I don't think you would want to move back east to any of those cities. Although DC just had their gun ban shot down by Justice Scalia yesterday. From illegal to own to full Constitutional carry in one day! You would probably still be arrested though and have to spend lots of $$$ in legal fees to get the charges thrown out.

I saw that chart last week on another site. One of things I noticed that was not posted by Bob was there methodology of collecting. If I recall correctly this was based off of reporting data in sales for the last year. So it is not actually reflective of total ownership. States that saw big jumps in purchases last year show up on this chart as being 'more pro gun'. It is not truely reflective. State that enjoy greater fire arms liberties were already well stocked. Changing market forces, regulatory laws, and cases over concealed carry will change which counties will show up red year to year. Every single one of my neighbors owns multiple firearms, but our county didn't make the list. I am probably have the newest guns of the lot, that's because I am the youngest. Firearms that are well taken care of last a long time and may not need to be replaced for several years. Thus a heavily armed area with an aging populace won't show up on here at all. Weber county, UT was on the list- however Weber county is now becoming one of UT's fastest growing hispanic populations, they are young and they are earning money, so they are buying firearms- the cycle goes on.

For my part, I'm going with a Mossberg 500 with two barrels: one rifled, for deer hunting, and one smooth for ducks/defense. That or the Mossberg 930 semi-auto.

Got several ARs and a crap load of ammo for them, I just don't feel comfortable doing any hunting with them. 5.56x45 or my Russian 5.45x39 aren't much for taking down elk. Plus I feel like you'd be much more likely to be perceived as a threat if someone saw you hiking around with one of those.... That's why I was hedging towards shotgun. If used properly, you can take down anything while at the same time avoiding too much attention. I'd much rather look like a hunter than a member of a militia any day.....

But then, five rounds in a shotgun vs 30 in an AR.... That's a difficult decision there.

This topic has been discussed several times on this thread and on this site. I have the same combination with a Winchester 1300, the rifled barrel is drilled and tapped for a low power scope. Myself, not being a Mossberg fan, would probable go for the Remington 870. And if I decided I needed a slug barrel I would then purchase a Mossberg barrel for my 870.

However you go, the shotgun should be your first home defense weapon. However in my opinion during an emergency it might be a bit difficult to change barrels. So I have two shotguns, one for slugs and one smoothbore, but if such an emergency should arise and the shotgun were my only choice, I would reach first for my smoothbore loaded with 00 buck.

Since I'm very well armed, in an emergency, my first choice wouldn't be my shotgun! My shotgun is located in my safe room, the room I retreat to if someone is breaking into my home.

I'm a Mossberg fan mostly because of the ambidextrous safety and the location of the pump release button. I shoot lefty due to left eye dominance issues. I keep the smooth bore on as the default barrel and the rifled barrel is usually stored away for such circumstances as I may need it. The 500 is modified with a six position butt stock and a pistol grip, and I have both a 28 inch barrel as well as the 18 inch for home defense. Also use the 00 buckshot in it for home defense, but I like that I could spice it up with a little bit of everything if I wanted

Also have a few pistols but I see those as more of a backup to my shotgun. I posed the question above because some folks and I were having a conversation about this last weekend and everyone seemed to opt for a .30-06, which I think is great for long range but not so awesome for close range or personal defense. They didn't quite seem to grasp that a shotgun can be used for both.

I have a years supply so I won't have to hunt for food during a crisis. I won't be leaving my family unprotected looking for elk or deer. And even if I did, I would have to consider how difficult it would be to get that animal home what with all the other hunters out there willing to kill me to take my meat away from me.

Hunting for food will not be an option, better have it at home!
