For four years, 2010-2013, distinguished neuroscientists, and representatives of wisdom traditions such as Tibetan Buddhism, Indigenous Native American, and Religious scholars have met to examine and discuss the nature of compassion. Stanford University's CCARE Center and the Telluride Institute continue to work together to investigate the science, the cultural practices, and the educational potential of compassion.

Currently, the Telluride Institute is taking the lead in the conversation to designate the Town of Telluride as a "compassionate city." The process involves working with Telluride officials to become a member of a network of designated "compassionate cities" through the International Campaign for Compassionate Cities. Beyond this important designation, TI is working behind the scenes to organize a resource hub for the many organizations in our community involved in "compassion work"--from food security, to health, to jobs. TI is committed to understanding and applying compassion in the local and regional community.

Over the past couple of weeks, numerous people have sent me links to articles about DNA research results from a femur discovered at the Sima de los Huesos in Spain. Most of the headlines to the articles are variations of this: "400,000-year-old human DNA poses mystery." Many people know that I believe humans like us existed further back in time than most scientists are now prepared to accept. Most scientists believe that humans like us first appeared less than 200,000 years ago. So, perhaps thinking that the reports from Spain support my ideas, people send me the links. However, we have to understand that when scientists and science reporters use the word "human" in connection with the discovery from Spain, they do not mean humans like us. They mean more primtive human ancestors or relatives of human ancestors. Most scientists attribute the 400,000-year-old bones from Sima de los Huesos to early Neandertals, or to Homo heidelbergensis, a European relative of the apeman Homo erectus. But in my book Forbidden Archeology I documented fossil evidence showing that humans like us were present in Europe at 400,000 years ago. For example, in the nineteenth century, the French archeologist Jacques Boucher des Perthes found an anatomically modern human jaw in his excavations at the Moulin Quignon site in Abbeville, in northeastern France. According to modern geologists, the formation there is about 400,000 years old. So there is evidence that humans like us were existing 400,000 years ago in Europe, but the recent evidence from Spain is not it—at least not from w

The Myth of Accountability and the Death of Michael Brown

I remember the hilarity of popping birthday balloons when I was a kid -- that tiny, anxious hiatus between pressing some sharp object against the balloon’s skin and the sudden, irreversible explosion. Then racing around and retrieving the balloon scraps, stretching them out tightly in front of our eyes, and seeing the world and each other as pink, blue, yellow, green. It was all so funny and compelling. Each tinted lens offered a new explanation of the world. Another way to see.

The explosion in Ferguson has left us a lot of scraps of American culture through which to view what happened and what it means. It’s hard to see all the pieces at once, to make them fit into one narrative. One lens sees racism -- individual, historical, structural. Another sees police brutality and the militarization of the police. Another focuses on our gun culture and how for a large segment of this country to condemn any gun violence, no matter how outrageous, is to somehow restrict our freedoms. Another turns the killing inside out and treats Darren Wilson as the victim. Another sees power disparities, class disparities and economic disparities. Another sees media delight in all the titillating violence breeding more violence that stimulates product sales. Another promotes fear -- a different fear depending what race you are, but fear of the other, nevertheless. And another simply sees the grief of Michael Brown’s parents.

Race, power, violence, profit, fear, grief. What a flammable brew to fuel America’s fearsome engine! And if it keeps the motor humming, why substitute alternative energies?

However, the lens I want to look through is Accountability. President Obama has counselled us to let the legal system work. We are a nation of laws, he says. The intended implication is that whether you are (were) Michael Brown, or Darren Wilson, the President, the CEO of CitiGroup, the head of the NSA, the CIA, or Exxon-Mobil, or in any position that either has or protects wealth and power, the law is the same for you as it is for everyone else. Sadly, no more disingenuous remark could be made about this country. Could we find an adult in this country who believes we are a nation of equal laws? And yet, that notion of equal laws is one of the pillars that supports any pipe dream of democracy. Even while they work tirelessly to undermine it, people in power have to keep pretending equal accountability exists. Otherwise, they couldn’t pretend democracy exists.

We will probably never know what really happened between Darren Wilson and Michael Brown. Neither of the two would tell the same story, and, with one dead, it’s certainly not in the other’s interest to tell anything except what excuses his action. It’s the oldest technique in the world to demonize the victim to justify the violence that destroys him. It’s the oldest because it plays on fear and prejudice and creates just enough doubt that maybe the victim had it coming. However, I also remember as a kid, when I wasn’t popping balloons, watching the cowboy movies where the good cowboy defeated the bad guy by shooting the gun out of his hand, or shooting him in the shoulder, the leg, the foot. There was no need to kill him. The good cowboy was an expert at protecting people, even his opponent. When did the role of cop change from protector to killer?

But more importantly, if I were Darren Wilson and thinking about a nation of laws, I would be asking by what right should anyone hold me accountable? If a president can lie his country into war and be honored for it, if top CIA officers can lie about torture and be given raises, if Wall Street tycoons can defraud the nation, nearly destroy the economy, erase the savings of millions of people and be handed million dollar bonuses, if top executives at Exxon can lie about Global Warming, if it’s legal for political candidates to lie to voters in television ads, if the head of the NSA can lie to Congress, why should I, Darren Wilson, suffer for shooting a Black teenager? That would be hypocritical, wouldn’t it? Think of the massive violence inherent in those other lies! And, I, Darren, just did what lots of cops have done & paid no price.

When a country embraces a culture of unequal laws, to prosecute any person in a position of power is hypocritical. When people have fewer & fewer rights, rights belong to power. And power’s most exalted right is hypocrisy with impunity. So, whether Darren Wilson is guilty or not, his association with power will protect him. Justice is not an abstract, ideal concept, it’s what’s defined by those who own it.

And, of course, Darren Wilson can say he has a clean conscience! If Dick Cheney can say that, why can’t he?

Marian Wright Edelman, one of this country’s tireless advocates for poor, marginalized and neglected children, asks rhetorically, "What’s wrong with our children? Adults telling children to be honest while lying and cheating. Adults telling children to not be violent while marketing and glorifying violence… I believe that adult hypocrisy is the biggest problem children face in America." It’s not only the biggest problem children face in America, it’s the biggest problem America faces. Hidden behind that mask of righteous hypocrisy is a refusal to see who we are, what we have become, and where we are going.

A balloon has popped in Ferguson. Until they are cleaned up and hidden away, the scraps are everywhere. Each one provides a lens to help understand what happened there and why. Pick one up, stretch it tight, take a look.

When power chooses to hold no one accountable, it’s up to the people. As Thoreau said, only we can make the law free.

Iron Shirt (traditional Chinese: 鐵衫; simplified Chinese: 铁衫; pinyin: tiě shān; Cantonese: tit1 saam3) is a form of hard style martial art exercise for protecting the human body from impacts in a fight. This is one of the 72 arts of the Shaolin Temple. Some martial arts are based on the idea that a correctly trained body can withstand more damage than one that is untrained. Iron Shirt is said to be a series of exercises using many post stances, herbs, qigong and body movements to cause the body's natural energy (qi) to reinforce its structural strength. Practitioners believe that directing energy to parts of the body can reinforce these parts of the body to take blows against them. In the Shaolin version of Iron Shirt, the practitioner would do things such as lying on a stump or supporting tablets of granite on the chest with the goal of toughening the body.

According to 13th generation lineage Tai He ("Great Harmony") Wudangquan Master Fan Ke Ping (Chinese: 范克平), a collector of rare Kung fu manuals, Zhou Tong, the archery teacher of General Yue Fei, practiced Shènzi bādà Qígōng (Chinese: 肾子八大奇功 - "Testicle Eight Outstanding Techniques").[1] A book of this style supposedly appeared during the Ming Dynasty and was taught on Wudang Mountain. It became a "hereditary style", taught only to close family members.[2] Other styles include the Hǔ Xiào Jīn Zhōng Zhào (Chinese: 虎啸金钟罩 – “Tiger Shouting Golden Bell Exercise"), Tie Bu Shan ("Five Phoenix Iron Shirt Work") and the Wu Feng Qi Ming Gui Xi Su ("Five Phoenix Combined Shouting Tortoise Resting Method"). Zhou Tong supposedly learned these skills from an “unknown master” and passed it along. During the Ming Dynasty, Daoist Priest Deng Kun Lun (Chinese: 邓坤伦) is fabled to have learned the set and later published a book in 1426 called Dà Sòng Quān Nèi Dì Yī Gāo Shǒu Zhōu Tóng Zhēn Chuán Hǔ Xiào Jīn Zhōng Zhào Fú Qì Liàn Xíng Mì Shù (Chinese: 大宋圈内第一高手周侗真传虎啸金钟罩服气炼形秘术 - “Great Song Circle Internal Sequence First Master Zhou Tong True Line Tiger Shouting Golden Bell Exercise Build Secret Technique”).[3][4] There is a VCD series about this set of qigong exercises.[5]

A folktale called "Meeting Zhou Bong By Chance" states Zhou Bong was walking down the far side of a tall bridge when he noticed a large young man walking up in his direction while looking down at his own feet. Thinking the young man to be a martial arts master wanting to embarrass Zhou by knocking him off the bridge with a shoulder strike, Zhou prepared for a counter-attack and began to swallow air with a subtle “Hm!” and focused all of his energy to his right shoulder. The skin of his shoulder turned red then purple and became hard as rock underneath his clothing. When the two men brushed shoulders, the young man was nearly knocked off of the bridge and the pain caused saliva to pour from his mouth. The attack left him weak in the knees and one side of his body was completely numb. But the incident was a misunderstanding. The young man was none other than his future student, the Water Margin bandit Wu Song who was looking down at his feet to avoid large water puddles born from a freak rain shower.[6]

Biography
Traveling back to Earth, having just walked on the moon, Apollo 14 astronaut Edgar Mitchell had an experience for which nothing in his life had prepared him. This experience radically altered his worldview: Despite science's superb technological achievements, he realized that we had barely begun to probe the deepest mystery of the universe—the fact of consciousness itself. He became convinced that the uncharted territory of the human mind was the next frontier to explore, and that it contained possibilities we had hardly begun to imagine. Within two years of his expedition, Edgar Mitchell founded the Institute of Noetic Sciences in 1973.
Today, Dr. Mitchell serves on the board of directors of the institute. He continues to be active at institute events, including lectures and conferences. He is the author of The Way of the Explorer.

I do not believe in reincarnation. I do, however, believe in something that is not widely taught to mainstream Mormons. It is the possibility of "rounds." Here is just a summary sketch of what I mean. We are born. We live our life. We die. Christ returns to earth and ushers in the 1,000 year millennial time. At the end of that time there is the final war, (Gog, Magog) Then the son,(Jesus Christ) says to the Father, (God) "It is finished." All temple work will be complete for every human being that has ever been born on the planet. This is the time for final judgement and assigninments made to kingdoms. Many will be content to where they are placed. Some will not. There may be an opportunity to do it all again. Not going back to Earth. As "Earth" as we know it now is no longer the same. It has received its glory and now acts as the celestial kingdom. But there are worlds without number. And those worlds are going through the same process that we have gone through on Earth. So maybe I will choose to go to another "earth life" to progress further. If you really think about it. Are you anywhere near becoming a God? if we will live eternally and forever what will we be doing? I personally believe it is not out of the realm of possibility that we have already been through many rounds and will have many more to go. That could explain why everyone born on this earth is at a different level of progression. I know I may sound crazy to some but for others I just may resonate something to think about. It's a lot to take in but I just focus on the life I am living now and doing the best that I can and should do here. Everything else will fall into place as it should.
