Temple Recommend Question: Teachings That Oppose LDS Church

Post by Rosabella »

7 Do you support, affiliate with, or agree with any group or individual whose teachings or practices are contrary to or oppose those accepted by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints?
I keep thinking about how many people are involved with the New age spirituality and support, affiliate with it and agree with groups, teachers, individuals and follow their Teachings, Practices that are contrary and opposed to those that are accepted by the LDS Church.

When we follow and agree with someone like Wayne Dyer who says those that believe in a God are the non-spiritual and those that recognize themselves as God are the spiritual ones and denies Christ as Savior and Redeemer, are we not doing exactly what this question for a recommend is asking?

Or those that read and embrace books by Esther Hicks about the Law of Attraction for she is a medium.

I would like to open a discussion on what people embrace that should keep them from going to the temple.

Last time I was asked that question I had to answer that yes I do. I am a republican. The Bishop and Stake President didn't quite know what to say.

I've been wondering about that, as there are people in our ward that are supportive of Martha Beck's (daughter of Hugh Nibley who said he molested her as a child and she is now gay) Life Coach program...she wrote a book called "Leaving the Saints" and was excommunicated for her speaking out against the Church, I believe. We have an inactive member who is a Life Coach, and she posts lots of new age quotes and the women at church (lots of them, incl. young women, RS pres, SP's wife, etc.) on facebook all seem to love it. I don't know if should try to give them a heads-up on it or not.... BTW, I really appreciate all you have written on helping us understand how deeply evil the new age stuff is; I hadn't realized it before, thank you!

I always figured this temple recommend question could apply to the democratic party, which often supports abortion. Abortion, as we know, is against the general counsel given to us by the church.

Anyone that supports the democratic party isn't worthy of a temple recommend?

Interviewing Instructions

Exercise great care when interviewing applicants for recommends to enter a temple. Make it clear that you represent the Lord in determining worthiness to enter his holy house. No unworthy applicant should receive a recommend. Be certain that each applicant is worthy as a result of living up to Church standards and principles. Acceptable answers to the recommend interview questions ordinarily will establish worthiness to receive a recommend. Do not assume that worthiness to enter the temple at one time is reason for a casual interview later. Discuss the interview questions with each applicant, and keep each interview private.

Require an applicant who is not living up to Church standards and principles to demonstrate true repentence before receiving a recommend to enter a temple.

When interviewing an applicant for a recommend, do not inquire into personal, intimate matters about marital relations between a husband and his wife.
Generally, do not deviate from the recommend interview questions. If, during an interview, an applicant asks about the propriety of specific conduct, do not pursue the matter. Merely suggest that if the applicant has enough anxiety about the
propriety of the conduct to ask about it, the best course would be to discontinue it. If you are sensitive and wise, you usually can prevent those being interviewed from asking such explicit questions.
Interview Questions for Recommends to Enter a Temple

2. Do you sustain the President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as the prophet, seer, and revelator; and do you recognize him as the only person on the earth authorized to exercise all priesthood keys?

3. Do you sustain the other General Authorities and the local authorities of the Church?

4. Do you live the law of chastity?

5. Is there anything in your conduct relating to members of your family that is not in harmony with the teachings of the Church?

6. Do you affiliate with any group or individual whose teachings or practices are contrary to or oppose those accepted by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, or do you sympathize with the precepts of any such group or individual?

7 Do you support, affiliate with, or agree with any group or individual whose teachings or practices are contrary to or oppose those accepted by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints?

8. Are you honest in your dealings with your fellowmen?

9. Are you a full-tithe payer?

10. Do you keep the Word of Wisdom?

11. Have you ever been divorced or are you now separated from your spouse under order of a civil court? If yes, (a) - Are you current in your support payments and other financial obligations for family members, as specified by court order or in other written, binding commitments? (b) Were there any circumstances of transgression in connection
with your divorce or separation that have not been previously resolved with your bishop?

12. If you have received your temple endowment -- (a) Do you keep all the covenants that you made in the temple? (b) Do you wear the authorized garments both day and night?

I've said something similar to that about the Federal Government. Both the Bishop and Stake President just chuckled and moved on.

As a branch president I considered asking certain members if they were reporting all earned income to the appropriate government authority. After explaining my awareness of certain members supplementing their income from government welfare programs with large amounts by moonlighting and not reporting it as required by law, I was told by a member of the stake presidency to not ask that question.

It is their chance to tell the Lord the truth as it is to equally lie to God. The interview is between God and that individual. Not you or me or anyone else.

Republican party, Democrat party, New Age groups...

I once said "Yes, I am registered Republican" during a temple recommend interview and the guy just laughed and move on... :D (I really don't agree with or support the Republican party, but I suppose by being registered R I am affiliating. I better change that)

I had a similar experience one time when I said I never have had any good reason to join the republican/democrat parties and I never have supported cops or milartry members who follow orders from gadiantons or protected them. I said I have family and I home taught people who did those things, but I keep my feelings to myself unless asked.

Soon after I got a home teaching assignment change. For one month I home taught a husband and wife who were both cops, they both had big egos, but whatever, I never said a word. We stucked to the lesson and had a nice chat about family life.

I also home taught a military family for about a year. They have family members that fight in the undeclared wars, just like I have family that do the same. That family was taken away from me also.

I asked why that happened and I was told that the presidency felt inspired to have me teach other families.

For now on I just answer the question as "no", I do not trust my priesthood leaders will treat me the same after I expand on my understanding of the temple recommend questions.

What does this even mean? As has been pointed out by most of the other posters, we all affiliate with groups that fit these descriptions.

I believe the question is geared more towards anti-Mormon groups and others who openly OPPOSE the church... though the wording could probably use a bit of touching-up.

Republicans can be considered to have views in opposition to the church's views, but Republicans are not actively opposing the church.

It is not just political parties. We associate with the federal government which is actively opposing the Gospel. We associate and support with our money businesses that are opposing the Gospel. We associate with other Churches that actively oppose the Gospel. etc, etc.

If you bring up any of those things, you will get your recommend.

So are there only certain groups that aren't pc that we aren't to associate with?

i like your style

from first hand experience tho, HT stats are so low the HPGL and EQP are always changing it around to try and find something that works stats wise.

plus move ins and move outs effect who sees who. seriously, i am sure that your change was part of about 20 changes. very rarely is one assignment changed only

like your style tho- i agree. todays military is career military / modern mercenary for money, gun for hire, with innocent blood on its hand whether it fired the weapon or not

Thanks for those comments, I appreciate it. I understand we are all different levels of understanding on a whole host of issues. As a home teacher I stick to the lesson and really enjoy building a great relationship with everyone I home teach regardless of their beliefs and misguided intentions. I try to be like Christ and be loving in words and in actions. I teach the lessons and let the bishop be the judge. I learn a lot from my families I teach. It is one of my most favorite things to do inside of my church activity.

I was looking fro more of a thread on being involved into spiritual things that deny Christ and are in opposition to our Church.

I agree people are affiliated with wrong politics, but I was looking more for the spiritual side.

On the political topic. I was on a different forum where they were discussing how our Church has NO political opinions and I had to laugh. So I posted some really good quotes that showed how the Church has HUGE opinions. They had been arguing that socialism was the closest to the United Order.... After I posted that people were like WOW I had no idea the Church ever addressed politics before????

So lack of desire to search out words of Prophets really does hurt people. When ever I am pondering a issue I look to see what has been said in conference talks before I come to an opinion. I also search the Scriptures, but I verify what I think the Scriptures say with what has been reveled as the correct interpretation by our Prophets.

I would like to see if we can look at what things do people get involved in that are in direct opposition of the Church. Things like Gay Marriage. Or more spiritual activities. I have know of Wiccan members. That feel it is OK to be Wiccan and be LDS.

A number of years ago, there was a 'group' of people who were following a certain man. They believed him to be a Prophet. This group had purchased numerous homes within just a few blocks of one another, and was within my ward.
I knew several of the people in the group. They were wonderful, outstanding people, whom I loved. I felt that they were truly the elect we here about being deceived. Some I had known since they were children. I wanted to remain close to them, not as a whole, but as individuals. I wanted them to know there was someone who cared about them on the outside. Everyone knew this was not going to turn out well. As I had my Temple Recommend interview, and the question came up, I answered Yes. Yes, that I had sympathies towards some of the group, but did not agree with them in doctrine. As everyone knew, it did not end well. Several of the women, and the leader went to prison. I have remained close to some of these people, whom I love dearly. I believe we associate with people we don't know what their motives are, in tiny subtle ways we are led away, down to the abyss. The other brother is so clever, he brings us down slowly, without even realizing what is happening. We need to be vigilant in watching. I'm not sure I agree with the Stake President who counseled the Branch Present to omit a question on the interview. The questions are there for a reason, and I'm sure come through the First Presidency, I for one think there is a purpose for the questions. Keep Seeking the Light!

When I was growing up as a boy my grandmother was high up in the Republican Party. She told my brother and I many times that if we ever voted anything but Republican she would get us. I grew up a life long Republican. And when I would go in for a Temple Recommend I would answer the question that I was a Republican (they would smile and go on).

But now we have entered the time where evil possess both parties and I am no longer a Republican. And I don't even want to think about the Democrats. They are both so filled with secret combinations that they no longer represent anything but their dark master. If anything I have become a Jeffersonian Constitutionalists (that which governs best governs least). I belong to no political party. At election time I vote my conscience. And I never miss an election. I consider that my civic responsibility of being a good citizen -- besides it entitles me to complain.

When I was younger various factions tried to recruit me -- the Council On Foreign Relations, The Trilateral Commission, the Masons, and others -- not because of who I am but because of that fact that I am a proven descendent of King David. I turned them all down because I knew they are filled with evil. My brother fell into and is now a 33 degree Mason. He tells me regularly that I am an idiot for standing for Jesus Christ. And he hates the LDS Church.

We must know where we stand and Whom we serve. It is more important now than ever.

This question calls for speculation on anyone's part who chooses to answer it. None of us are qualified to say whether someone is qualified to go to the temple or not unless we know for a fact that that person is in direct opposition to the teachings and the interviewing Priesthood holder doesn't know it. I can see no positive results from this discussion that would end us up in a better place than where we started. No offense intended.
