to address the Democrats and he delivered the following invocation:

“O God, we trust that you will keep us ever committed to protect the life and well-being of all people but especially unborn children, the sick and the elderly, those on skid row and those on death row.”

It would seem that the current squabbles between the Obama Administration and the Catholic Church are not something born after the passage of the “Affordable Care Act.” Just last week The Blaze reported on Cardinal Dolan’s letter that revealed the administration’s lectures to Catholic Bishops instructing them to listen to “enlightened” voices of accommodation. However, the roots of this fight go back at least five years to 2007 and they are ongoing. The big question is how much longer will it continue?

A hat tip to Michael Voris of “The Vortex.” Three years ago, he noted that President Obama has a history of fighting against the more conservative wing of the Roman Catholic Church.

In the video at the end of the article Glenn Beck recounts his visit to the Vatican, how conservative the Pope is, how he is "packing the court" by appointing many conservative Cardinals, and that the Vatican realize they are in a battle against evil. Also recounts a planned assassination of the Pope which was discovered.

JPMorgan Chase Closes Vatican Bank Account

Posted on March 19, 2012 at 9:50pm by Becket Adams

JPMorgan Chase is shutting down the Vatican’s bank account with its Milan branch due to a “lack of transparency,” according to Reuters.

“The Vatican bank, also known as the Institute for Works of Religion (IOR), is having its account phased out and closed by March 30,” Business Insider’s Julia La Roche reports, “because it apparently ‘failed to provide sufficient information on money transfers.’”

Needless to say, this is a setback for the Holy See as it attempts to qualify for Europe’s “white list” of financial institutions that meet all international regulatory standards on money-laundering and tax fraud.

“Italy’s leading financial daily Il Sole 24 Ore reported at the weekend that JP Morgan Chase in Milan had told the IOR of the closing of its account in a letter on Feb. 15,” Philip Pullella and Lisa Jucca of Reuters report. “The letter said the IOR‘s account in Italy’s business capital would gradually be phased out starting on March 16 and closed on March 30.”

Two things should be noted: first, this isn’t the first time the Vatican has been suspected of engaging in financial fraud. Second, something should be said about the timing of the bank’s decision.

As to the first point: The Vatican’s finances have been under scrutiny for some time. Regulators are investigating €1.5 billion that passed through the Vatican’s Milan account. Investigators refer to this account as a “sweeping facility,” which means the account was emptied at the end of each day for an 18-months period and all funds were transferred to another IOR account in Germany, according to Il Sole 24 Ore.

Furthermore, the Vatican is still dealing with negative press it received in September, 2010, when investigators froze €23 million ($33 million) in funds in two Italian banks after opening an investigation into possible money-laundering scheme.

“The bank said it did nothing wrong and was just transferring funds between its own accounts. The money was released in June 2011 but Rome magistrates are continuing their probe,” Reuters reports.

Adding to the growing list of Vatican woes is the “Vatileaks” scandal, in which documents, including letters to Pope Benedict, were published by Italian media outlets.

“Some of the leaked documents appear to show a conflict among top Vatican officials about just how transparent the bank should be about dealings that took place before it enacted its new laws,” Reuters reports.

So JPMorgan is simply reacting to reasonable concerns over possible financial indiscretions, right?

This brings us to our second point, that is, the timing of the bank’s decision. True, the aforementioned concerns over the IOR’s finances have raised some eyebrows, but the Vatican has since responded.

For instance, last year the Vatican formally adopted internal laws to comply with international standards on financial crime and they now comply with the rules of the Paris-based Financial Action Task Force (FATF), according to Reuters.

Moreover, the IOR has created an internal Financial Information Authority (FIA) and has “committed to comply with international anti-money laundering standards and liaise with the group and law enforcement agencies,” according to the report.

Which brings us back to the question: why did JPMorgan decide that now was the time to “phase out” the account? Investigations haven’t presented any new information, the Vatican has enacted major reforms, and talk of money-laundering and tax fraud are still just allegations.

Perhaps JPMorgan chose to close the account after the U.S. State Department decided to include the Vatican on its “financial crimes” list.

“For the first time, the Vatican has found itself on the U.S. State Department’s list of potential money-launderers,” The Blaze’s Billy Hallowell reported last week.

“According to the State Department, the Vatican made the list because it is considered vulnerable to laundering and because it had recently put a program into place to prevent financial abuses,” he added.

But much like JPMorgan’s decision to close the Milan account, some found the timing of the State Department’s inclusion of the Vatican on its “financial crimes” list a little odd: “Clearly, there are issues of concern, but the Catholic Church is taking measures to address these elements.”

Were either of these decisions aimed at the Holy See’s finances really necessary?

Considering the fact that the Catholic Church is currently engaged in a culture war with the Obama administration (and the world at large), a few critics believe we are witnessing much more than a mere pursuit of “financial transparency.”
