I note that many LDS people are hopeful that Mitt Romney will get into a high-visibility position in government. My concern is that in whatever position, he would continue to contribute to the undermining of the US Constitution. Granted, it was decades ago that President McKay 2X told LDSs that we should "look with scorn upon any person who would undermine our Constitution." Sadly, it seems that most peole do not realize that Romney either does not understand the Constitution, does not understand his responsibility as a LDS to uphold and abide by it, or lack the integrity to be guided by it.

I'm sorry, but I have lost the last shred of respect for Mitt. I mean who is the "Fraud" here? The clown lambasted Trump during the election, the least he could do is put his sorry tail between his legs and DISAPPEAR -- FOREVER.

I agree and why i said (true constitutional men) as mitt and trump are not. But I do hope that he does get some true constitutional people there.

I look at this from a completely different perspective. Any politician knows about the constitution, heck most people outside of the United States learn about it in school, so I highly doubt he doesn't understand his responsibility especially after being a missionary and stake president. I doubt many people that have done those 2 haven't read the entire Doctrine and Covenants.
Mormon and Jewish Delegation Gathers at Historic Jerusalem Site
Events commemorate 175th anniversary of visit by Latter-day Saint apostle

A delegation of Latter-day Saint leaders and Jewish dignitaries from the United States gathered at a historic site in Jerusalem to mark the 175th anniversary of an early Mormon apostle’s journey to Jerusalem. On October 24, 1841, Elder Orson Hyde climbed the Mount of Olives under the direction of Joseph Smith, the founder of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, to offer a prayer to dedicate the land as a gathering place for the Jewish people.

If Mitt Romney becomes Secretary of State, as Ambassador to Israel has apparently been taken by Mike Huckabee, Trump has made it clear one of his objectives is to officially recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. Romney, a high priest with the Melchizedek returns to help with the gathering. What better way to celebrate the 175 year since Orson Hyde dedicated the land than for Jerusalem to finally be recognized by the United States. It would be a big snub to the UNESCO which said a couple weeks ago that the Jews have no historical claim to Jerusalem. 2017 would also be 70 years since the UN recognized Israel as a nation. Seems like a lot of significant timings.

Mitt will serve at the pleasure of the president, which may be nowhere at all.

What we saw this weekend was pure politics, nothing more.

Or he sees and knows things we don't, and adjusts his actions accordingly. I'm not really a Romney fan (although he'd have been much better than the Bum-in-Chief we've had the last 8 years) but unlike many on these boards I don't want to see a house dropped on him. Certainly he's not the man President Benson was or Elder Holland is, but I don't believe he's in league with forces fighting against God's Kingdom, either.

Just for argument's sake, let's assume that Mitt Romney knows that prophets have told members of the LDS Church that we must learn the principles of the US Constitution "in the tradition of the Founding Fathers", or as "it was meant to be understood", and that we should uphold and abide by it. Are there any reasons why he should promote and support actions of government that would violate those principles, such as compulsory payment for medical/health insurance, corporate bailouts paid for by "legal plunder" from private individuals, and his progressive and unconstitutional stances on other social issues that would further detract from our liberties. Personally, I consider him a poor example of what a Latter-day Saint president or legislator should be.

I don't think Mitt is a bad choice. He is a good man at heart and has a good head on his shoulders. His analysis of foreign policy during his campaign was pretty accurate. I also think he will be a very good ambassador and negotiator.

The problem with him is that he is a George Bush conservative. He believes that government power should be wielded for good. I like to think of it as the Don Quixote policy for conservatives. The unintended consequences of this do-goodery are usually awful. In this sense conservatives and progressives are no different. They may have different definitions of what is good, but the basic principle of using power is the same.

I would love to see principled people who have the same understanding of the constitution as our founders put into these positions. The problem is that there are very few of these people around. Most have effectively been weeded out of mainstream politics. In addition, Trump himself does not hold those values. He also believes in using the power of government to do good. Why would he surround himself with people who have a different vision than himself?

In summary, I think Mitt is about as good as we are going to get on the constitution side. At least he is principled and has a good understanding of the world we live in. This will be a welcome change to the current regime who wont' let reality intrude into their Howard Zinn vision of the US and its place in the world.

very strong simularities between trump/romney and amulek/alma.

trump being the amulek in this case. a man who has known his calling all his life, but yet shirked that calling for wealth and all that comes with it. romney being the alma.. coming to trump to confirm the things trump has heard all his life.

they now begin the journey of bringing to pass great and terrible things..

discernment tells me that trump and team have been brought together through the hand of Providence. a coming together of great/strong minds to allow for 7 years of prepardness.. as it is, the barbarians are at the gate, and when they finally break through(or rather gain power) there will not be any of this 'we must work across party lines'.. when they gain power, it will be hell to pay for those who side on the right.

Not sure I can buy this analogy. It would be nice if true . . . but I doubt it. Alma would never vilify a man in a world-wide forum (in effect) the way Mitt did to Trump. Also, Mitt does not seem to understand the Book of Mormon concept of what constitutes just war.

Nor does he seem to understand who the true 'barbarians at the gate are . . . or that they have actually already come inside the gates in a stealthy manner. These are the globalists whose hidden hand is the great secret combination of our day as foretold by Moroni. Trump has some understanding of this and has warned us about them. Mitt has given no evidence of having this understanding.

Using MA as an example, Mitt is for government healthcare...not a good start. He also flip-flopped on many moral issues. Political or religious based, I do not trust him. If Trump is still planning to repeal Obamacare, how could Mitt be of any help? Wouldn't he try to persuade Trump to keep this part and that part?

This is one of the disagreements about Romney I disagree with. If he chose to push gov't healthcare from the federal level, I'd certainly say he's not only wrong, but unconstitutionally wrong. However, when he's the governor of a state, a political level who CAN decide what restrictions they're going to put on healthcare as long as it's done in conjunction with the will and approval of the electorate of that state, he's fulfilling the role the people elected him to. If a state wants commie healthcare, they may do so within their state.

Any government program, be it national/federal, state, county or municipal, that takes wealth from people and gives it to others who did not earn it, is wrong in principle. Ezra Taft Benson's 1968 conference address "THE PROPER ROLE OF GOVERNMENT" explains this much better than I can.

"No one has the authority to grant such powers as welfare programs, schemes for redistributing the wealth, and activities that coerce people into acting in accordance with a prescribed code of social planning. There is one simple test. Do I as an individual have a right to use force upon my neighbor to accomplish this goal? If I do, then I may delegate that power to my government to exercise it in my behalf. If I do not have that right, I cannot delegate it."

Some version of health care is something I think the people could vote for at the State level. Ideally, however, you would not want to implement such things with any group that was not a 'covenant' community, as defined by Joel Skousen (I don't think I'm misrepresenting him). In the case of a covenant community, they would all have to agree to the plan.

Yes, but if the people of the state choose it by the means of their legally established government, it becomes the duty of the governor to follow the will of the people, who are ultimately the ones who should make the decisions.
Ezra Taft Benson's 1968 conference address "THE PROPER ROLE OF GOVERNMENT" explains this much better than I can.
Yes, but not even a prophet can deny someone the right to freely make their own choices. He told us what was the correct choices to make and it is then up to each individual to make them, right or wrong. If the people of MA choose to have their state regulate the health industry for the people in their own boundaries, that's their choice. The governor, as the servant of the people, implements and administrates their choices.

If individuals within the state disagree and wish to dispute the law they have the right to appeal, and this is why we have a separation of powers, but the governor can't say "God's prophet told us we shouldn't choose this so I'm not going to go along with your vote." In the OT, the people were ruled by judges, but they kept telling God they wanted a king like all the other kids on the block had. It wasn't the smart choice, it wasn't what God told them was the correct thing to do, but it was ultimately, to their sorrow, their decision. So it is in liberal bastions of this soon-to-be-sunk country.

Ezra Taft Benson is clearly wrong here, in my view at least.

I'll give an example or two.
Should poor people not be allowed to travel on public roads?
Or walk on a public sidewalk?
Or have their children go to public school?
Or borrow a book from a library?
Or have the fire department extinguish their burning house?
Or call upon the police when they are the victim of a crime?
Or have the army defend their country?

No, ETB was clearly wrong.

I think you're reading an interpretation of what he said that is very incorrect or at the least very incomplete. President Benson was, to me, clearly saying totalitarian government and/or pure socialism is wrong. In talking about the welfare system our federal government has, no, they should not have it. There should be no provision for a Dept. of Health and Human Services that provides federal welfare anywhere to anyone other than in the VERY short term case of disasters. When a hurricane blows through and massively destroys most infrastructure, or freak weather destroys levees on the Mississippi river and whole communities are being washed away, having a SHORT TERM response of Military Reserve to help assist state and local officials is prudent, and I believe almost all citizens would agree this is a wise choice. No problem there.

However, there's an enormous section of our population that lives greatly or almost entirely on government handouts. Lest anyone doubt me, remember, I've spent most of my career working in communities where the average income (other than the school employees) is below $20,000, in many cases below $10,000. That's often for a family with 4-12 kids. I've seen a lot of people quit jobs because they worked enough that if they worked any more they'd lose their benefits, and they're not willing to do that.

THAT DAMNED WELL SHOULD NOT HAPPEN!

Please forgive my brief all caps, but you've no idea how pissed off I have been watching perfectly healthy and able people unwilling to work because if they do they will have their handouts cut off. This wasn't one family in a town I once saw. This was large percentages of village after village after village after reservation. I believe this is the kind of thing President Benson was talking about.

I don't have a problem with libraries, and schools, and public works, and emergency services, and I don't think President Benson was targeting those with his writings. However, I do have a HUGE problem with the federal government doing most of those things, because they're things the states should be doing, not the fed. A National military? Certainly. Interstate transportation and commerce? Again, that's clearly something they should do.

But there's no way, not in any realm of possibility that you could convince me the federal government should be involved in public education. Not with 85 educational doctorates, 46 particle physicists, and a whole herd of scantily clad Ricks College Co-eds arguing your point. The federal government can't fix the problems with the schools, the federal government is one of two things ruining the schools. (In case you're wondering, the lousy parents our vomitous society has bred is the other.

I hear what you're saying.
However, we sometimes take aim at the wrong target.
In terms of the economic well-being of the nation, those on benefits are not the main problem. It is a problem, yes, but not the main one.
When the government takes some of our tax and gives it to a poor family, it goes straight back out into the economy. These people don't squirrel it away under the matrass or bury it in the yard; they spend it. Therefore it goes to the local grocery store and other businesses. The funds stay in circulation.
Therefore, these people are not the target we should be aiming at primarily.

The real villains of the piece are the multi-nationals that fleece us and ship the money abroad. Or who employ armies of accountants in order to that avoid paying tax. Or reward their CEO's disproportionately. Or produce useless trinkets instead of real things.

And then there are the banks who gamble with our money and get the tax payer to bail them out when they lose.

These are the targets we should be aiming at.

To get a better perspective on this I recommend Hugh Nibley's book Approaching Zion. It was Bro. Nibley who helped me understand that it is the idle rich the scriptures condemn, not the idle poor.

Romney confirmed he will not Secretary of State in Facebook post today.
It was an honor to have been considered for Secretary of State of our great country. My discussions with President-elect Trump have been both enjoyable and enlightening. I have very high hopes that the new administration will lead the nation to greater strength, prosperity and peace.
