60-80+ mph winds now forecast for Wasatch Front tonight

Postby Col. Flagg » Tue Nov 29, 2011 4:53 pm

Just wanted to get this little heads up out there to those living along the Wasatch Front...

http://forecast.weather.gov/wwamap/wwat ... 0statement
http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/slc/

...DAMAGING WINDS POSSIBLE WEDNESDAY NIGHT AND THURSDAY...

THERE CONTINUES TO BE A POTENTIAL FOR DANGEROUSLY STRONG EASTERLY
DOWNSLOPE WINDS TO AFFECT THE WASATCH FRONT LATE WEDNESDAY NIGHT
AND THURSDAY...SPECIFICALLY DURING THE THURSDAY MORNING COMMUTE.

DAMAGING EASTERLY WIND GUSTS IN EXCESS OF 70 MPH ARE POSSIBLE...
AND SIMILAR EVENTS IN YEARS PAST HAVE CAUSED WIDESPREAD DAMAGE TO
PERSONAL PROPERTY AND SIGNIFICANTLY IMPACTED BOTH INTERSTATE
TRAVEL AND RAILROAD OPERATIONS. TYPICALLY THESE TYPE OF EVENTS
HAVE HAD THE GREATEST IMPACT ON THE NORTHERN WASATCH FRONT FROM
NORTH SALT LAKE TO BRIGHAM CITY...BUT ALL AREAS ALONG THE WASATCH
FRONT FROM SPANISH FORK NORTH HAVE THE POTENTIAL FOR DAMAGING
WINDS. SMALL CHANGES TO THE STORM'S TRACK MAY CHANGE THE LOCATION
AND OR STRENGTH OF THESE WINDS.

I know, in fact, was going to post all the strange high-wind events that have taken place in the past week, but figured they would be of no consequence to anyone since they are past events.

My pleasure. I would try and get home before 6:00 PM if you can (that's when the winds are forecast to develop). They're supposed to be strongest between 3:00 AM and 9:00 AM. I hope all goes OK with your travel.

Wind on the wasatch front is usually from the west, sometimes from the south, and sometimes from the north. It is much more rare to get an east wind.

The forecast of an east wind does tend to remind me of this scripture:

Moroni 7:31 And again he saith: If my people shall sow filthiness they shall reap the east wind, which bringeth immediate destruction.

rare huh? http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/slc/projects/99 ... story.html title of that article is "violent winds nothing new along Wasatch" I'm not sure where you get this notion of them being rare...they are anything but rare.....

John, the last time we had a wind event resembling the wind speeds they're expecting later tonight and tomorrow was 1995 and that was a powerful cold front that experienced frontogenesis as it grew in size and strength after crossing Nevada - this current event is due to being caught in the middle of very strong low and high pressure systems (which results in a pressure gradient capable of generating hurricane force winds) combined with a cold front bringing snow and wind. The conditions creating the powerful winds are what is rare. Heck, microbursts from thunderstorms and wrap-around from low pressure systems can generate 70 mph winds in the valleys and canyon areas (east) and they occur all the time... this situation tonight and tomorrow is different.

I think you missed my point. I wasn't saying windstorms are rare. My point was that usually the wind comes from the west, north, and south with an east wind being the more rare phenomenon of the directions from which the wind blows.

Yeah hopefully my plastic will stay on the gardens....hate to damage my crops. Also hope the chickens and rabbits don't have issues....if the plastic comes off their garden I'll be cleaning up straw for a week with that kind of wind.

I don't know shadowman... here's the latest:

http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/FXC/wxstory.php?wfo=slc

Confidence in a destructive wind event late tonight through Thursday has increased. Focused concern for the strongest wind potential is across the northern Wasatch front from North Salt Lake to Brigham City...but strong and gusty winds are expected for portions of Salt Lake, Tooele, Utah and Cache counties as well.

* AFFECTED AREA: THE SALT LAKE AND TOOELE VALLEYS...AND NORTHERN
WASATCH FRONT...PARTICULARLY NORTHERN SALT LAKE COUNTY... DAVIS

FAR NORTHERN UTAH COUNTY NEAR LEHI. LOCALLY STRONG WINDS ARE
ALSO POSSIBLE ON THE EASTERN BENCH AREAS FROM OLYMPUS COVE
THROUGH THE AVENUES IN EASTERN SALT LAKE COUNTY.

* WINDS: EAST WINDS OF 40 TO 60 MPH WITH GUSTS IN EXCESS OF 80 MPH
POSSIBLE. THE CORE OF STRONGEST WINDS LOOKS TO IMPACT DAVIS
COUNTY.

* TIMING: DEVELOPING TONIGHT AROUND MIDNIGHT AND CONTINUING
THROUGH THURSDAY. THE STRONGEST WINDS ARE EXPECTED THURSDAY

* IMPACTS: THIS IS A POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS SITUATION. TRAVELERS

=)) Not one leaf rustled all night long and as I am looking outside right now, the wind is blowing a ferocious 0 mph. :ymapplause: I guess they got hit pretty good though in Davis County, where 30,000 homes are without power this morning. Reports indicate that some wind gusts up north hit 90 mph and there were multiple rollovers and jackknifes of big rigs that have closed some highways. A few elementary schools have been closed as well up north, but from Salt Lake south, not even a breeze. #-o

From the NWS as of 5:00 AM...

DISCUSSION...DESTRUCTIVE WIND EVENT ONGOING ACROSS PORTIONS OF THE CWA THIS MORNING. WIND GUSTS UP TO 82 MPH HAVE BEEN REPORTED NEAR CENTERVILLE SO FAR...WITH WIDESPREAD WINDS GUSTS OVER 58 MPH FROM LAYTON SOUTH TO SALT LAKE CITY. DAMAGE REPORTS ARE STARTING TO COME IN FROM THESE LOCATIONS. MULTIPLE REPORTS OF TRANSFORMERS EXPLODING...POWERLINES DOWN AND SO FAR MINOR PROPERTY DAMAGE.

They just reported that Centerville is getting winds right now of 102 mph. :-o Where I am (Orem - about 45 miles south of Centerville), nothing but a little breeze. Weird.

It's been crazy in Davis County. My husband said the freeway was closed to trucks and there were several tipped over. They had sporadic power this morning at his work. Here we've been getting some crazy gusts throwing things around. We had to stake down the trampoline really well and the garbage can lids have been flying around our chicken coop. In fact, right now one is stuck to the wall of the chicken run about six feet up. It ripped the water line from the back of our house that went up to the swamp cooler. The garbage can just missed landing on my husband's motorcycle.

Other than that it's sunny and beautiful. Just like my son's attitude about his writing assignment now- haha!

One of our facilities up north is still without power and is considering sending their critical care patients to us because they're exhausting all of their back-up generator fuel. :-o

Just a little breezier than normal down south here. No big deal. Up north it was a lot more severe. The righteous Saints stay away from LA and San Fran. To many crazies and degenerates up that direction. :D
