SKMO, your spot on. When i read about the members being feared, I think it is more out of stockpiled prep and the look/ability to do the hard things. Not actual battle field prowess. I have been thinking about the strength of the Nauvoo Legion - they were the best equiped, most organized, baddest dude on the block. No other Militia would try and think of taking on the Legion. First thing after Joseph Smith's death was the rumor of the Legion coming in from Nauvoo. The mob and the Carthage Grays beat bricks (as far as I recall).

So to me it is the level of potential that keeps the wolf at bay and not proof on the battle field (that i hope never comes).
