Anyone who believes that the Russian govt. is putting out truth and honesty needs to have their head examined. Propaganda was perfected as an art by these communist thugs. There is no good guys vs bad guys in play here. It is wickedness vs wickedness. All the players have ulterior motives and they have nothing to do with freedom and liberty and God given rights. Satan is running the show here folks. He wants pain. The more the better. Deception abounds. Soon the whore and the beast will be leaving scenes of blood and carnage that rival the Nephite/Lamanite final battles. Until then the posturing continues. Don't get sucked into the propaganda.

Not necessarily truth. But more truth than our own U.S. whore-porate media. It's a sad day when it comes to that. (Of course they have their own motives and try and show all the warts they can that the U.S. is trying to hide.)

I think you'll change your mind that Russia has "perfected the art of propaganda" once you watch this:

More truth Bro? The communists who created and fund news organizations like RT are avowed anti-Christs. I dont know about you but I prefer to not trust any source that will try to deceive me any chance they can. Its sort of like many bitter apostates I have met. They could talk circles around you and I concerning sacred doctrines like calling and election and second anointing and on and on. However their intent is to deceive and they will use any means available to them to do just that.

I am specifically talking about the teachings of Marx and Engels and their disciples that have taken hold upon so many nations and peoples in this world. They were the modern days Korihors and Sherems and Nehors. God holds no place in a society run by men who seek to inflict their wicked wills upon all around them. They are Satanic in their core belief systems. The article below illustrates that effectively.

http://www.scribd.com/doc/31067286/Marx ... -Wurmbrand" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I was reading Pres Bensons address he gave in conference back in 1961. He stated:

"Concerning the United States, the Lord revealed to his prophets that its greatest threat would be a vast, world wide secret combination which would not only threaten the United States but seek to overthrow the freedom of all lands, nations, and countries.

In connection with the attack on the united States, the Lord told his prophet there would be an attempt to overthrow the country by destroying the constitution. Joseph Smith predicted that the time would come when the constitution would hang, as it were, by a thread, and at that time this people will step forward and save it from threatened destruction.

It is my conviction that the Elders of Israel widely spread over the nation, will at that crucial time successfully rally the righteous of our country and provide the necessary balance of strength to save the institutions of constitutional government.

The prophets in our day have continually warned us of these internal threats- that our greatest threat from socialistic communism lies within our country. .. As the First Presidency pointed out in a statement in 1936, if we continue to uphold communism by not making it treasonable, our land shall be destroyed, for the Lord has said that whatsoever nation shall uphold such secret combinations to get power and gain until they spread over the nation- behold, they shall be destroyed. The Lord has declared that before the second coming of Christ, it will be necessary to destroy the secret works of darkness in order to preserve the land of Zion-The Americas. The world wide secret conspiracy which has risen up in our day to fulfill these prophesies is easily identified."

As I reiterated before is Assad or Putin or Obama or ___ the good guys in this battle for the souls of men? Do their fruits display a love for individual agency and liberty? No. They are all tools of the adversary used to inflict war and pain upon those who suffer because of their wicked ways. I trust the Prophets and the Spirit to tell me the truth. Everyone else out there is highly suspect and can lead us astray if we place our trust in them.

I'm not arguing about who is worse than the other. Or about the socialistic threat to our nation. But more truth about U.S. intentions in the middle east? Yes. More truth about U.S. big banks? Yes. I'm amazed to read/hear things that would NEVER NEVER NEVER in a million years be reported in our lamestream media. Doesn't mean I trust them as far as I can throw them, though.

I understand your point Bro. Sadly, the Fourth Estate has become the fifth column, colluding with the powers that be in a culture of deception that subverts the truth. I just caution the motives behind any of these so called news organizations, be they MSM or independent. They all have agendas that they are actively pursuing which may not be as it is represented.

IMO, I believe they want to take as many jabs they can (whether their facts may be true or even outright lies) at the United States. In a way it's like the pot calling the kettle black. In every news outlet, whether that be Fox, MSNBC, CNN, local news, al jezeera, and RT will have some truths. We just need to be able to weed out the lies and deceptions and keep the truths wherever we find them.

If I might add.....I think their goal right now is the final destruction of the US. This must occur within. So its in their best interest right now to get as much cold hard truth about crimes of government out to the people to completely fracture the belief system in the government. Our own media is also participating. Its like the 60 minutes episode on Congressional insider trading....when its been going on for decades. Why now?

Look at it in terms of trying to get church members to go apostate and lose faith in leadership......what's the best tactic? Truth. Just not all the truth. Bring up all the garbage and just leave off the reminders that church leadership is still supported by the Spirit.

Of course we don't have that with government....and the government will fail (has failed)....or rather the people have failed and thus their representatives. But methodology is the same.

Israel and Syria brace for regional war between mid-Dec. 2011 and mid-Jan 2012

DEBKAfile Exclusive Report December 5, 2011, 2:41 PM (GMT+02:00)

The actions and words of Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and Syrian ruler Bashar Assad in the last 72 hours indicate they are poised for a regional war, including an attack on Iran, for some time between December 2011 and January 2012.

In their different ways, both have posted road signs to the fast-approaching conflict as DEBKAfile's Middle East sources disclose:

1. Saturday, Dec. 3, Syria staged a large-scale military exercise in the eastern town of Palmyra, which was interpreted by Western and Israeli pundits as notice to its neighbors, primarily Turkey and Israel, that the uprising against the Assad regime had not fractured its sophisticated missile capabilities.

DEBKAfile's military sources advise attaching more credibility to the official Damascus statement of Sunday, Dec. 4: "The Syrian army has staged a live-fire drill in the eastern part of the country under war-like circumstances with the aim of testing its missile weaponry in confronting any attack."

Videotapes of the exercise, briefly carried on the Internet early Monday before they were removed by an unseen hand, support this statement. They showed a four-stage exercise, in which missile fire was a minor feature. Its focus was on the massive firing of self-propelled 120mm cannon, brigade-strength practice of 600mm and 300mm multiple launch rocket systems (MLRS), offensive movements of Syrian armored brigades backed by ground-to-ground missiles with short 150-200 kilometer ranges. They drilled tactics for repelling enemy reinforcements rushed to combat arenas.

All this added up to is an impressive Syrian demonstration of its ability to ward off an attack on Syrian soil by turning a defensive array into an offensive push for taking the battle over into the aggressor's territory, whether the Turkish or Israeli armies or a combined Arab League force backed by NATO.

2. Israel made its rejoinder to the Syrian war message 24 hours later.

Addressing a ceremony honoring the memory of for Israel's founding father David Ben-Gurion, Netanyahu recalled how 63 years ago, Ben-Gurion declared the foundation of the State of Israel in defiance of pressures from most of Western leaders and a majority of his own party. They warned him that he would trigger a combined Arab attack to destroy the fledgling state just three years after the end of World War II.

But fortunately for us, said the prime minister, Ben-Gurion stood up to the pressure and went through with his decision, otherwise Israel would not be here today.

"There are times," said Netanyahu, "when a decision may carry a heavy price, but the price for not deciding would be heavier."

"I want to believe," he said, "we will always have the courage and resolve for the right decisions to safeguard our future and security."

Although he did not mention Iran, it was not hard to infer that the prime minister was referring to a decision to exercise Israel's military option against Iran's nuclear program in the face of crushing pressure from Washington and insistent advice of certain Israeli security veterans.

Defense minister Ehud Barak, who was standing behind the prime minister's shoulder, was as tense as a coiled spring.

3. Six hours later, Netanyahu dropped a bombshell on the domestic political scene: He announced his Likud party would hold elections, including primaries, before January 31, 2012 - two years before schedule and a year before Israel's next general election. As head of one of the most stable and long-lived coalition governments ever to have ruled Israel, he is under no pressing domestic need of a demonstration of leadership at this time.

4. In the last two weeks, the Netanyahu government has been subjected to acerbic criticism on the part of one Obama administration official after another. They have presented Israel as having fallen into the hands of right-wing extremists who are engaged in a mad race to suppress the judiciary and diminish the civil rights of women and children – not to mention Palestinians.

Secretary of State of Hillary Clinton went to unimaginable lengths when she likened Israel to Iran because fringe ultraorthodox group's in a couple of suburbs in Jerusalem and Bnei Brak were fighting for gender segregation on public transport against the government and the courts.

She was clearly aiming to undermine the Netanyahu government's democratic credentials - and therefore his moral legitimacy - for going to war to halt Iran's attainment of a nuclear weapon.

4. The unusually powerful US and Russian naval buildups in the waters around Syria and Iran.

Washington sought in late November to give the impression that the George H.W. Bush Carrier Strike Group was anchored off Marseilles, when it was spotted in the eastern Mediterranean opposite Syria.

Moscow then rushed to Syria's defense by airlifting 72 anti-ship Yakhont missiles (Western-coded SSN-26) to Damascus. These water-skimming weapons can hit naval targets at a distance of 300 kilometers.

After that the Bush, whose freedom to approach Syrian or Lebanese shores, had been curtailed by the new weapon reaching Syria, departed to an unknown destination, while the USS Carl Vinson strike group took up position opposite Iran.

Moscow is also playing hide and seek with its only air carrier Admiral Kuznetsov. It was announced that the vessel would set sail for the Mediterranean on Dec. 6. But on Nov. 25, it was sighted passing Malta and chugging past Cyprus four days later on its way to join the flotilla of three Russian guided missile destroyers already anchored off Syria.

Neither the United States nor Russia would have concentrated two powerful fleets in the proximity of Syria and Iran unless they were certain a military conflagration was imminent. While any of the prime movers, Washington, Moscow, Tehran, Israel or Bashar Assad, may at the last moment step back from the brink of a regional war, at the moment, there is no sign of this happening. :(

I decided to pull out my old copy of Crowthers "Prophecy Key to the Future" book yesterday old man and it sure seems like we are getting perilously close to the fulfillment of his chapters on internal wars and the collapse of the US Govt along with world war to be poured out upon all nations and the fulfillment of the Lord using the wicked to punish the wicked thru these wars.

The only good thing about that is next up after all that mess comes the establishment of the political Kingdom of God and the establishment of the New Jerusalem. Some wonderful prophesies and visions concerning those events from many of the early Brethren.

Here's a delightful thought from Heber C Kimball: "You will be blessed, and you will see the day when Presidents Young, Kimball, and Wells, and the Twelve Apostles will be in Jackson County Mo laying out your inheritances. In the flesh? Of course! We should look well without being in the flesh! We shall be there in the flesh, and all our enemies can't prevent it. Brother Wells you may write that: You will be there, and Willard will be there, and also Jedediah, and Joseph, and Hyrum, and David , and Parley: and the day will be when I will see those men in the general assembly of the Church of the First-Born, in the great council of God in Jerusalem, too."

As old and decrepit as you are you may still see some of that come to fruition. What amazing times we live in.

InfoWarrior82, the ultimate goal of Lucifer is to defeat God in the war that started in the pre-earth life.

Step One: Destroy this nation. The USA and its Constitution have been a bastion and example of freedom since its conception. Lately, not so much. :( The LDGs have been working on the destruction of the Constitution for at least a century. Still we are envied by the down trodden of the world and must be destroyed to move to step two. How do you destroy a republic? Economic collapse, riots/anarchy, and war? Yes but you need to prepare the ground first. Sow distrust, real or imagined both work, in the minds of the public toward every institution of trust in the country. Distrust of the government, finance, universities, churches, military, etc. Lies and half-truths work very well here. This is where the MSM, RT Press TV come in. With the onslaught of negativity toward every division of government and private life then when the ‘Economic collapse, riots/anarchy, and war’ happens, the public/sheeple will be more than willing to replace our ‘failed capitalism’ and ‘deadlocked, do nothing government’ with ‘social justice’ and ‘democracy’.

Step Two: Destroy the current world order. What we got now is a heck of a lot better than the one being planned for us, world government. Europe is already ahead of us in 'step one'. The EU has maybe months to survive. The rest of the world is close behind. We’re soon to follow.

Step Three: Create enough fear and hunger so that the sheeple of the world will accept the world government ‘solution’ being planned. What would cause so much fear and hunger for even Americans to accept a world government? A billion or two dying from a World War and the resultant starvation and disease that would follow the disruption of food production and distribution will do the trick. We will be convinced that ‘the solution’ will be short term. “We promise that freedom will slowly be restored as soon as the emergency is over”. Some restriction on speech, gun rights, even religion will be necessary for the good of the ‘collective’. Some may even need to be sacrificed for the better of the world. Of course those who refuse will have to be ‘reeducated’ until they see the light.

The destruction of America and the nation of Israel are keys to Lucifer winning the War in heaven. They will both be made scape goats. America for its destruction of the dollar and attacks on other countries. Same goes for Israel. IMO Israel is being set up to start the coming World War by giving them a now win situation. Take out Iran’s nukes or wait for them to use it on Tel Aviv either way they lose and are the scape goat. Sometime after WW III the armies of Gog and his allies attack Israel beginning the War of Armageddon. We know the rest of that story.

So, InfoWarrior82, Russia Times and Press TV along with the rest of the MSM are helping to prepare the ground for the coming ‘solution’. Half-truths and spin are harder to tell from the truth and is being used by Lucifer and his minions to demoralize this nation and turn the people against the institution we once held dear. Patriotism is blasé now even ridiculed. Our history has been changed and hidden from us. Our children don’t know our history and the heroes who founded our nation. This was no accident.

How can we as a people save something we detest? That is what they are up to. If we hate our country then why bother with an antiquated constitution. It don’t work so let’s replace it. THAT’S what our enemies are up to, InfoWarrior, and reading many posts on this forum has convinced me they are doing a darn good job of it. :(

OMD, this ^^^^

And by the way, I think you're confused! You seem to think (correct me if I'm wrong) "Well gee... this person doesn't like Fox News... hmm.. he doesn't trust Glenn Beck... thinks big banks are corrupt... doesn't like the Federal Reserve... thinks our government has been hijacked by financial oligarchs... thinks that RT might even be telling the truth about something the USA is doing... THIS PERSON MUST HATE THE USA AND OUR CONSTITUTION!" Nononononononononononono! I completely understand that the United States is the feather in lucifer's cap. I understand that in order for the people to give up their constitution and liberties, they need to be convinced that it doesn't work. First they corrupt the system through using CORPORATISM to instill disdain and distrust in the free market and capitalism (while enriching themselves), next is to push socialism while driving up debt and austerity measures as the answer to get a reaction. Our country has lung cancer and many want to cut out the entire lungs instead of cutting out the cancer. These people are being used as useful tools or idiots. I don't consider myself as one of those people. You also mentioned Europe imploding... well can you tell me what system is going to replace what they have? Hint: It has something to do with the IMF.

OMD
I don't agree that this system is a heck of alot better. Better for whom? Maybe for US Citizen . . . right now . . . but the scriptures are plain on this. Babylon the Great is just as evil as the red scarlet beast that replaces her. The beast may be more vicious, but it is just as evil. We ought not try to defend Babylon, or have hope in Babylon. Both have done wrong and both will face the justice of the Lord.

I will say this. RT does say true things I think. But at what cost? They wish to foment revolution. Revolution may come, but it is evil to foment it if you are looking to destroy freedom, and that's what Russia wants . . . to destroy freedom. They may parrot and angle that they are for Ron Paul, and Alex Jones may lick Max Kaiser's feet but it is a big lie. Who knows? They just rejected Russia United at the ballot box, maybe Russians are getting fed up, but I don't count Putin down, I think he's up to something. He's ruthless enough to just take it at the barrel of a gun.

US diplomatic bid to defuse Syrian trigger for regional war

DEBKAfile Exclusive Report December 7, 2011, 12:17 PM (GMT+02:00)

Tuesday, Dec. 6, the US, France and Britain went into concerted diplomatic action to contain the Syrian crisis before it detonated a regional conflict and deteriorated into civil strife more horrendous and dangerous than the Iraq war. At the same time, Syria and its neighbors have sharply intensified their war preparations, fully expecting diplomacy to fail. DEBKAfile’s military and Washington sources report their pessimism emanates from the conviction in the region that even if Bashar Assad and his family pretend to cooperate, they will fight to the last Syrian before they actually relax their grip on government.

The US and allies launched their bid for a negotiated end to the Syrian impasse launched last week. A number of Western agents infiltrated Syria from Lebanon and Jordan and entered the embattled cities of Homs, Hama and Idlib in the north, Deir al-Zour and Abu Kemal in the east and Daraa in the south. Their mission was to unite the deeply divided opposition factions and local rebels into a coherent front. The Assad regime chose to turn a blind eye.

Building on that groundwork, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton called together Tuesday, Dec. 6, in Geneva the leaders of Syrian opposition groups operating in different European capitals, as well as Turkey, Lebanon and Jordan, and urged them to overcome their differences and back the US-Western peace initiative.

She explained, our sources disclosed, that the administration had resolved to up the diplomatic, economic and military pressure on Bashar Assad. President Barack Obama, Clinton announced, had personally instructed all parts of the American administration to starting referring to his regime as the “Assad gang.”

On Wednesday, Dec. 7, Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs Jeffrey Feltman was due in Beirut to set up a base of operations there after coordinating the American step with Israel's government and military leaders in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv.

As part of the drive for negotiations, Washington and Paris returned their ambassadors to Damascus after an absence of six weeks. Their task is to open direct channels to President Assad and sound him out on their proposal for him to accept an orderly transition of power in order to avert a regional war and save his country from plunging further in to civil strife.

The US and French Presidents Obama and Sarkozy and British Prime Minister David Cameron are of one mind about pursuing diplomacy for ending Assad's rule even though not the slightest sign of willingness to cooperate has come from the presidential palace in Damascus. Even the Arab League's proposal to send monitors into Syria met with conditions that were deemed tantamount to a rejection.

This initiative has had no effect on the hectic military preparations going forward in the region in anticipation of an imminent outbreak of armed hostilities.

The Syrian armed forces staged a large-scale war game Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 3-4, in the eastern part of the country.

Israel Defense Forces reciprocated by organizing an extensive exercise of the 51st Battalion of the Golan Brigade on the Golan border with Syria Tuesday, Dec. 6.

Both practiced tactics for repelling invading foreign forces and moving the battle into enemy territory.

The Syrian security and military leadership turned out in full to observe the Syrian armed forces' performance, while on the Israeli side, Defense Minister Ehud Barak and IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Benny Gantz were in conspicuous attendance – as were TV cameras on both sides of the border.

The Israeli army spokesman uncharacteristically made a point of highlighting a visit Minister for Home Front Defense Matan Vilnai paid Tuesday to the Haifa oil refineries to inspect Israel's emergency fuel reserve. He announced that a battery of the home-made anti-missile Iron Dome may be posted at the refineries.

Tuesday also saw unusual activity in the Lebanese capital: Hizballah's Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah emerged from his bunker after three and-a-half years to declare before a Shiite audience assembled for the Ashura ceremonies that Hizballah’s support for Bashar Assad is absolute.

In his capacity has leader of Iran's Lebanese Shiite surrogate, he pledged that Hizballah would provide the regime in Damascus with all the help it required.

Qatar builds Sunni intervention force of Libyan, Iraqi terrorists against Assad

DEBKAfile Exclusive Report December 27, 2011, 12:00 PM (GMT+02:00)

The Qatar oil emirate, encouraged by its successful participation in the campaign to overthrow Libya's Muammar Qaddafi, has established a Sunni Arab intervention force to expedite the drive for Syrian President Bashar Assad's ouster, DEBKAfile's military sources report. The new highly mobile force boosts the anti-Assad Free Syrian Army, whose numbers have jumped to 20,000 fighters, armed and funded by Qatar and now forming into military battalions and brigades at their bases in Turkey.

When they saw the Syrian massacre continuing unabated this month, the Qatari and Saudi rulers approved a crash program for the Qatari chief of staff Maj.-Gen Hamas Ali al-Attiya to weld this mobile intervention Sunni Muslim force out of al Qaeda linked-operatives for rapid deployment on the Turkish-Syrian border.

A force of 2,500 has been recruited up until now, our sources report. The hard core is made up of 1,000 members of the Islamic Fighting Group in Libya-IFGL, which fought Qaddafi, and 1,000 operatives of the Ansar al-Sunna, the Iraqi Islamists which carried out 15 coordinated bomb attacks in Baghdad last Thursday killing 72 people and injuring 200.

Qatar has just had them airlifted from Libya and Iraq to the southern Turkish town of Antakya (Antioch) in the border province of Hatay.

It is in this town of quarter-of-a- million inhabitants that the new Sunni force has located its command center and separate camps for the two main contingents to undergo intensive training for combat missions in the embattled Syrian towns and provinces of Idlib, Homs, Jabal al-Zawiya, scenes of the fiercest clashes between Syrian troops and rebels.

DEBKAfile also reveals that the man appointed top commander of the Sunni intervention force headquartered in Antioch is none other than Abdel Hakim Belhaj, whose militia last August seized control of Tripoli after it was captured from Qaddafi by NATO and Qatari forces.

He has picked his deputies - Al-Mahdi Hatari, former head of the Tripoli Brigade and loyal crony Kikli Adem.

Qatari officers have set up communication links between the Libyan and Iraqi camps and since last week are coordinating their operations with the Free Syrian Army.

This flurry of military activity is taking place under the watchful gaze of the Turkish military and its intelligence services but they are not interfering.

DEBKAfile's military and counter-terror analysts stress that the rise of a new Qatari-led Sunni Muslim rapid intervention force breaks fresh strategic ground with ramifications for the United and Israel as well as for the Gulf Arab countries, Syria, Libya and Iraq.

1. A year has gone by since the Arab Revolt first broke out in December 2010. Yet this is the first time a Sunni Muslim power has established an intervention force - one moreover which is composed almost entirely of fighting men drawn from the ranks of al Qaeda and its extremist Islamist affiliates and allies.

2. The new Sunni force, funded by the Persian Gulf oil states, is silently backed by the US and NATO members, with Turkey in the forefront of this support group. This means that the Sunni-Shiite divide is spiraling into overt conflict with Western support afforded to one side.

3. Despite finding itself increasingly isolated by its Arab neighbors, Tehran has so far not intervened directly in conflicts in which it owns an interest – such as Gulf Cooperation Council-GCC intervention against a Shiite-led uprising in Bahrain, and now Sunni militias and terrorists enlisted to battle the Allawite regime of Iran's closest ally, Bashar Assad in Damascus.

4. Iran's Lebanese proxy. Hizballah's Hassan Nasrallah, must also be feeling an uncomfortable draft coming from a Sunni fighting force near his strongholds and carrying out raids against his closest ally, Bashar Assad. He can't ignore the possibility of that force conducting similar excursions against his own Shiite militia.

5. Israel too must find cause for concern in the rise of a Sunni military intervention force capable of moving at high speed from one arena to another and made up almost entirely of Islamist terrorists. At some time, Qatar might decide to move this force to the Gaza Strip to fight Israel.

Israeli drone over Turkish-Syrian border. Battles in Syrian-Jordanian-Israeli border triangle
DEBKAfile Exclusive Report January 4, 2012, 11:48 AM (GMT+02:00)

Image
Israeli Eitan drone

Military tensions are building up on Syria's borders. Wednesday, Jan. 4, Turkish military sources reported sighting an Israeli Eitan (Heron) drone in the sky above the Turkish Hawk Brigade 14 stationed on the northern Syrian border at Kirikhan in the Hatay district of southern Turkey. The Israeli drone was said to have hovered over the encampment for four hours.

A request by local Turkish officers to fire anti-air missiles to down the Israeli Eitan went unanswered by the Turkish general staff until the drone was gone. According to the Turkish sources, two Turkish F-16 fighter jets were scrambled from the Diyarbakir 2nd Air Force Command Strike Center and stayed overhead as long as the Israeli drone was present.

DEBKAfile reports this is the first time Israeli UAV's have been reported monitoring events on the Turkish-Syrian border. On Dec. 16, our sources disclosed 21 Syrian Scud missile launchers had been stationed opposite Hatay province as a warning to Turkey, NATO and Arab forces to stay out of the Syrian uprising.

Then, on Dec. 27, our military sources reported that Qatar had organized and funded an airlift to Hatay of Libyan militia fighters under the command of former Abdelhakim Belhaj, ex-al Qaeda and commander of Islamic Fighting Group in Libya-IFG which seized control of Tripoli. He has established a command post in the Turkish town of Antakya (Antioch).

The Libyan and Free Syrian Army-FSA fighters are training together in Turkish military camps, the main one being the Hawk Brigade 14 over which the Israeli drone hovered. It is expected to be the main jumping off base for any foreign military intervention in Syria.

Across the border meanwhile, Syria continues its military buildup.

At the opposite end of Syria, the southern Horan province, fierce battles raged Tuesday, Jan. 4 between Syrian troops and mutineers of the 38th Mechanized Brigade, the bulk of which has gone over to the anti-Assad opposition. Both sides fighting with heavy T-72 tanks and artillery around Sida, a village in the Syrian-Jordanian-Israeli border triangle, suffered dozens of casualties.

The 38th Brigade belongs to the 7th Division which is stationed on the Syrian-Israeli border which cuts through the Golan. Sounds of gunfire were clearly heard in Israel. The brigade was the largest military unit to have deserted Bashar Assad's army in the ten-month popular uprising against his regime.

Defiance: Russia to Reportedly Deliver Combat Jets to Syria

Posted on January 23, 2012 at 6:31am by Billy Hallowell

MOSCOW (The Blaze/AP) — Russia has signed a contract to sell combat jets to Syria in a show of support for President Bashar Assad’s regime, a newspaper reported Monday.

The business daily Kommersant said, citing an identified source close to Russia’s Rosoboronexport state arms trader, that the $550-million deal envisages the delivery of 36 Yak-130 aircraft. A spokesman for Rosoboronexport refused to comment on the report.

If confirmed, the deal would mark an open defiance of international efforts to put pressure on Assad’s regime, which has faced broad condemnation for its brutal crackdown on an uprising. The U.N. says more than 5,400 people have died over 10 months. In recent months, the Blaze has covered the horrific reports coming out of the country.

Russia‘s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said last week that Moscow doesn’t consider it necessary to offer an explanation or excuses over suspicions that a Russian ship had delivered munitions to Syria despite an EU arms embargo.

Lavrov told a news conference that Russia was acting in full respect of international law and wouldn’t be guided by unilateral sanctions imposed by other nations.

He accused the West of turning a blind eye to attacks by opposition militants and supplies of weapons to the Syrian opposition from abroad and warned that Russia will block any attempt by the West to secure United Nations support for the use of force against Syria.

“If some intend to use force at all cost … we can hardly prevent that from happening,” Lavrov said at a news conference. “But let them do it at their own initiative on their own conscience. They won’t get any authorization from the U.N. Security Council.”

Russia has been a strong ally of Syria since Soviet times when the country was led by the president’s father Hafez Assad. It has supplied Syria with aircraft, missiles, tanks and other modern weapons.
The Yak-130 is a twin-engined combat trainer jet that can also be used to attack ground targets. The Russian air force has recently placed an order for 55 such jets.

Assad masses loyal troops in Damascus after he was warned of a military coup

DEBKAfile Exclusive Report January 30, 2012, 9:38 PM (GMT+02:00)

Image
President Bashar Assad supported by his brother and cousin

According to exclusive reports reaching DEBKAfile, President Bashar Assad Sunday, Jan. 30, pulled in the Syrian Republican Guard and the 4th armored divisions commanded by his brother Maher Assad from the northern rebel centers and over to Damascus. He ordered them into battle positions in the capital for the first time in the ten month uprising after receiving an intelligence tipoff that western powers had won over one of the armored division commanders posted in the capital and persuaded him to stage a coup d'etat to topple him.

The renegade general, whose identity is unknown, was reported to be planning to take advantage of the absence of the most trusted regime troops in trouble spots across the country to lead 300 tanks into the capital and seize power.

The conspirators were planning to make their move on the night of Monday Jan. 30 or early Tuesday Jan. 31, just before the UN Security Council was to convene in New York and air plans for him to step down. The conspirators would have presented its members with the accomplished fact of Assad's overthrow by the military.

The information passed to Assad, apparently from an external source, did not name the division commander who accepted this role from Western hands. If it turns out to be true, the scheme would strongly recall the US-led NATO-Qatari-Jordanian operation for the Libyan rebels to seize power in Libya by taking Tripoli by storm in the third week of August 2011.

Forewarned, the Syrian ruler is making every effort to ward off the threatened coup.

DEBKAfile's military sources report that, aside from the Republican Guard and 4th division which Assad recalled to the capital, present there too are the 1st, 3rd and 9th armored divisions.

The fight rebel forces put up at the gates of Damascus Monday night was perceived by the Assad regime as part of the coup conspiracy. Western and military sources described the combat as a search, arrest and kill operation to wipe out the last vestiges of resistance around the capital, rather than battles.

Monday night, the White House issued a statement saying the UN Security Council must not let the Syrian President Assad continue the violence.

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is scheduled to address the Council meeting Tuesday. She has urged the forum to act before the violence in Syria spills over and destabilizes its neighbors.

Moscow has made it very clear in recent weeks that it will on no account let the Assad regime go the way of Qaddafi. Russia is adamant about vetoing the Security Council motion the US and European powers are gathering Tuesday in New York to table in support of the Arab League transition plan for a national unity government to rise in Damascus within two months and implement Assad's handover of power to vice president Farouk a-Shara. A Russian bid to bring the opponents to the negotiating table failed after the main Syrian opposition party demanded that Assad step down first.

At least 27 people were killed Monday in the central city of Homs – which was heavily shelled again - the northern province of Idlib and southern province of Daraa, where the revolt against Assad began in mid-March. Another 41 deaths were reported Sunday. The Syrian regime stepped up the violence in the days before the Security Council session to quell resistance and demonstrate its grip on the country.

DEBKAfile reported earlier Monday, Jan. 30:

Ten months after the Syrian people launched an uprising against its ruler, Bashar Assad, if not yet safe in the saddle, has recovered the bulk of his army's support and his grip on most parts of the country.

Protesters have mostly been pushed into tight corners in the flashpoint towns and villages, especially in the north, hemmed in by troops and security forces loyal to the president.

Monday, Jan. 30, Syrian forces were close to purging the suburbs and villages around Damascus of rebel fighters. The operation began Sunday with 2,000 troops backed by tanks and armored personnel carriers. Six soldiers were killed when their vehicle blew up on a roadside bomb near Sahnaya, east of the capital.

The rebel Free Syrian Army and opposition groups continue to report heavy fighting in the Damascus area, and especially the international airport where they claim to have prevented Assad's wife and children from fleeing the country. However, military watchers do not confirm either the fighting or the Assad family's attempted flight.

While both sides spin propaganda, the extreme hyperbole of opposition claims attests to their hard straits and the Syrian president's success in weathering their efforts and the huge sacrifices in blood paid by the people (estimated at 8,000 dead and tens of thousands injured) to oust him.

Having got rid of the Arab League monitoring mission, which gave up in despair of halting the savage bloodbath, Assad will shrug off the Arab-Western backed motion put before the UN Security Council Tuesday, Jan. 30, calling on him to step down and hand power to his vice president Farouk a-Shara. He will treat it as yet another failed effort by the combined Arab-Western effort to topple his regime.

The conflict is not over. More ups and downs may still be to come and there are signs of sectarian war evolving. But for now, Assad's survival is of crucial relevance in seven Middle East arenas:

1. The Tehran-Damascus-Hizballah bloc is strengthened, joined most recently by Iraq;

2. Iran chalks up a first-class strategic achievement for counteracting the US and the Saudi-led Gulf Arab emirates' presentation of the Islamic regime as seriously weighed down under by the crushing burden of international sanctions imposed to halt its drive for a nuclear bomb.

3. Hizballah has won a chance to recover from the steep slide of its fortunes in Lebanon. The Pro-Iranian Lebanese Shiite group stands to regain the self-assurance which ebbed during Assad's hard times against massive dissidence, re-consolidate its bonds with Tehran, Damascus and Baghdad and rebuild its political clout in Beirut.

4. It is hard to calculate the enormous extent of the damage Saudi Arabia and Turkey have suffered from their colossal failure in Syria. The Palestinians too have not emerged unscathed.

Saudi Arabia, Qatar and their security agencies, which invested huge sums in the Syrian rebellion's removal of the Assad regime, were trounced by Syria's security and intelligence services and the resources Iran provided to keep Bashar Assad afloat.

The Arab League, which for the first time tried its hand at intervening in an Arab uprising by sending observers into Syrian trouble spots to cut down the violence, watched impotently as those observers ran for their lives. Assad for his part first accepted than ignored the League's peace plan.

Turkey, too, after indicating its military would step across the border to support the Syrian resistance and giving the FSA bases of operation, backed off for the sake of staying on good terms with Iran.

5. Russia and China have gained credibility in the Middle East and points against the United States by standing up for Assad and pledging their veto votes against any strong UN Security Council motions against him. Moscow's arms sales and naval support for the Assad regime and China's new military and economic accords with Persian Gulf emirates have had the effect of pushing the United States from center stage of the Arab Revolt, held in the Egyptian and Libyan revolutions, to the sidelines of Middle East action.

6. The Syrian ruler has confounded predictions by Israel's Defense Minister Ehud Barak that he can't last more than a few weeks. His survival and the cohesion of his armed forces have contributed to the tightening of the Iranian military noose around Israel.

The Syrian army was in sustained operation for almost a year without breaking and suffered only marginal defections. It is still in working shape with valuable experience under its belt in rapid deployment between battlefronts. Syria, Iran and Hizballah have streamlined the cooperation among their armies and their intelligence arms.

7. The Palestinian rivals, Fatah and Hamas, have again put the brakes on the on-again, off-again reconciliation after it was galvanized by Hamas' decision to create some distance between Iran and the embattled Syrian regime. Seeing Assad still in place, Hamas' Gaza prime minister Ismail Haniyeh will visit Tehran this week and Meshaal may delay his departure from the Syrian capital.
