How about Vietnam, a war that was so massively unpopular that when it eventually ended "the people" unfairly blamed the soldiers who'd gone to risk their lives. You think either "the people" or the soldiers were fooled into thinking it was anyone but the government leaders who wanted that war?

How are Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, or any of our other military actions for the last several decades any different?

Agreed Fairminded. Legion doesn't seem to understand the power of the principle of concentrated benefits versus diffuse costs in a government system like we currently have in the USA.

How much is propaganda and how much is accurate? How many opposed the war enough to show up and vote the bums out of office who had a say in it? How many were pacified by the Warren Commission despite the fact that its plainly obvious when the secret service was called off just prior to rounding the corner?

How many care enough to do their homework? How many prefer just to bury their head in the ground because life is currently comfortable? How many refuse to believe otherwise because they can't handle the paradigm that puts them in?

The Business Plot was open treason several decades prior to that event. No giant revolution or unification of the masses to see that justice was done.

If even 50% of the people would completely unite behind a single issue I sincerely believe they would accomplish their aim.

No worries. John has never completely revealed his system - at least to my knowledge. The one who has is Charles Wilber albeit with a focus on tomatoes.

http://www.amazon.com/How-Grow-World-Re ... 0911311572" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Despite the focus on tomatoes his system is completely laid out (as far as he has revealed anyways) and includes pointers for a variety of things besides tomatoes. The basic system probably works for just about everything. It takes reading the book multiple times (at least for me) as well as attention to detail to pick up on all the little subtle details. And success comes from implementation of the whole system and not from one or two little tricks. Challenging to fully implement but you can always adapt it to the level of gardening you want to go to.

From what I have read on forums and chats about John's stuff....its basically Charles system on steroids and centric to growing in Palmer Alaska. Compost tea is a big step up from Charles' system and from what I understand Elaine Ingham is one of the leading researchers on it.

I would suggest following up Charles' book with "Teaming with Microbes" by Alaska gardeners Jeff Lowenfels and Wayne Lewis. That will give you a solid knowledge base to work from and they work into crafting compost tea towards the end of the book.

http://www.amazon.com/Teaming-Microbes- ... 102&sr=1-2" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

You could acquire some of Elaine's expensive field manuals or do further internet research to expand on what they provide in Teaming with Microbes.

In my research on John's stuff I think one secret is that he has combined all of the above as well as perhaps working with some special mixes of fungi. If you want to explore more of the world of fungi I suggest starting with "Mycelium Running" by Paul Stamets.

http://www.amazon.com/Mycelium-Running- ... 25&sr=1-14" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Here's his interesting little speech at TED -

Paul's company Fungi Perfecti also has decently priced mycorrhizal fungi that in my experience are live active specimens (rapidly expand and grow in my compost tea bucket making heavy slime). I've also bought a number of mushroom kits and plugs from them. Just got my first harvest of Oyster mushrooms out of the garden this last week.

I personally think worms play a key role and my favorite worm book is an old (1947) text by Thomas Jason Barrett. About to start building my own version of his Earthmaster Earthworm Culture Bed design.

This is the best blog I've found on worm farming and assorted experiments (also buy my worms through him).

After you get your system worked out you can experiment with 4 season growing. Eliot Coleman provides good source of knowledge for a foundation to begin your personal experiments.

http://www.amazon.com/Four-Season-Harve ... d_sim_b_65" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

You can also get into the raised beds and square foot gardening to advance or tweak on your basic system developed from information above. Mel is the man on this.

http://www.amazon.com/All-New-Square-Fo ... 047&sr=1-1" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I do raised beds and like the square foot concept for planning and management of space. Also I do 4 season growing (just about to harvest onions, lettuce, kale, etc started late last year) with low tunnel hoops attached to my raised beds. You can find info on cost effective (best bang for the buck) low tunnels here -

A little maven venting....

A incoming CME shock swept past our planet at 03:25 UTC. A geomagnetic sudden impulse of 31 nT was detected by the Boulder, Colorado magnetometer. The ACE Spacecraft did show a solar wind increase to near 400 km/s. Only minor geomagnetic activity resulted at very high latitudes.

The Koch Brothers – Exposed!

But no need to invent – Charles and David Koch are the real deal. Over the past 30-some years, they've poured more than 100 million dollars into a sprawling network of foundations, think tanks, front groups, advocacy organizations, lobbyists and GOP lawmakers, all to the glory of their hard-core libertarian agenda. They don't oppose big government so much as government – taxes, environmental protections, safety-net programs, public education: the whole bit. (By all accounts, the Kochs are true believers; they really buy that road-to-serfdom stuff about the the holiness of free markets. Still, you can't help but notice how neatly their philosophy lines up with their business interests.)

An unprecedented April heat wave brought a second day of sizzling temperatures to the Western U.S. yesterday, where temperatures ranging 20 - 30 degrees above normal have toppled numerous all-time April heat records. Nearly every weather station in the Inter-mountain West has broken, tied, or come within 1 - 2 °F of their all-time record April heat record since Sunday. Most notably, the 113°F measured at Furnace Creek in Death Valley, California on Sunday, April 22 was tied for the hottest April temperature ever recorded in the U.S. According to wunderground weather historian Christopher C. Burt, the hottest reliable April temperature ever measured in the U.S. was 113°F in Parker, Arizona in 1898. A 113°F reading was also taken at Catarina, Texas in April 1984, and at Greenland Ranch in Death Valley on April 24, 1946. A hotter 118°F reading measured at Volcano Springs, CA in April 1898 is considered unreliable, since we don't know much about the exposure conditions or if the thermometers were even in shelters at remote California desert stations back in the 1880s and 1890s. The previous hottest April day in Death Valley was 111°F. Yesterday, the high temperature in Death Valley "cooled off" to 110°F, merely the fourth highest April temperature ever measured there. The heat wave peaked Sunday and Monday, and temperatures will be closer to normal for the remainder of the week.

A long lasting Geomagnetic Storm that reached very close to the Strong G3 Level took place Monday night and early Tuesday morning. Visible Aurora was seen in many locations and Ham Radio operators were able to make numerous contacts via the Aurora on the 6 meter (50mhz) amateur radio band. This storm was due to a sharply south pointing component of the Interplanetary Magnetic Field (IMF) that allowed the solar wind to flow in and generate aurora. Things are now starting to return to quieter levels.

Xalitzintla - Residents at the foot of Mexico's Popocatepetl volcano no longer sleep soundly since the towering mountain roared back into action over a week ago, spewing out a hail of rocks, steam and ash. Locals said that most frightening was the unusual rumbling coming from the volcano, which many compared to an aircraft turbine.

"We've never heard a noise like it," said Maximiliano Grajales.

About 4.5 million people live on the outskirts of the volcano, which lies at the crossroads of the states of Puebla, Morelos and Mexico.

A leading earthquake scientist has warned that the planet could be cracking up after a series of massive quakes in just 48 hours.

Expert Gheorghe Marmureanu - from Romania's National Institute of Earth Physics - says 39 quakes had hit the globe within two days.

The series started with two massive quakes in Indonesia measuring 8.6 and 8.2 on the Richter scale rapidly followed by three more only slightly smaller in Mexico within hours.

"There is no doubt that something is seriously wrong. There have been too many strong earthquakes," said Marmureanu.

He added: "The quakes are a surprise that cannot be easily explained by current scientific knowledge. With the Indonesian quake for example, statistically, there should be one big earthquake in this part of Asia every 500 years. However, since 2004, there were already three quakes with a magnitude of over 8, which is not normal.

Rep. Allen West (R-Fla.), a retired Army lieutenant colonel, sends THE WEEKLY STANDARD an email commenting on the Marines' video, and has given us permission to publish it.
I have sat back and assessed the incident with the video of our Marines urinating on Taliban corpses. I do not recall any self-righteous indignation when our Delta snipers Shugart and Gordon had their bodies dragged through Mogadishu. Neither do I recall media outrage and condemnation of our Blackwater security contractors being killed, their bodies burned, and hung from a bridge in Fallujah.

All these over-emotional pundits and armchair quarterbacks need to chill. Does anyone remember the two Soldiers from the 101st Airborne Division who were beheaded and gutted in Iraq?

The Marines were wrong. Give them a maximum punishment under field grade level Article 15 (non-judicial punishment), place a General Officer level letter of reprimand in their personnel file, and have them in full dress uniform stand before their Battalion, each personally apologize to God, Country, and Corps videotaped and conclude by singing the full US Marine Corps Hymn without a teleprompter.

As for everyone else, unless you have been shot at by the Taliban, shut your mouth, war is hell.

Pentagon sets up new spy agency to eavesdrop on the world

The Pentagon is to create a new spy service to focus on global strategic threats and the challenges posed by countries including Iran, North Korea and China. The move will bring to 17 the total number of intelligence organisations in the US.

The Defense Clandestine Service is supposed to work closely with its counterpart in the CIA, the National Clandestine Service, recruiting spies from the ranks of the Pentagon’s Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) and deploying them globally to boost the flow of intelligence on perceived long-term threats to US national interests.

US military news website Insidedefense said the defence department had asked Congress for authority for spies to work undercover posing as businessmen when conducting covert operations abroad.

The move by the defence secretary, Leon Panetta, emerged in briefings to US journalists.

“You have to do global coverage,” a senior defence official said, according to the Los Angeles Times. The new service would seek to “make sure officers are in the right locations to pursue those requirements”, the Washington Post quoted the official as saying.

Marine Corps discharges sergeant for Facebook posts critical of Obama
SAN DIEGO – The Marine Corps said Wednesday it has decided to discharge a sergeant for criticizing President Barack Obama on Facebook.

The Corps said Sgt. Gary Stein will be given an other-than-honorable discharge for violating Pentagon policy limiting speech of service members.

The San Diego-area Marine has served nearly 10 years in the Marine Corps. He has said he was exercising his free-speech rights.

The discharge will mean he loses all benefits.

A federal judge previously denied a request to block military discharge proceedings against Stein, who called Obama an enemy on Facebook.

U.S. District Judge Marilyn Huff ruled then that the military has the right to respond to Stein's online comments in a case that has called into question the Pentagon's policies regarding social media and the limits regarding the speech of active duty military personnel.

Attorney J. Mark Brewer told Huff the entire process violates the First Amendment, which federal courts have the right to uphold.

Huff disagreed, calling Stein's postings "truly troubling." Service members have had their speech limited since the Civil War, especially if their comments are believed to disrupt good order and discipline.

The judge pointed out Stein's March 1 comments on a Facebook page used by Marine Corps meteorologists in which the sergeant stated, "Screw Obama and I will not follow all orders from him."

We are losing freedom-of-speech and freedom to seek redress of grievances.
I deduce this also from my own experience, when I was very publicly on "administrative leave"; this was very painful to me personally, to go through that with a public announcement, as you might understand.

However, that very day (a Thursday), at what turned out to be my LAST class teaching Physics, I felt a solid prompting to bear my testimony of the Savior to the class. It seemed so out of place, however, so I just about dismissed the thought -- when it came again, along with a peaceful feeling. So I paused right there and bore my testimony to the students whom I had come to love. My parting testimony to them, as it turned out -- later that afternoon I was informed.

It was a great comfort to me in that personally painful and overwhelming (almost) time -- to reflect that the Lord was still mindful of me and guiding me.

How glad I was that I followed that prompting!
And that was my last physics class ever, as I was informed that not only was I on administrative leave but that I was not be allowed to teach anymore-- you can read about that part in the newspapers of Sept 2006.

I hope this Marine has the Lord to support him.

I learned that the Lord will not forsake us -- but "friends and colleagues"...

They call that a "General Discharge!" But the words Honorable Discharge is still on the certificate, just in smaller letters. The guy had less than 10 years, he didn't lose any bene's, there were none to lose. He was warned, ignored the warning, if he had complied he'd still be a marine. I suspect the guy really wanted out of the Corp! He only had to wait a short time for a new President-----

The military personnel choose to live in a dictatorship so the rest of the country (civilians) can live in a democratic republic if they so choose. The military is a servant of the people tasked with protecting them and their interests. The military falls under the executive branch with the President of the United States as Commander-in-Chief. The President is elected according the rules established and supported by the people....at least the majority.

Sure there is corruption. Sure there is conspiracy. And for sure there are a group of complacent people.

All that said, the man put himself in a bind and got what was coming to him. You can lose a month's pay and a rank over a sunburn that disrupts your job. Its a voluntary job and folks accept that when they join. You sign your life away and become government property to be expended, abused, misused, and possibly terminated at will. Suck it up!

Another round of unprecedented April heat hit the U.S. yesterday, and this time it was Texas' turn to see large sections of the state with the hottest April temperatures in over a century of record keeping. Seven major airports in Texas set all-time April high temperatures yesterday:

Amarillo, TX: 99° (old April record 98° on 4/22/1989 and 4/22/1965)
Lubbock, TX: 101° (old April record 100° on 4/16/1925 and /22/1989)
Dalhart, TX: 96° (old April record 94° on 4/22/1989)
Borger, TX: 99° (tied April record set on 4/22/1965)
Midland, TX: 104° (old April record 101° on 4/21/1989)
Abilene, TX: 104° (old April record 102° on 4/16/1925)
Childress, TX: 106° (old April record 102° on three occasions, most recently on 4/3/2011)

According to wunderground's weather historian Christopher C. Burt, both Texas and Oklahoma came within 2°F of their all-time April state high temperature record yesterday. Altus, Oklahoma hit 104°, falling 2° short of the April state record of 106° set at the Magnum Research Station in 1972. In the Texas Mesonet, it hit 111° at Knox City 3NW, which is just 2° short of the Texas April state record of 113° set at Catarina in 1984. According to Mr. Burt, What is amazing is that Knox City is in the north-central part of the state, not down in the Rio Grande region like Catarina. The 111° would probably be pretty close to whatever the all-time hottest temp for ANY month might be in that location (probably around 115°). On Sunday this week, Nevada just missed setting their April state high temperature record, when the mercury hit 105° in Laughlin (April state record: 106° in 1989.)

During March 2012, an astonishing 32% of all the major airports in the U.S. set all-time March high temperature records. For the year-to-date, there have been 184 new all-time monthly high temperature records set at the major airports, and 6 all-time monthly low temperature records. Not surprisingly, the period January - March this year has been the warmest such period in the U.S. since record keeping began in 1895.

Heavy rains kill nine in Haiti
The rainy season has begun on the Caribbean island of Hispaniola, where heavy rains that began on Monday have triggered mudslides and floods that killed nine people. Nearly 500,000 people are still homeless in Haiti from the January 2010 earthquake, making the country highly vulnerable to flooding disasters. Heavy flooding was also a problem this week in the neighboring Dominican Republic, where 11,000 people were evacuated; no deaths were reported there, however. Precipitation forecasts from the GFS model suggest that the worst is over for Hispaniola, with the axis of greatest moisture expected to move west of the island today. This surge of moisture will bring heavy rains to Jamaica, Cuba, the Bahamas, Cayman Islands, and South Florida during the remainder of the week.

Europe faces Japan syndrome as credit demand implodes

Demand for housing loans fell 70pc in Portugal, 44pc in Italy, and 42pc in the Netherlands in the first quarter of 2012. Enterprise loans fell 38pc in Italy. The survey took place in late March and early April, and therefore includes the second of Mario Draghi’s €1 trillion liquidity infusion (LTRO).

The ECB said net demand for loans had fallen "to a significantly lower level than had been expected in the fourth quarter of 2011, with the decline driven in particular by a further sharp drop in financing needs for fixed investment." Demand fell 43pc for household loans, and 30pc for non-bank firms.

State Threatens to Shut Down Nutrition Blogger

CHARLOTTE — The North Carolina Board of Dietetics/Nutrition is threatening to send a blogger to jail for recounting publicly his battle against diabetes and encouraging others to follow his lifestyle.

Steve Cooksey has learned that the definition, at least in the eyes of the state board, is expansive.

When he was hospitalized with diabetes in February 2009, he decided to avoid the fate of his grandmother, who eventually died of the disease. He embraced the low-carb, high-protein Paleo diet, also known as the “caveman” or “hunter-gatherer” diet. The diet, he said, made him drug- and insulin-free within 30 days. By May of that year, he had lost 45 pounds and decided to start a blog about his success.

But this past January the state diatetics and nutrition board decided Cooksey’s blog — Diabetes-Warrior.net — violated state law. The nutritional advice Cooksey provides on the site amounts to “practicing nutrition,” the board’s director says, and in North Carolina that’s something you need a license to do.

Unless Cooksey completely rewrites his 3-year-old blog, he could be sued by the licensing board. If he loses the lawsuit and refuses to take down the blog, he could face up to 120 days in jail.

The board’s director says Cooksey has a First Amendment right to blog about his diet, but he can’t encourage others to adopt it unless the state has certified him as a dietitian or nutritionist.

The death in prison of Art Nadel last week left numerous questions about the scandal that may never be answered.

Authorities will now be rolling up the sidewalks on the Art Nadel scandal, continuing the trend of American scandals going unexplained and largely unexplored stretching back to Iran Contra.

Art Nadel was a disbarred NY attorney with a recent work history consisting of playing gigs in second rate piano bars. Yet apparently the FBI's best "thinking" is that Nadel was a lounge act who stole $166 million… all by himself.

Was Art Nadel the mastermind of a huge financial fraud, or just a hapless front man? A Ponzi all star? Or a Ponzi patsy? We may never know.

Goldman Sachs and Wachovia Bank are names with a lot of mud on them. Both firms have recently paid huge fines for criminal behavior for which individuals spend decades in prison.

Art Nadel's use of Goldman and Wachovia in tandem seems too prescient for a man of his meager talents. So, how did this arrangement came about?

“Nadel engaged in at least a dozen regular financial transactions that were serious criminal violations,” a recent lawsuit by the Federal receiver in the case alleges. About them all, Wachovia remained "inexplicably unconcerned."

The suit states baldly, “For Wachovia's failure, there is no legitimate explanation."

And the attorney for the Federal receiver who filed the lawsuit, Terry Smiljanich, told me flatly, “Wachovia has a history of assisting and profiting from the commission of fraud by the bank’s account holders.”

The second thing about the Nadel scandal which seems more than odd concerns the omission in news stories of his death in prison of the fact that—while his Ponzi scheme was in full flight—Nadel bought the notorious Huffman Aviation at the Venice Airport, the place where both terrorists who flew planes into the World Trade Center learned to fly.

Apparently the mainstream media did not find it significant that Nadel used a goodly portion of his ill-gotten gains to buy a flight school whose name will forever live in ignominy.

In fact, a Google search for “Art Nadel” and Huffman Aviation” turns up 600 results, all of which link to stories published first on this website.

What do Ponzi schemers, drug traffickers, terrorist hijackers & private equity capital firms investing money from Arab sovereign wealth funds have in common? As the buzz about Facebook’s upcoming IPO intensifies, it may be important to note that criminals have social networks too.

The basis for organized crime— interlocking social networks, or what used to be called “relationships”—is always the same, across time, space, and culture.

“He’s connected,” accompanied with a shrug, seems to be a universal statement of the way things are.

Would they were different.
