News Corp. Said to Consider Chase Carey as CEO

July 18 (Bloomberg) -- Bloomberg's Andy Fixmer, Outsell Inc.'s Ken Doctor, and Yacktman Asset Management Co.'s Donald Yacktman talk with Bloomberg's Julie Hyman and Adam Johnson about the outlook for News Corp. and its Chief Executive Officer Rupert Murdoch. News Corp. is considering elevating Chief Operating Officer Chase Carey to CEO to succeed Rupert Murdoch, people with knowledge of the situation said. A decision hasn’t been made and a move depends in part on Murdoch’s performance before Parliament Tuesday, said the people, who weren’t authorized to speak publicly. News Corp. is considering elevating Chief Operating Officer Chase Carey to chief executive officer to succeed Rupert Murdoch, people with knowledge of the situation said.
A decision hasn’t been made and a move depends in part on Murdoch’s performance before the U.K. Parliament today, said the people, who weren’t authorized to speak publicly. Murdoch would remain chairman, the people said.
News Corp. executives who watched Murdoch, 80, rehearse for his appearance were concerned about how he handled questions, according three people, who weren’t authorized to speak publicly. Murdoch and his son James are scheduled to discuss the company’s role in the alleged phone hacking of murder victims, members of the royal family and others by the News of the World, which was closed on July 10.
“This will be a heavily reviewed performance,” said Laura Martin, an analyst with Needham & Co. in Pasadena, California. “Who would have thought this could happen two weeks ago?”
News Corp. (NWSA)’s Australia shares rose 3.5 percent to A$14.65 at 10:16 a.m. in Sydney, paring their decline since July 4 to 14 percent. Standard & Poor’s said yesterday it may lower the company’s corporate debt rating because of risks created by the phone-hacking scandal.
Independent directors yesterday weighed naming Carey CEO, according to a person close to the board. The independent directors, who didn’t make a decision, discussed whether the stock market and investors would react favorably to a change, the person said.
Damage Control
There was no meeting yesterday to elevate Carey, said a senior News Corp. executive who sought anonymity because the matter is private. Existing succession plans get re-evaluated from time to time, and any suggestion they have been accelerated or implemented are unfounded, the person said.
Board members and executives at News Corp. are concerned about Murdoch’s ability to contain the fallout from the hacking scandal, the people said. It has swelled since the Guardian newspaper reported on July 4 that News of the World had hacked into the voicemail of a murdered teenager, Milly Dowler. The company’s top publishing executive in the U.K., Rebekah Brooks, resigned last week and was arrested on July 17.
Independent directors must protect shareholders and act in their best interest, said Martin, who recommends buying News Corp. shares. Considering succession issues at this moment is “justifiable,” she said.
Brooks, who resigned last week as CEO of News Corp.’s U.K. newspaper unit, is scheduled to give evidence to Parliament today as well.
Politicians, Police
The fallout has touched high-level politicians and police officials in Britain. Metropolitan Police Commissioner Paul Stephenson resigned over suggested police links to News Corp.’s U.K. unit and its hiring of a former journalist at News of the World as a consultant. Prime Minister David Cameron cut short a trip to Africa to prepare for a statement to Parliament on July 20.
By installing Carey, 57, as CEO, News Corp. would be relying on a trusted Murdoch deputy to help get past the hacking scandal.
Carey worked for 15 years as a senior News Corp. executive before becoming CEO of DirecTV (DTV) in 2003. He returned in 2009 following the resignation of Peter Chernin as Murdoch’s No. 2.
Independent Directors
News Corp.’s independent directors, who hold nine of 16 board seats, have expressed frustration over the quality and quantity of information they’ve received about the scandal and concern about management’s ability to handle the crisis given how slowly the company has responded, a person with knowledge of the situation said earlier.
According to News Corp.’s proxy filing, independent board member Roderick Eddington, the former CEO of British Airways, is the company’s lead director. He has the responsibility to call meetings of the non-executive directors or independent directors and to serve as a liaison between the chairman and the independent board members.
Murdoch’s voting power suggests his influence at the company would continue after a leadership change.
“Rupert Murdoch controls the votes of the company through the Class B shares,” Charles Elson, director of the John L. Weinberg Center for Corporate Governance at the University of Delaware, said this week in an interview. “He can just replace them if he wants. They may do something, but it will be temporary. Maybe he becomes chairman, but this is still his company and he can do what he wants. When he controls the stock, he controls the board.”
Family Holdings
Through a family trust, the Murdochs own 306.6 million shares, or 38.4 percent, of News Corp.’s Class B voting stock, according to the company’s proxy statement. Including other family holdings, Rupert Murdoch controls 39.7 percent of the voting power, giving him effective control, filings show.
The value of the family’s holdings has declined by almost $1 billion since the scandal erupted, according to Bloomberg data.
Bloomberg LP, the parent of Bloomberg News, competes with News Corp. units in providing financial news and information.
Carey stepped down as News Corp.’s co-chief operating officer and as an aide to Murdoch in 2002 after serving in that role since 1996. The executive helped Fox acquire rights to the National Football League, National Hockey League and Major League Baseball.

Anyone else find the way this mans death was handled strange?

From the Guardian:
Sean Hoare, the former News of the World showbusiness reporter who was the first named journalist to allege that Andy Coulson was aware of phone hacking by his staff, has been found dead .

Hoare, who worked on the Sun and the News of the World with Coulson before being dismissed for drink and drugs problems, was said to have been found at his Watford home.

Hertfordshire police would not confirm his identity, but said in a statement: "At 10.40am today [Monday 18 July] police were called to Langley Road, Watford, following the concerns for the welfare of a man who lives at an address on the street. Upon police and ambulance arrival at a property, the body of a man was found. The man was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after.

"The death is currently being treated as unexplained but not thought to be suspicious. Police investigations into this incident are ongoing."

There was an unexplained delay in the arrival of forensics officers at the scene.

Neighbours said three police cars and two ambulances arrived at the property shortly before 11am. They left around four hours later, around 3pm, shortly after a man and a woman, believed to be grieving relatives, arrived at the premises. There was no police presence at the scene at all for several hours.

The curtains were drawn at the first-floor apartment in a new-build block of flats.

At about 9.15pm, three hours after the Guardian revealed Hoare had been found dead a police van marked "Scientific Services Unit" pulled up at the address, where a police car was already parked. Two officers emerged carrying evidence bags, clipboards, torches and laptop-style bags and entered the building. Three officers carrying cameras and wearing white forensic suits went into the flat at around 9.30pm.
"Grieving relatives", alone in the apartment with curtains drawn for "several hours" BEFORE forensic evidence was collected?

This guy apparently outed himself and his ex-boss back in September, saying that he was encouraged to hack into phone accounts. This guys ex-boss had become an advisor to the prime minister of the UK. Just saying...

Nice find loquaciousmomma!

This phone-hack story has the potential to bring down the entire Murdoch media empire - especially if the information keeps drip, drip, dripping out as it is. The Murdoch family has got to get ahead of this before it jumps the Atlantic. If people need to be blown out, blow 'em out. Clean house and burn dead wood, but this story's gotta be over or, before they know it, it'll be food for the pack animals of competing media.

And if Murdoch-owed media outlets have been attempting to intimidate politicians, celebrities or the Royal Family, the pack animals will be joined by the predators who could have serious challenges with the Murdoch way of doing business. According to police, his death is not suspicious. (http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2011/ju ... sean-hoare" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;)

Reminds me of the DC Madam Murder which they said she committed suicide and was not suspicious when the week before on the Alex Jones Show she said was was not planning on committing suicide anytime soon. Why isn't anyone investigating this woman's murder when she clearly and on multiple occasions publicly claimed she was not going to commit suicide? Just listen to this. Among her clients were Dick Cheney, John McCain, Rudy Giuliani, and Fred Thompson.

Hmmm, she was obviously murdered!! It's actually sooooo foul, it's almost unbelievable!! This is straight out of a movie..The murders involving government officials is so BOLD and BLATANT!! This next video just listen to all the corruption going on in this case. Its truly astounding.

The modern day Gadianton Robers have infiltrated every part of our society, gov. schools, police, Judges, ect.... They have put all their fiends in position of power so they can cover these things up. Unbelievable.,

Helaman 6:21,23;
21But behold, Satan did stir up the hearts of the more part of the Nephites, insomuch that they did unite with those bands of robbers, and did enter into their covenants and their oaths, that they would protect and preserve one another in whatsoever difficult circumstances they should be placed, that they should not suffer for their murders, and their plunderings, and their stealings.

23And thus they might murder, and plunder, and steal, and commit whoredoms and all manner of wickedness, contrary to the laws of their country and also the laws of their God.
Whistle blowers are falling dead left and right. Just search; NWO whistle blowers researchers murdered, and research what they were saying.

For good measure here is one more video.

You watch, If this story gains any traction and the far left hack job stations MSBC, CNN, ABC they will put on the appearance that they are against Rupert Murdock. But the reality is this is a huge. And most people will not talk about it and tell you everything about this as it have given every indication as being, Here are some fact commentary and you go find out for yourself. But I am going to speculate on a couple of things here . Here is what happened in London. Initially, the Murdock family or the operatives of the Murdock holdings in the UK admitted to some of this stuff, than they backed off from them because the accountability on this and potential exposure is huge. But by all accounts here is what happened in the easy understandable explanation, It appears, allegedly, Murdock organization in the UK were involved in hacking cell phone calls, and apparently now coming out hacking email accounts for some of the people they were covering for. Example, celebrities, the Royal family and elected officials in Great Britain. Upon getting this dirt, the cell phone conversations, emails that they were allegedly intercepting, they were than paying bribes allegedly, to the London Police department. What the London Police Department appears to be doing is getting paid off, bribing police officers, to leak this information to there contact within the Rupert Murdock organization in London, and than the paper would be printing the stories. OR Imagine this, Imagine them going to a member of the royal family and saying, " you know, who knows where the sources are or how they are finding this stuff out, were hearing that XYZ is to have said this, we were hoping you could help us and we will help you a little bit. Than the deal is cut. Now was this happening in the US? There is already word that allegedly that the Murdock organization were attempting to hack cell phone calls of 9-11 survivors and victims. Why would they do this? So was this an isolated case? Or is this the way of doing business? Now Rupert Murdock and Fox News is not bringing a conservative view to the USA. I know allot of people think this so. If you are really paying attention you will know that is not what is happening. Because if it were, the questions become very self evident. When you got Donald Rumsfeld, Dick Cheney, Bush or Obama sitting right in front of you, and you are doing an interview you would ask questions of real accountability. You would not have someone waving their hand in the AIR and pointer there finger at you saying “caution; you are about to enter the no spin zone” as he lies to his audience about the social security # of Barrack Husein Obama knowing full well that he is lying about it. There is no way Bill O’ Riley lives as ignorant of life that one would have to live to be so unaware of the controversies surrounding the social security number of Obama. So there is a trade off. Something is defiantly going on here. In which the thing, the commodity that is being traded, and in the process of being traded being devalued is the truth. WHERE IS THE TRUTH?? You look at the media and you wonder why there isn’t any accountability? What happened to the 5th estate? What happened to the press being a watchdog of the people? Why are we getting all this propaganda? Every time I watch Fox News I feel like the country is in meltdown mode yet there is always a good looking blond with a big smile on her face showing a little bit a cleavage, always having a good old time while we are supposed to believe we are in meltdown. I don’t know what the Murdock corp. is involved with. Don't know what Rupert knew. Chief of London police resigned, the top dog and head of Murdock’s empire in the UK resigned two days ago. On a Sunday saying his name was clear. Tell me how that makes sense. One thing I do know is you have the Murdock family, and you have the second largest shareholder of the Murdock family corp being a Saudi prince who brags to his family members that he can control and influence the news that is broadcast on fox news. This is a fact. The statements have been made. I don’t know if he really can, but he has said it and I would not be surprised. He is quoted as saying such. So the question is, do you trust anyone who is spying on you in an illegal way? Allegedly. In order to get news the choose not to cover in exchange for favoritism they get. The getting of the get. Its not what they get on people it is about they get in return.

Semp: What is interesting about this story is that my husband heard it on Fox news radio last night, but I never heard it on any of the stations I listened to this morning, even NPR.(Although now I have found an in depth story on NPR, but it may be a background on Mr. Hoare, I will check it out.) I came home and googled it and as of 7 or so this morning, the only stories I found about it were small, almost obits, in the UK. Reuters covered it, AFP covered it, but not the major news outlets here. Except on the blogs of the Washington post, the New York Times, and some alternate media like Salon and Huffington post.

This was not on any major regular news, but it was on Rupert-owned Fox.

HUH? :-\

What I want to know Col. Flagg is why was Fox News and Rupert Murdock illegally eavesdropping on 9-11family victims, and 9-11 responders?? I also would bet my life that this is not an isolated indecent! No wonder Fox News hates 9-11 family victims.

Hard to say, but obviously, they wanted to know something. Hard to say or know if it was tied to the truth about what really happened on 9/11 or not? I know the feds were quick to compensate some of the victims' families - maybe this had something to do with it?
