Alrighty, boys and girls. I will be posting some "before" numbers pre-2013 (age, height, weight, body fat %, and some measurements) including short term goals and year end goals. All those who signed up for the New Year New You, if you're still playing, take the next couple days to think about your goals (lose weight, build muscle, improve cholesterol levels, whatever), whatever numbers you feel like sharing and get yourself a notebook and pen to keep daily/weekly/monthly track. If you fail to plan, you plan to fail!

Remember that goals should be realistic. For example, if you're out of shape:

Realistic short term goal: Jog one mile non stop by the end of first month.
Unrealistic short term goal: Run a marathon by the end of first month.

Realistic long term goal: Lose 50 lbs by the end of 2013
Unrealistic long term goal: Look like the Hulk by the end of 2013

The word functional has become a kind of brand. Any movement is "functional." If I pick something up from off the ground, that is functional. So if I lift a barbell, it is functional in that it strengthens me to become stronger when I lift a laundry basket off the floor. It's a crude example, but you get the point. If you want to do functional exercise, it must be functionally specific for the end result. For example, if you play basketball, then functional training would be specific to running, weight lifting that is muscle specific to throwing a ball or shooting a basket. Shoulder presses, triceps extensions, etc, would be the case. So my opinion of functional fitness programs depened on the end goal of the the participant.

Ok I have a nutrition question for ya'll. I have a pretty serious texture issue (I'm told that a sign of autism but thats a different discussion) that prevents me from being able to eat most fruits and veggies cooked or raw. It is bad enough that I will literally start gagging and dry heaving, been like that my entire life. Nothing to do with flavor, I actually quite like most flavors, it is strictly texture. How does one supplement what I'm missing out on in my diet. I have talked to a nutritionist who tole me that the carnation instant breakfasts are a pretty good way to suppliment and I do drink those often but I also have high cholesterol so the milk isn't the best idea and they are terrible in water.

Lets hear some thoughts.

Thanks

Okay, I'm jumping in here for a moment. I just had an awareness of myself, something I hadn't given thought to before. I am overweight, it is true, but look at it this way...I'm doing a service. Some person is skinny because I'm willing to be fat. I should get credit for helping one of my heavenly brothers or sisters here on earth to be thin. Isn't this a fair analysis? (*) :-J

Actually, I was looking on the web and came across this...
bionx_montague_navigator_2.jpg
bionx_montague_navigator_2.jpg (124.62 KiB) Viewed 9569 times
It has a BionX electric motor on it. The system offers four pedal assist modes and four regeneration modes. The pedal assist modes are as follows:
1 35% of my power, supplied by the motor, is added to my peddling effort.
2 75%...
3 150%...
4 300%...

The regeneration modes make peddling much more difficult for those who want more leg muscle strength. This mode also adds charge to the battery.

I can also peddle normally having no assist whatsoever. So when I get ten or more miles away from home and I get too tired, I can get back home with battery power added.

I can also use battery power only mode and the bike will go up to 20 mph without my peddling at all. Neat, huh?

Some of you Senior citizens out there that want to get out and enjoy a casual ride in the country...this is a great way to go. In some states, an E-bike has to be licensed like a car is, so check your local laws.

The bike folds for better storage and ability to put bike into a car. This system is great for anyone, like myself, that have bad knees and lower back issues.

How about this? Just add water:

and what about making fresh fruit smoothies? can you handle that texture? (with a Blendtec blender).

Here try this:

I used to do this with ease when younger. But now it would be like trying to balance a huge cement ball on top of a pair of golf tees. :))

I'll look into that thanks. I can handle smoothies but is there any nutrient loss with blending the fruits? What about Juicing? Iwouldn't mind getting a juicer but have seen mixed reviews.

Get a Champion juicer. We bought ours online ten years ago from http://www.discountjuicers.com/, and it still runs... like a champ. :D

Another update:

I have been going to the gym on my lunch break 2-3 times a week for a little over a year now.

I hit my lifetime bench press goal in December. My shoulders feel superb. I am squatting ~275 on my sets, but want that to be around 315ish. My knees still hurt occasionally, but seems to be caused more by weather than exercise. I'm feeling good and motivated to keep going.

Nice video, Legion. There's a lot to be said about body weight workouts. I think i shared this before, but in case anyone missed it. I need to make more videos. Lots more.

Has anyone made new year's resolutions? Mine was to end this year bigger, stronger and more ripped than i have ever been. This means coming in at under 8% body fat. So far, I'm on track. Week four and still going strong.

Suggestion. In order to keep knees fit, one must keep both the front and rear muscles strong at the knees. Using ankle weights, hold back of chair or something high enough to help you stand straight for balance. Raise ankles, (alternating of course unless you want to end up on two broken knees due to raising both ankles at the same time :D ). up to butt in 1 or 2 sets of 10-15 times..each visit to the Gym, thus strengthening the rear muscles in your knees. Makes a huge difference, and is very good for knee rehabilitation. Could even help reduce any inflammation or arthritis symptoms.

Also, try lower weight and lift or push very slow as many times as you can. Do you feel the burn in your muscles? This is another way to truly be fit.
If you know this already, ignore this.

Right now I am round, because it is a shape as well. =)) I still go walking with my Chihuahua one or two miles fairly often as weather permits, at 66. Helps to keep my cheeks from hitting the floor on both sides of the throne. :)) Just kidding, about the throne story, that is. ;) Actually, I'm slender, but no one else but me can tell. When I walk down the street, people sing a new version of Thunder Road. Some people say they feel ground tremors, but hey, I have to be able to make an impression somehow, right? :|

BTW, is there freedom on the forum for allowance to fit in the club?

Nice vid! Love the wheels!!! Nice channel...I'm subscribed!

I'm just getting into the whole bodyweight training....lots of fun after years of weights and fairly strict movements. Simple thing like a push up and there's literally hundreds of variations from easy to extreme punishment...

One of my drill instructors in boot camp held the Marine Corps pushup record at that time (1992)...425 straight (Marine Corps style 4 count...which is 2 regular).

...and muscle ups..

...and the flag...

...pistol squat...

Hey and man alive am I glad to have finally gotten to this thread. I have a series of questions and really need help. First just a bit of background of where I was and how far I have fallen. In High school I was known as having the strongest legs of anyone in my high school's history and that still holds today although we did not have those famous XXXhundred pound lift club charts and tee shirts. I was leg pressing just a bit under a ton for 5 reps. I was benching 415lbs. I joined the navy, got involved in the group that is rather physical and grew stronger still. I got out of the Navy, became a cop, ran like the wind, worked out but did not work out to get huge. Never used drugs or enhancers at all except for one brand of protein shake mix we used on the football team.

After 22 years in law enforcement with the last decade being in Academy instruction, I retired. I picked up a moonlighting job at our local farm supply store as manager and was once again recruited to go back in to law enforcement. I began working out again but not with the super heavy stuff. Then in one day, I bent down to pick up a boat trailer tire/wheel assembly weighing a mere 13 pounds. I felt something pop and a customer actually heard it. I turned deathly ill, and could not straighten back upright. After weeks and several different Workers Comp doctors telling me I just had pulled/strained muscles, I took a bad fall at home while walking on my back deck. My legs just gave out and I fell down several steps. When I got to the Doctor's office, he finally relented and referred me to a Neurosurgeon. The Neuro was a Navy Doc who had actually served on one of the same ships I served on. So we had the right combination of things in common and he conducted a very detailed and much more in depth study and battery of tests than the Workers Comp people requested. What he found was severe nerve damage in my spine. He then contacted my attorney and told him that I was far more damaged than just with muscle issues. Longer story short, I was finally granted permission to seek a spine specialist.

What turned out to be the problem was, I had 6 shattered (as in exploded) discs in both my Thoracic and Lumbar regions. T-10, 11 and 12 completely shattered and in doing so had cut the spinal cord sheath in several places which of course caused a large volume of spinal fluid leakage. The Lumbar discs which were also shattered in to shards severed nerves and other lacerations around my spine and Sacro area. When the Surgeon found this he ordered an immediate emergency surgery which as he explained to me was to attempt to prevent paralysis which was a mere sneeze away due to the way my spinal cord was being pinched down upon by the vertebrae that had shifted badly. I was told that I would likely never walk over a few steps at a time even with and after surgery. The Surgery was successful in preventing surgery but I was indeed unable to walk, run or even swim. I was put on massive amounts of Morphine, Oxycontin, Fentanyl, and several others and was on various combinations, dosages and methods of introduction.

I was on this regimen from 2003 thru 2013(until may of 13) I had gained well over 60 lbs, had a massive heart attack and was so weak I could not open a jar off the store shelves. No stamina at all and was going down almost daily. Then in May of 2013, I hit rock bottom and through a promise I had made to my Brother just a few days before he passed away unexpectedly, I quit ALL the pain meds Cold Turkey.

It was ugly for several days but because of Priesthood Blessings and prayers from friends and family, I made it through it. The strain was hard on my body and we all worried about my heart being able to handle the sudden change. Now to where I am right now.....

I have a friend who is Russian and was Spetsnaz and a true measure of a man. He is not a Strength Coach or teacher, he is just hardcore Russian who is now an American citizen. He uses the Kettle Bell exclusively for his strength and conditioning training and suggested that I take that up. I now have a ten pound kettle bell but I am still quite apprehensive about the types of exercises that would be safe for me to do with my back being the major concern at this point. My last visit with my Cardio about a month ago found that my Heart is pumping on all cyclinders, and is beating strong and steady. He said from the cardio standpoint I am good to go with whatever exercise I feel good about doing.I just have to take it easy at first to make sure all is good to go. But, he said that he couldn't see any reason why I can't rapidly work up from easy to moderate to strenuous (within an reasonable time frame).

Now my questions begin: I want desperately to get my body back in to good strong shape. My Cardio endurance is sufficient at this point to be able to maintain about 20 minutes of aerobic activity. I only need a couple minutes now to recover and can begin again. What do you suggest as a starting point in the types of exercises? Are you familiar with the Kettle Bell? If so, do you have any suggestions as to the type of motions to go with to get started, Rep numbers etc?

Thanks a ton (no pun intended) for starting this thread discussion and for considering my situation.
S of T.

I forgot to add, I have also had major knee reconstruction surgery due to a blind side clip by a two legged tank playing church basketball. Screws, plates, and cages are in my spine(T level) and left knee. My back is fused at the T-10-13 levels and I do not have a full range of motion in my knee. Close but not quite a full range.

SOT--my husband who is a master herbalist has had success with several people rebuilding both spinal and joint injuries with nutrition and herbs. He successfully rebuilt his own knee that the Air Force drs. wanted to operate on (miniscus and tendons/ligaments torn and one detached, I think). He went on for another 10 years in the Air Force full active duty, and is still able to run and do whatever he wants with no pain. Taught two guys how to rebuild backs: on one guy with a broken back after an accident, another guy with 15 years damage after shrapnel in the spine and a motorcycle accident 10 years later. If you are interested, contact me and I'll put you in touch with him.
