Soul still in Topical Guide and Guide to the Scriptures

Post by inho »

Are you saying that it has been in the Bible Dictionary before?
I looked at archived pages in web.archive.org and couldn't find it in any of the versions.

It does appear in the Topical Guide. Guide to the Scriptures gives the following definition:
The scriptures speak of souls in three ways: (1) spirit beings, both premortal and postmortal (Alma 40:11–14; Abr. 3:23); (2) a spirit and a body united in mortality (D&C 88:15; Abr. 5:7); and (3) an immortal, resurrected person whose spirit and body have become inseparably connected (2 Ne. 9:13; D&C 88:15–16).

I distinctly remember it being there pre-2010; weird it's not there now. When it was there it defined the soul as the spirit and body together so it could be represented as Body + Spirit = a living soul as when God breathed life into Adam and he became a living soul.

I bought my current scripture quad in 1995. There is no definition of soul in the Bible dictionary.

Weird that such a common word is missing; anyone have one from 2002-2008?

"Spirit + body = soul" comes from D&C 88:15. I think that in the Bible the word 'soul' is usually used differently. That is why that definition is not in the Bible Dictionary.

I think Tracy Chapman's mama had it right regarding the 'soul'. It's all you got:
"All That You Have Is Your Soul"

Oh my mama told me
'Cause she say she learned the hard way
Say she wanna spare the children
She say don't give or sell your soul away
'Cause all that you have is your soul

Don't be tempted by the shiny apple
Don't you eat of a bitter fruit
Hunger only for a taste of justice
Hunger only for a world of truth
'Cause all that you have is your soul

I was a pretty young girl once
I had dreams I had high hopes
I married a man he stole my heart away
He gave his love but what a high price I paid
All that you have is your soul

Why was I such a young fool
Thought I'd make history
Making babies was the best I could do
Thought I'd made something that could be mine forever
Found out the hard way one can't possess another
And all that you have is your soul

I thought thought that I could find a way
To beat the system
To make a deal and have no debts to pay
I'd take it all take it all I'd run away
Me for myself first class and first rate
But all that you have is your soul

Here I am waiting for a better day
A second chance
A little luck to come my way
A hope to dream a hope that I can sleep again
And wake in the world with a clear conscience and clean hands
'All that you have is your soul

All that you have
All that you have
All that you have Is your soul

My 1981 quad has nothing for "soul" either. But the entry for "spirit" does include the following:
Every person is literally a son or a daughter of God, having been born as a spirit to Heavenly Parents previous to being born to mortal parents on the earth (Heb. 12:9). Thus each one of us is a dual being: an immortal spirit body, clothed with a body of flesh and bone. As defined in scripture, the spirit and the body constitute the mortal soul (D&C 88:15; see also Gen. 2:7; Moses 3:7–9; Abr. 5:7).
This is also the case in more recent editions. Maybe this is what you were thinking of?

I only ever checked the definition of "soul" on-line; it must of been another source although none are as concise.

A + B = a living soul, is a little riddle that I came up with where B is Body.

A represents an A word that many are familiar with, but don't realize how well it fits Genesis 2:7
And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.
If you're done guessing then click "A represents" above to check your answer. :ymhug:

The keyword here appears to be "mortal", which raises the question "what is a pre-mortal" soul, and are they alive?

Life is another common word missing from the bible dictionary. :-\

Alive, Live and Living are also missing as is Dead, but Death is listed https://www.lds.org/scriptures/bd/death ... g&letter=D

Now...are there any of these verses that appear to give a differing meaning? I'll strike some verses, underline others and remark on others, those that may be further discussed. If any I struck-out are pertinent, speak out.

man became a living soul, Gen. 2:7 (1 Cor. 15:45; Moses 3:7; Abr. 5:7). Seems to corroborate D&C 88:15

love the Lord … with all thy soul, Deut. 6:5 (Matt. 22:37; Mark 12:30; Luke 10:27).

serve the Lord … with all thy soul, Deut. 10:12 (11:13; 2 Ne. 25:29).

none can keep alive his own soul, Ps. 22:29.

hear, and your soul shall live, Isa. 55:3.

if thou draw out thy soul to the hungry, Isa. 58:10.

he that taketh warning shall deliver his soul, Ezek. 33:5.

fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body, Matt. 10:28. Does this contradict D&C 88:15?

gain the whole world, and lose his own soul, Matt. 16:26 (Mark 8:36).

My soul is exceeding sorrowful, Matt. 26:38 (Mark 14:34).

Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord, Luke 1:46. What does Mary mean by these words?

this night thy soul shall be required, Luke 12:20 (12:15–21).

multitude of them that believed were of one heart and of one soul, Acts 4:32. One soul?

pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved, 1 Thes. 5:23. Spirit, soul and body D&C 88:15?
