Romney Fans Vindicated!

Post by Bee Prepared »

Ten months after Mitt Romney shuffled off the national stage in defeat — consigned, many predicted, to a fate of instant irrelevance and permanent obscurity — Republicans are suddenly celebrating the presidential also-ran as a political prophet.

From his widely mocked warnings about a hostile Russia to his adamant opposition to the increasingly unpopular implementation of Obamacare, the ex-candidate’s canon of campaign rhetoric now offers cause for vindication — and remorse — to Romney’s friends, supporters, and former advisers.

“I think about the campaign every single day, and what a shame it is who we have in the White House,” said Spencer Zwick, who worked as Romney’s finance director and is a close friend to his family. “I look at things happening and I say, you know what? Mitt was actually right when he talked about Russia, and he was actually right when he talked about how hard it was going to be to implement Obamacare, and he was actually right when he talked about the economy. I think there are a lot of everyday Americans who are now feeling the effects of what [Romney] said was going to happen, unfortunately.”

Of course, there is a long tradition in American politics of dwelling on counterfactuals and re-litigating past campaigns after your candidate loses. Democrats have argued through the years that America would have avoided two costly Middle East wars, solved climate change, and steered clear of the housing crisis if only the Supreme Court hadn’t robbed Al Gore of his rightful victory in 2000. But a series of White House controversies and international crises this year — including a Syrian civil war that is threatening to pull the American military into the mix — has caused Romney’s fans to erupt into a chorus of told-you-so’s at record pace.

In the most actively cited example of the Republican nominee’s foresight, Romneyites point to the candidate’s hardline rhetoric last year against Russian President Vladimir Putin and his administration. During the campaign, Romney frequently criticized Obama for foolishly attempting to make common cause with the Kremlin, and repeatedly referred to Russia as “our number one geopolitical foe.”

Many observers found this fixation strange, and Democrats tried to turn it into a punchline. A New York Times editorial in March of last year said Romney’s assertions regarding Russia represented either “a shocking lack of knowledge about international affairs or just craven politics.” And in an October debate, Obama sarcastically mocked his opponent’s Russia rhetoric. “The 1980s are now calling to ask for their foreign policy back because the Cold War’s been over for 20 years,” the president quipped at the time.

That line still chafes Robert O’Brien, a Los Angeles lawyer and friend of Romney’s who served as a foreign policy adviser.

“Everyone thought, Oh my goodness that is so clever and Mitt’s caught in the Cold War and doesn’t know what he’s talking about,” O’Brien said. “Well guess what. With all of these foreign policy initiatives — Syria, Iran, [Edward] Snowden — who’s out there causing problems for America? It’s Putin and the Russians.”

Indeed, earlier this summer, Moscow defiantly refused to extradite National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden to the United States, prompting Obama to cancel a meeting he had scheduled with Putin during the Group of 20 summit. Russia has blocked United Nations action against Syria. And on Wednesday, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel told lawmakers that Russia was one of the countries supplying Syria with chemical weapons.

To Romney’s fans, these episodes illustrate just how unfairly their candidate was punished during the election for speaking truths the rest of the country would eventually come around to.

“The governor tried to enunciate how to deal with these very hard, tough issues, and we were met with slogans,” O’Brian lamented. “And now the real world is exposing the slogans as being totally trite.”

Admirers point to other examples of Romney’s unrewarded wisdom, as well.

During a foreign policy debate in October, the candidate briefly expressed concern over Islamic extremists taking control of northern Mali — an obscure reference that was mocked on Twitter at the time, including by liberal comedian Bill Maher. Three months later, France sent troops into the country at the behest of the Malian president, bringing the conflict to front pages around the world.

On the domestic front, Obamacare — which Romney spent more time railing against on the stump than perhaps any other progressive policy — is less popular than ever, while the federal government struggles to get the massive, complicated law implemented. (One poll in July found for the first time that a plurality of Americans now support the law’s repeal.)

And while the unemployment rate has, in the first year of Obama’s second term, gradually fallen to post-crisis lows, the still-ailing U.S. economy, which served as the centerpiece for Romney’s unsuccessful case against Obama’s reelection, was given a potent symbol earlier this summer when Detroit became the largest American city ever to declare bankruptcy.

The Motor City became a symbolic battleground during the election, with Romney proudly touting his father’s ties to the auto industry, and the Obama campaign relentlessly attacking the Republican for a Times op-ed he had written years earlier headlined “Let Detroit Go Bankrupt.”

“The president took the title of that op-ed, which of course was written by editors of the New York Times, and used it to say Gov. Romney was being insensitive about his own home city,” complained former campaign spokesman Ryan Williams. Romney’s article argued that beleaguered automakers should consider going through a managed bankruptcy instead of taking a bailout but, Williams said, “the president’s campaign intentionally tried to blur the lines. It worked. And several months later, the city is going bankrupt because of liberal democratic officeholders.”

Referring to the bankruptcy, Putin’s posturing, and the Mali conflict, Williams added, “Obviously, it would have been nice if any of these incidents would have occurred during the campaign to vindicate Romney. You would never want to see the bankruptcy of a major U.S. city, or the president embarrass himself on the world stage like he has, but Gov. Romney did discuss these potential outcomes.”

Romneyites are processing these feelings of vindication in different ways. The campaign’s chief strategist, Stuart Stevens, said he has been disappointed to see their central message — that Obama would be unable to restore America’s strength — turned out to be so accurate: “If there is a part of the world in which America is stronger, it’s hard to find. What’s the president doing? Attacking a talk radio host. He has criticized Rush Limbaugh with more conviction than the leaders of Iran… We can only hope it improves. ”

And Jennifer Rubin, the conservative Washington Post blogger who became Romney’s most outspoken advocate in the press, accused members of the news media of failing to take the Republican’s arguments seriously, while allowing the incumbent skate through the race untouched.

“As for the media, they are the least self-reflective people I know,” Rubin said. “The left-leaning media has carried the president’s water faithfully, eschewing the least bit of critical analysis. Now they don’t like the result?”

For Zwick, perhaps the closest thing to a true Romney loyalist on the campaign last year, the belief that his candidate turned out to be right offers little comfort.

“It’s frustrating because there’s no way to correct it,” Zwick said. “We don’t do what they do in the U.K. and lead the opposition party when you lose. When you lose there is no way to sort of be vindicated. There’s no way to say, ‘OK, well, I didn’t win the presidency but I’m going to continue to fight.’ There’s no fighting. There’s no platform to do that. Fifty million Americans voted for the guy and yet it’s all for nothing.”

“I wish he’d run again,” Zwick added. “He’s not going to. But if he did, I’d be right there.”

Fan = an enthusiastic devotee, an ardent admirer. Yes, Mitt Romney certainly had many of those, and apparently still does. And that is probably especially true among the LDS community. His service as bishop, stake president, and in other church related positions was certainly a service to many Mormons. But as is often the case with many other men and women who have enthusiastic devotees and ardent admirers (think of the many athletes, actors and actresses, etc. who were not successful in more important aspects of their lives), he had his failings. And I still think it is important that voters, especially LDS voters, be aware of those failings.

Mitt Romney has demonstrated little allegiance to the US Constitution. Some well-informed Mormons tried to warn about Romney's lack of knowledge of and/or dedication to our Constitution, but were generally ignored. The big danger that I perceived of a Romney presidency is that he would continue to lead people who should know better (a.k.a. Latter-day Saints) still further away from support of a restoration of constitutional principles in government. If I had seen any indication that he would try to steer our government back to the principles of the US Constitution I might have considered voting for him. But I have seen nothing of the sort.

What chance did Mitt have against the rampant voter fraud in favour of Obama?

What a different world it would be now if Obama had not been elected

If Obama had not been elected fewer Americans would be awake to our "awful situation". There would be less resistance to the latter-day gadiantons.

Agreed, but I would suggest there would also be less AWARENESS to the latter-day Gadiantons.

Voting for the lesser of 2 evils is still evil. We don't vote to be on a wining side we vote to ensure our salvation in the celestial kingdom. It's no different then putting your arm to the square. If the candidate you voted for taxes the people. Puts them in bondage that is on your head.

D&C 98:9-10 Admonishes us to seek diligently for honest, wise, good men to uphold in political office, and "whatsoever is less than these cometh of evil."
Hyrum Smith the Patriarch of the Church: "We engage in the election the same as in any other principle, you're to vote for good men and if you do not do this it is a sin. To vote for wicked men, it would be sin! Choose the good and refuse the evil. Men of false principles have preyed upon us like wolves upon helpless lambs. Damn the rod of tyrrany and curse it! Let every man use his liberties according to the Constitution. Don't fear man or devil, electioneer with all people, male and female, and exhort them to do the thing which is right. We want a President of the United States, not a party President, but a President of the whole people, for a party President disenfranchises the other party. Have a President who will maintain every man in his rights." (HC 6:323)
Joseph Smith Jr.: "We shall have the satisfaction of knowing we have acted conscienciously and have used our best judgement, and if we have to throw away our votes, we had better do so upon a worthy rather than an unworthy individual who might make use of the weapon we put in his hand to destroy us!" (Comprehensive History of the Church 2:208-209)

Mitt was defently the lesser evil. He however did create the universal Health care plan that Obama copyed.

Ron Paul was the most constitutional candidate that was running.
The media tryed to make him out as crazy wonder why?.

That was an excellent post Ezra! :ymapplause: :ymapplause:
Could not have said it better myself.

You know what they said, in the last days right would be called wrong, and wrong would be called right (In reference to your comment about Ron Paul). As for myself, I didn't vote for Romney. He may be LDS, he may have done many good things, he may be nice, but, IMO, at the least, he is deceived and not awake just like so many others.

Here is a clip from the Presidential Debates on how Romney felt about the Constitution and going to congress to declare war. Of all folks, being LDS, and all, he, if anybody, should have been quite familiar with the U.S. Constitution. When he was done speaking Paul gave him the smack down, and a short little teaching on the Constitution. To bad he wasn't listening!!!!!

I can understand that perspective. I would have a very hard time voting for another Bush.

However, I would be willing to bet that you don't agree with your spouse 100% of the time. Ok...let's say you agree 85% of the time. Is your spouse evil? If you continue the marriage are you promoting evil? Is your spouse...by being 15% naive, silly, and gullible (because he/she doesn't agree with you); evil?

Let's say we have a choice between Stalin and Bill Clinton. A third party or non-vote ensures that Stalin comes to power. Who is evil, who is dumb and who is being so principled that Stalin gets to throw all Mormons in the Gulag.

Let's say I would like to pack up all the illegal immigrants and send them back and I would vote to kick out gay Boy Scouts. But then the Church comes out with a proclamation to allow gay Boy Scouts, and allow illegal immigrants to get a Temple Recommend. Should I leave because the Church does not agree me 100% of my positions?

We will never get a 100% pure candidate. I would bet that you and I don't agree 100% on what a perfect candidate is in the first place.

A Republican form of government is the people electing the representative that MOST CLOSELY aligns with their view.

Now Romney was not perfect by all means. But, would Romney have pulled the stunts that Obama has pulled? Would the economy have rebounded under Romney? Would there be some respect in the world toward the USA? Would there have been a great missionary opportunity?

The Progressive Nazis are like Satan seeing the Second Coming around the corner. They are going full blast to destroy the country and family as fast as they can while they are still the gods of this world. They are trying to flood Texas and other Red States to create a permanent entitled Blue sub-class. The Democrat politicians are truly evil; using children to further their goals and lying about just about everything. They know exactly what they are doing and why they are doing it.

We are like Mormon watching the Nephites commit suicide. We are watching the European-Americans (the Gentiles) fill their cup with abomination and awaiting the Lord to destroy them (see 3 Nephi et. al). There really is nothing we can do of course; except TRY to get the best people we can in office.

What is a bit curious to me, is the fact that the Progressive Nazis are bringing in their own destruction (thus the suicide comment). They are bringing in the Laminate Lions who will one day destroy the Gentile culture. Thus the Lord may not have to destroy the Gentiles on this land.....the Progressives may do it for Him. Similar to the native allies of Cortez who helped the Spaniards defeat the Aztec.s

As long as people keep thinking that voting for the lesser of the 2 evils that our gadiantan run media puts as our 2 front runners we will continue to have the problems we do. If you look at our history. There has been a member of the elitist as president or vise pres. Since 1913. Since the creation of the federal reserve. That's what voting for the lesser of 2 evils gets us. One or two steps closer to tyranny. Every time.

Think of it this way. Jesus is running for president or someone he raised up to do his will. Now to vote for this person as he is running in a third party would most likely mean that hitler would win over the lesser of the 2 evil primary front runners. Would you vote for Jesus or his man? Or the lesser of the 2 evils? Because that is what we are doing every time we vote.

If there is someone who good. Better then the other choses. Even if he has no chance that's who we should vote for.

D&c98.
10 Wherefore, honest men and wise men should be sought for diligently, and good men and wise men ye should observe to uphold; otherwise whatsoever is less than these cometh of evil.

Anything else cometh evil .

It's pretty simple.

Not even close......if the best available is not wise or good, then it is considered evil.
It is not your duty to just vote for someone, it is your duty to be informed by learning the Constitution as the Lord intended (what we had in 1833 when He gave his blessing on it) in order to be wise. Then you either vote for a candidate that is also wise, or run yourself.

I submit there was a clear difference between Dole and Clinton; between Bush and Gore; between Bush and Kerry, between Obama and Romney.

Not sure there was that much of a difference between Obama and the madman McCain.

Ok....I am feeling benevolent. There was a clear difference between Obama an McCain (that was painful)

My point is that many conservatives have such a fine litmus test (ie all must equal Reagan), that we will forever end up with Obama clones because the conservatives will sit out the election because no candidate was pure enough. I think that is suicide. The media knows what the conservatives are thinking by the way; and they will play up the non purity of any Republican candidate to make sure YOU stay at home.

I don't think a fair minded person could say that Romney equals Obama. That just doesn't pass any kind of rational test.

There are probably some Republican or conservative voters who look to Ronald Reagan as the outstanding example of what a good US president should be. But there are also some who recognize that Reagan was not all that he is cracked up to be. But Bill and probably some others, please understand that there are voters who believe it is a responsibility of the Latter-day Saints to support the Constitution of the United States and support and vote for only those who understand and will adhere to constitutional principles. That is why some Mormons did not support Mitt Romney, as you can see if you read posts on threads that deal with Romney. There were other candidates in both 2008 and 2012 who showed sincere intent to abide by the US Constitution.

I understand what you are saying Lundbaek. But it is going to be very lonely out there waiting for the perfect candidate who matches the constitutional integrity many require. In the meantime; the gulags will be filling up.

I propose putting the best person we can in government; and keep their feet to the fire; versus waiting for the chosen one who will never stray from any jot or tittle of the Constitution.

Worst case, it buys us time to hasten the work before all heck breaks loose.

There is waiting for a perfect candidate, but there is also wanting a candidate so bad that you don't examine him closely at all.

Romney disqualified himself when he argued in favor of "preventive war" (i.e. non-defensive invasions due to the country posing a threat) and also stated that the president can go to war without congressional approval. The war making power is a serious one, and the Constitution is explicit that Congress holds that power exclusively. It doesn't matter that almost no president in our lifetimes has respected that limitation on his power, and candidate that intends to continue to do so is unacceptable to me. I don't think that is too high of a standard.

Sadly, there were numerous other issues that Romney showed a complete lack of understanding of either his constitutional rights or responsibilities under the Constitution. He may have been an outstanding businessman, but you shouldn't apply for a job that you no very little about - especially when the job description is publicly available.

"Romney fans vindicated"? Hardly.

There were at least 2 candidates for POTUS in 2012, Ron Paul and Virgil Goode, who demonstrated understanding of and loyalty to the principles of the US Constitution. Granted, neither had a prayer's chance in a barroom of being elected. But as I recall we American members of the Church were counseled to seek, support, and vote for candidates that demonstrated understanding of and loyalty to the principles of the US Constitution. But I realize that there are Mormons who know better than their prophets and aapostles.

There is a growing Romney 2016 movement thanks in part to a lot of vindication on things Romney said during the 2012 election

Of course I don't want him to run and lose again, but he is out there, successfully, campaigning for and endorsing House Republicans, and the word is he is heavily in demand on the mid-term campaign trail. He looks like a unifier and a leader right now.

I look at Rand Paul seemingly having a hard time handling criticism, flip-flopping becoming exposed (after the nightmare people gave Romney over backtracking on issues, anyone else the GOP wants to run better be able to handle the same scrutiny) as he seems to be pivoting towards the middle vote, and his embarrassing caught-on-tape exit from confrontation while he was eating lunch and I don't think he's the shoe-in 2016 GOP nominee many have been feeling he'd be

I'm not sure how Cruz would perform on a national level. I don't think Jeb would excite many people.

Add Mitt Romney to the growing list of people opposed to the controversial anti-gay law in Arizona.

The 2012 Republican presidential candidate urged Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer via Twitter to veto Senate Bill 1062, which would allow businesses with strongly held religious beliefs to deny service to gays and lesbians.

Romney joins both U.S. senators from Arizona, John McCain and Jeff Flake, the Arizona Chamber of Commerce and Industry and a host of business leaders to call on Brewer to strike down the law. One of the fears in the business community is that the law would cost Arizona its shot at hosting Super Bowl XLIX next year.

Romney also seems to be in league with amnesty and illegal immigration supporters.

Yea, Romney really sounds vindicated. :))

If Romney runs again he will give the church a black eye. Missionary work will plummet.
I predict that if Romney runs again he will run into two buzz saws within the church that will expose/oppose him. :-$

Yes I'm anti-Romney but pro Ron Paul not Obama, yuk. I guess there are a few Obama people here and I out of hand dismiss them. Why would they even post here, this is a conservative forum for staunch constitutionalists not for mamby-pamby democrats/liberals or even Republicrats. So you "enjoy" our fears do you, well "fools mock but they shall mourn," put that in your pipe and smoke it. And Romney is a Gadianton! If it looks like a snake, hisses like a snake and does snakey things then it is a snake! In this case a Gadianton. :ymtongue:

It seems Mitt Romney wants to leave his mark on the American political scene. Unfortunately, so far it is not a good mark. His opposition to Arizona Senate Bill 1062, which would allow businesses with strongly held religious beliefs to deny service to gays and lesbians is awakening more Mormons to his weaknesses. But I seem to remember the LDS Church supported a similar bill in Salt lake City a couple of years ago that prohibited business and property owners from denying services to people who's preferences they disagreed with, thus infringing on their control of their own property.

Glad to know that the members are waking up to what a phony Romney is. And yes your absolutely right about prohibiting business and property owners from denying services but that was done by the tares (wolves in sheep's clothing/Gadiantons) that have infiltrated the Church and the Public Affairs Department of the church is lousy with them, they are also responsible for the so-called church "endorsement" (thanks for nothing David Burton) of the Utah Compact that Pres. Monson wouldn't sign off on. What does that tell us?
